$Z$ mediated Flavour Changing Neutral Currents with a Fourth Vector-Like Family

We discuss $Z$ mediated flavour changing neutral currents within a model where the hierarchical quark and lepton masses are explained via a fourth vector-like family, together with a scalar sector consisting of two Higgs doublets augmented by a gauge singlet scalar field that spontaneously breaks an extra global $U(1)^{\prime}$ symmetry. The $Z$ mediated flavor violating interactions arise from the mixings between the SM fermions and the vector-like fermions, where the mixing is discussed in an analytic approximation and also exactly numerically. We first discuss charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) $τ\rightarrow μγ, τ\rightarrow 3μ$ and $Z \rightarrow μτ$ decays and find that they cannot significantly constrain the masses of charged vector-like leptons. However, the $790 \text{GeV}$ mass bound arising from collider searches on vector-like lepton doublets can set further constraints on the model parameter space. We also consider rare $t \rightarrow c Z$ decays as well as unitarity violation in the CKM mixing in order to constrain the quark sector of the model under consideration.

Fermion mass hierarchies from vector-like families with an extended 2HDM and a possible explanation for the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments

We study an extended 2 Higgs doublet model (2HDM) in which the Standard Model (SM) Yukawa interactions are forbidden due to a global $U(1)^\prime$ symmetry, but may arise via mixing with vector-like families. In this model, the hierarchical structure of Yukawa couplings of quarks and leptons in the SM arises from the heavy masses of the fourth and fifth vector-like families. Within this model, we consider various non-standard contributions to the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments. We first consider the $W$ exchange at one-loop level, consistent with the $μ\rightarrow e γ$ constraint, and show that it yields a negligible contribution to both electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments. We then consider Higgs scalar exchange, together with vector-like leptons, at one-loop level and show that it is possible to have non-standard contributions to the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments within the $1σ$ constraint of certain experiments. We present some benchmark points for both the muon and the electron anomalies, together with some numerical scans around these points, which indicate the mass regions of the Higgs scalars of the 2HDM in this scenario.

A Review of the Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

Local supersymmetry (SUSY) provides an attractive framework for the incorporation of gravity and unification of gauge interactions within Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). Its breakdown can lead to a variety of models with softly broken SUSY at low energies. In this review article we focus on the SUSY extension of the Standard Model (SM) with an extra U(1)_{N} gauge symmetry originating from a string-inspired E_6 grand unified gauge group. Only in this U(1) extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) inspired by E_6 GUTs the right-handed neutrinos can be superheavy providing a mechanism for the generation of the lepton and baryon asymmetry of the Universe. The particle content of this exceptional supersymmetric standard model (E_6SSM) includes three 27 representations of the E_6 group, to ensure anomaly cancellation, plus a pair of SU(2)_W doublets as required for gauge coupling unification. Thus E_6SSM involves extra exotic matter beyond the MSSM. We consider symmetries that permit to suppress non-diagonal flavour transitions and rapid proton decay, as well as gauge coupling unification, the breakdown of the gauge symmetry and the spectrum of Higgs bosons in this model. The possible Large Hadron Collider (LHC) signatures caused by the presence of exotic states are also discussed.

Is it possible to explain the muon and electron $g-2$ in a $Z^{\prime}$ model?

In order to address this question, we consider a simple renormalisable and gauge invariant model in which the $Z'$ only has couplings to the electron and muon and their associated neutrinos, arising from mixing with a heavy vector-like fourth family of leptons. Within this model we discuss the contributions to the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments from $Z'$ exchange, subject to the constraints from $μ\rightarrow e γ$ and neutrino trident production. Using analytic and numerical arguments, we find that such a $Z'$ model can account for either the electron or the muon $g-2$ anomalies, but not both, while remaining consistent with the experimental constraints from $μ\rightarrow e γ$ and neutrino trident production.

Littlest Inverse Seesaw Model

We propose a minimal predictive inverse seesaw model based on two right-handed neutrinos and two additional singlets, leading to the same low energy neutrino mass matrix as in the Littlest Seesaw (LS) (type I) model. In order to implement such a Littlest Inverse Seesaw (LIS) model, we have used an $S_{4}$ family symmetry, together with other various symmetries, flavons and driving fields. The resulting LIS model leads to an excellent fit to the low energy neutrino parameters, including the prediction of a normal neutrino mass ordering, exactly as in the usual LS model. However, unlike the LS model, the LIS model allows charged lepton flavour violating (CLFV) processes and lepton conversion in nuclei within reach of the forthcoming experiments.

750 GeV Diphoton Resonance from Singlets in an Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

The 750-760 GeV diphoton resonance may be identified as one or two scalars and/or one or two pseudoscalars contained in the two singlet superfields S_{1,2} arising from the three 27-dimensional representations of E_6 . The three 27s also contain three copies of colour-triplet charge \mp 1/3 vector-like fermions D,\bar{D} and two copies of charged inert Higgsinos \tilde{H}^{+},\tilde{H}^{-} to which the singlets S_{1,2} may couple. We propose a variant of the E_6SSM where the third singlet S_3 breaks a gauged U(1)_N above the TeV scale, predicting Z'_N, D,\bar{D}, \tilde{H}^{+},\tilde{H}^{-} at LHC Run 2, leaving the two lighter singlets S_{1,2} with masses around 750 GeV. We calculate the branching ratios and cross-sections for the two scalar and two pseudoscalar states associated with the S_{1,2} singlets, including possible degeneracies and maximal mixing, subject to the constraint that their couplings remain perturbative up to the unification scale.

