$2$-Spinors via Linear Algebra

We give a streamlined account of $2$-spinors, up to and including the Dirac equation, using little more than the resources of linear algebra. We prove that the Dirac bundle is isomorphic to the associated bundles $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times_{\mathrm{SU}_2} S$ and $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times_{\mathrm{SU}_2} \bar{S}$. A solution of the Dirac equation determines a pair of conjugate $2$-spinor fields over the mass shell $X_m$.

Comparison of the depths on both sides of the local Langlands correspondence for Weil-restricted groups (with appendix by Jessica Fintzen)

Let $E/F$ be a finite and Galois extension of non-archimedean local fields. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over $E$ and let $M: = \mathfrak{R}_{E/F}\, G$ be the reductive group over $F$ obtained by Weil restriction of scalars. We investigate depth, and the enhanced local Langlands correspondence, in the transition from $G(E)$ to $M(F)$. We obtain a depth-comparison formula for Weil-restricted groups.

Morita equivalence for $k$-algebras

We review Morita equivalence for finite type $k$-algebras $A$ and also a weakening of Morita equivalence which we call stratified equivalence. The spectrum of $A$ is the set of equivalence classes of irreducible $A$-modules. For any finite type $k$-algebra $A$, the spectrum of $A$ is in bijection with the set of primitive ideals of $A$. The stratified equivalence relation preserves the spectrum of $A$ and also preserves the periodic cyclic homology of $A$. However, the stratified equivalence relation permits a tearing apart of strata in the primitive ideal space which is not allowed by Morita equivalence. A key example illustrating the distinction between Morita equivalence and stratified equivalence is provided by affine Hecke algebras associated to extended affine Weyl groups.

Smooth Duals of Inner Forms of $GL_n$ and $SL_n$

Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. We prove that every Bernstein component in the smooth dual of each inner form of the general linear group $GL_n(F)$ is canonically in bijection with the extended quotient for the action, given by Bernstein, of a finite group on a complex torus. For inner forms of $SL_n(F)$ we prove that each Bernstein component is canonically in bijection with the associated twisted extended quotient. In both cases, the bijections satisfy naturality properties with respect to the tempered dual, parabolic induction, central character, and the local Langlands correspondence.

Stratified Langlands duality in the $A_n$ tower

Let $\mathbf{S}_k$ denote a maximal torus in the complex Lie group $\mathbf{G} = \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})/C_k$ and let $T_k$ denote a maximal torus in its compact real form $\mathrm{SU}_n(\mathbb{C})/C_k$, where $k$ divides $n$. Let $W$ denote the Weyl group of $\mathbf{G}$, namely the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We elucidate the structure of the extended quotient $\mathbf{S}_k // W$ as an algebraic variety and of $T_k // W$ as a topological space, in both cases describing them as bundles over unions of tori. Corresponding to the invariance of $K$-theory under Langlands duality, this calculation provides a homotopy equivalence between $T_k // W$ and its dual $T_{\frac{n}{k}} // W$. Hence there is an isomorphism in cohomology for the extended quotients which is stratified as a direct sum over conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. We use our formula to compute a number of examples.

Functoriality and K-theory for $GL_n(\mathbb{R})$

We investigate base change and automorphic induction $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R}$ at the level of K-theory for the general linear group $GL_n(\mathbb{R})$. In the course of this study, we compute in detail the C*-algebra K-theory of this disconnected group. We investigate the interaction of base change with the Baum-Connes correspondence for $GL_n(\mathbb{R})$ and $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$. This article is the archimedean companion of our previous article in the Journal of Noncommutative Geometry.

L-packets and depth for SL_2(K) with K a local function field of characteristic 2

Let G = SL_2(K) with K a local function field of characteristic 2. We review Artin-Schreier theory for the field K, and show that this leads to a parametrization of certain L-packets in the smooth dual of G. We relate this to a recent geometric conjecture. The L-packets in the principal series are parametrized by quadratic extensions, and the supercuspidal L-packets of cardinality 4 are parametrized by biquadratic extensions. Each supercuspidal packet of cardinality 4 is accompanied by a singleton packet for SL_1(D). We compute the depths of the irreducible constituents of all these L-packets for SL_2(K) and its inner form SL_1(D).

On the local Langlands correspondence for non-tempered representations

Let G be a reductive p-adic group. We study how a local Langlands correspondence for irreducible tempered G-representations can be extended to a local Langlands correspondence for all irreducible smooth representations of G. We prove that, under a natural condition involving compatibility with unramified twists, this is possible in a canonical way. To this end we introduce analytic R-groups associated to non-tempered essentially square-integrable representations of Levi subgroups of G. We establish the basic properties of these new R-groups, which generalize Knapp--Stein R-groups.

