Effect of charging-up on the uniformity of a single mask triple GEM detector

The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector is one of the advanced members of the Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) family, used in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments as a tracking device due to its high rate handling capability and good spatial resolution. The uniformity in the performance of the detector is an essential criterion for any tracking device. The presence of the dielectric medium (Kapton) inside the active volume of the GEM chamber changes its behaviour when exposed to external irradiation. This phenomenon is known as the charging-up effect. In this article, the uniformity in terms of gain, energy resolution and count rate of a Single Mask (SM) triple GEM chamber of dimension 10 cm $\times$ 10 cm are reported for both the charged-up and uncharged GEM foils.

Lepton polarization asymmetry in $B_(s,d)^*$ arrow $μ^+ μ^-$ with new Z' couplings

We study the effect of non-universal $Z'$ boson on the rare leptonic decay modes of $B_s^*$ mesons, mediated by $b arrow sll$ quark transition. Rare B decays are sensitive to various new physics operators. As B mesons are composite particles, such decay modes of the excited states are ideal for probing new physics beyond the standard model. We have constrained our model parameters from $B_(s,d)-$ {B bar(s,d)}$ mixing data to predict the lepton polarization asymmetry of $B_(s,d)^*$ arrow $μ^+ μ^-$ channel. It is found that this asymmetry deviates from its SM prediction along with the $Z'$effect

A possible solution of $B$ arrow $ππ$ puzzle in Z' model

The discrepancies among the measurements of branching ratios and CP asymmetries of $B$ arrow $ππ$ decays such as large direct CP asymmetry for $B^0 $ arrow $π^+ π^-$ mode and large branching ratio for $B^0$ arrow $π^0 π^0$ mode originate the $B$ arrow $ππ$ puzzle. According to diagrammatic approach of this $b$ arrow $d$ transition the small ratio of color-suppressed amplitude (C) to color-allowed one (T) contradicts between the standard model (SM) approach and the experimental values. To make out the ambiguity we need to scrutinize the decays with different topological amplitudes. In this paper, the decays are studied in the SM by taking different values of C/T as constraints. We find that larger ratio of C/T is explained successfully in the SM but the lower ratio is not for which new physics (NP) is needed. The NP contribution can be included in $B$ arrow $ππ$ decays at tree level by Z' boson. Here, we find that Z' model can explain the puzzle by providing a good solution for lower ratio of C/T.

Charged Higgs Contribution on B_c decays into (D_s,D_s^*)l^+ l^-

In this paper, we study rare semileptonic decays of B_c meson in the context of type-I, II, and III two Higgs doublet model. We follow the relativistic quark model for parameterizing the form factors used in matrix elements of weak transitions between the corresponding meson states. We investigate the observables such as branching ratio, lepton polarization asymmetry, forward-backward asymmetry, etc. and analyze the dependence of these quantities on the model parameters. We have found that there are noticeable sensitivity of these observables for charged Higgs boson, which may provide a powerful probe to the standard model and new physics beyond it.

Implication of Z-mediated FCNC on semileptonic decays $B_s\toϕl^+l^-$ and $B^+\to K^+ l^+ l^-$

Rare B meson decays mediated by flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) transition play interesting role to probe the flavour sector of the standard model (SM). Generally at the tree level, FCNC processes are not allowed in the SM but occurs at the loop levels. This gives an excellent hunting ground for new physics (NP). From various experimental studies it is found that the FCNC processes having quark level transition $b \to s$ are challenging. Here, we investigate different kinematic observables like forward-backward asymmetry, differential branching ratio and lepton polarization asymmetry for semileptonic rare B decay modes $B_s \to ϕl^+ l^-$ and $B^+ \to K^+ l^+ l^-$ ($l= μ,τ$) considering the contribution of Z-mediated FCNC. A noticeable deviation of the observables for these decay channels from the SM value is found because of non-universal $Z$-$bs$ coupling.

Investigation of rare semileptonic $ B_c$ decays into $(D_(s,d)^((*)))μ^+ μ^-$ decays with non-universal $ Z'$ effect

In this paper, we analyze different decay observables of semileptonic $ B_c$ decays into $(D_(s,d)^((*)))μ^+ μ^-$ such as branching ratio, forward-backward asymmetry, polarization fraction and lepton polarization asymmetry in the non-universal Z' model. We have also studied the dependence of branching fraction to the new model parameters. Here, we have found that the values of different decay parameters increase in the Z' model, which provides a possible way out for the search of new physics as well as the unknown phenomena of charm B meson.

