Multigaps superconductivity at unconventional Lifshitz transition in a 3D Rashba heterostructure at atomic limit

It is well known that the critical temperature of multi-gap superconducting 3D heterostructures at atomic limit (HAL) made of a superlattice of atomic layers with an electron spectrum made of several quantum subbands can be amplified by a shape resonance driven by the contact exchange interaction between different gaps. The $T_C$ amplification is achieved tuning the Fermi level near the singular nodal point at a Lifshitz transition for opening a neck. Recently high interest has been addressed to the breaking of inversion symmetry which leads to a linear-in-momentum spin-orbit induced spin splitting, universally referred to as Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) also in 3D layered metals. However the physics of multi-gap superconductivity near unconventional Lifshitz transitions in 3D HAL with RSOC, being in a non-BCS regime, is not known. The key result of this work getting the superconducting gaps by Bogoliubov theory and the 3D electron wave functions by solution of the Dirac equation is the feasibility of tuning multi-gap superconductivity by suitably matching the spin-orbit length with the 3D superlattice period. It is found that the presence of the RSOC amplifies both the k dependent anisotropic gap function and the critical temperature when the Fermi energy is tuned near the circular nodal line. Our results suggest a method to effectively vary the effect of RSOC on macroscopic superconductor condensates via the tuning of the superlattice modulation parameter in a way potentially relevant for spintronics functionalities in several existing experimental platforms and tunable materials needed for quantum devices for quantum computing.

Spin-charge coupling effects in a two-dimensional electron gas

In these lecture notes we study the disordered two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, by using the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function technique. We describe the effects of the spin-orbit coupling in terms of a SU(2) gauge field and derive a generalized Boltzmann equation for the charge and spin distribution functions. We then apply the formalism to discuss the spin Hall and the inverse spin galvanic (Edelstein) effects. Successively we show how to include, within the generalized Boltzmann equation, the side jump, the skew scattering and the spin current swapping processes originating from the extrinsic spin-orbit coupling due to impurity scattering.

The Edelstein effect in the presence of impurity spin-orbit scattering

In this paper we study the current-induced spin polarization in a two-dimensional electron gas, known also as the Edelstein effect. Compared to previous treatments, we consider both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction as well as the spin-orbit interaction from impurity scattering. In evaluating the Kubo formula for the spin polarization response to an applied electric field, we explicitly take into account the side-jump and skew-scattering effects. We show that the inclusion of side-jump and skew-scattering modifies the expression of the current-induced spin polarization.

Intrinsic spin Hall effect in systems with striped spin-orbit coupling

The Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from structure inversion asymmetry couples spin and momentum degrees of freedom providing a suitable (and very intensively investigated) environment for spintronic effects and devices. Here we show that in the presence of strong disorder, non-homogeneity in the spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a finite spin Hall conductivity in contrast with the corresponding case of a homogeneous linear spin-orbit coupling. In particular, we examine the inhomogeneity arising from a striped structure for a two-dimensional electron gas, affecting both density and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We suggest that this situation can be realized at oxide interfaces with periodic top gating.

Spin Hall effects due to phonon skew scattering

A diversity of spin Hall effects in metallic systems is known to rely on Mott skew scattering. In this work its high-temperature counterpart, phonon skew scattering, which is expected to be of foremost experimental relevance, is investigated. In particular, the phonon skew scattering spin Hall conductivity is found to be practically $T$-independent for temperatures above the Debye temperature $T_D$. As a consequence, in Rashba-like systems a high-$T$ linear behavior of the spin Hall angle demonstrates the dominance of extrinsic spin-orbit scattering only if the intrinsic spin splitting is smaller than the temperature.

Spin polarization induced by an electric field in the presence of weak localization effects

We evaluate the spin polarization (Edelstein or inverse spin galvanic effect) and the spin Hall current induced by an applied electric field by including the weak localization corrections for a two-dimensional electron gas. We show that the weak localization effects yield logarithmic corrections to both the spin polarization conductivity relating the spin polarization and the electric field and to the spin Hall angle relating the spin and charge currents. The renormalization of both the spin polarization conductivity and the spin Hall angle combine to produce a zero correction to the total spin Hall conductivity as required by an exact identity. Suggestions for the experimental observation of the effect are given.

Current enhancement through a time dependent constriction in fractional topological insulators

We analyze the backscattering current induced by a time dependent constriction as a tool to probe fractional topological insulators. We demonstrate an enhancement of the total current for a fractional topological insulator induced by the dominant tunneling excitation, contrary to the decreasing present in the integer case for not too strong interactions. This feature allows to unambiguously identify fractional quasiparticles. Furthermore, the dominant tunneling processes, which may involve one or two quasiparticles depending on the interactions, can be clearly determined.

Interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms to the spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas

In order to describe correctly the interplay of extrinsic and intrinsic spin-orbit mechanisms to the spin Hall effect, it is necessary to consider different sources of spin relaxation. We take into account the spin relaxation time $τ_{DP}$ due to the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism as well as the Elliot-Yafet spin-relaxation time $τ_s$ due to the spin-orbit scattering from impurities. The total spin Hall conductivity depends crucially on the ratio $τ_s /τ_{DP}$.
