Radial measures of pseudo-cones

We consider $C$-pseudo-cones, that is, closed convex sets $K \subset{\mathbb R}^n$ with $o\notin K\subset C$, for which $C$ is the recession cone. Here $C$ is a given closed convex cone in ${\mathbb R}^n$, pointed and with nonempty interior. We define a class of measures for such pseudo-cones and show how they can be interpreted as derivative measures. For a subclass of these measures, namely for dual curvature measures with negative indices, we solve a Minkowski type existence problem.

Random zonotopes and valuations

We define a random zonotope in Euclidean space, by adding finitely many random segments, which are independently and identically distributed. For this random polytope, we determine, under a mild assumption on the distribution, the expectations of the intrinsic volumes, more generally, the expectations of suitable valuations. We also prove a central limit theorem for a valuation evaluated at these random zonotopes.

Minkowski type theorems for convex sets in cones

Minkowski's classical existence theorem provides necessary and sufficient conditions for a Borel measure on the unit sphere of Euclidean space to be the surface area measure of a convex body. The solution is unique up to a translation. We deal with corresponding questions for unbounded convex sets, whose behavior at infinity is determined by a given closed convex cone. We provide an existence theorem and a stability result.

Interaction of Poisson hyperplane processes and convex bodies

Given a stationary and isotropic Poisson hyperplane process and a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$, we consider the random polytope defined by the intersection of all closed halfspaces containing $K$ that are bounded by hyperplanes of the process not intersecting $K$. We investigate how well the expected mean width of this random polytope approximates the mean width of $K$ if the intensity of the hyperplane process tends to infinity.

${\rm SO}(n)$ covariant local tensor valuations on polytopes

The Minkowski tensors are valuations on the space of convex bodies in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with values in a space of symmetric tensors, having additional covariance and continuity properties. They are extensions of the intrinsic volumes, and as these, they are the subject of classification theorems, and they admit localizations in the form of measure-valued valuations. For these local tensor valuations, restricted to convex polytopes, a classification theorem has been proved recently, under the assumption of isometry covariance, but without any continuity assumption. This characterization result is extended here, replacing the covariance under orthogonal transformations by invariance under proper rotations only. This yields additional local tensor valuations on polytopes in dimensions two and three, but not in higher dimensions. They are completely classified in this paper.

Multiplication of convex sets in C(K) spaces

Let C(K) denote the Banach algebra of continuous real functions, with the supremum norm, on a compact Hausdorff space K. For two subsets of C(K), one can define their product by pointwise multiplication, just as the Minkowski sum of the sets is defined by pointwise addition. Our main interest is in correlations between properties of the product of closed order intervals in C(K) and properties of the underlying space K. When K is finite, the product of two intervals in C(K) is always an interval. Surprisingly, the converse of this result is true for a wide class of compacta. We show that a first-countable space K is finite whenever it has the property that the product of two nonnegative intervals is closed, or the property that the product of an interval with itself is convex. That some assumption on K is needed, can be seen from the fact that, if K is the Stone-Cech compactification of N, then the product of two intervals in C(K) with continuous boundary functions is always an interval. For any K, it is proved that the product of two positive intervals is always an interval, and that the product of two nonnegative intervals is always convex. Finally, square roots of intervals are investigated, with results of similar type.

On the cells in a stationary Poisson hyperplane mosaic

Let $X$ be the mosaic generated by a stationary Poisson hyperplane process $\hat X$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$. Under some mild conditions on the spherical directional distribution of $\hat X$ (which are satisfied, for example, if the process is isotropic), we show that with probability one the set of cells ($d$-polytopes) of $X$ has the following properties. The translates of the cells are dense in the space of convex bodies. Every combinatorial type of simple $d$-polytopes is realized infinitely often by the cells of $X$. A further result concerns the distribution of the typical cell.

