Loci of Poncelet Triangles in the General Closure Case

We analyze loci of triangle centers over variants of two-well known triangle porisms: the bicentric and confocal families. Specifically, we evoke the general version of Poncelet's closure theorem whereby individual sides can be made tangent to separate in-pencil caustics. We show that despite the more complicated dynamic geometry, the locus of certain triangle centers and associated points remain conics and/or circles.

Average Elliptic Billiard Invariants with Spatial Integrals

We compare invariants of N-periodic trajectories in the elliptic billiard, classic and new, to their aperiodic counterparts via a spatial integrals evaluated over the boundary of the elliptic billiard. The integrand is weighed by a universal measure equal to the density of rays hitting a given boundary point. We find that aperiodic averages are smooth and monotonic on caustic eccentricity, and perfectly match N-periodic average invariants at the discrete caustic parameters which admit a given N-periodic family.

Invariants of Self-Intersected N-Periodics in the Elliptic Billiard

We study self-intersected N-periodics in the elliptic billiard, describing new facts about their geometry (e.g., self-intersected 4-periodics have vertices concyclic with the foci). We also check if some invariants listed in "Eighty New Invariants of N-Periodics in the Elliptic Billiard" (2020), arXiv:2004.12497, remain invariant in the self-intersected case. Toward that end, we derive explicit expressions for many low-N simple and self-intersected cases. We identify two special cases (one simple, one self-intersected) where a quantity prescribed to be invariant is actually variable.

Area-Invariant Pedal-Like Curves Derived from the Ellipse

We study six pedal-like curves associated with the ellipse which are area-invariant for pedal points lying on one of two shapes: (i) a circle concentric with the ellipse, or (ii) the ellipse boundary itself. Case (i) is a corollary to properties of the Curvature Centroid (Krümmungs-Schwerpunkt) of a curve, proved by Steiner in 1825. For case (ii) we prove area invariance algebraically. Explicit expressions for all invariant areas are also provided.

Related by Similarity II: Poncelet 3-Periodics in the Homothetic Pair and the Brocard Porism

Previously we showed the family of 3-periodics in the elliptic billiard (confocal pair) is the image under a variable similarity transform of poristic triangles (those with non-concentric, fixed incircle and circumcircle). Both families conserve the ratio of inradius to circumradius and therefore also the sum of cosines. This is consisten with the fact that a similarity preserves angles. Here we study two new Poncelet 3-periodic families also tied to each other via a variable similarity: (i) a first one interscribed in a pair of concentric, homothetic ellipses, and (ii) a second non-concentric one known as the Brocard porism: fixed circumcircle and Brocard inellipse. The Brocard points of this family are stationary at the foci of the inellipse. A key common invariant is the Brocard angle, and therefore the sum of cotangents. This raises an interesting question: given a non-concentric Poncelet family (limited or not to the outer conic being a circle), can a similar doppelgänger always be found interscribed in a concentric, axis-aligned ellipse and/or conic pair?

Affine curvature lines of surfaces in 3-space

In this work we study the affine principal lines of surfaces in 3-space. We consider the binary differential equation of the affine curvature lines and obtain the topological models of these curves near the affine umbilic points (elliptic and hyperbolic). We also describe the generic behavior of affine curvature lines in the neighborhood of points with double eigenvalues (but not umbilics) of the affine shape operator and parabolic points

Lines of Curvature on Quadric Hypersurfaces of $ \mathbb{R}^4$

Here are described the geometric structures of the lines of principal curvature and the partially umbilic singularities of the tridimensional non compact generic quadric hypersurfaces of ${\mathbb R}^4$. This includes the ellipsoidal hyperboloids of one and two sheets and the toroidal hyperboloids. The present study complements the analysis of the compact ellipsoidal hypersurfaces carried out by D. Lopes, R. Garcia and J. Sotomayor.