CP violating scalar Dark Matter

We study an extension of the Standard Model (SM) in which two copies of the SM scalar $SU(2)$ doublet which do not acquire a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), and hence are \textit{inert}, are added to the scalar sector. We allow for CP-violation in the \textit{inert} sector, where the lightest \textit{inert} state is protected from decaying to SM particles through the conservation of a $Z_2$ symmetry. The lightest neutral particle from the \textit{inert} sector, which has a mixed CP-charge due to CP-violation, is hence a Dark Matter (DM) candidate. We discuss the new regions of DM relic density opened up by CP-violation, and compare our results to the CP-conserving limit and the Inert Doublet Model (IDM). We constrain the parameter space of the CP-violating model using recent results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and DM direct and indirect detection experiments.

Exploring the CP-violating NMSSM: EDM Constraints and Phenomenology

The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) features extra new sources for CP violation. In contrast to the MSSM CP violation can already occur at tree level in the Higgs sector. We investigate the range of possible allowed CP-violating phases by taking into account the constraints arising from the measurements of the Electric Dipole Moments (EDMs) and the latest LHC Higgs data. Our analysis shows that large CP-violating phases, that are NMSSM-specific, are not in conflict with the EDMs. They are dominantly constrained by the Higgs data in this case. We use our results to investigate the prospects of measuring CP violation through the combined measurement of Higgs rates, on the one hand, and in observables based on CP-violating Higgs couplings to tau leptons on the other hand.

Discovery Prospects for NMSSM Higgs Bosons at the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the discovery prospects for NMSSM Higgs bosons during the 13~TeV run of the LHC. While one of the neutral Higgs bosons is demanded to have a mass around 125~GeV and Standard Model (SM)-like properties, there can be substantially lighter, nearby or heavier Higgs bosons, that have not been excluded yet by LEP, Tevatron or the 8~TeV run of the LHC. The challenge consists in discovering the whole NMSSM Higgs mass spectrum. We present the rates for production and subsequent decay of the neutral NMSSM Higgs bosons in the most promising final states and discuss their possible discovery. The prospects for pinning down the Higgs sector of the Natural NMSSM will be analysed taking into account alternative search channels. We give a series of benchmark scenarios compatible with the experimental constraints, that feature Higgs-to-Higgs decays and entail (exotic) signatures with multi-fermion and/or multi-photon final states. These decay chains furthermore give access to the trilinear Higgs self-couplings. We briefly discuss the possibility of exploiting coupling sum rules in case not all the NMSSM Higgs bosons are discovered.

Minimal see-saw model predicting best fit lepton mixing angles

We discuss a minimal predictive see-saw model in which the right-handed neutrino mainly responsible for the atmospheric neutrino mass has couplings to (nu_e, nu_mu, nu_tau) proportional to (0,1,1) and the right-handed neutrino mainly responsible for the solar neutrino mass has couplings to (nu_e, nu_mu, nu_tau) proportional to (1,4,2), with a relative phase eta = -2pi/5. We show how these patterns of couplings could arise from an A_4 family symmetry model of leptons, together with Z_3 and Z_5 symmetries which fix eta = -2pi/5 up to a discrete phase choice. The PMNS matrix is then completely determined by one remaining parameter which is used to fix the neutrino mass ratio m_2/m_3. The model predicts the lepton mixing angles theta12=34 degrees, theta23=41 degrees, theta13=9.5 degrees, which exactly coincide with the current best fit values for a normal neutrino mass hierarchy, together with the distinctive prediction for the CP violating oscillation phase delta =106 degrees.

Quark-Lepton Mass Relation in a Realistic A4 Extension of the Standard Model

We propose a realistic A4 extension of the Standard Model involving a particular quark-lepton mass relation, namely that the ratio of the third family mass to the geometric mean of the first and second family masses are equal for down-type quarks and charged leptons. This relation, which is approximately renormalization group invariant, is usually regarded as arising from the Georgi-Jarlskog relations, but in the present model there is no unification group or supersymmetry. In the neutrino sector we propose a simple modification of the so called Zee-Wolfenstein mass matrix pattern which allows an acceptable reactor angle along with a deviation of the atmospheric and solar angles from their bi-maximal values. Quark masses, mixing angles and CP violation are well described by a numerical fit.

Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model with a Higgs Near 125 GeV

We study the parameter space of the constrained exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM) consistent with a Higgs signal near 125 GeV and the LHC searches for squarks, gluinos and Z'. The cE6SSM parameter space consistent with correct electroweak symmetry breaking, is represented by scans in the (m0, M1/2) plane for fixed Z' mass and tan beta, with squark, gluino and Higgs masses plotted as contours in this plane. We find that a 125 GeV Higgs mass only arises for a sufficiently large Z' mass, mostly above current limits, and for particular regions of squark and gluino masses corresponding to multi-TeV squark masses, but with lighter gluinos typically within reach of the LHC 8 TeV or forthcoming 14 TeV runs. Successful dark matter relic abundance may be achieved over all the parameter space, assuming a bino-like LSP with a nearby heavier inert Higgsino doublet and decoupled inert singlinos, resulting in conventional gluino decay signatures. A set of typical benchmark points with a Higgs near 125 GeV is provided which exemplifies these features.

Leptogenesis in the two right-handed neutrino model revisited

We revisit leptogenesis in the minimal non-supersymmetric type I see-saw mechanism with two right-handed (RH) neutrinos, including flavour effects and allowing both RH neutrinos N_1 and N_2 to contribute, rather than just the lightest RH neutrino N_1 that has hitherto been considered. By performing scans over parameter space in terms of the single complex angle z of the orthogonal matrix R, for a range of PMNS parameters, we find that in regions around z \sim \pm π/2, for the case of a normal mass hierarchy, the N_2 contribution can dominate the contribution to leptogenesis, allowing the lightest RH neutrino mass to be decreased by about an order of magnitude in these regions, down to M_1 \sim 1.3*10^11 GeV for vanishing initial N_2-abundance, with the numerical results supported by analytic estimates. We show that the regions around z \sim \pm π/2 correspond to light sequential dominance, so the new results in this paper may be relevant to unified model building.

