Eigenfunctions of transfer operators and automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume

We develop cohomological interpretations for several types of automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume. We then use these interpretations to establish explicit isomorphisms between spaces of automorphic forms, cohomology spaces and spaces of eigenfunctions of transfer operators. These results show a deep relation between spectral entities of Hecke surfaces of infinite volume and the dynamics of their geodesic flows.

Optical-acoustical interaction in FPU-chains with alternating large masses (plus appendix)

One of the problems of periodic FPU-chains with alternating masses is whether significant interactions exist between the so-called (high frequency) optical and (low frequency) acoustical groups. We show that for $α$-chains with $4n$ and $8n$ particles ($n= 1, 2, \ldots$) we have significant interactions caused by external forcing. For $β$-chains with $4$ and $8$ particles the interactions are characterised by parametric forcing, the interactions are negligible.

Multiple period integrals and cohomology

This work gives a version of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism with a non-abelian $H^1$ in group cohomology. Manin has given a map from vectors of cusp forms to a noncommutative cohomology set by means of iterated integrals. We show Manin's map is injective but far from surjective. By extending Manin's map we are able to construct a bijective map and remarkably this establishes the existence of a non-abelian version of the Eichler-Shimura map.

Holomorphic automorphic forms and cohomology

We investigate the correspondence between holomorphic automorphic forms on the upper half-plane with complex weight and parabolic cocycles. For integral weights at least 2 this correspondence is given by the Eichler integral. Knopp generalized this to real weights. We show that for weights that are not an integer at least 2 the generalized Eichler integral gives an injection into the first cohomology group with values in a module of holomorphic functions, and characterize the image. We impose no condition on the growth of the automorphic forms at the cusps. For real weights that are not an integer at least 2 we similarly characterize the space of cusp forms and the space of entire automorphic forms. We give a relation between the cohomology classes attached to holomorphic automorphic forms of real weight and the existence of harmonic lifts. A tool in establishing these results is the relation to cohomology groups with values in modules of "analytic boundary germs", which are represented by harmonic functions on subsets of the upper half-plane. Even for positive integral weights cohomology with these coefficients can distinguish all holomorphic automorphic forms, unlike the classical Eichler theory.

Perturbation of zeros of the Selberg zeta-function for $Γ_0(4)$

We study the asymptotic behavior of zeros of the Selberg zeta-function for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(4)$ as a function of a one-parameter family of characters tending to the trivial character. The motivation for the study comes from observations based on numerical computations. Some of the observed phenomena lead to precise theorems that we prove and compare with the original numerical results.

Higher order Maass forms

We determine the size of spaces of higher order Maass forms of even weight for cofinite discrete subgroups of PSL(2,R) with cusps. If exponential growth at the cusps is allowed, the spaces of Maass forms of a given order are as large as algebraic constrictions allow. We show the analogous statement for the spaces of holomorphic forms. For functions on the universal covering group of PSL(2,R) we introduce the concept of generalized weight. For the resulting spaces of higher order Maass forms with even generalized weight we show that the size is maximal.
