Largest values of the Stern sequence, alternating binary expansions and continuants

We study the largest values of the $r$th row of Stern's diatomic array. In particular, we prove some conjectures of Lansing. Our main tool is the connection between the Stern sequence, alternating binary expansions and continuants. This allows us to reduce the problem of ordering the elements of the Stern sequence to the problem of ordering continuants. We describe an operation that increases the value of a continuant, allowing us to reduce the problem of largest continuants to ordering continuants of very special shape. Finally, we order these special continuants using some identities and inequalities involving Fibonacci numbers.

Elementary resolution of a family of quartic Thue equations over function fields

We consider and completely solve the parametrized family of Thue equations \begin{eqnarray*}X(X-Y)(X+Y)(X-λY)+Y^4=ξ,\end{eqnarray*} where the solutions $x,y$ come from the ring $\mathbb{C}[T]$, the parameter $λ\in\mathbb{C}[T]$ is some non-constant polynomial and $0\neqξ\in\mathbb{C}$. It is a function field analogue of the family solved by Mignotte, Pethő and Roth in the integer case. A feature of our proof is that we avoid the use of height bounds by considering a smaller relevant ring for which we can determine the units more easily. Because of this, the proof is short and the arguments are very elementary (in particular compared to previous results on parametrized Thue equations over function fields).

An explicit André-Oort type result for P^1(C) x G_m(C) based on logarithmic forms

Using linear forms in logarithms we prove an explicit result of André-Oort type for $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C}) \times \mathbb{G}_m(\mathbb{C})$. In this variation the special points of $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C}) \times \mathbb{G}_m(\mathbb{C})$ are of the form $(α, λ)$, with $α$ a singular modulus and $λ$ a root of unity. The qualitative version of our result states that if $\mathcal{C}$ is a closed algebraic curve in $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C}) \times \mathbb{G}_m(\mathbb{C})$, defined over a number field, not containing a horizontal or vertical line, then $\mathcal{C}$ contains only finitely many special points. The proof is based on linear forms in logarithms. This differs completely from the method used by the author recently in the proof of the same kind of statement, where class field theory was applied.