NMSSM Higgs Benchmarks Near 125 GeV

The recent LHC indications of a SM-like Higgs boson near 125 GeV are consistent not only with the Standard Model (SM) but also with Supersymmetry (SUSY). However naturalness arguments disfavour the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We consider the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with a SM-like Higgs boson near 125 GeV involving relatively light stops and gluinos below 1 TeV in order to satisfy naturalness requirements. We are careful to ensure that the chosen values of couplings do not become non perturbative below the grand unification (GUT) scale, although we also examine how these limits may be extended by the addition of extra matter to the NMSSM at the two-loop level. We then propose four sets of benchmark points corresponding to the SM-like Higgs boson being the lightest or the second lightest Higgs state in the NMSSM or the NMSSM-with-extra-matter. With the aid of these benchmark points we discuss how the NMSSM Higgs boson near 125 GeV may be distinguished from the SM Higgs boson in future LHC searches.

Tri-bimaximal-Cabibbo Mixing

Recent measurements of the lepton mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by the Daya Bay and RENO reactor experiments are consistent with the relationship $θ_{13}\approx θ_C/\sqrt{2}$ where $ θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle. We propose Tri-bimaximal-Cabibbo (TBC) mixing, in which $\sin θ_{13}= \sin θ_C/\sqrt{2}$, $\sin θ_{23}= 1/\sqrt{2}$ and $\sin θ_{12}= 1/\sqrt{3}$. We show that TBC mixing may arise approximately from Tri-bimaximal, Bi-maximal or Golden Ratio neutrino mixing, together with Cabibbo-like charged lepton corrections arising from a Pati-Salam gauge group, leading to predictions for the CP-violating phase of $δ\approx \pm 90^o, \pm 180^o, \pm 75^o$, respectively. Alternatively, we show that TBC neutrino mixing may realised accurately using the type I see-saw mechanism with partially constrained sequential right-handed neutrino dominance, assuming a family symmetry which is broken by a flavon common to quarks and neutrinos.

Collider phenomenology of the E6SSM

We consider collider signatures of the exceptional supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (E6SSM). This E6 inspired SUSY model is based on the SM gauge group together with an extra U(1) gauge symmetry under which right--handed neutrinos have zero charge. To ensure anomaly cancellation and gauge coupling unification the low energy matter content of the E6SSM involve extra exotic matter beyond the MSSM. We discuss the collider signatures associated with the production of new particles predicted by the E6SSM and consider the implications of this model for dark matter and Higgs phenomenology. Since exotic quarks in the E6SSM can be either diquarks or leptoquarks they may provide spectacular new physics signals at the LHC.

LHC Signatures of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

We discuss two striking Large Hadron Collider (LHC) signatures of the constrained version of the exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM), based on a universal high energy soft scalar mass m_0, soft trilinear coupling A_0 and soft gaugino mass M_{1/2}. The first signature we discuss is that of light exotic colour triplet charge 1/3 fermions, which we refer to as D-fermions. We calculate the LHC production cross section of D-fermions, and discuss their decay patterns. Secondly we discuss the E6 type U(1)_N spin-1 Z' gauge boson and show how it may decay into exotic states, increasing its width and modifying the line shape of the dilepton final state. We illustrate these features using two representative cE6SSM benchmark points, including an "early LHC discovery" point, giving the Feynman rules and numerical values for the relevant couplings in order to facilitate further studies.

Nonstandard Higgs Decays and Dark Matter in the E6SSM

We study the decays of the lightest Higgs boson within the exceptional supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (E6SSM). The E6SSM predicts three families of Higgs-like doublets plus three SM singlets that carry U(1)_{N} charges. One family of Higgs-like doublets and one SM singlet develop vacuum expectation values. The fermionic partners of other Higgs-like fields and SM singlets form inert neutralino and chargino states. Two lightest inert neutralinos tend to be the lightest and next-to-lightest SUSY particles (LSP and NLSP). The considered model can account for the dark matter relic abundance if the lightest inert neutralino has mass close to half the Z mass. In this case the usual SM-like Higgs boson decays more than 95% of the time into either LSPs or NLSPs. As a result the decays of the lightest Higgs boson into l^{+} l^{-} + X might play an essential role in the Higgs searches. This scenario also predicts other light inert chargino and neutralino states below 200 GeV and large LSP direct detection cross-sections which is on the edge of observability of XENON100.

Novel Higgs Decays and Dark Matter in the E(6)SSM

The Exceptional Supersymmetric (SUSY) Standard Model predicts three families of Higgs doublets plus three Higgs singlets, where one family develops vacuum expectation values (VEVs), while the remaining two which do not are called Inert. The model can account for the dark matter relic abundance if the two lightest Inert neutralinos, identified as the (next-to) lightest SUSY particles ((N)LSPs), have masses close to half the Z mass. In this case we find that the usual SM-like Higgs boson decays more than 95% of the time into either LSPs or NLSPs. The latter case produces a final state containing two leptons l^{+}l^{-} with an invariant mass less than or about 10 GeV. We illustrate this scenario with a set of benchmark points satisfying phenomenological constraints and the WMAP dark matter relic abundance. This scenario also predicts other light Inert chargino and neutralino states below 200 GeV, and large LSP direct detection cross-sections close to current limits and observable soon at XENON100.

Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and $θ_{13}$

We propose an extension of tri-bimaximal mixing to include a non-zero reactor angle $θ_{13}$ while maintaining the tri-bimaximal predictions for the atmospheric angle $θ_{23}=45^o$ and solar angle $θ_{12}=35^o$. We show how such tri-bimaximal-reactor mixing can arise at leading order from the(type I) see-saw mechanism with partially constrained sequential dominance. Partially constrained sequential dominance can be realized in GUT models with a non-Abelian discrete family symmetry, such as $A_4$, spontaneously broken by flavons with a particular vacuum alignment.

