Kinetic description of vacuum $e^+ e^-$ production in strong electric fields of arbitrary polarization

We present a detailed analysis of the self-consistent system of kinetic equations (KEs) describing electron-positron pair production from vacuum under the action of a spatially homogeneous time-dependent electric field of arbitrary polarization. The physical significance of all the basic functions of the kinetic theory is ascertained. It is demonstrated that the total system of the KEs consists of two coupled quasiparticle and spin subsystems with their integrals of motion. A projection method is proposed in order to obtain the KE system in two particular cases: linearly polarized external electric field and (2+1)-dimensional description of quasiparticles in graphene. We also address the energy conservation law taking into account the internal plasma field and describe an alternative rigorous derivation of the KE system.

Laser assisted Breit-Wheeler and Schwinger processes

The assistance of an intense optical laser pulse on electron-positron pair production by the Breit-Wheeler and Schwinger processes in XFEL fields is analyzed. The impact of a laser beam on high-energy photon collisions with XFEL photons consists in a phase space redistribution of the pairs emerging in the Breit-Wheeler sub-process. We provide numerical examples of the differential cross section for parameters related to the European XFEL. Analogously, the Schwinger type pair production in pulsed fields with oscillating components referring to a superposition of optical laser and XFEL frequencies is evaluated. The residual phase space distribution of created pairs is sensitive to the pulse shape and may differ significantly from transiently achieved mode occupations.

Pair production by Schwinger and Breit-Wheeler processes in bi-frequent fields

Counter-propagating and suitably polarized light (laser) beams can provide conditions for pair production. Here, we consider in more detail the following two situations: (i) In the homogeneity regions of anti-nodes of linearly polarized ultra-high intensity laser beams, the Schwinger process is dynamically assisted by a second high-frequency field, e.g. by a XFEL beam. (ii) A high-energy probe photon beam colliding with a superposition of co-propagating intense laser and XFEL beams gives rise to the laser assisted Breit-Wheeler process. Prospects of such bi-frequent field constellations with respect to the feasibility of conversion of light into matter are discussed.

Assisted dynamical Schwinger effect: pair production in a pulsed bifrequent field

Electron-positron pair production by the superposition of two laser pulses with different frequencies and amplitudes is analyzed as a particular realization of the assisted dynamic Schwinger effect. It is demonstrated that, within a non-perturbative kinetic equation framework, an amplification effect is conceivable for certain parameters. When both pulses have wavelengths longer than the Compton wavelength, the residual net density of produced pairs is determined by the resultant field strength. The number of pairs starts to grow rapidly if the wavelength of the high-frequency laser component gets close to the Compton wavelength.

Nonequilibrium meson production in strong fields

We develop a kinetic equation approach to nonequilibrium pion and sigma meson production in a time-dependent, chiral symmetry breaking field (inertial mechanism). We investigate the question to what extent the low-momentum pion enhancement observed in heavy-ion collisions at CERN - LHC can be addressed within this formalism. In a first step, we consider the inertial mechanism for nonequilibrium production of $σ-$mesons and their simultaneous decay into pion pairs for two cases of $σ$ mass evolution. The resulting pion distribution shows a strong low-momentum enhancement which can be approximated by a thermal Bose distribution with a chemical potential that appears as a trace of the nonequilibrium process of its production.

WKB - type approximations in the theory of vacuum particle creation in strong fields

Within the theory of vacuum creation of an $e^{+}e^{-}$ - plasma in the strong electric fields acting in the focal spot of counter-propagating laser beams we compare predictions on the basis of different WKB-type approximations with results obtained in the framework of a strict kinetic approach. Such a comparison demonstrates a considerable divergence results. We analyse some reasoning for this observation and conclude that WKB-type approximations have an insufficient foundation for QED in strong nonstationary fields. The results obtained in this work on the basis of the kinetic approach are most optimistic for the observation of an $e^{+}e^{-}$ - plasma in the range of optical and x-ray laser facilities. We discuss also the influence of unphysical features of non-adiabatic field models on the reliability of predictions of the kinetic theory.

Properties of the electron-positron plasma created from vacuum in a strong laser field. Quasiparticle excitations

Solutions of a kinetic equation are investigated which describe, on a nonperturbative basis, the vacuum creation of quasiparticle electron-positron pairs due to a strong laser field. The dependence of the quasiparticle electron (positron) distribution function and the particle number density is explored in a wide range of the laser radiation parameters, i.e., the wavelength λand amplitude of electric field strength E_0. Three domains are found: the domain of vacuum polarization effects where the density of the e-e+ pairs is small (the "calm valley"), and two accumulation domains in which the production rate of the e-e+ pairs is strongly increased and the e-e+ pair density can reach a significant value (the short wave length domain and the strong field one). In particular, the obtained results point to a complicated short-distance electromagnetic structure of the physical vacuum in the domain of short wavelengths λ\lessim λ_{acc} = π/m. For moderately strong fields E_0 \lesssim E_c=m^2/e, the accumulation regime can be realized where a plasma with a high density of e-e+ quasiparticles can be achieved. In this domain of the field strengths and in the whole investigated range of wavelengths, an observation of the dynamical Schwinger effect can be facilitated.

