Electromagnetic field energy in an absorptive medium with temporal and spatial dispersion

General relations for electromagnetic field energy outside the transparency domain are proposed. It is shown that charged particle contribution to the energy of electromagnetic perturbations in the general case can be described in terms of a bilinear combination of the dielectric polarizability of the medium. The explicit form of such contribution is found. The relations obtained are used to generalize the Planck law to the case of an absorptive medium.

Primordial plasma: influence of non-ideality on equilibrium radiation

The asymptotic behavior of the equilibrium radiation in Maxwellian plasma is studied for the low--frequency region. It is shown, that the equilibrium radiation can essentially deviate from the Planck law even for a weakly non-ideal plasma. The deviation from the Planck distribution is described by the transverse dielectric permittivity which takes into account both frequency and spatial dispersion. The influence of plasma non-ideality increases with the non-ideality parameter in the dielectric permittivity. The spectral energy distribution of the equilibrium radiation essentially changes in the region of observable frequencies. At asymptotically low frequencies, the equilibrium radiation begins to exhibit power behavior instead the logarithmic one. The results indicate that the spectral energy distribution of radiation could be different then the Planck one in the primordial plasma of the early Universe.

On the ground state energy of the inhomogeneous Bose gas

Within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, an explicit expression for the ground state energy of inhomogeneous Bose gas is derived as a functional of the inhomogeneous density of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The results obtained are based on existence of the off-diagonal long-range order in the single-particle density matrix for systems with a Bose-Einstein condensate. This makes it possible to avoid the use of anomalous averages. The explicit form of the kinetic energy, which differs from one in the Gross-Pitaevski approach, is found. This form is valid beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation and can be applied for arbitrary strong interparticle interaction.

Frequency depending permittivity of the Coulomb system with Bose-Einstein condensate

The second-order singularity is found in the low-frequency region of the permittivity of a homogeneous and isotropic system of charged particles consisting of electrons and boson nuclei. This singularity is caused by the existence of a Bose-Einstein condensate for nuclei. The result obtained leads to the existence of the "nuclei superconductivity", which can be experimentally verified in superfluid He II. The results of the proposed an experiment can be considered as a direct proof of the existence of a Bose-Einstein condensate in superfluid He II.

Analysis of linear and nonlinear conductivity of plasma-like systems on the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation

The problems of high linear conductivity in an electric field, as well as nonlinear conductivity, are considered for plasma-like systems. First, we recall several observations of nonlinear fast charge transport in dusty plasma, molecular chains, lattices, conducting polymers and semiconductor layers. Exploring the role of noise we introduce the generalized Fokker-Planck equation. Second, one-dimensional models are considered on the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation with active and passive velocity-dependent friction including an external electrical field. On this basis it is possible to find the linear and nonlinear conductivities for electrons and other charged particles in a homogeneous external field. It is shown that the velocity dependence of the friction coefficient can lead to an essential increase of the electron average velocity and the corresponding conductivity in comparison with the usual model of constant friction, which is described by the Drude-type conductivity. Applications including novel forms of controlled charge transfer and non-Ohmic conductance are discussed.

Jeans instability and anti-screening in gravitational-antigravitational model of Universe

The hypothesis of antigravitational interaction of elementary particles and antiparticles is considered on the basis of the simple two-component hydrodynamic model with gravitational repulsion and attraction. It is shown increasing of the Jeans instability rate, the presence of antiscreening and the dominative role of the gravitational repulsion as a possible mechanism for spatial separation of matter and antimatter in Universe, as well as the observable acceleration of the far galaxies. The sound wave is found for the two-component gravitational-antigravitational system, which starts for k = 0 in the case of annihilation neglecting. The suggested approach permits to reestablish the idea about baryon symmetry of Universe, causing its steady flatness of the large scale and accelerated Universe expansion.

Universality of phonon-roton spectrum in liquids and superfluidity of He II

Based on numerous experimental data on inelastic neutron and X-ray scattering in liquids, we assert that the phonon-roton spectrum of elementary excitations, predicted by Landau for superfluid helium, is a universal property of the liquid state. We show that the existence of the roton minimum in the spectrum of collective excitations is caused by the short-range order in liquids. Using the superfluidity criterion, we assume that one more branch of collective excitations should exist in He II, whose energy spectrum differs from the phonon-roton spectrum.