$A_4$ Family Symmetry from SU(5) SUSY GUTs in 6d

We propose a model in which $A_4$ Family Symmetry arises dynamically from a six dimensional orbifold SU(5) Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theory. The SU(5) is broken to the Standard Model gauge group by a particular orbifold compactification leading to $A_4$ Family Symmetry, low energy Supersymmetry and Higgs doublet-triplet splitting. The resulting four dimensional effective superpotential leads to a realistic description of quark and lepton masses and mixing angles including tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing and an inter-family mass hierarchy provided by a Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism. This model is the first which combines the idea of orbifold GUTs with $A_4$ family symmetry resulting from the orbifolding.

A_4xSU(5) SUSY GUT of Flavour in 8d

We propose an SU(5) SUSY GUT of flavour with A_4 family symmetry in 8d where the vacuum alignment is achieved in an elegant way by the use of boundary conditions on orbifolds. The model involves SU(5) living in the 8d bulk, with matter living in 6d (or 4d) subspaces and Yukawa interactions occurring at a 4d point. The GUT group is broken to the Standard Model by the orbifold compactification, setting the GUT scale and leading to low energy supersymmetry and Higgs doublet-triplet splitting. The first two families of 10-plets are doubled resulting in a lack of both desirable and unwanted GUT relations. The resulting four dimensional effective superpotential leads to a realistic description of quark and lepton masses and mixing angles including tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing and an inter-family mass hierarchy provided in part by volume suppression and in part by a Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism.

Family symmetries in F-theory GUTs

We discuss F-theory SU(5) GUTs in which some or all of the quark and lepton families are assigned to different curves and family symmetry enforces a leading order rank one structure of the Yukawa matrices. We consider two possibilities for the suppression of baryon and lepton number violation. The first is based on Flipped SU(5) with gauge group SU(5)\times U(1)_χ\times SU(4)_{\perp} in which U(1)_χ plays the role of a generalised matter parity. We present an example which, after imposing a Z_2 monodromy, has a U(1)_{\perp}^2 family symmetry. Even in the absence of flux, spontaneous breaking of the family symmetry leads to viable quark, charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixing. The second possibility has an R-parity associated with the symmetry of the underlying compactification manifold and the flux. We construct an example of a model with viable masses and mixing angles based on the gauge group SU(5)\times SU(5)_{\perp} with a U(1)_{\perp}^3 family symmetry after imposing a Z_2 monodromy.

Implications of large CP Violation in B mixing for Supersymmetric Standard Models

Following the anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry measured by the D0 collaboration at the Tevatron collider we discuss the implications of large CP violation in $B_{d,s}$ mixing for Supersymmetric (SUSY) Standard Models, focussing on those models which allow a family symmetry and unification. For the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) we show that it is only possible to account for $B_{s}$ mixing and CP violation at the expense of large squark mixing which would require a new approach to family symmetry models. In order to describe both $B_{s}$ and $B_{d}$ mixing and CP violation we are led to consider SUSY models with Higgs fields transforming as triplets under a family symmetry. We describe a realistic such model based on $Δ_{27}$ family symmetry in which tree-level exchange of the second Higgs family predicts $B_{s}$ and $B_{d}$ mixing and CP violation in good agreement with a recent global fit, while naturally suppressing flavour and CP violation involving the first and second quark and lepton families.

Neutrino Mixing Angles in Sequential Dominance to NLO and NNLO

Neutrinos with hierarchical masses and two large mixing angles may naturally originate from sequential dominance (SD). Within this framework we present analytic expressions for the neutrino mixing angles including the next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections arising from the second lightest and lightest neutrino masses. The analytic results for neutrino mixing angles in SD presented here, including the NLO and NNLO corrections, are applicable to a wide class of models and may provide useful insights when confronting the models with data from high precision neutrino experiments. We also point out that for special cases of SD corresponding to form dominance (FD) the NLO and NNLO corrections both vanish. For example we study tri-bimaximal (TB) mixing via constrained sequential dominance (CSD) which involves only a NNLO correction and tri-bimaximal-reactor (TBR) mixing via partially constrained sequential dominance (PCSD) which involves a NLO correction suppressed by the small reactor angle and show that the analytic results have good agreement with the numerical results for these cases.

Nonstandard Higgs decays in the E(6)SSM

We study the nonstandard decays of the lightest Higgs state within the Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (E6SSM). We argued that the SM--like Higgs boson can decay predominantly into dark matter particles while its branching ratios into SM particles varies from 2% to 4%. This scenario also implies the presence of other relatively light Inert chargino and neutralino states in the particle spectrum with masses below 200 GeV. We argue that in this case the decays of the lightest Higgs boson into l^{+} l^{-} + X may play an essential role in the Higgs searches.

On the Vanishing of the CP Asymmetry in Leptogenesis due to Form Dominance

We emphasize that the vanishing of the CP asymmetry in leptogenesis, previously observed for models with tri-bimaximal mixing and family symmetry, may be traced to a property of the type I see-saw mechanism satisfied by such models known as Form Dominance, corresponding to the case of a diagonal Casas-Ibarra R-matrix. Form Dominance leads to vanishing flavour-dependent CP asymmetries irrespective of whether one has tri-bimaximal mixing or a family symmetry. Successful leptogenesis requires violation of Form Dominance, but not necessarily violation of tri bimaximal mixing. This may be achieved in models where the family symmetry responsible for tri-bimaximal mixing is implemented indirectly and a strong neutrino mass hierarchy is present with the Form Dominance broken only softly by the right-handed neutrino responsible for the lightest neutrino mass, as in constrained sequential dominance.

