Timelike conjugate points in Lorentzian length spaces

We study notions of conjugate points along timelike geodesics in the synthetic setting of Lorentzian (pre-)length spaces, inspired by earlier work for metric spaces by Shankar--Sormani. After preliminary considerations on convergence of timelike and causal geodesics, we introduce and compare one-sided, symmetric, unreachable and ultimate conjugate points along timelike geodesics. We show that all such notions are compatible with the usual one in the smooth (strongly causal) spacetime setting. As applications, we prove a timelike Rauch comparison theorem, as well as a result closely related to the recently established Lorentzian Cartan--Hadamard theorem by Erös--Gieger. In the appendix, we give a detailed treatment of the Fréchet distance on the space of non-stopping curves up to reparametrization, a technical tool used throughout the paper.

Penrose junction conditions with $Λ$: Geometric insights into low-regularity metrics for impulsive gravitational waves

Impulsive gravitational waves in Minkowski space were introduced by Roger Penrose at the end of the 1960s, and have been widely studied over the decades. Here we focus on nonexpanding waves which later have been generalized to impulses traveling in all constant-curvature backgrounds, i.e., the (anti-)de Sitter universe. While Penrose's original construction was based on his vivid geometric "scissors-and-paste" approach in a flat background, until recently a comparably powerful visualization and understanding has been missing in the case with a cosmological constant $Λ\not=0$. Here we review the original Penrose construction and its generalization to non-vanishing $Λ$ in a pedagogical way, as well as the recently established visualization: A special family of global null geodesics defines an appropriate comoving coordinate system that allows to relate the distributional to the continuous form of the metric.

The Hawking-Penrose singularity theorem for $C^1$-Lorentzian metrics

We extend both the Hawking-Penrose Theorem and its generalisation due to Galloway and Senovilla to Lorentzian metrics of regularity $C^1$. For metrics of such low regularity, two main obstacles have to be addressed. On the one hand, the Ricci tensor now is distributional, and on the other hand, unique solvability of the geodesic equation is lost. To deal with the first issue in a consistent way, we develop a theory of tensor distributions of finite order, which also provides a framework for the recent proofs of the theorems of Hawking and of Penrose for $C^1$-metrics [7]. For the second issue, we study geodesic branching and add a further alternative to causal geodesic incompleteness to the theorem, namely a condition of maximal causal non-branching. The genericity condition is re-cast in a distributional form that applies to the current reduced regularity while still being fully compatible with the smooth and $C^{1,1}$-settings. In addition, we develop refinements of the comparison techniques used in the proof of the $C^{1,1}$-version of the theorem [8]. The necessary results from low regularity causality theory are collected in an appendix.

Completeness of general pp-wave spacetimes and their impulsive limit

We investigate geodesic completeness in the full family of pp-wave or Brinkmann spacetimes in their extended as well as in their impulsive form. This class of geometries contains the recently studied gyratonic pp-waves, modelling the exterior field of a spinning beam of null particles, as well as NPWs, which generalise classical pp-waves by allowing for a general wave surface. The problem of geodesic completeness reduces to the question of completeness of trajectories on a Riemannian manifold under an external force field. Building upon respective recent results we derive completeness criteria in terms of the spatial asymptotics of the profile function in the extended case. In the impulsive case we use a fixed point argument to show that irrespective of the behaviour of the profile function all geometries in the class are complete.

Geodesics in nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves with $Λ$, Part I

We investigate the geodesics in the entire class of nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in an (anti-)de Sitter universe using the distributional form of the metric. Employing a 5-dimensional embedding formalism and a general regularisation technique we prove existence and uniqueness of geodesics crossing the wave impulse leading to a completeness result. We also derive the explicit form of the geodesics thereby confirming previous results derived in a heuristic approach.

The global uniqueness and $C^1$-regularity of geodesics in expanding impulsive gravitational waves

We study geodesics in the complete family of expanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in spaces of constant curvature, that is Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter universes. Employing the continuous form of the metric we rigorously prove existence and global uniqueness of continuously differentiable geodesics (in the sense of Filippov) and study their interaction with the impulsive wave. Thereby we justify the "$C^1$-matching procedure" used in the literature to derive their explicit form.

The global existence, uniqueness and C^1-regularity of geodesics in nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves

We study geodesics in the complete family of nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in spaces of constant curvature, that is Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter universes. Employing the continuous form of the metric we prove existence and uniqueness of continuously differentiable geodesics (in the sense of Filippov) and use a C^1-matching procedure to explicitly derive their form.

Gyratonic pp-waves and their impulsive limit

We investigate a class of gravitational pp-waves which represent the exterior vacuum field of spinning particles moving with the speed of light. Such exact spacetimes are described by the original Brinkmann form of the pp-wave metric including the often neglected off-diagonal terms. We put emphasis on a clear physical and geometrical interpretation of these off-diagonal metric components. We explicitly analyze several new properties of these spacetimes associated with the spinning character of the source, such as rotational dragging of frames, geodesic deviation, impulsive limits and the corresponding behavior of geodesics.

