Commutative algebraic groups and $p$-adic linear forms

Let $G$ be a commutative algebraic group defined over a number field $K$ that is disjoint over $K$ to $\mathbb G_a$ and satisfies the condition of semistability. Consider a linear form $l$ on the Lie algebra of $G$ with algebraic coefficients and an algebraic point $u$ in a $p$-adic neighbourhood of the origin with the condition that $l$ does not vanish at $u$. We give a lower bound for the $p$-adic absolute value of $l(u)$ which depends up to an effectively computable constant only on the height of the linear form, the height of the point $u$ and $p$.

Only finitely many Tribonacci Diophantine triples exist

Diophantine triples taking values in recurrence sequences have recently been studied quite a lot. In particular the question was raised whether or not there are finitely many Diophantine triples in the Tribonacci sequence. We answer this question here in the affirmative. We prove that there are only finitely many triples of integers $1\le u<v<w$ such that $uv+1,uw+1,vw+1$ are Tribonacci numbers. The proof depends on the Subspace theorem.

Some applications of the $p$-adic analytic subgroup theorem

We use a $p$-adic analogue of the analytic subgroup theorem of Wüstholz to deduce the transcendence and linear independence of some new classes of $p$-adic numbers. In particular we give $p$-adic analogues of results of Wüstholz contained in [G. Wüstholz, Some remarks on a conjecture of Waldschmidt, Diophantine approximations and transcendental numbers, Progress in Mathematics 31, Birkhäuser Boston, Boston, MA, (1983), 329-336] and generalizations of results obtained by Bertrand in [D. Bertrand, Sous-groupes à un paramètre $p$-adique de variétés de groupe, Invent. Math. 40 (1977), no. 2, 171-193] and [D. Bertrand, Problèmes locaux, Société Mathématique de France, Astérisque 60-70 (1979), 163-189].

30 years of collaboration

We highlight some of the most important cornerstones of the long standing and very fruitful collaboration of the Austrian Diophantine Number Theory research group and the Number Theory and Cryptography School of Debrecen. However, we do not plan to be complete in any sense but give some interesting data and selected results that we find particularly nice. At the end we focus on two topics in more details, namely a problem that origins from a conjecture of Rényi and Erdős (on the number of terms of the square of a polynomial) and another one that origins from a question of Zelinsky (on the unit sum number problem), which will be presented in turn. This paper evolved from a plenary invited talk that the authors gave at the Joint Austrian-Hungarian Mathematical Conference 2015, August 25-27, 2015 in Győr (Hungary).

Elementary resolution of a family of quartic Thue equations over function fields

We consider and completely solve the parametrized family of Thue equations \begin{eqnarray*}X(X-Y)(X+Y)(X-λY)+Y^4=ξ,\end{eqnarray*} where the solutions $x,y$ come from the ring $\mathbb{C}[T]$, the parameter $λ\in\mathbb{C}[T]$ is some non-constant polynomial and $0\neqξ\in\mathbb{C}$. It is a function field analogue of the family solved by Mignotte, Pethő and Roth in the integer case. A feature of our proof is that we avoid the use of height bounds by considering a smaller relevant ring for which we can determine the units more easily. Because of this, the proof is short and the arguments are very elementary (in particular compared to previous results on parametrized Thue equations over function fields).

The $p$-adic analytic subgroup theorem revisited

It is well-known that the Wüstholz' analytic subgroup theorem is one of the most powerful theorems in transcendence theory. The theorem gives in a very systematic and conceptual way the transcendence of a large class of complex numbers, e.g. the transcendence of $π$ which is originally due to Lindemann. In this paper we revisit the $p$-adic analogue of the analytic subgroup theorem and present a proof based on the method described and developed by the authors in a recent related paper.