Influence of Laser Pulse Parameters on the Properties of e-e+ Plasmas Created from Vacuum

We use the low density approximation within the kinetic theory approach to vacuum creation of an e-e+ pair plasma (EPPP) in a strong laser field in order to investigate the dependence of the observed EPPP on the form and parameters of a single laser pulse. The EPPP distribution function is calculated for an arbitrary time dependence of the electric field in the multiphoton domain (adiabaticity parameter gamma >> 1). The dependence on the field strength, the form and spectrum of the field pulse is investigated on the basis both analytical and numerical methods. The obtained results can be useful for examining some observable secondary processes associated with the dynamical Schwinger effect.

Photon cluster excitation mechanism in an e-e+ plasma created from vacuum by a strong electromagnetic field

In the low density approximation of nonperturbative kinetic theory we investigate the vacuum creation of an electron-positron plasma (EPP) under the action of an external monochromatic "laser" electric field with the focus on multiphoton processes. We analyse in some detail the role of the photon cluster mechanism of EPP excitation and show that this mechanism plays the dominating role in the case when a large photon number from the external field reservoir takes part in the breakdown of the energy gap. We obtain the distribution function in this approximation and discuss its properties.

BBGKY kinetic approach for an e-e+gamma plasma created from the vacuum in a strong laser-generated electric field: The one-photon annihilation channel

In the present work a closed system of kinetic equations is obtained from the truncation of the BBGKY hierarchy for the description of the vacuum creation of an electron - positron plasma and secondary photons due to a strong laser field. This truncation is performed in the Markovian approximation for the one-photon annihilation channel which is accessible due to the presence of the strong external field. Estimates of the photon production rate are obtained for different domains of laser field parameters (frequency nu and field strength E). A huge quantity of optical photons of the quasiclassical laser field is necessary to satisfy the conservation laws of energy and momentum of the constituents (e-, e+, gamma) in this channel. Since the number of these optical photons corresponds to the order of perturbation theory, a vanishingly small photon production rate results for the optical region and strongly subcritical fields E << E_c. In the gamma-ray region nu <~ m the required number of laser photons is small and the production rate of photons from the one-photon annihilation process becomes accessible to observations for subcritical fields E <~ E_c. In the infrared region the photon distribution has a 1/k spectrum typical for flicker noise.

Investigating the one-photon annihilation channel in an e-e+ plasma created from vacuum in strong laser fields

It is well known that in the presence of strong external electromagnetic fields many processes forbidden in standard QED become possible. One example is the one-photon annihilation process considered recently by the present authors in the framework of a kinetic approach to the quasiparticle e-e+ gamma plasma created from vacuum in the focal spot of two counter-propagating laser beams. In these works the domain of large values of the adiabaticity parameter gamma >> 1 (corresponding to multiphoton processes) was considered. In the present work we estimate the intensity of the radiation stemming from photon annihilation in the framework of the effective mass model where gamma < 1, corresponding to large electric fields E < E_c=m^2/e and high laser field frequencies (the domain characteristic for X-ray lasers of the next generation). Under such limiting conditions the resulting effect is sufficiently large to be accessible to experimental observation.

A proposal for testing subcritical vacuum pair production with high power lasers

We present a proposal for testing the prediction of non-equilibrium quantum field theory below the Schwinger limit. The proposed experiments should be able to detect a measurable number of gamma rays resulting from the annihilation of pairs in the focal spot of two opposing high intensity laser beams. We discuss the dependence of the expected number of gamma rays with the laser parameters and compare with the estimated background level of gamma hits for realistic laser conditions.

Kinetics of Photon Radiation off an e-e+ Plasma created from the Vacuum in a Strong Laser Field

We consider the one-photon annihilation mechanism in a electron - positron quasiparticle plasma (EPP) created from the vacuum in a strong subcritical laser field due to the dynamical Schwinger mechanism. On the basis of a kinetic theory approach we show that the secondary photons have a radiation spectrum proportional to 1/k (flicker noise). This effect is very small for EPP excitations in the optical spectrum but can reach quite observable values in the gamma - ray region.

