Simultaneous measurement of proton and lepton kinematics in quasielastic-like $ν_μ$-hydrocarbon interactions from 2 to 20 GeV

Neutrino charged-current quasielastic-like scattering, a reaction category extensively used in neutrino oscillation measurements, probes nuclear effects that govern neutrino-nucleus interactions. This Letter reports the first measurement of the triple-differential cross section for $ν_μ$ quasielastic-like reactions using the hydrocarbon medium of the MINERvA detector exposed to a wide-band beam spanning 2 $\leq$ E$_ν\leq$ 20 GeV. The measurement maps the correlations among transverse and longitudinal muon momenta and summed proton kinetic energies, and compares them to predictions from a state-of-art simulation. Discrepancies are observed that likely reflect shortfalls with modeling of pion and nucleon intranuclear scattering and/or spectator nucleon ejection from struck nuclei. The separate determination of leptonic and hadronic variables can inform experimental approaches to neutrino-energy estimation.

Vertex finding in neutrino-nucleus interaction: A Model Architecture Comparison

We compare different neural network architectures for Machine Learning (ML) algorithms designed to identify the neutrino interaction vertex position in the MINERvA detector. The architectures developed and optimized by hand are compared with the architectures developed in an automated way using the package "Multi-node Evolutionary Neural Networks for Deep Learning" (MENNDL), developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The two architectures resulted in a similar performance which suggests that the systematics associated with the optimized network architecture are small. Furthermore, we find that while the domain expert hand-tuned network was the best performer, the differences were negligible and the auto-generated networks performed well. There is always a trade-off between human, and computer resources for network optimization and this work suggests that automated optimization, assuming resources are available, provides a compelling way to save significant expert time.

Effect of Sintering Temperature on Structural and Magnetic Properties of Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 Ferrite: Synthesized from Nanocrystalline Powders

The effect of sintering temperatures (Ts) on the structural and magnetic properties of Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 (NZFO) ferrites synthesized by conventional double sintering method has been reported. The samples are sintered at 1200, 1250 and 1300 °C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the formation of a single phase cubic spinel structure of the sample. The magnetic parameters such as saturation magnetization, Ms; coercive field, Hc; remanent magnetization, Mr and Bohr magneton, μB are determined and well compared with reported values. The obtained values are found to be 71.94 emu/gm and 1.2 Oe for Ms and Hc, respectively at Ts=1300 oC. Curie temperature (Tc) at various Ts has also been calculated. It is noteworthy to note that the sample with a very low Hc could be used in transformer core and inductor applications.

Structural Properties, Impedance Spectroscopy and Dielectric Spin Relaxation of Ni-Zn Ferrite Synthesized by Double Sintering Technique

Structural properties, impedance, dielectric and electric modulus spectra have been used to investigate the sintering temperature (Ts) effect on the single phase cubic spinel Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 (NZFO) ceramics synthesized by standard ceramic technique. Enhancement of dielectric constants is observed with increasing Ts. The collective contribution of n-type and p-type carriers yields a clear peak in notable unusual dielectric behavior is successfully explained by the Rezlescu model. The non-Debye type long range dielectric relaxation phenomena is explained by electric modulus formalism. Fast response of the grain boundaries of the sample sintered at lower Ts sample leading to small dielectric spin relaxation time, t (several nanoseconds) have been determined using electric modulus spectra for the samples sintered at different Ts. Two clear semicircles in impedance Cole-Cole plot have also been successfully explained by employing two parallel RC equivalent circuits in series configuration taking into account no electrode contribution. Such a long relaxation time in NZFO ceramics could suitably be used in nanoscale spintronic devices.

Finding RR Lyrae Stars with SkyMapper: an Observational Test

One of the major science goals of the SkyMapper Survey of the Southern Hemisphere sky is the determination of the shape and extent of the halo of the Galaxy. In this paper we quantify the likely efficiency and completeness of the survey as regards the detection of RR Lyrae variable stars, which are excellent tracers of the halo stellar population. We have accomplished this via observations of the RR Lyrae-rich globular cluster NGC 3201. We find that for single epoch uvgri observations followed by two further epochs of g, r imaging, as per the intended three-epoch survey strategy, we recover known RR Lyraes with a completeness exceeding 90%. We also investigate boundaries in the gravity-sensitive single-epoch two-color diagram that yield high completeness and high efficiency (i.e., minimal contamination by non-RR Lyraes) and the general usefulness of this diagram in separating populations.
