On possible origins of trends in financial market price changes

We investigate possible origins of trends using a deterministic threshold model, where we refer to long-term variabilities of price changes (price movements) in financial markets as trends. From the investigation we find two phenomena. One is that the trend of monotonic increase and decrease can be generated by dealers' minuscule change in mood, which corresponds to the possible fundamentals. The other is that the emergence of trends is all but inevitable in the realistic situation because of the fact that dealers cannot always obtain accurate information about deals, even if there is no influence from fundamentals and technical analyses.

Effect of Elastic Vibrations on Normal Head on Collisions of Isothermal Spheres

We numerically investigate head on collisions of isothermal visco-elastic spheres. We find that the restitution coefficient oscillates against the impact speed if the solid viscosity inside the sphere is small enough. We confirm that the oscillation arises from the resonance between the duration of contact and the eigen-frequencies of the sphere. This oscillation disappears if there exists the strong solid viscosity in spheres. We also find that a sinusoidal behavior of the restitution coefficient against the initial phase in the eigenmodes for collisions between a thermally activated sphere and a flat wall. As a result, the restitution coefficient can exceed unity if the impact speed of the colliding sphere is nearly equal to or slower than the thermal speed. We have confirmed the existence of the fluctuation theorem for impact processes through our simulation.

Spin Dependent Collision of Ultracold Metastable Atoms

Spin-polarized metastable atoms of ultracold ytterbium are trapped at high density and their inelastic collisional properties are measured. We reveal that in collisions of Yb(3P2) with Yb(1S0) there is relatively weak inelastic loss, but with a significant spin-dependence consistent with Zeeman sublevel changes as being the dominant decay process. This is in strong contrast to our observations of Yb(3P2)-Yb(3P2) collisional loss, which are, at low field, much more rapid and have essentially no spin dependence. Our results give a guideline to use the 3P2 states in many possible applications.

Realization of SU(2)*SU(6) Fermi System

We report the realization of a novel degenerate Fermi mixture with an SU(2)*SU(6) symmetry in a cold atomic gas. We successfully cool the mixture of the two fermionic isotopes of ytterbium 171Yb with the nuclear spin I=1/2 and 173Yb with I=5/2 below the Fermi temperature T_ F as 0.46T_F for 171Yb and 0.54T_F for 173Yb. The same scattering lengths for different spin components make this mixture featured with the novel SU(2)*SU(6) symmetry. The nuclear spin components are separately imaged by exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach effect. In addition, the mixture is loaded into a 3D optical lattice to implement the SU(2)*SU(6) Hubbard model. This mixture will open the door to the study of novel quantum phases such as a spinor Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like fermionic superfluid.
