Spectral edge-to-edge topological state transfer in diamond photonic lattices

Transfer of information between topological edge states is a robust way of spatially manipulating quantum states while preserving their coherence in lattice environments. This method is particularly efficient when the edge modes are kept within the topological gap of the lattice during the transfer. In this work we show experimentally the transfer of photonic modes between topological edge states located at opposite ends of a dimerized one-dimensional photonic lattice. We use a diamond lattice of coupled waveguides and show that the transfer is insensitive both to the presence of a high density of states in the form of a flat band at an energy close to that of the edge states, and to the presence of disorder in the hoppings. We explore dynamics in the waveguide lattice using wavelength-scan method, where different input wavelength translates into different effective waveguide length. These results open the way to the implementation of more efficient protocols based on the active driving of the hoppings.

Controlled transport based on multiorbital Aharonov-Bohm photonic caging

The induction of synthetic magnetic fields on lattice structures allows to effectively control their localization and transport properties. In this work, we generate effective $π$ magnetic fluxes on a multi-orbital diamond lattice, where first ($S$) and second ($P$) order modes effectively interact. We implement a $z$-scan method on femtosecond laser written photonic lattices and experimentally observe Aharonov-Bohm caging for $S$ and $P$ modes, as a consequence of a band transformation and the emergence of a spectrum composed of three degenerated flat bands. As an application, we demonstrate a perfect control of the dynamics, where we translate an input excitation across the lattice in a completely linear and controlled way. Our model, based on a flat band spectrum, allows us to choose the direction of transport depending on the excitation site or input phase.

A simple method to construct Flat Band lattices

We develop a simple and general method to construct arbitrary Flat Band lattices. We identify the basic ingredients behind zero-dispersion bands and develop a method to construct extended lattices based on a consecutive repetition of a given mini-array. The number of degenerated localized states is defined by the number of connected mini-arrays times the number of modes preserving the symmetry at a given connector site. In this way, we create one or more (depending on the lattice geometry) complete degenerated Flat Bands for quasi-one and two-dimensional systems. We probe our method by studying several examples, and discuss the effect of additional interactions like anisotropy or nonlinearity. At the end, we test our method by studying numerically a ribbon lattice using a continuous description.

Transport in Sawtooth photonic lattices

We investigate, theoretically and experimentally, a photonic realization of a Sawtooth lattice. This special lattice exhibits two spectral bands, with one of them experiencing a complete collapse to a highly degenerate flat band for a special set of inter-site coupling constants. We report the ob- servation of different transport regimes, including strong transport inhibition due to the appearance of the non-diffractive flat band. Moreover, we excite localized Shockley surfaces states, residing in the gap between the two linear bands.

Compactification tuning for nonlinear localized modes in sawtooth lattices

We discuss the properties of nonlinear localized modes in sawtooth lattices, in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model with general on-site nonlinearity. Analytic conditions for existence of exact compact three-site solutions are obtained, and explicitly illustrated for the cases of power-law (cubic) and saturable nonlinearities. These nonlinear compact modes appear as continuations of linear compact modes belonging to a flat dispersion band. While for the linear system a compact mode exists only for one specific ratio of the two different coupling constants, nonlinearity may lead to compactification of otherwise non-compact localized modes for a range of coupling ratios, at some specific power. For saturable lattices, the compactification power can be tuned by also varying the nonlinear parameter. Introducing different on-site energies and anisotropic couplings yield further possibilities for compactness tuning. The properties of strongly localized modes are investigated numerically for cubic and saturable nonlinearities, and in particular their stability over large parameter regimes is shown. Since the linear flat band is isolated, its compact modes may be continued into compact nonlinear modes both for focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. Results are discussed in relation to recent realizations of sawtooth photonic lattices.

Photorefractive writing and probing of anisotropic linear and non-linear lattices

We study experimentally the writing of one- and two-dimensional photorefractive lattices, focusing on the often overlooked transient regime. Our measurements agree well with theory, in particular concerning the ratio of the drift to diffusion terms. We then study the transverse dynamics of coherent waves propagating in the lattices, in a few novel and simple configurations. For focused linear waves with broad transverse spectrum, we remark that both the intensity distributions in real space ("discrete diffraction") and Fourier space ("Brillouin zone spectroscopy") reflect the Bragg planes and band structure. For non-linear waves, we observe modulational instability and discrete solitons formation in time domain. We discuss also the non-ideal effects inherent to the photo-induction technique : anisotropy, residual nonlinearity, diffusive term, non-stationarity.