Modulational instability of dust-ion-acoustic waves and associated envelope solitons in a non-thermal plasma

A theoretical investigation has been made to understand the mechanism of the formation of both bright and dark envelope soltions associated with dust-ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) propagating in an unmagnetized three component dusty plasma medium having inertial warm positive ions and negative dust grains, and inertialess non-thermal Cairns' distributed electrons. A nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is derived by employing reductive perturbation method. The effects of plasma parameters, viz., $γ_2$ (the ratio of the positive ion temperature to electron temperature times the charge state of ion) and $ν$ (the ratio of the charge state of negative dust grain to positive ion) on the modulational instability of DIAW which is governed by NLSE, are extensively studied. It is found that increasing the value of the ion (electron) temperature reduces (enhances) the critical wave number ($k_c$). The results of our present theoretical work may be used to interpret the nonlinear electrostatic structures which can exist in many astrophysical environments and laboratory plasmas.

Prompt-delayed $γ$-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich $^{119,121}$In isotopes

The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction $^{9}$Be($^{238}$U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich $^{119,121}$In isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed $γ$-ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of $100~\rm{ns} - 200~μ\rm{s}$. In the odd-$A$ $^{119,121}$In isotopes, indications of a short half-life $19/2^{-}$ isomeric state, in addition to the previously known $25/2^{+}$ isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the $25/2^{+}$ isomer in $^{121}$In were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. The $\langle πg_{9/2} νh_{11/2};I \arrowvert \hat{\mathcal{H}}\arrowvert πg_{9/2} νh_{11/2};I\rangle$ two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of $E(29/2^{+}) - E(25/2^{+})$ in odd-In (with dominant configuration $πg_{9/2}^{-1}νh_{11/2}^{-2}$ and maximum aligned spin of $29/2^{+}$) and (ii) increasing trend of $E(27/2^{+}) - E(23/2^{+})$ in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration $πg_{7/2}^{+1}νh_{11/2}^{-2}$ and maximum aligned spin of $27/2^{+}$) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively.

Scission configuration of $^{239}$U from yields and kinetic information of fission fragments

The simultaneous measurement of the isotopic fission-fragment yields and fission-fragment velocities of $^{239}$U has been performed for the first time. The $^{239}$U fissioning system was produced in one-neutron transfer reactions between a $^{238}$U beam at 5.88 MeV/nucleon and a $^{9}$Be target. The combination of inverse kinematics at low energy and the use of the VAMOS++ spectrometer at the GANIL facility allows the isotopic identification of the full fission-fragment distribution and their velocity in the reference frame of the fissioning system. The proton and neutron content of the fragments at scission, their total kinetic and total excitation energy, as well as the neutron multiplicity were determined. Information from the scission point configuration is obtained from these observables and the correlation between them. The role of the octupole-deformed proton and neutron shells in the fission-fragment production is discussed.

Coherent and incoherent aspects of polariton dynamics in semiconductor microcavities

The interaction between coherent polaritons and incoherent excitons plays an important role in polariton physics. Using resonant pump-probe spectroscopy with selective excitation of single polariton branches, we investigate the different dephasing mechanisms responsible for generating a long-lived exciton reservoir. As expected, pumping the upper polariton results in a strong dephasing process that leads to the generation of a long lived reservoir. Unexpectedly, we observe an efficient reservoir creation while exciting only the lower polariton branch when the detuning is increased towards positive detuning. We propose a simple theoretical model, the polaritonic Bloch equations, to describe the dynamics of the system.

The main aim of the study is to perform the long-term stability test of gain of the single mask triple GEM detector. A simple method is used for this long- term stability test using a radioactive X-ray source with high activity. The test is continued till accumulation of charge per unit area > 12.0 mC/mm2. The details of the chamber fabrication, the test set-up, the method of measurement and the test results are presented in this paper.

The results of the systematic measurements has been presented.