Random conical tessellations

We consider tessellations of the Euclidean $(d-1)$-sphere by $(d-2)$-dimensional great subspheres or, equivalently, tessellations of Euclidean $d$-space by hyperplanes through the origin; these we call conical tessellations. For random polyhedral cones defined as typical cones in a conical tessellation by random hyperplanes, and for random cones which are dual to these in distribution, we study expectations for a general class of geometric functionals. They include combinatorial quantities, such as face numbers, as well as, for example, conical intrinsic volumes. For isotropic conical tessellations (those generated by random hyperplanes with spherically symmetric distribution), we determine the complete covariance structure of the random vector whose components are the $k$-face contents of the induced spherical random polytopes. This result can be considered as a spherical counterpart of a classical result due to Roger Miles.

Rotation covariant local tensor valuations on convex bodies

For valuations on convex bodies in Euclidean spaces, there is by now a long series of characterization and classification theorems. The classical template is Hadwiger's theorem, saying that every rigid motion invariant, continuous, real-valued valuation on convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a linear combination of the intrinsic volumes. For tensor-valued valuations, under the assumptions of isometry covariance and continuity, there is a similar classification theorem, due to Alesker. Also for the local extensions of the intrinsic volumes, the support, curvature and area measures, there are analogous characterization results, with continuity replaced by weak continuity, and involving an additional assumption of local determination. The present authors have recently obtained a corresponding characterization result for local tensor valuations, or tensor-valued support measures (generalized curvature measures), of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The covariance assumed there was with respect to the group ${\rm O}(n)$ of orthogonal transformations. This was suggested by Alesker's observation, according to which in dimensions $n> 2$, the weaker assumption of ${\rm SO}(n)$ covariance does not yield more tensor valuations. However, for tensor-valued support measures, the distinction between proper and improper rotations does make a difference. The present paper considers, therefore, the local tensor valuations sharing the previously assumed properties, but with ${\rm O}(n)$ covariance replaced by ${\rm SO}(n)$ covariance, and provides a complete classification. New tensor valued support measures appear only in dimensions two and three.

The middle hedgehog of a planar convex body

A convexity point of a convex body is a point with the property that the union of the body and its reflection in the point is convex. It is proved that in the plane a typical convex body (in the sense of Baire category) has infinitely many convexity points. The proof makes use of the `middle hedgehog' of a planar convex body $K$, which is the curve formed by the midpoints of all affine diameters of $K$. The stated result follows from the fact that for a typical planar convex body the convex hull of the middle hedgehog has infinitely many exposed points.

The typical irregularity of virtual convex bodies

The semigroup of convex bodies in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with Minkowski addition has a canonical embedding into an abelian group; its elements have been called virtual convex bodies. Geometric interpretations of such virtual convex bodies have been particularly fruitful under the restriction to polytopes. For general convex bodies, mainly the planar case has been studied, as a part of the more general investigation of hedgehogs. Here we restrict ourselves to strictly convex bodies in ${\mathbb R}^n$. A particularly natural geometric interpretation of virtual convex bodies can then be seen in the set of differences of boundary points of two convex bodies with the same outer normal vector. We describe how in the typical case (in the sense of Baire category) this leads to a highly singular object.

Hölder continuity for support measures of convex bodies

The support measures of a convex body are a common generalization of the curvature measures and the area measures. With respect to the Hausdorff metric on the space of convex bodies, they are weakly continuous. We provide a quantitative improvement of this result, by establishing a Hölder estimate for the support measures in terms of the bounded Lipschitz metric, which metrizes the weak convergence. Specializing the result to area measures yields a reverse counterpart to earlier stability estimates, concerning Minkowski's existence theorem for convex bodies with given area measure.

Random points in halfspheres

A random spherical polytope $P_n$ in a spherically convex set $K \subset S^d$ as considered here is the spherical convex hull of $n$ independent, uniformly distributed random points in $K$. The behaviour of $P_n$ for a spherically convex set $K$ contained in an open halfsphere is quite similar to that of a similarly generated random convex polytope in a Euclidean space, but the case when $K$ is a halfsphere is different. This is what we investigate here, establishing the asymptotic behaviour, as $n$ tends to infinity, of the expectation of several characteristics of $P_n$, such as facet and vertex number, volume and surface area. For the Hausdorff distance from the halfsphere, we obtain also some almost sure asymptotic estimates.