Solving the Flavour Problem in Supersymmetric Standard Models with Three Higgs Families

We show how a non-Abelian family symmetry Delta(27) can be used to solve the flavour problem of supersymmetric standard models containing three Higgs families such as the Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (E(6)SSM). The three 27 dimensional families of the E(6)SSM, including the three families of Higgs fields, transform in a triplet representation of the Delta(27) family symmetry, allowing the family symmetry to commute with a possible high energy E(6) symmetry. The Delta(27) family symmetry here provides a high energy understanding of the Z(2)H symmetry of the E(6)SSM, which solves the flavour changing neutral current problem of the three families of Higgs fields. The main phenomenological predictions of the model are tri-bi-maximal mixing for leptons, two almost degenerate LSPs and two almost degenerate families of colour triplet D-fermions, providing a clear prediction for the LHC. In addition the model predicts PGBs with masses below the TeV scale, and possibly much lighter, which appears to be a quite general and robust prediction of all models based on the D-term vacuum alignment mechanism.

Phenomenological Consequences of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

The Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (E$_6$SSM) provides a low energy alternative to the MSSM, with an extra gauged U(1)$_N$ symmetry, solving the $μ$-problem of the MSSM. Inspired by the possible embedding into an E$_6$ GUT, the matter content fills three generations of E$_6$ multiplets, thus predicting exciting exotic matter such as diquarks or leptoquarks. We present predictions from a constrained version of the model (cE$_6$SSM), with a universal scalar mass $m_0$, trilinear mass $A$ and gaugino mass $M_{1/2}$. We reveal a large volume of the cE$_6$SSM parameter space where the correct breakdown of the gauge symmetry is achieved and all experimental constraints satisfied. We predict a hierarchical particle spectrum with heavy scalars and light gauginos, while the new exotic matter can be light or heavy depending on parameters. We present representative cE$_6$SSM scenarios, demonstrating that there could be light exotic particles, like leptoquarks and a U(1)$_N$ Z' boson, with spectacular signals at the LHC.

Predictions of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

We discuss the predictions of a constrained version of the exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM), based on a universal high energy soft scalar mass m_0, soft trilinear coupling A_0 and soft gaugino mass M_1/2. We predict a supersymmetry (SUSY) spectrum containing a light gluino, a light wino-like neutralino and chargino pair and a light bino-like neutralino, with other sparticle masses except the lighter stop being much heavier. In addition, the cE6SSM allows the possibility of light exotic colour triplet charge 1/3 fermions and scalars, leading to early exotic physics signals at the LHC. We focus on the possibility of a Z' gauge boson with mass close to 1 TeV, and low values of (m0,M_1/2), which would correspond to an LHC discovery using "first data", and propose a set of benchmark points to illustrate this.

The spectrum includes a light gluino, a light wino-like neutralino and chargino pair and a light bino-like neutralino, with other sparticle masses except the lighter stop being much heavier. We also discuss scenarios with an extra light exotic colour triplet of fermions and scalars and a TeV scale Z', which lead to early exotic physics signals at the LHC.

Benchmark scenarios for the NMSSM

We discuss constrained and semi--constrained versions of the next--to--minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) in which a singlet Higgs superfield is added to the two doublet superfields that are present in the minimal extension (MSSM). This leads to a richer Higgs and neutralino spectrum and allows for many interesting phenomena that are not present in the MSSM. In particular, light Higgs particles are still allowed by current constraints and could appear as decay products of the heavier Higgs states, rendering their search rather difficult at the LHC. We propose benchmark scenarios which address the new phenomenological features, consistent with present constraints from colliders and with the dark matter relic density, and with (semi--)universal soft terms at the GUT scale. We present the corresponding spectra for the Higgs particles, their couplings to gauge bosons and fermions and their most important decay branching ratios. A brief survey of the search strategies for these states at the LHC is given.

Neutralino Dark Matter in the USSM

This paper provides a comprehensive discussion of neutralino dark matter within classes of extended supersymmetric models referred to as the USSM containing one additional SM singlet Higgs plus an extra $Z'$, together with their superpartners the singlino and bino'. These extra states of the USSM can significantly modify the nature and properties of neutralino dark matter relative to that of the minimal (or even next-to-minimal) supersymmetric standard models. We derive the Feynman rules for the USSM and calculate the dark matter relic abundance and direct detection rates for elastic scattering in the USSM for interesting regions of parameter space where the largest differences are expected.

Neutrino Mixing Sum Rules and Oscillation Experiments

The neutrino mixing sum rule $θ_{12} - θ_{13}\cos(δ) \approx θ^ν_{12}$ provides a possibility to explore the structure of the neutrino mass matrix in the presence of charged lepton corrections, since it relates the 1-2 mixing angle from the neutrino mass matrix, $θ_{12}^ν$, to observable parameters of the PMNS mixing matrix. The neutrino mixing sum rule holds if the charged lepton mixing angles are CKM-like, i.e., small and dominated by a 1-2 mixing, and for small 1-3 mixing in the neutrino mass matrix. These conditions hold in a wide class of well motivated flavour models. We apply this sum rule to present oscillation data, and we investigate the prospects of future neutrino facilities for exploring the sum rule by simulating various setups for long-baseline reactor and accelerator experiments. As explicit examples, we use the sum rule to test the hypotheses of tri-bimaximal and bimaximal neutrino mixing, where $θ^ν_{12}$ is predicted by $\sin^2(θ^ν_{12}) = 1/3$ or 1/2, respectively, although the neutrino mixing sum rule can be used to test any prediction for $θ^ν_{12}$.

