On Stable Long-Form Generation: Benchmarking and Mitigating Length Volatility

Large Language Models (LLMs) excel at long-context understanding but exhibit significant limitations in long-form generation. Existing studies primarily focus on single-generation quality, generally overlooking the volatility of the output. This volatility not only leads to significant computational costs but also severely impacts the models' reliable application. To address this gap, our work unfolds in three stages: benchmarking, probing, and mitigation. We first propose the VOlatility in Long-form Text Benchmark (VOLTBench), a novel heterogeneous-task benchmark designed to systematically quantify the length volatility of long-form generation. Subsequently, by analyzing attention traces, we conduct an in-depth probe to identify several common internal patterns that cause this volatility. Finally, to mitigate long-form output volatility, we propose Stable Generation via Logits Boosting (GLoBo), a lightweight decoding-stage optimization strategy, designed to significantly enhance both the length accuracy and stability of long-form generation without additional training. Extensive experiments on VOLTBench provide the first systematic confirmation of severe long-form output instability in mainstream models and validate that our proposed method successfully improves the mean output length of the base model by 148% and reduces the length volatility by 69%, while maintaining high generation quality.

State space partitioning based on constrained spectral clustering for block particle filtering

The particle filter (PF) is a powerful inference tool widely used to estimate the filtering distribution in non-linear and/or non-Gaussian problems. To overcome the curse of dimensionality of PF, the block PF (BPF) inserts a blocking step to partition the state space into several subspaces or blocks of smaller dimension so that the correction and resampling steps can be performed independently on each subspace. Using blocks of small size reduces the variance of the filtering distribution estimate, but in turn the correlation between blocks is broken and a bias is introduced. When the dependence relationships between state variables are unknown, it is not obvious to decide how to split the state space into blocks and a significant error overhead may arise from a poor choice of partitioning. In this paper, we formulate the partitioning problem in the BPF as a clustering problem and we propose a state space partitioning method based on spectral clustering (SC). We design a generalized BPF algorithm that contains two new steps: (i) estimation of the state vector correlation matrix from predicted particles, (ii) SC using this estimate as the similarity matrix to determine an appropriate partition. In addition, a constraint is imposed on the maximal cluster size to prevent SC from providing too large blocks. We show that the proposed method can bring together in the same blocks the most correlated state variables while successfully escaping the curse of dimensionality.

Joint Channel Estimation and Data Detection for Multihop OFDM Relaying System under Unknown Channel Orders and Doppler Frequencies

In this paper, channel estimation and data detection for multihop relaying orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is investigated under time-varying channel. Different from previous works, which highly depend on the statistical information of the doubly-selective channel (DSC) and noise to deliver accurate channel estimation and data detection results, we focus on more practical scenarios with unknown channel orders and Doppler frequencies. Firstly, we integrate the multilink, multihop channel matrices into one composite channel matrix. Then, we formulate the unknown channel using generalized complex exponential basis expansion model (GCE-BEM) with a large oversampling factor to introduce channel sparsity on delay-Doppler domain. To enable the identification of nonzero entries, sparsity enhancing Gaussian distributions with Gamma hyperpriors are adopted. An iterative algorithm is developed under variational inference (VI) framework. The proposed algorithm iteratively estimate the channel, recover the unknown data using Viterbi algorithm and learn the channel and noise statistical information, using only limited number of pilot subcarrier in one OFDM symbol. Simulation results show that, without any statistical information, the performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to that of the optimal channel estimation and data detection algorithm, which requires specific information on system structure, channel tap positions, channel lengths, Doppler shifts as well as noise powers.