Aharonov--Bohm effect, electrodynamics postulates, and Lorentz condition

The problem of the relation between the Ahronov-Bohm effect and traditional postulates of electrodynamics, which claim that only electric and magnetic fields are observable, is resolved by denial of the statement about validity of the Maxwell equations for microscopic fields. We proceed from the idea that the Maxwell equations, as the generalization of experimental data, are valid only for averaged values. We show that microscopic electrodynamics should be based on postulation of the d'Alembert equations for four-vector of the electromagnetic field potential. The Lorentz condition is valid only for the averages and provides the implementation of the Maxwell equations for averages. This concept eliminates the problem of electromagnetic field quantization and provides the correctness of all known results of quantum electrodynamics. Therefore, the "virtuality" of the longitudinal and scalar photons has a formal mathematical character, conditioned by the Maxwell equations for averaged fields. The longitudinal and scalar photons provide not only the Coulomb interaction of charged particles, but also allow the electrical Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Metal - non-metal transition and the second critical point in expanded metals

Based on the non-relativistic Coulomb model within which the matter is a system of interacting electrons and nuclei, using the quantum field theory and linear response theory methods, opportunity for the existence of the second critical point in expanded metals, which is directly related to the metal--nonmetal transition, predicted by Landau and Zeldovitch, is theoretically justified. It is shown that the matter at the second critical point is in the state of true dielectric with zero static conductivity. The results obtained are in agreement with recent experiments for expanded metals. The existence of the second critical point is caused by the initial multi-component nature of the matter consisting of electrons and nuclei and the long-range character of the Coulomb interaction. Universality of rotons in liquids, generalized superfluidity criterion and helons in helium II

An analysis of experimental data shows that, in addition to phonon--roton excitations in superfluid helium, there necessarily exist at least one branch of elementary excitations whose energy spectrum strongly depends on temperature. On this basis, the Landau superfluidity criterion is generalized for several branches of elementary excitations, taking into account that the critical velocity should vanish during the phase transition of liquid helium from the superfluid state to the normal state. We suppose that a new spectrum of excitations with a gap, depending on interparticle interaction, corresponds to the transition of helium to superfluid state. This gap exists only in superfluid state and disappears at the transition temperature to normal state. The phonon-roton branch of excitations has no crucial influence on superfluidity. Rotons, as well as phonons, are not the specific excitations for the superfluid helium, but exist as universal excitations in liquid state, and form the continuous branch of excitations in different liquids. This point of view is confirmed experimentally and numerically.

preprint2012arXiv

Elementary excitations and heat capacity singularity in superfluid helium

We proceed from the premise that the spectrum of elementary excitations in the normal component in Landau's theory of superfluidity should depend on the superfluid helium temperature. This leads to generalization of the Landau superfluidity criterion. On this basis, taking into account available experimental data on inelastic neutron scattering, it is shown that, in addition to phonon--roton excitations, there is one more type of elementary excitations in superfluid helium, which we called helons. The energy spectrum with such a momentum dependence was first proposed by Landau. The helon energy spectrum shape and its temperature dependence make it possible to explain the singular behavior of the heat capacity of superfluid helium near its phase transition to the normal state.

Ground state energy in the external field and the problem of density functional approximations

Based on the Schrodinger equation, exact expressions for the non-relativistic particle energy in the local external field and the external field potential are derived as inhomogeneous density functionals. On this basis, it is shown that, when considering more than two noninteracting electrons, the energy of such a system cannot be an inhomogeneous density functional. The result is extended for the system of interacting electrons. This means that the Hohenberg-Kohn lemma which assert that in the ground state to each inhomogeneous density corresponds only one potential of the external field cannot be a justification of the existence of the universal density functional in the general case. At the same time, statements of the density functional theory remain valid when considering any number of noninteracting ground-state bosons due to the Bose condensation effect.

Theory of degenerate Bose gas without anomalous averages

Theory of a weakly non-ideal Bose gas in the canonical ensemble is developed without assumption of the C-number representation of the creation and annihilation operators with zero momentum. It is shown that the pole of the "density-density" Green's function exactly coincides with the Bogolybov's phonon-roton spectrum of excitations. At the same time, a gap exists in the one-particle excitation spectrum . This gap is related to the density of particles in the "condensate".