Calibration and performance of the STAR Muon Telescope Detector using cosmic rays

We report the timing and spatial resolution from the Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) installed in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Cosmic ray muons traversing the STAR detector have an average transverse momentum of 6 GeV/c. Due to their very small multiple scattering, these cosmic muons provide an ideal tool to calibrate the detectors and measure their timing and spatial resolution. The values obtained were ~100 ps and ~1-2 cm, respectively. These values are comparable to those obtained from cosmic-ray bench tests and test beams.

Development of Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) for medical imaging

The low cost and high resolution Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) opens up a new possibility to find an efficient alternative detector for the Time of Flight (TOF) based Positron Emission Tomography, where the sensitivity of the system depends largely on the time resolution of the detector. In a layered structure, suitable converters can be used to increase the photon detection efficiency. In this paper results of the cosmic ray test of a four-gap bakelite-based prototype MRPC operated in streamer mode and six-gap glass-based MRPC operated in avalanche mode are discussed.

Resonant Slepton Production Yields CMS $eejj$ and $ejj$ Missing $p_T$ Excesses

Recent CMS searches for di-leptoquark production report local excesses of 2.4$σ$ in a $eejj$ channel and 2.6$σ$ in a $ejj$ missing $p_T$ channel. Here, we simultaneously explain both excesses with resonant slepton production in ${\mathcal R}-$parity violating supersymmetry (SUSY). We consider resonant slepton production, which decays to a lepton and a chargino/neutralino, followed by three-body decays of the neutralino/chargino via an $\mathcal{R}-$parity violating coupling. There are regions of parameter space which are also compatible at the 95% confidence level (CL) with a 2.8$σ$ $eejj$ excess in a recent CMS $W_R$ search, while being compatible with other direct search constraints. Phase-II of the GERDA neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) experiment will probe a sizeable portion of the good-fit region.

Development of a GEM based detector for the CBM Muon Chamber (MUCH)

The characteristics of triple GEM detectors have been studied systematically by using cosmic ray muons. The minimum ionizing particle (MIP) spectra has been taken for different GEM voltage setting. Efficiency of GEM detector has been measured for cosmic ray. At high rate operation of GEMs the value of the protection resistor influences the gain and the stability. This feature has been investigated varying both the rate and the value of the protection resistor. This measurement has been performed using both X-ray generator and Fe55 source. The ageing and long-term stability of GEM based detectors has been studied employing both X-ray generator and Fe55 source. The ageing study of one GEM module is performed by using a 8 keV Cu X-ray generator to verify the stability and integrity of the GEM detectors over a longer period of time. The accumulated charge on the detector is calculated from the rate of the X-ray and the average gain of the detector. The details of the measurement and results has been described in this article.

Exploring the origin of degenerate doublet bands in $^{106}$Ag

The electromagnetic transition probabilities of the excited levels for the two nearly degenerate bands of $^{106}$Ag have been measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. A comparison with the calculated values using triaxial projected shell model approach indicates that these bands originate from two different quasi-particle configurations but constructed from the same mean-field deformation.

Measurement of electrical properties of electrode materials for the bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers

Single gap (gas gap 2 mm) bakelite Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) modules of various sizes from 10 cm \times 10 cm to 1 m \times 1 m have been fabricated, characterized and optimized for efficiency and time resolution. Thin layers of different grades of silicone compound are applied to the inner electrode surfaces to make them smooth and also to reduce the surface resistivity. In the silicone coated RPCs an efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode of operation. Before fabrication of detectors the electrical properties such as bulk resistivity and surface resistivity of the electrode materials are measured carefully. Effectiveness of different silicone coating in modifying the surface resistivity was evaluated by an instrument developed for monitoring the I-V curve of a high resistive surface. The results indicate definite correlation of the detector efficiency for the atmospheric muons and the RPC noise rates with the surface resistivity and its variation with the applied bias voltage. It was also found that the surface resistivity varies for different grades of silicone material applied as coating, and the results are found to be consistent with the detector efficiency and noise rate measurements done with these RPCs.