Analytical model for waveguide light propagation and applications

We study the polarization properties of elliptical femtosecond-laser-written waveguides arrays. A new analytical model is presented to explain the asymmetry of the spatial transverse profiles of linearly polarized modes in these waveguides. This asymmetry produces a polarization dependent coupling coefficient, between adjacent waveguides, which strongly affects the propagation of light in a lattice. Our analysis explains how this effect can be exploited to tune the final intensity distribution of light propagated through the array, and links the properties of a polarizing beam splitter in integrated optical circuits to the geometry of the waveguides.

Observation of bound states in Lieb photonic lattices

We present the first experimental demonstration of a new type of bound states in the continuum, namely, compacton-like linear states in flat bands lattices. To this end, photonic Lieb lattices are employed, which exhibit three tight-binding bands, with one being perfectly flat. Our results could be of great importance for fundamental physics as well as for various applications concerning imaging and data transmission.

Random dimer model in pseudo two-dimensional lattices

In this work, we study long-time wave transport in correlated and uncorrelated disordered 2D arrays. When a separation of dimensions is applied to the model, we find that the predicted 1D random dimer phenomenology also appears in so-called pseudo-2D arrays. Therefore, a threshold behavior is observed in terms of the effective size for eigenmodes, as well as in long-time dynam- ics. For this threshold behavior to be observed a minimum system size is required, what is very important when considering a possible experimental realization. For the long-time evolution, we find that for short-range correlated lattices a super-diffusive long-range transport is observed, while for completely uncorrelated disorder in 2D transport becomes sub-diffusive within the localization length and random binary pseudo-2D arrays show localization.

Discrete flat-band solitons in the Kagome lattice

We consider a model for a two-dimensional Kagome-lattice with defocusing nonlinearity, and show that families of localized discrete solitons may bifurcate from localized linear modes of the flat band with zero power threshold. Each family of such fundamental nonlinear modes corresponds to a unique configuration in the strong-nonlinearity limit. By choosing well-tuned dynamical perturbations, small-amplitude, strongly localized solutions from different families may be switched into each other, as well as moved between different lattice positions. In a window of small power, the lowest-energy state is a symmetry-broken localized state, which may appear spontaneously.

Mobility of solitons in one-dimensional lattices with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity

We investigate mobility regimes for localized modes in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with the cubic-quintic onsite terms. Using the variational approximation (VA), the largest soliton's total power admitting progressive motion of kicked discrete solitons is predicted, by comparing the effective kinetic energy with the respective Peierls-Nabarro (PN) potential barrier. The prediction is novel for the DNLS model with the cubic-only nonlinearity too, demonstrating a reasonable agreement with numerical findings. Small self-focusing quintic term quickly suppresses the mobility. In the case of the competition between the cubic self-focusing and quintic self-defocusing terms, we identify parameter regions where odd and even fundamental modes exchange their stability, involving intermediate asymmetric modes. In this case, stable solitons can be set in motion by kicking, so as to let them pass the PN barrier. Unstable solitons spontaneously start oscillatory or progressive motion, if they are located, respectively, below or above a mobility threshold. Collisions between moving discrete solitons, at the competing nonlinearities frame, are studied too.

Multi-stable regime and intermediate solutions in a nonlinear saturable coupler

We show, theoretically and experimentally, the existence of a multi-stable regime in a nonlinear saturable coupler. In spite of its simplicity, we found that this model shows generic and fundamental properties of extended saturable lattices. The study of this basic unit becomes crucial to understand localization mechanisms and dynamical properties of extended discrete nonlinear saturable systems. We theoretically predict the regions of existence of intermediate solutions, and experimentally confirm it by observing a multi-stable propagation regime in a LiNbO3 saturable coupler. This constitutes the first experimental evidence of the existence of these unstable symmetry-broken stationary solutions.

Self-trapping transition in nonlinear cubic lattices

We explore the fundamental question of the critical nonlinearity value needed to dynamically localize energy in discrete nonlinear cubic (Kerr) lattices. We focus on the effective frequency and participation ratio of the profile to determine the transition into localization in one-, two-, and three-dimensional lattices. A simple and general criterion is developed, for the case of an initially localized excitation, to define the transition region in parameter space ("dynamical tongue") from a delocalized to a localized profile. We introduce a method for computing the dynamically excited frequencies, which helps us validate our stationary ansatz approach and the effective frequency concept. A general analytical estimate of the critical nonlinearity is obtained, with an extra parameter to be determined. We find this parameter to be almost constant for two-dimensional systems and prove its validity by applying it successfully to two-dimensional binary lattices.

