Optical and X-ray observations of stellar flares on an active M dwarf AD Leonis with Seimei Telescope, SCAT, NICER and OISTER

We report multi-wavelength monitoring observations of an M-dwarf flare star AD Leonis with Seimei Telescope (6150--7930 Å), SCAT (Spectroscopic Chuo-university Astronomical Telescope; 3700--7500 Å), NICER (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer; 0.2--12.0 keV), and collaborations of OISTER (Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research) program. Twelve flares are detected in total which include ten Hαα, four X-ray, and four optical-continuum flares; one of them is a superflare with the total energy of ∼\sim 2.0×\times1033^{33} erg. We found that (1) during the superflare, the Hαα emission line full width at 1/8 maximum dramatically increases to 14 Å from 8 Å in the low-resolution spectra (R∼\sim 2000) accompanied with the large white-light flares, (2) some weak Hαα/X-ray flares are not accompanied with white-light emissions, and (3) the non-flaring emissions show clear rotational modulations in X-ray and Hαα intensity in the same phase. To understand these observational features, one-dimensional hydrodynamic flare simulations are performed by using the RADYN code. As a result of simulations, we found the simulated Hαα line profiles with hard and high-energy non-thermal electron beams are consistent with that of the initial phase line profiles of the superflares, while those with more soft- and/or weak-energy beam are consistent with those in decay phases, indicating the changes in the energy fluxes injected to the lower atmosphere. Also, we found that the relation between optical continuum and Hαα intensity is nonlinear, which can be one cause of the non-white-light flares. The flare energy budget exhibits diversity in the observations and models, and more observations of stellar flares are necessary for constraining the occurrence of various emission line phenomena in stellar flares.

General Formalism for Magnetic Anisotropy Constants

Direct expressions for the magnetic anisotropy constants are given at a finite temperature from microscopic viewpoints. In the present derivation, it is assumed that the Hamiltonian is a linear function with respect to the magnetization direction. We discuss in detail the first-order constant K1K_1 and show that the results reproduce previous results. We also apply our method to Nd2_2Fe14_{14}B compounds and demonstrate that the temperature dependencies of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants K1K_1, K2K_2, and K3K_3 are successfully computed.

Theoretical evaluation on the temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropy constants of Nd2Fe14B - Effects of exchange field and crystal field strength -

To identify the possible mechanism of coercivity (Hc) degradation of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets, we study the roles of the exchange field acting on the 4f electrons in Nd ions and theoretically investigate how the variation of the exchange field affects the values of the magnetic anisotropy constants K1 and K2. We find that, with decreasing exchange field strength, both values decrease as a result of the lower asphericity of the 4f electron cloud, indicating that the local anisotropy constants might become small around the grain boundaries where the exchange fields are decreased owing to the smaller coordination number.

Novel weak-ferromagnetic metallic state in heavily doped Ba1−x_{1-x}Kx_{x}Mn2_{2}As2_{2}

Heavily doped Ba1−x_{1-x}Kx_{x}Mn2_{2}As2_{2} (xx=0.19 and 0.26) single crystals were successfully grown, and investigated by the measurements of resistivity and anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic insulating ground state of the undoped BaMn2_{2}As2_{2}, the K-doped crystals show metallic conduction with weak ferromagnetism below ∼\sim50 K and Curie-Weiss-like in-plane magnetic susceptibility above ∼\sim50 K. Under high pressures up to 6 GPa, the low-temperature metallicity changes into a state characterized by a Kondo-like resistivity minimum without any signature of superconductivity above 2.5 K. Electronic structure calculations for xx=0.25 using 2×2×12\times2\times1 supercell reproduce the hole-doped metallic state. The density of states at Fermi energy have significant As 4pp components, suggesting that the 4pp holes are mainly responsible for the metallic conduction. Our results suggest that the interplay between itinerant 4pp holes and local 3dd moments is mostly responsible for the novel metallic state.