Natural Dark Matter from Type I String Theory

We study neutralino dark matter within a semi-realistic type I string model, where supersymmetry breaking arises from F-terms of moduli fields parameterised in terms of Goldstino angles, which automatically gives rise to non-universal soft third sfamily and gaugino masses. We study the fine-tuning sensitivities for dark matter and electroweak symmetry breaking across the parameter space of the type I string model, and compare the results to a similar analysis in the non-universal MSSM. Within the type I string model we find that neutralino dark matter can be naturally implemented in the $\stau$ bulk region, the $Z^0$ resonance region and the maximally tempered Bino/Wino/Higgsino region, in agreement with the results of the non-universal MSSM analysis. We also find that in the type I string model the ``well-tempered'' Bino/Wino region is less fine-tuned than in the MSSM, whereas the $\stau$ co-annihilation region exhibits a significantly higher degree of fine-tuning than in the MSSM.

Tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing from discrete subgroups of SU(3) and SO(3) family symmetry

It has recently been shown how tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing can be achieved, using the see-saw mechanism with constrained sequential dominance, through the vacuum alignment of a broken non-Abelian gauged family symmetry such as SO(3) or SU(3). Generalising the approach of Altarelli and Feruglio developed for an $A_4$ model we show how the reduction of the underlying symmetry to a discrete subgroup of SO(3) or SU(3) renders this alignment a generic property of such models. This means near tri-bimaximal mixing can be quite naturally accommodated in a complete unified theory of quark and lepton masses.

Electrophobic Lorentz invariance violation for neutrinos and the see-saw mechanism

In this talk we show how Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) can occur for Majorana neutrinos, without inducing LIV in the charged leptons via radiative corrections. Such ``electrophobic'' LIV is due to the Majorana nature of the LIV operator together with electric charge conservation. Being free from the strong constraints coming from the charged lepton sector, electrophobic LIV can in principle be as large as current neutrino experiments permit. On the other hand electrophobic LIV could be naturally small if it originates from LIV in some singlet ``right-handed neutrino'' sector, and is felt in the physical left-handed neutrinos via a see-saw mechanism.

Sequential Dominance

We review the mechanism of sequential right-handed neutrino dominance proposed in the framework of the type I see-saw mechanism to account for bi-large neutrino mixing and a neutrino mass hierarchy in a natural way. We discuss how sequential dominance may also be applied to the right-handed charged leptons, which alternatively allows bi-large lepton mixing from the charged lepton sector. We review how such sequential dominance models may be upgraded to include type II see-saw contributions, resulting in a partially degenerate neutrino mass spectrum with bi-large lepton mixing arising from sequential dominance. We also summarise the model building applications and the phenomenological implications of sequential dominance.

Fermion Masses and Mixing Angles from SU(3) Family Symmetry and Unification

We develop a bottom-up approach to constructing a theory of fermion masses and mixing angles based on the gauge group $SU(3)\times G$ where SU(3) is a family symmetry and $G$ contains a unified group such as SO(10) or its Pati-Salam subgroup, together with other discrete symmetries. We construct a realistic model and show that it can provide an excellent description of quark and lepton masses and mixing angles, including almost maximal atmospheric mixing and the LMA MSW solar neutrino solution. We predict a neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ near the current limit. The model provides the basis for a new solution to the flavour problem with a characteristic soft SUSY breaking mass spectrum.

Implications of $B_s\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ in SO(10)-like Models

We examine the potentially very promising signal $B_s\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ in supersymmetry with large $\tanβ$ in a {\em top-down} approach starting from the best fits of an SO(10)-like model studied recently. Our results go beyond minimal flavour violation investigated in previous works. We show that the absolute best fits provide a signal for $B_s\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ at the borderline of the present limits and hence the ongoing search at the Tevatron will start having an impact on the global analysis of this class of SUSY models. We discuss the implications of a measurement of $B_s\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ for restricting the parameter space of gauginos and sfermion masses, and of signals in other channels $B_{d,s}\to l^{+}+l^{-}$. We also discuss correlations of $B_s\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ with the CP-odd Higgs mass, $\sin (β-α)$ and $b\to s γ$ in SO(10)-like models.

Lepton Flavour Violation in the Constrained MSSM with Natural Neutrino Mass Hierarchy

We present predictions for $μ\to e γ$ and $τ\to μγ$ in the CMSSM in which there is a natural hierarchy of neutrino masses resulting from the sequential dominance of three right-handed neutrinos. We perform a global analysis of this model in the $(m_0,M_{1/2})$ plane, assuming radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, and including all observed laboratory data. We confirm that a large (small) $τ\to μγ$ rate results from the dominant right-handed neutrino being the heaviest (lightest) one. We show that the $μ\to e γ$ rate may determine the order of the sub-dominant neutrino Yukawa couplings in the flavour basis, but may also be sensitive to effects beyond the leading log and leading mass insertion approximations. We also show that the $μ\to e γ$ rate is independent of $θ_{13}$, but measurement of this angle may determine a ratio of sub-dominant Yukawa couplings.

The Soft Supersymmetry-Breaking Lagrangian: Theory and Applications

After an introduction recalling the theoretical motivation for low energy (100 GeV to TeV scale) supersymmetry, this review describes the theory and experimental implications of the soft supersymmetry-breaking Lagrangian of the general minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). Extensions to include neutrino masses and nonminimal theories are also discussed. Topics covered include models of supersymmetry breaking, phenomenological constraints from electroweak symmetry breaking, flavor/CP violation, collider searches, and cosmological constraints including dark matter and implications for baryogenesis and inflation.

Neutrino Mass Models

I review promising approaches to neutrino mass models, focussing on three neutrino patterns of neutrino masses and mixing angles, and the corresponding Majorana mass matrices. I discuss the see-saw mechanism, and show how it may be applied in a very natural way to give a neutrino mass hierarchy with large atmospheric and solar angles by assuming single right-handed neutrino dominance. A theoretical framework for understanding quark and lepton (including neutrino) masses and mixing angles based on SUSY, GUTs and Family symmetry is then described, and sample models which involve single right-handed neutrino dominance are discussed.

