Fixing a Parameter of the Galactic Halo: A Mathematical Modelling by Hamiltonian Method

We illustrate how the mathematical modelling of the equations of motion in terms of autonomous Hamiltonian dynamical system can definitively fix a sign for an otherwise indefinite sign of a certain astrophysical parameter. To illustrate it, we shall consider the Mannheim-Kazanas-de Sitter solution of Weyl gravity containing the parameter γ, which is believed to be significant in the halo gravity. The strategy we adopt is to calculate the maximum radius up to which the halo supports stable material circular orbits. The maximum radius for several observed lenses are calculated for both signs of γ, and with the observed value of cosmological constant Λ. These lenses (all having approximately the Einstein radius R_{E}{\approx}10^23 cm) consistently yield a maximum radius R_{max}^{stable}({\simeq}4.25{\times}10^27 cm) inside the de Sitter radius of the universe only when γ is negative, while a positive γ yields R_{max}^{stable} always exceeding the de Sitter radius.

Light bending in the galactic halo by Rindler-Ishak method

After the work of Rindler and Ishak, it is now well established that the bending of light is influenced by the cosmological constant Λ appearing in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. We show that their method, when applied to the galactic halo gravity parametrized by a constant γ, yields exactly the same γ- correction to Schwarzschild bending as obtained by standard methods. Different cases are analyzed, which include some corrections to the special cases considered in the original paper by Rindler and Ishak.

Upper Limit on the Size of Galactic Halo via Hamiltonian Approach

Using the approach of autonomous Hamiltonian dynamical system, we attempt to estimate the as yet unknown upper limit on the size of the galactic halo surrounding galaxies (lenses). The key to determine the size of the halo is to determine the maximum radius up to which stable material circular orbits are admissible. We shall illustrate the approach by considering a solution of the Weyl gravity containing a halo parameter $γ$. The upper limit for several observed lenses are calculated for a typical value of $gamma$ for definiteness, with and without the cosmological constant $Λ$. These lenses (all having Einstein radius $R_{\text{E}}\approx 10^{23}$ cm) consistently yield an upper limit $R_{\text{max}}^{\text{stable}}$($\simeq 4.25\times 10^{27}$ cm) inside the de Sitter radius only when $γ$ is \textit{negative}, while a positive $γ$ yields $R_{\text{max}}^{\text{% stable}}$ always exceeding the de Sitter radius.