Performances of silicone coated high resistive bakelite RPC

Performances of several single gap (gas gap 2 mm) prototype Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of high resistive (ρ \sim 1010 - 1012 Ω cm) bakelite, commercially available in India have been studied in recent times. To make the inner electrode surfaces smooth, a thin coating of silicone has been applied. An efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode. The induced charge distributions of those silicone coated RPC are studied and the results are presented. A numerical study on the effect of surface roughness of the resistive electrodes on the electric field of the device has been carried out using Garfield-neBEM code. A few results for a simplified model representing surface roughness, measured using a surface profilometer for the bakelite surfaces, have also been presented.

A Josephson Quantum Electron Pump

A macroscopic fluid pump works according to the law of Newtonian mechanics and transfers a large number of molecules per cycle (of the order of 10^23). By contrast, a nano-scale charge pump can be thought as the ultimate miniaturization of a pump, with its operation being subject to quantum mechanics and with only few electrons or even fractions of electrons transfered per cycle. It generates a direct current in the absence of an applied voltage exploiting the time-dependence of some properties of a nano-scale conductor. The idea of pumping in nanostructures was discussed theoretically a few decades ago [1-4]. So far, nano-scale pumps have been realised only in system exhibiting strong Coulombic effects [5-12], whereas evidence for pumping in the absence of Coulomb-blockade has been elusive. A pioneering experiment by Switkes et al. [13] evidenced the difficulty of modulating in time the properties of an open mesoscopic conductor at cryogenic temperatures without generating undesired bias voltages due to stray capacitances [14,15]. One possible solution to this problem is to use the ac Josephson effect to induce periodically time-dependent Andreev-reflection amplitudes in a hybrid normal-superconducting system [16]. Here we report the experimental detection of charge flow in an unbiased InAs nanowire (NW) embedded in a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). In this system, pumping may occur via the cyclic modulation of the phase of the order parameter of different superconducting electrodes. The symmetry of the current with respect to the enclosed magnetic flux [17,18] and bias SQUID current is a discriminating signature of pumping. Currents exceeding 20 pA are measured at 250 mK, and exhibit symmetries compatible with a pumping mechanism in this setup which realizes a Josephson quantum electron pump (JQEP).

A novel technique for image steganography based on Block-DCT and Huffman Encoding

Image steganography is the art of hiding information into a cover image. This paper presents a novel technique for Image steganography based on Block-DCT, where DCT is used to transform original image (cover image) blocks from spatial domain to frequency domain. Firstly a gray level image of size M x N is divided into no joint 8 x 8 blocks and a two dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (2-d DCT) is performed on each of the P = MN / 64 blocks. Then Huffman encoding is also performed on the secret messages/images before embedding and each bit of Huffman code of secret message/image is embedded in the frequency domain by altering the least significant bit of each of the DCT coefficients of cover image blocks. The experimental results show that the algorithm has a high capacity and a good invisibility. Moreover PSNR of cover image with stego-image shows the better results in comparison with other existing steganography approaches. Furthermore, satisfactory security is maintained since the secret message/image cannot be extracted without knowing decoding rules and Huffman table.

Development of linseed oil-free bakelite resistive plate chambers

In this paper we would like to present a few characteristics of the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of a particular grade of bakelite paper laminates (P-120, NEMA LI-1989 Grade XXX), produced and commercially available in India. This particular grade is used for high voltage insulation in humid conditions. The chambers are tested with cosmic rays in the streamer mode using argon, tetrafluroethane and isobutane in 34:59:7 mixing ratio. In the first set of detectors made with such grade, a thin coating of silicone fluid on the inner surfaces of the bakelite was found to be necessary for operation of the detector. Those silicone coated RPCs were found to give satisfactory performance with stable efficiency of >90% continuously for a long period as reported earlier. Results of the crosstalk measurement of these silicone coated RPC will be presented in this paper. Very recently RPCs made with the same grade of bakelite but having better surface finish, are found to give equivalent performance even without any coating inside. Preliminary results of this type of RPCs are also being presented.

Electronic transport properties of ternary Cd1-xZnxS nanowire network

We present electronic transport characteristics of ternary alloy Cd1-xZnxS nanowire networks in the dark and under white light illumination. Compared to the negligible dark current, we observed a photocurrent enhancement up to 4 orders of magnitude at intensity of 460 mW/cm2. The time constant of the dynamic photoresponse is ~5 sec. The current-voltage characteristics at different intensities show Ohmic behavior at low bias and space charge limited conduction (SCLC) at higher bias voltages. The SCLC behavior and slow time response indicate that the charge transport is dominated by tunneling at the percolating inter-nanowire junctions.