The local spectrum of the Dirac operator for the universal cover of $SL_2(\mathbb R)$

Using representation theory, we compute the spectrum of the Dirac operator on the universal covering group of $SL_2(\mathbb R)$, exhibiting it as the generator of $KK^1(\mathbb C, \mathfrak A)$, where $\mathfrak A$ is the reduced $C^*$-algebra of the group. This yields a new and direct computation of the $K$-theory of $\mathfrak A$. A fundamental role is played by the limit-of-discrete-series representation, which is the frontier between the discrete and the principal series of the group. We provide a detailed analysis of the localised spectra of the Dirac operator and compute the Dirac cohomology.

Geometric structure and the local Langlands conjecture

We prove that a strengthened form of the local Langlands conjecture is valid throughout the principal series of any connected split reductive $p$-adic group. The method of proof is to establish the presence of a very simple geometric structure, in both the smooth dual and the Langlands parameters. We prove that this geometric structure is present, in the same way, for the general linear group, including all of its inner forms. With these results as evidence, we give a detailed formulation of a general geometric structure conjecture.

L-packets and formal degrees for SL_2(K) with K a local function field of characteristic 2

Let G = SL_2(K) with K a local function field of characteristic 2. We review Artin-Schreier theory for the field K, and show that this leads to a parametrization of L-packets in the smooth dual of G. We relate this to a recent geometric conjecture. The L-packets in the principal series are parametrized by quadratic extensions, and the supercuspidal L-packets by biquadratic extensions. We compute the formal degrees of the elements in the supercuspidal packets.

K-theory and the connection index

Let G denote a split simply connected almost simple p-adic group. The classical example is the special linear group SL(n). We study the K-theory of the unramified unitary principal series of G and prove that the rank of K_0 is the connection index f(G). We relate this result to a recent refinement of the Baum-Connes conjecture, and show explicitly how generators of K_0 contribute to the K-theory of the Iwahori C*-algebra I(G).

Extended quotients in the principal series of reductive p-adic groups

The geometric conjecture developed by the authors in [1,2,3,4] applies to the smooth dual Irr(G) of any reductive p-adic group G. It predicts a definite geometric structure - the structure of an extended quotient - for each component in the Bernstein decomposition of Irr(G). In this article, we prove the geometric conjecture for the principal series in any split connected reductive p-adic group G. The proof proceeds via Springer parameters and Langlands parameters. As a consequence of this approach, we establish strong links with the local Langlands correspondence. One important feature of our approach is the emphasis on two-sided cells in extended affine Weyl groups.

Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters and extended quotients

The Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters are important parameters in the representation theory of $p$-adic groups and affine Hecke algebras. We show that the Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters have a definite geometric structure, namely that of the extended quotient $T//W$ of a complex torus $T$ by a finite Weyl group $W$. More generally, we show that the corresponding parameters, in the principal series of a reductive $p$-adic group with connected centre, admit such a geometric structure. This confirms, in a special case, our recently formulated geometric conjecture. In the course of this study, we provide a unified framework for Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters on the one hand, and Springer parameters on the other hand. Our framework contains a complex parameter $s$, and allows us to interpolate between $s = 1$ and $s = \sqrt q$. When $s = 1$, we recover the parameters which occur in the Springer correspondence; when $s = \sqrt q$, we recover the Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters.

Geometric structure in the principal series of the p-adic group G_2

In the representation theory of reductive $p$-adic groups $G$, the issue of reducibility of induced representations is an issue of great intricacy. It is our contention, expressed as a conjecture in [3], that there exists a simple geometric structure underlying this intricate theory. We will illustrate here the conjecture with some detailed computations in the principal series of $G_2$. A feature of this article is the role played by cocharacters $h_c$ attached to two-sided cells $c$ in certain extended affine Weyl groups. The quotient varieties which occur in the Bernstein programme are replaced by extended quotients. We form the disjoint union $A(G)$ of all these extended quotient varieties. We conjecture that, after a simple algebraic deformation, the space $A(G)$ is a model of the smooth dual $Irr(G)$. In this respect, our programme is a conjectural refinement of the Bernstein programme. The algebraic deformation is controlled by cocharacters $h_c$, one for each two-sided cell $c$ in certain extended affine Weyl groups. The cocharacters themselves appear to be closely related to Langlands parameters.
