A Survey of Spatio-Temporal Couplings throughout High-Power Ultrashort Lasers

The investigation of spatio-temporal couplings (STCs) of broadband light beams is becoming a key topic for the optimization as well as applications of ultrashort laser systems. This calls for accurate measurements of STCs. Yet, it is only recently that such complete spatio-temporal or spatio-spectral characterization has become possible, and it has so far mostly been implemented at the output of the laser systems, where experiments take place. In this survey, we present for the first time STC measurements at different stages of a collection of high-power ultrashort laser systems, all based on the chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) technique, but with very different output characteristics. This measurement campaign reveals spatio-temporal effects with various sources, and motivates the expanded use of STC characterization throughout CPA laser chains, as well as in a wider range of types of ultrafast laser systems. In this way knowledge will be gained not only about potential defects, but also about the fundamental dynamics and operating regimes of advanced ultrashort laser systems.

Demonstration of stable long-term operation of a kilohertz laser-plasma accelerator

We report on the stable and continuous operation of a kilohertz laser-plasma accelerator. Electron bunches with 2.6 pC charge and 2.5 MeV peak energy were generated via injection and trapping in a downward plasma density ramp. This density transition was produced in a newly designed asymmetrically shocked gas nozzle. The reproducibility of the electron source was also assessed over a period of a week and found to be satisfactory with similar values of the beam charge and energy. These results show that the reproducibility and stability of the laser-plasma accelerator are greatly enhanced on the long-term scale when using a robust scheme for density gradient injection.

Generation of XUV spectral continua from relativistic plasma mirrors driven in the near-single-cycle limit

function of the CEP, we observe a transition from a modulated to a continuous SHHG spectrum, indicating the transition from double to high-contrast isolated attosecond pulse emission. Single shot-acquisitions of XUV spectral continua support isolated attosecond pulses with isolation degrees between 10 and 50 for the majority of the driving pulse CEPs, which represents a significant improvement in terms of isolation degree as well as repetition rate over previous results obtained with 2-cycle drivers at 10-Hz. 2D Particle-in-cell simulations corroborate this interpretation and predict percent-level efficiencies for the generation of an isolated attosecond pulse even without any spectral filtering.

Relativistic near-single-cycle optics at 1 kHz

We present a laser source delivering waveform-controlled 1.5-cycle pulses that can be focused to relativistic intensity at 1 kHz repetition rate. These pulses are generated by nonlinear compression of high-temporal-contrast sub-25\,fs pulses from a kHz Ti:Sapphire double-chirped pulse amplifier in a stretched flexible hollow fiber compressor scaled for high peak power. The unique capabilities of this source are demonstrated by observing carrier-envelope phase effects in laser-wakefield acceleration of relativistic electrons for the first time.

Carrier-envelope phase stability of hollow-fibers used for high-energy, few-cycle pulse generation

We investigated the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stability of a hollow-fiber setup used for high-energy, few-cycle pulse generation. Saturation of the output pulse energy is observed at 0.6 mJ for a 260 um inner-diameter, 1 m long fiber, statically filled with neon, with the pressure adjusted to achieve an output spectrum capable of supporting sub-4fs pulses. The maximum output pulse energy can be increased to 0.8mJ by using either differential pumping, or circularly polarized input pulses. We observe the onset of an ionization-induced CEP instability, which does not increase beyond an input pulse energy of 1.25 mJ due to losses in the fiber caused by ionization. There is no significant difference in the CEP stability with differential pumping compared to static-fill, demonstrating that gas flow in differentially pumped fibers does not degrade the CEP stabilization.
