Smooth fans that are endpoint rigid

Let $X$ be a smooth fan and denote its set of endpoints by $E(X)$. Let $E$ be one of the following spaces: the natural numbers, the irrational numbers, or the product of the Cantor set with the natural numbers. We prove that there is a smooth fan $X$ such that $E(X)$ is homeomorphic to $E$ and for every homeomorphism $h \colon X \to X$, the restriction of $h$ to $E(X)$ is the identity. On the other hand, we also prove that if $X$ is any smooth fan such that $E(X)$ is homeomorphic to complete Erdős space, then $X$ is necessarily homeomorphic to the Lelek fan; this adds to a 1989 result by Włodzimierz Charatonik.

The hyperspace of non-cut subcontinua of graphs and dendrites

Given a continuum $X$, let $C(X)$ denote the hyperspace of all subcontinua of $X$. In this paper we study the Vietoris hyperspace $NC^{*}(X)=\{ A \in C(X):X\setminus A\text{ is connected}\}$ when $X$ is a finite graph or a dendrite; in particular, we give conditions under which $NC^{*}(X)$ is compact, connected, locally connected or totally disconnected. Also, we prove that if $X$ is a dendrite and the set of endpoints of $X$ is dense, then $NC^{*}(X)$ is homeomorphic to the Baire space of irrational numbers.

A characterization of the product of the rational numbers and complete Erdős space

Erdős space $\mathfrak{E}$ and complete Erdős space $\mathfrak{E}_c$ have been previously shown to have topological characterizations. In this paper, we provide a topological characterization of the topological space $\mathbb{Q}\times\mathfrak{E}_c$, where $\mathbb{Q}$ is the space of rational numbers. As a corollary, we show that the Vietoris hyperspace of finite sets $\mathcal{F}(\mathfrak{E}_c)$ is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{Q}\times\mathfrak{E}_c$. We also characterize the factors of $\mathbb{Q}\times\mathfrak{E}_c$. An interesting open question that is left open is whether $σ{\mathfrak{E}_c}^ω$, the $σ$-product of countably many copies of $\mathfrak{E}_c$, is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{Q}\times\mathfrak{E}_c$.

Countable dense homogeneity of function spaces

In this paper we consider the question of when the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on $X$ with the pointwise convergence topology is countable dense homogeneous. In particular, we focus on the case when $X$ is countable with a unique non-isolated point $\infty$. In this case, $C_p(X)$ is countable dense homogeneous if and only if the filter of open neighborhoods of $\infty$ is a non-meager $P$-filter.

Far points and discretely generated spaces

We give a partial solution to a question by Alas, Junqueria and Wilson by proving that under PFA the one-point compactification of a locally compact, discretely generated and countably tight space is also discretely generated. After this, we study the cardinal number given by the smallest possible character of remote and far sets of separable metrizable spaces. Finally, we prove that in some cases a countable space has far points.

Countable dense homogeneity and the Cantor set

It is shown that CH implies the existence of a compact Hausdorff space that is countable dense homogeneous, crowded and does not contain topological copies of the Cantor set. This contrasts with a previous result by the author which says that for any crowded Hausdorff space $X$ of countable $π$-weight, if ${}^ω{X}$ is countable dense homogeneous, then $X$ must contain a topological copy of the Cantor set.

Remote Filters and Discretely Generated Spaces

Alas, Junqueira and Wilson asked whether there is a discretely generated locally compact space whose one point compactification is not discretely generated and gave a consistent example using CH. Their construction uses a remote filter in $ω\times{}^ω2$ with a base of order type $ω_1$ when ordered modulo compact subsets. In this paper we study the existence and preservation (under forcing extension) of similar types of filters, mainly using small uncountable cardinals. With these results we show that the CH example can be constructed in more general situations.

A Whitney map onto the Long Arc

In a recent paper, Garc\'ıa-Velazquez has extended the notion of Whitney map to include maps with non-metrizable codomain and left open the question of whether there is a continuum that admits such a Whitney map. In this paper, we consider two examples of hereditarily indecomposable, chainable continua of weight $ω_1$ constructed by Michel Smith; we show that one of them admits a Whitney function onto the long arc and the other admits no Whitney maps at all.

Wijsman hyperspaces of non-separable metric spaces

Given a metric space $\langle X,ρ\rangle$, consider its hyperspace of closed sets $CL(X)$ with the Wijsman topology $τ_{W(ρ)}$. It is known that $\langle{CL(X),τ_{W(ρ)}}\rangle$ is metrizable if and only if $X$ is separable and it is an open question by Di Maio and Meccariello whether this is equivalent to $\langle{CL(X),τ_{W(ρ)}}\rangle$ being normal. In this paper we prove that if the weight of $X$ is a regular uncountable cardinal and $X$ is locally separable, then $\langle{CL(X),τ_{W(ρ)}}\rangle$ is not normal. We also solve some questions by Cao, Junnilla and Moors regarding isolated points in Wijsman hyperspaces.