The CWKB Method of Particle Production in Periodic Potential

In this work we study the particle production in time dependent periodic potential using the method of complex time WKB (CWKB) approximation. In the inflationary cosmology at the end of inflationary stage, the potential becomes time dependent as well as periodic. Reheating occurs due to particle production by the oscillating inflaton field. Using CWKB we obtain almost identical results on catastrophic particle production as obtained by others.

Decoherence in the Starobinsky Model

Starobinsky described an inflationary scenario in which quantum corrections to vacuum Einstein equations drive the inflation. The quantum cosmology of the model is studied by solving the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. A connection between uncertainty requirement, randomness in initial states and curvature fluctuation is studied with a Schrödinger-type equation through a time parameter prescription. The result obtained is applied to understand the decoherence mechanism in quantum gravity in the Starobinsky description.

Evolution of Dynamical Coupling in Scalar Tensor Theory from Noether Symmetry

We present the gravitational coupling function $ω(ϕ)$ in the vacuum scalar-tensor theory as allowed by the Noether symmetry. We also obtain some exact cosmological solutions in the spatially homogeneous and isotropic background thereby showing that the attractor mechanism is not effective enough to reduce the theory to Einstein theory. It is observed that, asymptotically, the scalar tensor theory goes over to Einstein theory with finite value of $ω$. This work thus supports earlier works in this direction.

Quantum Gravity Equation In Schroedinger Form In Minisuperspace Description

We start from classical Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity to obtain the Einstein-Hamiltonian-Jacobi equation. We obtain a time parameter prescription demanding that geometry itself determines the time, not the matter field, such that the time so defined being equivalent to the time that enters into the Schroedinger equation. Without any reference to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and without invoking the expansion of exponent in WKB wavefunction in powers of Planck mass, we obtain an equation for quantum gravity in Schroedinger form containing time. We restrict ourselves to a minisuperspace description. Unlike matter field equation our equation is equivalent to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the sense that our solutions reproduce also the wavefunction of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation provided one evaluates the normalization constant according to the wormhole dominance proposal recently proposed by us.

Schroedinger Wheeler-DeWitt Equation In Multidimensional Cosmology

We study multidimensional cosmology to obtain the wavefunction of the universe using wormhole dominance proposal. Using a prescription for time we obtain the Schroedinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation without any reference to WD equation and WKB ansatz for WD wavefunction. It is found that the Hartle-Hawking or wormhole-dominated boundary conditions serve as a seed for inflation as well as for Gaussian type ansatz to Schroedinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation.

Schwinger's Result On Particle Production From Complex Paths WKB Approximation

This paper presents the derivation of Schwinger's gauge invariant result of $Im \cal{L}_{eff}$ upto one loop approximation, for particle production in an uniform electric field through the method of complex trajectory WKB approximation (CWKB). The CWKB proposed by one of the author's \cite{bis:ijtp} looks upon particle production as due to the motion of a particle in complex space-time plane, thereby requiring tunneling paths both in space and time. Recently \cite{srini:iucaa,srini1:iucaa} there have been some efforts to calculate the reflection and transmission co-efficients for particle production in uniform electric field that differ from our expressions for the same. In this paper we clarify the confusion in this regard and establish the correctness of CWKB.

The Complex Time WKB Approximation And Particle Production

The complex time WKB (CWKB) approximation has been an effective technique to understand particle production in curved as well as in flat spacetime. Earlier we obtained the standard results on particle production in time dependent gauge in various curved spacetime. In the present work we generalize the technique of CWKB to the equivalent problems in space dependent gauge. Using CWKB, we first obtain the gauge invariant result for particle production in Minkowski spacetime in strong electric field. We then carry out particle production in de-Sitter spacetime in space dependent gauge and obtain the same result that we obtained earlier in time dependent gauge. The results obtained for de-Sitter spacetime has a obvious extension to particle production in black hole spacetime. It is found that the origin of Planckian spectrum is due to repeated reflections between the turning points. As mentioned earlier, it is now explicitly shown that particle production is accompanied by rotation of currents.