On the kinetic equation approach to pair production by time-dependent electric field

We investigate the quantum kinetic approach to pair production from vacuum by time-dependent electric field. Equivalence between this approach and the more familiar S-matrix approach is explicitly established for both scalar and fermion cases. For the particular case of a constant electric field exact solution for kinetic equations is provided and the accuracy of low-density approximation is estimated.

Role of vacuum polarization for the annihilation channel in a strong laser field

We consider vacuum polarization effects in the one-photon annihilation channel within a kinetic description of the e+ e- plasma produced from the vacuum in the focal spot of counter-propagating laser beams. This entails essential changes in the structure of the photon kinetic equation. We investigate the domain of large adiabaticity parameters gamma >> 1 where the photon radiation turns out to be very small. A more thorough examination of the domain gamma < 1 needs separate investigation. However, an exploratory study has shown that the one-photon annihilation channel can lead for some domains of laser field parameters (e.g., for the XFEL) to contributions accessible for observation.

Self - Consistent Description of e+e-gamma Plasma Created from the Vacuum in a Strong Electric Laser Field

In the present work a closed system of kinetic equations is obtained for the description of the vacuum creation of an electron - positron plasma and secondary photons due to a strong laser field. An estimate for the photon energy distribution is obtained. In the Markovian approximation the photon distribution has a 1/k spectrum (flicker noise).

Pair production and optical lasers

Electron-positron pair creation in a standing wave is explored using a parameter-free quantum kinetic equation. Field strengths and frequencies corresponding to modern optical lasers induce a material polarisation of the QED vacuum, which may be characterised as a plasma of e^+ e^- quasiparticle pairs with a density of ~10^{20}cm^{-3}. The plasma vanishes almost completely when the laser field is zero, leaving a very small residual pair density, n_r, which is the true manifestation of vacuum decay. The average pair density per period is proportional to the laser intensity but independent of the frequency, ν. The density of residual pairs also grows with laser intensity but n_r \propto ν^2. With optical lasers at the forefront of the current generation, these dynamical QED vacuum effects may generate 5-10 observable two-photon annihilation events per laser pulse.

Plasma production and thermalisation in a strong field

Aspects of the formation and equilibration of a quark-gluon plasma are explored using a quantum kinetic equation, which involves a non-Markovian, Abelian source term for quark and antiquark production and, for the collision term, a relaxation time approximation that defines a time-dependent quasi-equilibrium temperature and collective velocity. The strong Abelian field is determined via the simultaneous solution of Maxwell's equation. A particular feature of this approach is the appearance of plasma oscillations in all thermodynamic observables. Their presence can lead to a sharp increase in the time-integrated dilepton yield.

A quantum kinetic equation for particle production in the Schwinger mechanism

A quantum kinetic equation is derived for the description of pair production in a time-dependent homogeneous electric field $E(t)$. As a source term, the Schwinger mechanism for particle creation is incorporated. Possible particle production due to collisions and collisional damping are neglected. The main result is a kinetic equation of non-Markovian character. In the low density approximation, the source term is reduced to the leading part of the well known Schwinger formula for the probability of pair creation. We discuss the momentum and time dependence of the derived source term and compare with other approaches.

preprint1998arXiv

Non-Markovian effects in strong-field pair creation

We analyze a quantum kinetic equation describing both boson and fermion pair production and explore analytically and numerically the solution of the non-Markovian kinetic equation. In the Markovian limit of the kinetic equation we find an analytical solution for the single particle distribution function of bosons and fermions. The numerical investigation for a homogeneous, constant electric field shows an enhancement (bosons) or a suppression (fermions) of the pair creation rate according to the symmetry character of the produced particles. For strong fields non-Markovian effects are important while they disappear for weak fields. Hence it is sufficient to apply the low density limit for weak fields but necessary to take into account memory effects for strong fields.

Relativistic quantum kinetic equation of the Vlasov type for systems with internal degrees of freedom

We present an approach to derive a relativistic kinetic equation of the Vlasov type. Our approach is especially reliable for the description of quantum field systems with many internal degrees of freedom. The method is based on the Heisenberg picture and leads to a kinetic equation which fulfills the conservation laws. We apply the approach to the standard Walecka Lagrangian and an effective chiral Lagrangian.

Dissipative Processes in an Expanding Massive Gluon Gas

The temperature dependence of the kinetic coefficients is obtained in the non-perturbative region with the help of Green-Kubo-type formulae in the model of massive gluon gas motivated by numerical results from simulations of lattice QCD. The entropy production rate is estimated using scaling hydrodynamics. It is shown that the increase in the viscosity coefficients leads to entropy generation in heavy ion collision processes which could be big, especially for temperatures close to the critical one.