Supersymmetric Higgs Bosons in a 5D Orbifold Model

We analyze the phenomenology of the Higgs sector in a 5D model compactified on an $S_1/Z_2$ orbifold where the compactification scale $M_C$ is around the TeV scale. We show that the conventional MSSM Higgs boson mass bounds in 4D can be violated when we allow the gauge sector, Higgs and third family multiplets to live in the fifth extra dimension. Supersymmetry is broken at an orbifold fixed point which is spatially separated from the Yukawa brane where two chiral families are localized. When the brane-localized supersymmetry breaking term for the stop sector is arbitrarily large, we find that the stop KK-mode mass spectrum is completely independent of the Higgs fields. Hence, the Higgs masses only receive radiative contributions from the top KK-modes. The 1-loop effective potential is insensitive to the cutoff scale of the theory and yields a negative Higgs squared-mass contribution that triggers electroweak symmetry breaking in the range $1.5\simlt\tanβ\simlt 20$, where bottom/sbottom loop effects can be ignored. The recent LEP Higgs bound at $m_{h^{0}} > 114.1$ GeV, in conjunction with naturalness arguments, allows us to bracket the compactification scale $1.5 \simlt M_{C} \simlt 4$ TeV. Within this parameter space, we find that the lightest Higgs boson mass has an upper bound $m_{h^{0}} \simlt 160$ GeV with the magnitude of the $μ$-parameter restricted to the range $33 \simlt | μ| \simlt 347$ GeV.

Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and $τ\to μγ$ in a Realistic String-Inspired Model of Neutrino Masses

We discuss the lepton sector of a realistic string-inspired model based on the Pati-Salam $SU(4)\times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ gauge group supplemented by a U(1) family symmetry. The model involves third family Yukawa unification, predicts large $\tan β\sim 50$, and describes all fermion masses and mixing angles, including approximate bi-maximal mixing in the neutrino sector. Atmospheric neutrino mixing is achieved via a large 23 entry in the neutrino Yukawa matrix which can have important phenomenological effects. We find that the recent BNL result on the muon ($g-2$) can be easily accommodated in a large portion of the SUSY parameter space of this model. Over this region of parameter space the model predicts a CP-even Higgs mass near 115 GeV, and a rate for $τ\to μγ$ which is close to its current experimental limit.

Neutrino Masses and Mixing Angles in a Realistic String-Inspired Model

We analyse a supersymmetric string-inspired model of all fermion masses and mixing angles based on the Pati-Salam $SU(4)\times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ gauge group supplemented by a $U(1)_X$ flavour symmetry. The model involves third family Yukawa unification and predicts the top mass and the ratio of the vacuum expectation values $\tan β$. The model also provides a successful description of the CKM matrix and predicts the masses of the down and strange quarks. However our main focus is on the neutrino masses and MNS mixing angles, and we show how the recent atmospheric neutrino mixing observed by Super-Kamiokande, and the MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem lead to important information about the flavour structure of the model near the string scale. We show how single right-handed neutrino dominance may be implemented by the use of ``Clebsch zeros'', leading to the LMA MSW solution, corresponding to bi-maximal mixing. The LOW MSW and SMA MSW solutions are also discussed.

Atmospheric and Solar Neutrinos from Single Right-Handed Neutrino Dominance and U(1) Family Symmetry

We argue that in order to provide a natural explanation of both neutrino mass hierarchies and large neutrino mixing angles, as required by the atmospheric neutrino data, a single right-handed neutrino must give the dominant contribution to the 23 block of the light effective neutrino matrix, and illustrate this mechanism in the framework of models with U(1) family symmetries. Sub-dominant contributions from other right-handed neutrinos are required to give small mass splittings appropriate to the small angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem. We give general conditions for achieving this in the framework of U(1) family symmetry models containing arbitrary numbers of right-handed neutrinos, and show how the resulting neutrino mass hierarchies and mixing angles may be expanded in terms of the Wolfenstein parameter.

Naturalness Implications of LEP Results

We analyse the fine-tuning constraints arising from absence of superpartners at LEP, without strong universality assumptions. We show that such constraints do not imply that charginos or neutralinos should have been seen at LEP, contrary to the usual arguments. They do however imply relatively light gluinos $(m_{\tilde g} \lsim 350 GeV)$ and/or a relation between the soft-breaking SU(3) gaugino mass and Higgs soft mass $m_{H_U}$. The LEP limit on the Higgs mass is significant, especially at low $\tan β$, and we investigate to what extent this provides evidence for both a lighter gluino and correlations between soft masses.

A Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model of Hybrid Inflation

In this talk we discuss a model of inflation based on a simple variant of the NMSSM, called $ϕ$NMSSM \cite{phiNMSSM}, where the additional singlet $ϕ$ plays the role of the inflaton in hybrid (or inverted hybrid) type models. As in the original NMSSM, the $ϕ$NMSSM solves the $μ$ problem of the MSSM via the VEV of a gauge singlet $N$, but unlike the NMSSM does not suffer from domain wall problems since the offending $Z_3$ symmetry is replaced by an approximate Peccei-Quinn symmetry which also solves the strong CP problem, and leads to an invisible axion with interesting cosmological consequences. The model predicts a spectral index $n=1$ to one part in $10^{12}$.