Second moments related to Poisson hyperplane tessellations

We consider the typical cell of a stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation in d-dimensional Euclidean space. It is well known that the expected vertex number of the typical cell is independent of the directional distribution of the hyperplane process. We give sharp bounds for the variance of this vertex number, showing, in particular, that the maximum of the variance is attained if and only if the distribution of the process is rotation invariant with respect to a suitable scalar product. The employed representation of the second moment of the vertex number is a special case of formulas providing the covariance matrix for the random vector whose components are the total k-face contents of the typical cell. In the isotropic case, such formulas were first obtained by R.E. Miles. We give a more elementary proof and extend the formulas to general directional distributions.

Local tensor valuations

The local Minkowski tensors are valuations on the space of convex bodies in Euclidean space with values in a space of tensor measures. They generalize at the same time the intrinsic volumes, the curvature measures and the isometry covariant Minkowski tensors that were introduced by McMullen and characterized by Alesker. In analogy to the characterization theorems of Hadwiger and Alesker, we give here a complete classification of all locally defined tensor measures on convex bodies that share with the local Minkowski tensors the basic geometric properties of isometry covariance and weak continuity.

Typical curvature behaviour of bodies of constant width

It is known that an $n$-dimensional convex body which is typical in the sense of Baire category, shows a simple, but highly non-intuitive curvature behaviour: at almost all of its boundary points, in the sense of measure, all curvatures are zero, but there is also a dense and uncountable set of boundary points at which all curvatures are infinite. The purpose of this paper is to find a counterpart to this phenomenon for typical convex bodies of given constant width. Such bodies cannot have zero curvatures. A main result says that for a typical $n$-dimensional convex body of constant width $1$ (without loss of generality), at almost all boundary points, in the sense of measure, all curvatures are equal to $1$. (In contrast, note that a ball of width $1$ has radius $1/2$, hence all its curvatures are equal to $2$.) Since the property of constant width is linear with respect to Minkowski addition, the proof requires recourse to a linear curvature notion, which is provided by the tangential radii of curvature.

Approximation properties of random polytopes associated with Poisson hyperplane processes

We consider a stationary Poisson hyperplane process with given directional distribution and intensity in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. Generalizing the zero cell of such a process, we fix a convex body $K$ and consider the intersection of all closed halfspaces bounded by hyperplanes of the process and containing $K$. We study how well these random polytopes approximate $K$ (measured by the Hausdorff distance) if the intensity increases, and how this approximation depends on the directional distribution in relation to properties of $K$.

Rotation invariant Minkowski classes of convex bodies

A Minkowski class is a closed subset of the space of convex bodies in Euclidean space Rn which is closed under Minkowski addition and non-negative dilatations. A convex body in Rn is universal if the expansion of its support function in spherical harmonics contains non-zero harmonics of all orders. If K is universal, then a dense class of convex bodies M has the following property. There exist convex bodies T1; T2 such that M + T1 = T2, and T1; T2 belong to the rotation invariant Minkowski class generated by K. It is shown that every convex body K which is not centrally symmetric has a linear image, arbitrarily close to K, which is universal. A modified version of the result holds for centrally symmetric convex bodies. In this way, a result of S. Alesker is strengthened, and at the same time given a more elementary proof.

Large faces in Poisson hyperplane mosaics

A generalized version of a well-known problem of D. G. Kendall states that the zero cell of a stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$, under the condition that it has large volume, approximates with high probability a certain definite shape, which is determined by the directional distribution of the underlying hyperplane process. This result is extended here to typical $k$-faces of the tessellation, for $k\in\{2,...,d-1\}$. This requires the additional condition that the direction of the face be in a sufficiently small neighbourhood of a given direction.