Advances in the studies of anomalous diffusion in velocity space

A generalized Fokker-Planck equation is derived to describe particle kinetics in specific situations when the probability transition function (PTF) has a long tail in momentum space. The equation is valid for an arbitrary value of the transferred in a collision act momentum and for the arbitrary mass ratio of the interacting particles. On the basis of the generalized Fokker-Planck equation anomalous diffusion in velocity space is considered for hard sphere model of particle interactions, Coulomb collisions and interactions typical for dusty plasmas. The example of dusty plasma interaction is peculiar in way that it leads to a new term in the obtained Fokker-Planck-iike equation due to the dependence of the differential cross-section on the relative velocity. The theory is also applied to diffusion of heavy particles in the ambience of light particles with a prescribed power-type velocity distribution function. In general, the theory is applicable to consideration of anomalous diffusion in velocity space if the typical velocity of one sort of particles undergoing diffusion is small compared to the typical velocity of the background particles.

Exact Density Functional for the Non-Relativistic Particle Energy in the Local External Field

Anomalous Transport in Velocity Space, from Fokker-Planck to General Equation

The problem of anomalous diffusion in momentum (velocity) space is considered based on the master equation and the appropriate probability transition function (PTF). The approach recently developed by the author for coordinate space, is applied with necessary modifications to velocity space. A new general equation for the time evolution of the momentum distribution function in momentum space is derived. This allows the solution of various problems of anomalous transport when the probability transition function (PTF) has a long tail in momentum space. For the opposite cases of the PTF rapidly decreasing as a function of transfer momenta (when large transfer momenta are strongly suppressed), the developed approach allows us to consider strongly non-equilibrium cases of the system evolution. The stationary and non-stationary solutions are studied. As an example, the particular case of the Boltzmann-type PT-function for collisions of heavy and light particles with the determined (prescribed) distribution function, which can be strongly non-equilibrium, is considered within the proposed general approach. The appropriate diffusion and friction coefficients are found. The Einstein relation between the friction and diffusion coefficients is shown to be violated in these cases.

Density functional theory and free energy of inhomogeneous electron gas

It is shown that in adiabatic approximation for nuclei the many-component Coulomb system cannot be described on the basis of the grand canonical ensemble. Using the variational Bogolyubov's procedure for the free energy, the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is proved in the canonical ensemble for inhomogeneous electron gas at finite temperature. The principal difference between consideration in the framework of quantum statistics in the canonical ensemble and quantum-mechanical consideration of a finite number of particles in infinite volume is established. The problem of universality of the density functional for describing the inhomogeneous electron density in a disordered nuclei field is considered.

Diffusion in a Time-dependent External Field

The problem of diffusion in a time-dependent (and generally inhomogeneous) external field is considered on the basis of a generalized master equation with two times, introduced in [1,2]. We consider the case of the quasi Fokker-Planck approximation, when the probability transition function for diffusion (PTD-function) does not possess a long tail in coordinate space and can be expanded as a function of instantaneous displacements. The more complicated case of long tails in the PTD will be discussed separately. We also discuss diffusion on the basis of hydrodynamic and kinetic equations and show the validity of the phenomenological approach. A new type of "collision" integral is introduced for the description of diffusion in a system of particles, which can transfer from a moving state to the rest state (with some waiting time distribution). The solution of the appropriate kinetic equation in the external field also confirms the phenomenological approach of the generalized master equation.

Finite Size Atom in the Hartree-Fock Approximation: New Substance Quasiparticle

It is shown that, in the self-consistent quantum statistical Hartree-Fock approximation, the number of electronic states localized on one nucleus is finite. This result is obtained on the basis of the general electron-nuclear model of matter and provides convergence of the atomic statistical sum and finiteness of the "atom" size. In general approach the characteristic size of the "atom" is a function of density and temperature. However, it is shown, that in a wide range of thermodynamic parameters, for relatively low temperatures, characteristic orbits and electron energy eigenvalues are independent of density and temperature. In this case, the sizes of the orbits are of order of the Bohr radius which is a minimal characteristic size in the system for typical parameters of plasma with atomic states.

