Evidence of a near-threshold resonance in $^{11}$B relevant to the $β$-delayed proton emission of $^{11}$Be

A narrow near-threshold proton-emitting resonance (Ex = 11.4 MeV, J$^π$ = 1/2$^{+}$ and $Γ_{p}$ = 4.4 keV) was directly observed in $^{11}$B via proton resonance scattering. This resonance was previously inferred in the $β$-delayed proton emission of the neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be. The good agreement between both experimental results serves as a ground to confirm the existence of such exotic decay and the particular behavior of weakly bound nuclei coupled to the continuum. $R$-matrix analysis shows a sizable partial decay width for both, proton and $α$ emission channels.

Finite-temperature electron-capture rates for neutron-rich nuclei around N=50 and effects on core-collapse supernovae simulations

The temperature dependence of stellar electron-capture (EC) rates is investigated, with a focus on nuclei around $N=50$, just above $Z=28$, which play an important role during the collapse phase of core-collapse supernovae (CCSN). Two new microscopic calculations of stellar EC rates are obtained from a relativistic and a non-relativistic finite-temperature quasiparticle random-phase approximation approaches, for a conventional grid of temperatures and densities. In both approaches, EC rates due to Gamow-Teller transitions are included. In the relativistic calculation contributions from first-forbidden transitions are also included, and add strongly to the EC rates. The new EC rates are compared with large-scale shell model calculations for the specific case of $^{86}$Kr, providing insight into the finite-temperature effects on the EC rates. At relevant thermodynamic conditions for core-collapse, the discrepancies between the different calculations of this work are within about one order of magnitude. Numerical simulations of CCSN are performed with the spherically-symmetric GR1D simulation code to quantify the impact of such differences on the dynamics of the collapse. These simulations also include EC rates based on two parametrized approximations. A comparison of the neutrino luminosities and enclosed mass at core bounce shows that differences between simulations with different sets of EC rates are relatively small ($\approx 5\%$), suggesting that the EC rates used as inputs for these simulations have become well constrained.

Interaction beween polarons and analogous effects in polarized Fermi gases

We consider an imbalanced mixture of two different ultracold Fermi gases, which are strongly interacting. Calling spin-down the minority component and spin-up the majority component, the limit of small relative density $x=n\ds /n\us$ is usually considered as a gas of non interacting polarons. This allows to calculate, in the expansion of the total energy of the system in powers of $x$, the terms proportional to $x$ (corresponding to the binding energy of the polaron) and to $x^{5/3}$ (corresponding to the kinetic energy of the polaron Fermi sea). We investigate in this paper terms physically due to an interaction between polarons and which are proportional to $x^2$ and $x^{7/3}$. We find three such terms. A first one corresponds to the overlap between the clouds dressing two polarons. The two other ones are due to the modification of the single polaron binding energy caused by the non-zero density of polarons. The second term is due to the restriction of the polaron momentum by the Fermi sea formed by the other polarons. The last one results from the modification of the spin-up Fermi sea brought by the other polarons. The calculation of all these terms is made at the simplest level of a single particle-hole excitation. It is performed for all the possible interaction strengths within the stability range of the polaron. At unitarity the last two terms give a fairly weak contribution while the first one is strong and leads to a marked disagreement with Monte-Carlo results. The possible origins of this discrepancy are discussed.

Comment on "Motion of an impurity particle in an ultracold quasi-one-dimensional gas of hard-core bosons [Phys. Rev. A 79, 033610 (2009)]"

Very recently Girardeau and Minguzzi [arXiv:0807.3366v2, Phys. Rev. A 79, 033610 (2009)] have studied an impurity in a one-dimensional gas of hard-core bosons. In particular they deal with the general case where the mass of the impurity is different from the mass of the bosons and the impurity-boson interaction is not necessarily infinitely repulsive. We show that one of their initial step is erroneous, contradicting both physical intuition and known exact results. Their results in the general case apply only actually when the mass of the impurity is infinite.

Analytical theory of the dressed bound state in highly polarized Fermi gases

We present an analytical treatment of a single \down atom within a Fermi sea of \up atoms, when the interaction is strong enough to produce a bound state, dressed by the Fermi sea. Our method makes use of a diagrammatic analysis, with the involved diagrams taking only into account at most two particle-hole pairs excitations. The agreement with existing Monte-Carlo results is excellent. In the BEC limit our equation reduces exactly to the Skorniakov and Ter-Martirosian equation. We present results when \up and \down atoms have different masses, which is of interest for experiments in progress.