Partially umbilic singularities of hypersurfaces of $\mathbb R^4$

This paper establishes the geometric structure of the lines of principal curvature of a hypersurface immersed in ${\mathbb R}^4$ in a neighborhood of the set $\mathcal{S}$ of its principal curvature singularities, consisting of the points at which atF least two principal curvatures are equal. Under generic conditions defined by appropriate transversality hypotheses it is proved that $\mathcal{S}$ is the union of regular smooth curves $\mathcal{S}_{12}$ and $\mathcal{S}_{23}$, consisting of partially umbilic points, where only two principal curvatures coincide. This curve is partitioned into regular arcs consisting of points of Darbouxian types $D_1,\; D_2,\; D_3$, with common boundary at isolated semi-Darbouxian transition points of types $ D_{12}$ and $D_{23}$. The stratified structure of the partially umbilic separatrix surfaces, consisting of the boundary of the set of points through which the principal lines approach $\mathcal S$, established in this work, extends to hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb R}^4$ the results of Darboux for umbilic points on analytic surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$, reformulated by Gutierrez and Sotomayor, to describe the umbilic separatrix structures of the umbilic types $D_1,\; D_2,\; D_3$, and further developed by Garcia, Gutierrez and Sotomayor, for their $ D_{12}$ and $D_{23}$ generic bifurcations. This work complements results of Garcia on the structure of principal curvature lines around the generic partially umbilic points of hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb R}^4$.

Axiumbilic Singular Points on Surfaces Immersed in R4 and their Generic Bifurcations

Here are described the axiumbilic points that appear in generic one parameter families of surfaces immersed in R4. At these points the ellipse of curvature of the immersion, Little, Garcia - Sotomayor has equal axes. A review is made on the basic preliminaries on axial curvature lines and the associated axiumbilic points which are the singularities of the fields of principal, mean axial lines}, axial crossings and the quartic differential equation defining them. The Lie-Cartan vector field suspension of the quartic differential equation, giving a line field tangent to the Lie-Cartan surface (in the projective bundle of the source immersed surface which quadruply covers a punctured neighborhood of the axiumbilic point) whose integral curves project regularly on the lines of axial curvature. In an appropriate Monge chart the configurations of the generic axiumbilic points, denoted by E3, E4 and E5, are obtained by studying the integral curves of the Lie-Cartan vector field. Elementary bifurcation theory is applied to the study of the transition and elimination between the axiumbilic generic points. The two generic patterns E^1_{34} and E^1_{45} are analysed and their axial configurations are explained in terms of their qualitative changes (bifurcations) with one parameter in the space of immersions, focusing on their close analogy with the saddle-node bifurcation for vector fields in the plane . This work can be regarded as a partial extension to R4 of the umbilic bifurcations in Garcia - Gutierrez - Sotomayor for surfaces in R3. With less restrictive differentiability hypotheses and distinct methodology it has points of contact with the results of Gutierrez - Guinez - Castaneda.

Lines of axial curvature at critical points on surfaces mapped into R4

In this paper are studied the simplest patterns of axial curvature lines (along which the normal curvature vector is at a vertex of the ellipse of curvature) near a critical point of a surface mapped into R4. These critical points, where the rank of the mapping drops from 2 to 1, occur isolated in generic one parameter families of mappings of surfaces into R4. As the parameter crosses a critical bifurcation value, at which the mapping has a critical point, it is described how the axial umbilic points, which are the singularities of the axial curvature configurations at regular points, move along smooth arcs to reach the critical point. The numbers of such arcs and their axial umbilic types are fully described for a typical family of mappings with a critical point.

Lines of Principal Curvature near Singular End Points of Surfaces in R3

In this paper are studied the nets of principal curvature lines on surfaces embedded in Euclidean $3-$space near their end points, at which the surfaces tend to infinity. This is a natural complement and extension to smooth surfaces of the work of Garcia and Sotomayor (1996), devoted to the study of principal curvature nets which are structurally stable -- do not change topologically-- under small perturbations on the coefficients of the equations defining algebraic surfaces. This paper goes one step further and classifies the patterns of the most common and stable behaviors at the ends, present also in generic families of surfaces depending on one-parameter.
