A note on invertible quadratic transformations of the real plane

A polynomial transformation of the real plane $\Bbb R^2$ is a mapping $\Bbb R^2\to\Bbb R^2$ given by two polynomials of two variables. Such a transformation is called quadratic if the degrees of its polynomials are not greater than two. In the present paper an exhaustive description of invertible quadratic transformations of the real plane is given. Their application to the perfect cuboid problem is discussed.

A rough classification of potentially invertible cubic transformations of the real plane

A polynomial transformation of the real plane $\Bbb R^2$ is a mapping $\Bbb R^2\to\Bbb R^2$ given by two polynomials of two variables. Such a transformation is called cubic if the degrees of its polynomials are not greater than three. In the present paper a rough classification scheme for cubic transformations of $\Bbb R^2$ is suggested. It is based on quartic forms associated with these transformations.

Asymptotic estimates for roots of the cuboid characteristic equation in the linear region

A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges, whose face diagonals, and whose space diagonal are of integer lengths. The second cuboid conjecture specifies a subclass of perfect cuboids described by one Diophantine equation of tenth degree and claims their non-existence within this subclass. This Diophantine equation is called the cuboid characteristic equation. It has two parameters. The linear region is a domain on the coordinate plane of these two parameters given by certain linear inequalities. In the present paper asymptotic expansions and estimates for roots of the characteristic equation are obtained in the case where both parameters tend to infinity staying within the linear region. Their applications to the cuboid problem are discussed.

Asymptotic estimates for roots of the cuboid characteristic equation in the nonlinear region

A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped. Its edges, its face diagonals, and its space diagonal are of integer lengths. None of such cuboids is known thus far, though the system of Diophantine equations describing them is easily written. The cuboid characteristic equation is a twelfth degree Diophantine equation derived from the initial cuboid equations and equivalent to them. In the case of the second cuboid conjecture it reduces to a tenth degree equation. This equation comprises two parameters. Previously various asymptotics for roots of this equation were studied as its parameters tend to infinity either separately or simultaneously provided some linear combination of them is preserved finite. In the present paper this linear combination is replaced by a certain nonlinear expression.

Multiple discriminants and critical values of a multivariate polynomial

A critical value of a function is the value of this function at one of its critical points. Each critical point of a differentiable multivariate function is described by the equations which consist in equating to zero all of its partial derivatives. However, in general case there is no equation for the corresponding critical value. The case of polynomials is different. In the present paper an equation for critical values of a polynomial is derived.

On quartic forms associated with cubic transformations of the real plane

A polynomial transformation of the real plane $\Bbb R^2$ is a mapping $\Bbb R^2\to\Bbb R^2$ given by two polynomials of two variables. Such a transformation is called cubic if the degrees of its polynomials are not greater than three. It turns out that cubic transformations are associated with some binary and quaternary quartic forms. In the present paper these forms are defined and studied.

On some higher degree sign-definite multivariate polynomials associated with definite quadratic forms

Positive and negative quadratic forms are well known and widely used. They are multivariate homogeneous polynomials of degree two taking positive or negative values respectively for any values of their arguments not all zero. In the present paper a certain higher degree polynomial is associated with each quadratic form such that the form is definite if and only if this polynomial is sign-definite.

Reverse asymptotic estimates for roots of the cuboid characteristic equation in the case of the second cuboid conjecture

This Diophantine equation has two parameters. Previously asymptotic expansions and estimates for roots of this equation were obtained in the case where the first parameter is fixed and the other tends to infinity. In the present paper reverse asymptotic expansions and estimates are derived in the case where the second parameter is fixed and the first one tends to infinity. Their application to the perfect cuboid problem is discussed.

A model with two quantum particles similar to the hydrogen atom

The hydrogen atom with the Coulomb interaction is one of the exactly solvable non-relativistic quantum models. Unlike many other exactly solvable models it describes a real physical object providing the formulas for energy levels and stationary state wave functions of a real hydrogen atom. In this paper we modify the model replacing the Coulomb interaction by the interaction of the proton and the electron with the classical electromagnetic field serving as an intermediary transmitting the electromagnetic interaction of these two charged quantum particles.

Course of analytical geometry

This book is a regular textbook of analytical geometry covering vector algebra and its applications to describing straight lines, planes, and quadrics in two and three dimensions. The stress is made on vector algebra by using skew-angular coordinates and by introducing some notations and prerequisites for understanding tensors. The book is addressed to students specializing in mathematics, physics, engineering, and technologies and to students of other specialities where educational standards require learning this subject.

