Photon indistinguishability measurements under pulsed and continuous excitation

The indistinguishability of successively generated photons from a single quantum emitter is most commonly measured using two-photon interference at a beam splitter. Whilst for sources excited in the pulsed regime the measured bunching of photons reflects the full wavepacket indistinguishability of the emitted photons, for continuous wave (cw) excitation the inevitable dependence on detector timing resolution and driving strength obscures the underlying photon interference process. Here we derive a method to extract the photon indistinguishability from cw measurements by considering the relevant correlation functions. The equivalence of both methods is experimentally verified through comparison of cw and pulsed excitation of an archetypal source of photons, a single molecule.

Polymer-encapsulated organic nanocrystals for single photon emission

We demonstrate an emulsion-polymerisation technique to embed dibenzoterrylene-doped anthracene nanocrystals in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) nanocapsules. The nanocapsules require no further protection after fabrication and are resistant to sublimation compared to unprotected anthracene. The room temperature emission from single dibenzoterrylene molecules is stable and when cooled to cryogenic temperatures we see no change in their excellent optical properties compared to existing growth methods. These now robust nanocapsules have potential for surface functionalisation and integration into nanophotonic devices, where the materials used are compatible with incorporation in polymer-based designs.

All-fibre multiplexed source of high-purity heralded single photons

Single photon sources based on spontaneous photon-pair generation have enabled pioneering experiments in quantum optics. However, their non-determinism presents a bottleneck to scaling up photonic and hybrid quantum-enhanced technologies. Furthermore, photon pairs are typically emitted into many correlated frequency modes, producing an undesirable mixed state on heralding. Here we present a complete fibre-integrated heralded single photon source that addresses both these difficulties simultaneously. We use active switching to provide a path to deterministic operation by multiplexing separate spontaneous sources, and dispersion engineering to minimise frequency correlation for high-purity single photon generation. All the essential elements -- nonlinear material with dispersion control, wavelength isolation, optical delay, and fast switching -- are incorporated in a low-loss alignment-free package that heralds photons in telecoms single-mode fibre. Our results demonstrate a scalable approach to delivering pure single photons directly into guided-wave photonic devices.