Lepton Flavour Violation in String-Inspired Models

Lepton flavour violation has been proposed as a significant test of supersymmetric unification. Here we show that such signals are also a generic feature of supersymmetric string unified models in which there is no simple unified gauge group. In realistic models of this kind which involve third family Yukawa unification and large values of $\tan β$, there are generally heavy right-handed (singlet) neutrinos of intermediate mass $M_ν$, whose couplings violate lepton flavour. To illustrate these effects we calculate the rates for $μ\to e γ$ and $τ\to μgamma$ in the minimal supersymmetric $SU(4)\times SU(2)\times SU(2)$ model. Including only the minimum irreducible contributions, we find that both rates are enhanced relative to similar models with low $\tan β$, with $τ\to μgamma$ providing a decisive test of such models in the near future.

Minimal Supersymmetric $SU(4) \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$

We present a minimal string-inspired supersymmetric $SU(4) \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ model, and provide a detailed analysis of the symmetry breaking potential in this model, based on a generalisation of that recently proposed by Dvali, Lazarides and Shafi. The model contains a global U(1) R-symmetry and reduces to the MSSM at low energies. However it improves on the MSSM since it explains the magnitude of its $μ$ term and gives a prediction for $\tan β\simeq m_t/m_b$. It also predicts an essentially stable proton, and contains both `cold' and `hot' dark matter candidates. A period of hybrid inflation above the symmetry breaking scale is also possible in this model. Finally it suggests the existence of `heavy' charge $\pm e/6$ (colored) and $\pm e/2$ (color singlet) states.

Yukawa Textures in String Unified Models With SU(4)xO(4) Symmetry

We discuss the origin of Yukawa textures in the string-inspired and string derived models based on the gauge group SU(4)xSU(2)_LxSU(2)_R supplemented by a U(1)_X gauged family symmetry. The gauge symmetries are broken down to those of the minimal supersymmetric standard model which is the effective theory below 10^16 GeV. The combination of the U(1)_X family symmetry and the Pati-Salam gauge group leads to a successful and predictive set of Yukawa textures involving two kinds of texture zeroes: horizontal and vertical texture zeroes. We discuss both symmetric and non-symmetric textures in models of this kind, and in the second case perform a detailed numerical fit to the charged fermion mass and mixing data. Two of the Yukawa textures allow a low energy fit to the data with a total chi^2 of 0.39 and 1.02 respectively, for three degrees of freedom. We also make a first attempt at deriving the non - renormalisable operators required for the Yukawa textures from string theory.

String Gauge Unification and Infra-red Fixed Points in MSSM+X Models

In order to achieve gauge unification at the string scale M_X sim 5.10^17 GeV in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) it is necessary to add extra gauge non-singlet representations at an intermediate scale M_I<M_X, leading to a class of models which we refer to as MSSM+X models. We perform a detailed analysis of a large class of MSSM+X models and find that the number of (3,1) representations added must be greater than the total of the number of (3,2) and (1,2) representations. Predictions of M_I, M_X and alpha(M_X) are obtained for models with up to 5 extra vector representations than the MSSM\@. Upper bounds on the U(1) string gauge normalisation k_1 and the sum of the squares of the hypercharge assignments of the extra matter are also obtained for the models. We also study the infra-red fixed point behaviour of the top quark Yukawa coupling in a large class of MSSM+X models and find that the low energy MSSM quasi-fixed point prediction of the top quark mass is more likely to be realised in these theories than in the MSSM. In other words the top quark tends to be heavier in MSSM+X models than in the MSSM. The implementation of a U(1)_X family symmetry into MSSM+X models to account for the Standard Model fermion masses is discussed and a particular viable model is presented.

Fermion Masses in a Supersymmetric SU(4)xSU(2)_LxSU(2)_R Model

We calculate quark and lepton masses and quark mixing angles in the framework of a supersymmetric SU(4)$\otimes$SU(2)$_L\otimes$SU(2)$_R$ model where the gauge group is broken at 10$^{16}$ GeV. The model predicts third family top-bottom-tau Yukawa unification, as in minimal SO(10). The other smaller Yukawa couplings are assumed to arise from non-renormalisable operators suppressed by powers of some heavy scale. We perform a systematic operator analysis of the model in order to find the minimum set of operators which describe the low energy quark and lepton masses, and quark mixing angles consistent with low-energy phenomenology. A novel feature of the model is the possibility of asymmetric texture zeroes in the Yukawa matrices at the scale of the new physics. Successful predictions are obtained for $m_t$, $\tan β$, $m_s/m_μ$, $m_d/m_e$ and $V_{ub}$ in terms of a CP violating phase $ϕ$. For example, we predict $\tan β= 35-65$, $m_t = 130 - 190$ GeV, and $|V_{ub}|>0.0040$.

Resolving the Constrained Minimal and Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Models

We perform a detailed analysis of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM), imposing the constraints of two-loop gauge coupling unification, universal soft supersymmetry breaking and the correct pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking. We compare our results with those for the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) using closely related techniques and, as far as possible, a common set of input and output variables. In general, in the constrained NMSSM, there are much stronger correlations between parameters than in the constrained MSSM, and we map out the allowed parameter space. We also give a detailed discussion of how to resolve the two models experimentally, concentrating primarily on the prospects at LEPII.

Radiative Corrections to Higgs Boson Masses in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We perform a systematic study of radiative corrections to the masses of the Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) augmented by a single gauge singlet, the so-called next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). Our method is based on the one-loop effective potential and includes effects of top quark, squark, Higgs and Higgsino loops. We discuss the renormalisation group flows of Yukawa couplings and the upper bound on the lightest CP-even neutral Higgs boson mass as a function of the heavier stop mass and top mass. We then give a general discussion of Higgs boson phenomenology including radiative corrections. We survey as much of the parameter space of the Higgs sector of the NMSSM as is practicable, and analyse the full spectrum of Higgs masses and couplings in these regions of parameter space. Characteristic signatures of the NMSSM such as light charged bosons and weakly coupled neutral scalars are discussed, as are the relative sizes of the various radiative corrections. The MSSM is also discussed as a limiting case of the NMSSM for comparison.