Model composition through model reduction: a combined model of CD95 and NF-κB signaling pathways

We propose a new approach to model composition, based on reducing several models to the same level of complexity and subsequent combining them together. Firstly, we suggest a set of model reduction tools that can be systematically applied to a given model. Secondly, we suggest a notion of a minimal complexity model. This model is the simplest one that can be obtained from the original model using these tools and still able to approximate experimental data. Thirdly, we propose a strategy for composing the reduced models together. Connection with the detailed model is preserved, which can be advantageous in some applications. A toolbox for model reduction and composition has been implemented as part of the BioUML software and tested on the example of integrating two previously published models of the CD95 (APO-1/Fas) signaling pathways. We show that the reduced models lead to the same dynamical behavior of observable species and the same predictions as in the precursor models. The composite model is able to recapitulate several experimental datasets which were used by the authors of the original models to calibrate them separately, but also has new dynamical properties.

Two and three descent for elliptic curves associated with perfect cuboids

A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Recently it was shown that the Diophantine equations describing such a cuboid lead to a couple of parametric families of elliptic curves. Two and three descent methods for calculating their ranks are discussed in the present paper. The elliptic curves in each parametric family are subdivided into two subsets admitting 2-descent and 3-descent methods respectively.

A biquadratic Diophantine equation associated with perfect cuboids

A perfect Euler cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals whose space diagonal is also integer. Such cuboids are not yet discovered and their non-existence is also not proved. Perfect Euler cuboids are described by a system of four Diophantine equation possessing a natural $S_3$ symmetry. Recently these equations were factorized with respect to this $S_3$ symmetry and the factor equations were derived. In the present paper the factor equations are transformed to $E$-form and then reduced to a single biquadratic equation.

A note on rational and elliptic curves associated with the cuboid factor equations

A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. It is described by a system of four equations with respect to six variables. The cuboid factor equations were derived from these four equations by symmetrization procedure. They constitute a system of eight polynomial equations, which has been solved parametrically. In the present paper its parametric solution is expressed through intersections or rational and elliptic curves arranged into parametric families.

A note on solutions of the cuboid factor equations

A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. It is described by a system of four quadratic equations with respect to six variables. The cuboid factor equations were derived from these four equations by symmetrization procedure. They constitute a system of eight polynomial equations. Recently two sets of formulas were derived providing two solutions for the cuboid factor equations. These two solutions are studied in the present paper. They are proved to coincide with each other up to a change of parameters in them.

A note on the second cuboid conjecture. Part I

The problem of finding perfect Euler cuboids or proving their non-existence is an old unsolved problem in mathematics. The second cuboid conjecture is one of the three propositions suggested as intermediate stages in proving the non-existence of perfect Euler cuboids. It is associated with a certain polynomial Diophantine equation of the order 10. In this paper a structural theorem for the solutions of this Diophantine equation is proved and some examples of its application are considered.

A note on the third cuboid conjecture. Part I

The problem of finding perfect Euler cuboids or proving their non-existence is an old unsolved problem in mathematics. The third cuboid conjecture is the last of the three propositions suggested as intermediate stages in proving the non-existence of perfect Euler cuboids. It is associated with a certain Diophantine equation of the order 12. In this paper a structural theorem for the solutions of this Diophantine equation is proved.

Inverse problems associated with perfect cuboids

A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges, integer face diagonals, and integer space diagonal. Such cuboids have not yet been found, but nor has their existence been disproved. Perfect cuboids are described by a certain system of Diophantine equations possessing an intrinsic $S_3$ symmetry. Recently these equations were factorized with respect to this $S_3$ symmetry and the factor equations were transformed into $E$-form. As appears, the transformed factor equations are explicitly solvable. Based on this solution, polynomial inverse problems are formulated in the present paper.

On a pair of cubic equations associated with perfect cuboids

A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals whose space diagonal is also integer. The existence of such cuboids is neither proved, nor disproved. A rational perfect cuboid is a natural companion of a perfect cuboid absolutely equivalent to the latter one. Its edges and face diagonals are rational numbers, while its space diagonal is equal to unity. Recently, based on a symmetry reduction, it was shown that edges of a rational perfect cuboid are roots of a certain cubic equation with rational coefficients depending on two rational parameters. Face diagonals of this cuboid are roots of another cubic equation whose coefficients are rational numbers depending on the same two rational parameters. In the present paper these two cubic equations are studied for reducibility. Six special cases of their reducibility over the field of rational numbers are found.

