Generalized Lense--Thirring metrics: higher-curvature corrections and solutions with matter

The Lense--Thirring spacetime describes a 4-dimensional slowly rotating approximate solution of vacuum Einstein equations valid to a linear order in rotation parameter. It is fully characterized by a single metric function of the corresponding static (Schwarzschild) solution. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Lense--Thirring spacetimes to the higher-dimensional multiply-spinning case, with an ansatz that is not necessarily fully characterized by a single (static) metric function. This generalization lets us study slowly rotating spacetimes in various higher curvature gravities as well as in the presence of non-trivial matter. Moreover, the ansatz can be recast in Painlev{é}--Gullstrand form (and thence is manifestly regular on the horizon) and admits a tower of exact rank-2 and higher rank Killing tensors that rapidly grows with the number of dimensions. In particular, we construct slowly multiply-spinning solutions in Lovelock gravity and notably show that in four dimensions Einstein gravity is the only non-trivial theory amongst all up to quartic curvature gravities that admits a Lense--Thirring solution characterized by a single metric function.

Holographic complexity of rotating black holes

Within the framework of the "complexity equals action" and "complexity equals volume" conjectures, we study the properties of holographic complexity for rotating black holes. We focus on a class of odd-dimensional equal-spinning black holes for which considerable simplification occurs. We study the complexity of formation, uncovering a direct connection between complexity of formation and thermodynamic volume for large black holes. We consider also the growth-rate of complexity, finding that at late-times the rate of growth approaches a constant, but that Lloyd's bound is generically violated.

Lower-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and BTZ Black Holes

We consider the $D\to 3$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find two distinct but similar versions of the theory and obtain black hole solutions for each. For one theory the solution is an interesting generalization of the BTZ black hole that does not have constant curvature but whose thermodynamics is identical. The other theory admits a solution that is asymptotically AdS but does not approach the BTZ black hole in the limit of small Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also discuss the distinction between our solutions and those obtained by taking a $D\to 3$ limit of solutions to $D$-dimensional Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that these latter metrics are not solutions of the theories we consider except for particular constraints on the parameters.

On Taking the $D\to 4$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet Gravity: Theory and Solutions

We comment on the recently introduced Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions. We argue that it does not make sense to consider this theory to be defined by a set of $D\to 4$ solutions of the higher-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We show that a well-defined $D\to 4$ limit of Gauss-Bonnet Gravity is obtained generalizing a method employed by Mann and Ross to obtain a limit of the Einstein gravity in $D=2$ dimensions. This is a scalar-tensor theory of the Horndeski type obtained by a dimensional reduction methods. By considering simple spacetimes beyond spherical symmetry (Taub-NUT spaces) we show that the naive limit of the higher-dimensional theory to four dimensions is not well defined and contrast the resultant metrics with the actual solutions of the new theory.

Partition functions on slightly squashed spheres and flux parameters

We argue that the conjectural relation between the subleading term in the small-squashing expansion of the free energy of general three-dimensional CFTs on squashed spheres and the stress-tensor three-point charge $t_4$ proposed in arXiv:1808.02052: $F_{\mathbb{S}^3_{\varepsilon}}^{(3)}(0)=\frac{1}{630}π^4 C_{\scriptscriptstyle T} t_4$, holds for an infinite family of holographic higher-curvature theories. Using holographic calculations for quartic and quintic Generalized Quasi-topological gravities and general-order Quasi-topological gravities, we identify an analogous analytic relation between such term and the charges $t_2$ and $t_4$ valid for five-dimensional theories: $F_{\mathbb{S}^5_{\varepsilon}}^{(3)}(0)=\frac{2}{15}π^6 C_{ \scriptscriptstyle T} \left[1+\frac{3}{40} t_2+\frac{23}{630} t_4\right]$. We test both conjectures using new analytic and numerical results for conformally-coupled scalars and free fermions, finding perfect agreement.

Rotating Gauss-Bonnet BTZ Black Holes

We obtain rotating black hole solutions to the novel 3D Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity recently proposed. These solutions generalize the BTZ metric and are not of constant curvature. They possess an ergoregion and outer horizon, but do not have an inner horizon. We present their basic properties and show that they break the universality of thermodynamics present for their static charged counterparts, whose properties we also discuss. Extending our considerations to higher dimensions, we also obtain novel 4D Gauss-Bonnet rotating black strings.

Thermodynamics of Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter Black Holes

We investigate the thermodynamics of Gauss-Bonnet black holes in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes embedded in an isothermal cavity, via a Euclidean action approach. We consider both charged and uncharged black holes, working in the extended phase space where the cosmological constant is treated as a thermodynamic pressure. We examine the phase structure of these black holes through their free energy. In the uncharged case, we find both Hawking-Page and small-to-large black hole phase transitions, whose character depends on the sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. In the charged case, we demonstrate the presence of a swallowtube, signaling a compact region in phase space where a small-to-large black hole transition occurs.

(Generalized) quasi-topological gravities at all orders

A new class of higher-curvature modifications of $D(\geq 4$)-dimensional Einstein gravity has been recently identified. Densities belonging to this "Generalized quasi-topological" class (GQTGs) are characterized by possessing non-hairy generalizations of the Schwarzschild black hole satisfying $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and by having second-order equations of motion when linearized around maximally symmetric backgrounds. GQTGs for which the equation of the metric function $f(r)\equiv -g_{tt}$ is algebraic are called "Quasi-topological" and only exist for $D\geq 5$. In this paper we prove that GQTG and Quasi-topological densities exist in general dimensions and at arbitrarily high curvature orders. We present recursive formulas which allow for the systematic construction of $n$-th order densities of both types from lower order ones, as well as explicit expressions valid at any order. We also obtain the equation satisfied by $f(r)$ for general $D$ and $n$. Our results here tie up the remaining loose end in the proof presented in arXiv:1906.00987 that every gravitational effective action constructed from arbitrary contractions of the metric and the Riemann tensor is equivalent, through a metric redefinition, to some GQTG.