Identity of electrons and ionization equilibrium

It is perhaps appropriate that, in a year marking the 90th anniversary of Meghnad Saha seminal paper (1920), new developments should call fresh attention to the problem of ionization equilibrium in gases. Ionization equilibrium is considered in the simplest "physical" model for an electronic subsystem of matter in a rarefied state, consisting of one localized electronic state in each nucleus and delocalized electronic states considered as free ones. It is shown that, despite the qualitative agreement, there is a significant quantitative difference from the results of applying the Saha formula to the degree of ionization. This is caused by the fact that the Saha formula corresponds to the "chemical" model of matter.

Kramers-Kronig Relations For The Dielectric Function And The Static Conductivity Of Coulomb Systems

The mutual influence of singularities of the dielectric permittivity e(q,w) in a Coulomb system in two limiting cases w tends to zero, q tends to zero, and opposite q tends to zero, w tends to zero is established. It is shown that the dielectric permittivity e(q,w) satisfies the Kramers-Kronig relations, which possesses the singularity due to a finite value of the static conductivity. This singularity is associated with the long "tails" of the time correlation functions.

On anomalous diffusion in a plasma in velocity space

The problem of anomalous diffusion in momentum space is considered for plasma-like systems on the basis of a new collision integral, which is appropriate for consideration of the probability transition function (PTF) with long tails in momentum space. The generalized Fokker-Planck equation for description of diffusion (in momentum space) of particles (ions, grains etc.) in a stochastic system of light particles (electrons, or electrons and ions, respectively) is applied to the evolution of the momentum particle distribution in a plasma. In a plasma the developed approach is also applicable to the diffusion of particles with an arbitrary mass relation, due to the small characteristic momentum transfer. The cases of an exponentially decreasing in momentum space (including the Boltzmann-like) kernel in the PT-function, as well as the more general kernels, which create the anomalous diffusion in velocity space due to the long tail in the PT-function, are considered. Effective friction and diffusion coefficients for plasma-like systems are found.

On the Necessary Conditions for the Validity of the Hohenberg-Kohn Theorem

It is shown that the Hohenberg-Kohn lemma and theorem are direct consequences of the statement that the ground state energy (or free energy) of a system of interacting particles in an external field is a unique functional of the potential of this field. This means that, if the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is valid, the nonuniform density in the equilibrium system and the external field potential are biunique functionals. In this case, the nonuniform density is intimately related to the inverse response function. On this basis, a regular procedure can be constructed for determining the density functional for the free energy or ground state energy.

Anomalous Diffusion in Velocity Space

The problem of anomalous diffusion in the momentum space is considered on the basis of the appropriate probability transition function (PTF). New general equation for description of the diffusion of heavy particles in the gas of the light particles is formulated on basis of the new approach similar to one in coordinate space (S. Trigger et al.). The obtained results permit to describe the various situations when the probability transition function (PTF) has a long tail in the momentum space. The effective friction and diffusion coefficients are found.

Coexistence of the "bogolons" and the one-particle spectrum of excitations with a gap in the degenerated Bose gas

Properties of the weakly non-ideal Bose gas are considered without suggestion on C-number representation of the creation and annihilation operators with zero momentum. The "density-density" correlation function and the one-particle Green function of the degenerated Bose gas are calculated on the basis of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. It is shown that the spectrum of the one-particle excitations possesses a gap whose value is connected with the density of particles in the "condensate". At the same time, the pole in the "density-density" Green function determines the phonon-roton spectrum of excitations which exactly coincides with one discovered by Bogolyubov for the collective excitations (the "bogolons").

True Dielectric and Ideal Conductor in Theory of the Dielectric Function for Coulomb System

On the basis of the exact relations the general formula for the static dielectric permittivity e(q,0) for Coulomb system is found in the region of small wave vectors q. The obtained formuladescribes the dielectric function e(q,0) of the Coulomb system in both states in the "metallic" state and in the "dielectric" one. The parameter which determines possible states of the Coulomb system - from the "true" dielectric till the "ideal" conductor is found. The exact relation for the pair correlation function for two-component system of electrons and nuclei g_ei(r) is found for the arbitrary thermodynamic parameters.