Expansion of a wave-packet in lattices with disorder and nonlinearity

We show, theoretically and experimentally, the counterintuitive result that an increase of disorder can result in an enhanced spreading of an initially localized excitation. Moreover, we find that adding a focusing nonlinearity facilitates the expansion of the wave-packet even further by increasing its effective size. We find a clear transition between between the regions of enhanced spreading (weak disorder) and localization (strong localization) described by a "diffusion peak".

Nonlinear localized modes in Glauber-Fock photonic lattices

We study a nonlinear Glauber-Fock lattice and the conditions for the excitation of localized structures. We investigate the particular linear properties of these lattices, including linear localized modes. We investigate numerically nonlinear modes centered in each site of the lattice. We found a strong disagreement of the general tendency between the stationary and the dynamical excitation thresholds, and we give a new definition based on both considerations.

Mobility of high-power solitons in saturable nonlinear photonic lattices

We theoretically study the properties of one-dimensional nonlinear saturable photonic lattices exhibiting multiple mobility windows for stationary solutions. The effective energy barrier decreases to a minimum in those power regions where a new intermediate stationary solution appears. As an application, we investigate the dynamics of high-power gaussian-like beams finding several regions where the light transport is enhanced.

Multiplicity of vortex soliton families in the discrete Ginzburg-Landau equation, their interactions and the formation of bound states

By using different continuation methods, we unveil a wide region in the parameter space of the discrete cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, where several families of stable vortex solitons coexist. All these stationary solutions have a symmetric amplitude profile and two different topological charges. We also discover the dynamical formation of a variety of 'bound-state' solutions, composed of two or more of these vortex solitons. All of these stable composite structures persist in the conservative cubic limit, for high values of their power content.

Peierls-Nabarro energy surfaces and directional mobility of discrete solitons in two-dimensional saturable nonlinear Schrödinger lattices

We address the problem of directional mobility of discrete solitons in two-dimensional rectangular lattices, in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model with saturable on-site nonlinearity. A numerical constrained Newton-Raphson method is used to calculate two-dimensional Peierls-Nabarro energy surfaces, which describe a pseudopotential landscape for the slow mobility of coherent localized excitations, corresponding to continuous phase-space trajectories passing close to stationary modes. Investigating the two-parameter space of the model through independent variations of the nonlinearity constant and the power, we show how parameter regimes and directions of good mobility are connected to existence of smooth surfaces connecting the stationary states. In particular, directions where solutions can move with minimum radiation can be predicted from flatter parts of the surfaces. For such mobile solutions, slight perturbations in the transverse direction yield additional transverse oscillations with frequencies determined by the curvature of the energy surfaces, and with amplitudes that for certain velocities may grow rapidly. We also describe how the mobility properties and surface topologies are affected by inclusion of weak lattice anisotropy.

Vortex solitons of the discrete Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We have found several families of vortex soliton solutions in two-dimensional discrete dissipative systems governed by the cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. There are symmetric and asymmetric solutions, and some of them have simultaneously two different topological charges. Their regions of existence and stability are determined. Additionally, we have analyzed the relation- ship between dissipation and stability for a number of solutions. We have obtained that dissipation favours the stability of the solutions.

Dissipative vortex solitons in 2D-lattices

We report the existence of stable symmetric vortex-type solutions for two-dimensional nonlinear discrete dissipative systems governed by a cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We construct a whole family of vortex solitons with a topological charge S = 1. Surprisingly, the dynamical evolution of unstable solutions of this family does not alter significantly their profile, instead their phase distribution completely changes. They transform into two-charges swirl-vortex solitons. We dynamically excite this novel structure showing its experimental feasibility.

preprint2010arXiv

Strong asymmetry for surface modes in nonlinear lattices with long-range coupling

We analyze the formation of localized surface modes on a nonlinear cubic waveguide array in the presence of exponentially-decreasing long-range interactions. We find that the long-range coupling induces a strong asymmetry between the focusing and defocusing cases for the topology of the surface modes and also for the minimum power needed to generate them. In particular, for the defocusing case, there is an upper power threshold for exciting staggered modes, which depends strongly on the long-range coupling strength. The power threshold for dynamical excitation of surface modes increase (decrease) with the strength of long-range coupling for the focusing (defocusing) cases. These effects seem to be generic for discrete lattices with long-range interactions.

Fano resonances in saturable waveguide arrays

We study a waveguide array with an embedded nonlinear saturable impurity. We solve the impurity problem in closed form and find the nonlinear localized modes. Next, we consider the scattering of a small-amplitude plane wave by a nonlinear impurity mode, and discover regions in parameter space where transmission is fully suppressed. We relate these findings with Fano resonances and propose this setup as a mean to control the transport of light across the array.