Misner Gravitational Charges and Variable String Strengths

As shown recently (arXiv:1903.08668), consistent thermodynamics of the Lorentzian Taub-NUT solutions with Misner strings present can be formulated provided a new pair of conjugate quantities (related to the NUT parameter) $ψ-N$ is introduced. In (arXiv:1903.08668) this pair was calculated from the Euclidean action but no geometrical interpretation for the new quantities was provided. In this paper we propose that the potential $ψ$ should be identified with the surface gravity of the Misner string and the conjugate Misner charge $N$ can be obtained by a Komar-type integration over the tubes surrounding the string singularities. We show that similar tube contributions also modify the Komar formula for the thermodynamic volume. To render the integrals finite we employ the method of Killing co-potentials. By construction the new charges then satisfy the Smarr relation. Equipped with these geometrical notions, we generalize the first law for the (possibly charged) Taub-NUT spacetimes to account for asymmetric distributions of Misner strings and their potential variable strengths.

The BTZ black hole exhibits anti-Hawking phenomena

The Unruh effect is a surprising prediction of quantum field theory that asserts accelerating observers perceive a thermal spectrum of particles with a temperature proportional to their acceleration. However, it has recently been shown that particle detectors can click less often or even cool down as their acceleration increases, in contrast to the heating one would expect. This leads to the so called anti-Unruh phenomena. Here we consider detectors outside a BTZ black hole and demonstrate the existence of black hole analogues of these effects, which we dub anti-Hawking phenomena.

Geometric Inflation

We argue that the presence of an inflationary epoch is a natural, almost unavoidable, consequence of the existence of a sensible effective action involving an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action. No additional fields besides the metric are required. We show that a family of such corrections giving rise to a well-posed cosmological evolution exists and automatically replaces the radiation-dominated early-universe Big Bang by a singularity-free period of exponential growth of the scale factor, which is gracefully connected with standard late-time $Λ$CDM cosmology. The class of higher-curvature theories giving rise to sensible cosmological evolution share additional remarkable properties such as the existence of Schwarzschild-like non-hairy black holes, or the fact that, just like for Einstein gravity, the only degrees of freedom propagated on the vacuum are those of the standard graviton.

Thermalon mediated phase transitions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Thermalons can mediate phase transitions between different vacua in higher curvature gravity, potentially changing the asymptotic structure of the spacetime. Treating the cosmological constant as a dynamical parameter, we study these phase transitions in the context of extended thermodynamic phase space. We find that in addition to the AdS to dS phase transitions previously studied, thermal AdS space can undergo a phase transition to an asymptotically flat black hole geometry. In the context of AdS to AdS transitions, we comment on the similarities and differences between thermalon transitions and the Hawking-Page transition.

P-V Criticality in Quasitopological Gravity

We investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of AdS quasitopological black hole solutions in the context of extended thermodynamic phase space, in which the cosmological constant induces a pressure with a conjugate volume. We find that the third order exact quasitopological solution exhibits features consistent with the third order Lovelock solutions for positive quasitopological coupling, including multiple reentrant phase transitions and isolated critical points. For negative coupling we find the first instances of both reentrant phase transitions and thermodynamic singularities in five dimensions, along with other modified thermodynamic behaviour compared to Einstein-AdS-Gauss Bonnet gravity.

Reentrant phase transitions and van der Waals behaviour for hairy black holes

We study the extended phase space thermodynamics for hairy AdS black hole solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-$Λ$ theory conformally coupled to a scalar field in five dimensions. We find these solutions to exhibit van der Waals behaviour in both the charged/uncharged cases, and reentrant phase transitions in the charged case. This is the first example of reentrant phase transitions in a five dimensional gravitational system which does not include higher curvature corrections.

Ultraspinning limits and rotating hyperboloid membranes

We apply the hyperboloid membrane limit to the general Kerr-AdS metrics and their recently studied super-entropic cousins and obtain a new class of rotating black holes, for which the rotational parameters in multiple directions attain their maximal value---equal to the AdS radius. These new solutions have a potential application in the description of holographic fluids with vorticity. They also possess interesting thermodynamic properties: we show that---despite the absence of Misner strings---the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy/area law is still violated, raising a question about the origin of this violation.

Ultraspinning limits and super-entropic black holes

By employing the new ultraspinning limit we construct novel classes of black holes with non-compact event horizons and finite horizon area and study their thermodynamics. Our ultraspinning limit can be understood as a simple generating technique that consists of three steps: i) transforming the known rotating AdS black hole solution to a special coordinate system that rotates (in a given 2-plane) at infinity ii) boosting this rotation to the speed of light iii) compactifying the corresponding azimuthal direction. In so doing we qualitatively change the structure of the spacetime since it is no longer possible to return to a frame that does not rotate at infinity. The obtained black holes have non-compact horizons with topology of a sphere with two punctures. The entropy of some of these exceeds the maximal bound implied by the reverse isoperimetric inequality, such black holes are super-entropic.

Super-Entropic Black Holes

We construct a new class of rotating AdS black hole solutions with non-compact event horizons of finite area in any dimension and study their thermodynamics. In four dimensions these black holes are solutions to gauged supergravity. We find that their entropy exceeds the maximum implied from the conjectured Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality, which states that for a given thermodynamic volume, the black hole entropy is maximized for Schwarzschild-AdS. We use this result to suggest more stringent conditions under which this conjecture may hold.