On the geometry of impulsive gravitational waves

We describe impulsive gravitational pp-waves entirely in the distributional picture. Applying Colombeau's nonlinear framework of generalized functions we handle the formally ill-defined products of distributions which enter the geodesic as well as the geodesic deviation equation. Using a universal regularization procedure we explicitly derive regularization independent distributional limits. In the special case of impulsive plane waves we compare our results with the particle motion derived from the continuous form of the metric.

On the completeness of impulsive gravitational wave space-times

We consider a class of impulsive gravitational wave space-times, which generalize impulsive pp-waves. They are of the form $M=N\times\mathbb{R}^2_1$, where $(N,h)$ is a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension and $M$ carries the line element $ds^2=dh^2+ 2dudv+f(x)δ(u)du^2$ with $dh^2$ the line element of $N$ and $δ$ the Dirac measure. We prove a completeness result for such space-times $M$ with complete Riemannian part $N$.

Wave equations and symmetric first-order systems in case of low regularity

We analyse an algorithm of transition between Cauchy problems for second-order wave equations and first-order symmetric hyperbolic systems in case the coefficients as well as the data are non-smooth, even allowing for regularity below the standard conditions guaranteeing well-posedness. The typical operations involved in rewriting equations into systems are then neither defined classically nor consistently extendible to the distribution theoretic setting. However, employing the nonlinear theory of generalized functions in the sense of Colombeau we arrive at clear statements about the transfer of questions concerning solvability and uniqueness from wave equations to symmetric hyperbolic systems and vice versa. Finally, we illustrate how this transfer method allows to draw new conclusions on unique solvability of the Cauchy problem for wave equations with non-smooth coefficients.

Wave equations on non-smooth space-times

We consider wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds in case of low regularity. We first extend the classical solution theory to prove global unique solvability of the Cauchy problem for distributional data and right hand side on smooth globally hyperbolic space-times. Then we turn to the case where the metric is non-smooth and present a local as well as a global existence and uniqueness result for a large class of Lorentzian manifolds with a weakly singular, locally bounded metric in Colombeau's algebra of generalized functions.

A global theory of algebras of generalized functions II: tensor distributions

We extend the construction of [19] by introducing spaces of generalized tensor fields on smooth manifolds that possess optimal embedding and consistency properties with spaces of tensor distributions in the sense of L. Schwartz. We thereby obtain a universal algebra of generalized tensor fields canonically containing the space of distributional tensor fields. The canonical embedding of distributional tensor fields also commutes with the Lie derivative. This construction provides the basis for applications of algebras of generalized functions in nonlinear distributional geometry and, in particular, to the study of spacetimes of low differentiability in general relativity.

Sheaves of nonlinear generalized functions and manifold-valued distributions

This paper is part of an ongoing program to develop a theory of generalized differential geometry. We consider the space $\mathcal{G}[X,Y]$ of Colombeau generalized functions defined on a manifold $X$ and taking values in a manifold $Y$. This space is essential in order to study concepts such as flows of generalized vector fields or geodesics of generalized metrics. We introduce an embedding of the space of continuous mappings $\mathcal{C}(X,Y)$ into $\mathcal{G}[X,Y]$ and study the sheaf properties of $\mathcal{G}[X,Y]$. Similar results are obtained for spaces of generalized vector bundle homomorphisms. Based on these constructions we propose the definition of a space $\mathcal{D}'[X,Y]$ of distributions on $X$ taking values in $Y$. $\mathcal{D}'[X,Y]$ is realized as a quotient of a certain subspace of $\mathcal{G}[X,Y]$.

Remarks on the distributional Schwarzschild geometry

This work is devoted to a mathematical analysis of the distributional Schwarzschild geometry. The Schwarzschild solution is extended to include the singularity; the energy momentum tensor becomes a delta-distribution supported at r=0. Using generalized distributional geometry in the sense of Colombeau's (special) construction the nonlinearities are treated in a mathematically rigorous way. Moreover, generalized function techniques are used as a tool to give a unified discussion of various approaches taken in the literature so far; in particular we comment on geometrical issues.

Geodesics and geodesic deviation for impulsive gravitational waves

The geometry of impulsive pp-waves is explored via the analysis of the geodesic and geodesic deviation equation using the distributional form of the metric. The geodesic equation involves formally ill-defined products of distributions due to the nonlinearity of the equations and the presence of the Dirac $\de$-distribution in the space time metric. Thus, strictly speaking, it cannot be treated within Schwartz's linear theory of distributions. To cope with this difficulty we proceed by first regularizing the $\de$-singularity,then solving the regularized equation within classical smooth functions and, finally, obtaining a distributional limit as solution to the original problem. Furthermore it is shown that this limit is independent of the regularization without requiring any additional condition, thereby confirming earlier results in a mathematical rigorous fashion. We also treat the Jacobi equation which, despite being linear in the deviation vector field, involves even more delicate singular expressions, like the ``square'' of the Dirac $\de$-distribution. Again the same regularization procedure provides us with a perfectly well behaved smooth regularization and a regularization-independent distributional limit. Hence it is concluded that the geometry of impulsive pp-waves can be described consistently using distributions as long as careful regularization procedures are used to handle the ill-defined products.