On an ideal of multisymmetric polynomials associated with perfect cuboids

A perfect Euler cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges, with integer face diagonals, and with integer space diagonal as well. Finding such parallelepipeds or proving their non-existence is an old unsolved mathematical problem. Algebraically the problem is described by a system of Diophantine equations. Symmetry approach to the cuboid problem is based on the natural $S_3$ symmetry of its Diophantine equations. Factorizing these equations with respect to their $S_3$ symmetry, one gets some certain ideal within the ring of multisymmetric polynomials. In the present paper this ideal is completely calculated and presented through its basis.

On singularities of the inverse problems associated with perfect cuboids

Two cubic equations and three auxiliary equations for edges and face diagonals of a rational perfect cuboid have been recently derived. They constitute a background for two inverse problems. The coefficients of cubic equations and the right hand sides of auxiliary equations are rational functions of two rational parameters, i. e. they have denominators. Hence the inverse problems have singular points. These singular points are studied in the present paper.

On the equivalence of cuboid equations and their factor equations

An Euler cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals. An Euler cuboid is called perfect if its space diagonal is also integer. Some Euler cuboids are already discovered. As for perfect cuboids, none of them is currently known and their non-existence is not yet proved. Euler cuboids and perfect cuboids are described by certain systems of Diophantine equations. These equations possess an intrinsic $S_3$ symmetry. Recently they were factorized with respect to this $S_3$ symmetry and the factor equations were derived. In the present paper the factor equations are shown to be equivalent to the original cuboid equations regarding the search for perfect cuboids and in selecting Euler cuboids.

On two algebraic parametrizations for rational solutions of the cuboid equations

A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Its existence is equivalent to the existence of a perfect cuboid with all integer edges and diagonals. Finding such a cuboid or proving its non-existence is an old unsolved problem. Recently, based on a symmetry approach, the equations of a perfect cuboid were transformed to factor equations. The factor equations turned out to be solvable and, being solved, have led to a pair of inverse problems. Our efforts in the present paper are toward solving these inverse problems. Algebraic parametrizations for their solutions using algebraic functions of two rational arguments are found.

On two elliptic curves associated with perfect cuboids

A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Finding such a cuboid is equivalent to finding a perfect cuboid with all integer edges and diagonals, which is an old unsolved problem. Recently, based on a symmetry approach, it was shown that edges and face diagonals of rational perfect cuboid are roots of two cubic equations whose coefficients depend on two rational parameters. Six special cases where these cubic equations are reducible have been already found. Two more possible cases of reducibility for these cubic equations are considered in the present paper. They lead to a pair of elliptic curves.

Perfect cuboids and multisymmetric polynomials

A perfect Euler cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals whose space diagonal is also integer. The problem of finding such parallelepipeds or proving their non-existence is an old unsolved mathematical problem. The Diophantine equations of a perfect Euler cuboid have an explicit $S_3$ symmetry. In this paper the cuboid equations are factorized with respect to their $S_3$ symmetry in terms of multisymmetric polynomials. Some factor equations are calculated explicitly.

Perfect cuboids and irreducible polynomials

The problem of constructing a perfect cuboid is related to a certain class of univariate polynomials with three integer parameters $a$, $b$, and $u$. Their irreducibility over the ring of integers under certain restrictions for $a$, $b$, and $u$ would mean the non-existence of perfect cuboids. This irreducibility is conjectured and then verified numerically for approximately 10000 instances of $a$, $b$, and $u$.

A counterexample to Khabibullin's conjecture for integral inequalities

Khabibullin's conjecture for integral inequalities has two numeric parameters $n$ and $α$ in its statement, $n$ being a positive integer and $α$ being a positive real number. This conjecture is already proved in the case where $n>0$ and $0<α\leq 1/2$. However, for $α>1/2$ it is not always valid. In this paper a counterexample is constructed for $n=2$ and $α=2$. Then Khabibullin's conjecture is reformulated in a way suitable for all $α>0$.

Direct and inverse conversion formulas associated with Khabibullin's conjecture for integral inequalities

Khabibullin's conjecture deals with two linear integral inequalities for some non-negative continuous function $q(t)$. The integral in the first of these two inequalities converts $q(t)$ into another function of one variable $g(t)$. This integral yields the direct conversion formula. An inverse conversion formula means a formula expressing $q(t)$ back through $g(t)$. Such an inverse conversion formula is derived.
