Color-kinematics duality from an algebra of superforms

Color-kinematics duality states that the kinematic numerators of the cubic tree-level Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes obey the same symmetry properties that the color factors obey due to the Jacobi identity. We present a novel strategy for deriving this duality, based on the differential forms on a superspace. This space of superforms carries a generalization of a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra (BV$^{\square}$ algebra). We show that the homotopy algebra of color-stripped Yang-Mills theory is obtained as a quotient of this space in which a subspace, which is an ideal `up to homotopy', is modded out. This algebra is a subsector of a BV$_{\infty}^{\square}$ algebra. Deriving the latter would provide a first-principle proof of color-kinematics duality from field theory.

Duality invariant string beta functions at two loops

We compute, for cosmological backgrounds, the $O(d,d;\mathbb{R})$ invariant beta functions for the sigma model of the bosonic string at two loops. This yields an independent first-principle derivation of the order $α'$ corrections to the cosmological target-space equations. To this end we revisit the quantum consistency of Tseytlin's duality invariant formulation of the worldsheet theory. While we confirm the absence of gravitational (and hence Lorentz) anomalies, our results show that the minimal subtraction scheme is not applicable, implying significant technical complications at higher loops. To circumvent these we then change gears and use the Polyakov action for cosmological backgrounds, applying a suitable perturbation scheme that, although not $O(d,d;\mathbb{R})$ invariant, allows one to efficiently determine the $O(d,d;\mathbb{R})$ invariant beta functions.

Gauge-invariant coefficients in perturbative quantum gravity

Heat kernel methods are useful for studying properties of quantum gravity. We recompute here the first three heat kernel coefficients in perturbative quantum gravity with cosmological constant to ascertain which ones are correctly reported in the literature. They correspond to the counterterms needed to renormalize the one-loop effective action in four dimensions. They may be evaluated at arbitrary dimensions $D$, in which case they identify only a subset of the divergences appearing in the effective action for $D\geq 6$. Generically, these coefficients depend on the gauge-fixing choice adopted in quantizing the Einstein-Hilbert action. However, they become gauge-invariant once evaluated on-shell, i.e. using Einstein's field equations with cosmological constant. We identify them and use them as a benchmark for checking alternative approaches to perturbative quantum gravity. One such approach describes the graviton in first-quantization through the use of the action of the ${\cal N}=4$ spinning particle, characterized by four supersymmetries on the worldline and a set of worldline gauge invariances. This description has been used for computing the gauge-invariant coefficients as well. We verify their correctness at $D=4$, but find a mismatch at arbitrary $D$ when comparing with the benchmark fixed earlier. We interpret this result as signaling that the path integral quantization of the ${\cal N}=4$ spinning particle should be amended. We perform this task by fixing the correct counterterm that must be used in the worldline path integral quantization of the ${\cal N}=4$ spinning particle to make it consistent in arbitrary dimensions.

The Gauge Structure of Double Field Theory follows from Yang-Mills Theory

We show that to cubic order double field theory is encoded in Yang-Mills theory. To this end we use algebraic structures from string field theory as follows: The $L_{\infty}$-algebra of Yang-Mills theory is the tensor product ${\cal K}\otimes \mathfrak{g}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of the gauge group and a `kinematic algebra' ${\cal K}$ that is a $C_{\infty}$-algebra. This structure induces a cubic truncation of an $L_{\infty}$-algebra on the subspace of level-matched states of the tensor product ${\cal K}\otimes \bar{\cal K}$ of two copies of the kinematic algebra. This $L_{\infty}$-algebra encodes double field theory. More precisely, this construction relies on a particular form of the Yang-Mills $L_{\infty}$-algebra following from string field theory or from the quantization of a suitable worldline theory.

One-loop quantum gravity from the N=4 spinning particle

We construct a spinning particle that reproduces the propagation of the graviton on those curved backgrounds which solve the Einstein equations, with or without cosmological constant, i.e. Einstein manifolds. It is obtained by modifying the N=4 supersymmetric spinning particle by relaxing the gauging of the full SO(4) R-symmetry group to a parabolic subgroup, and selecting suitable Chern-Simons couplings on the worldline. We test it by computing the correct one-loop divergencies of quantum gravity in D=4.

A Worldline Theory for Supergravity

The $\cal{N}=4$ supersymmetric spinning particle admits several consistent quantizations, related to the gauging of different subgroups of the $SO(4)$ $R$-symmetry on the worldline. We construct the background independent BRST quantization for all of these choices which are shown to reproduce either the massless NS-NS spectrum of the string, or Einstein theory with or without the antisymmetric tensor field and/or dilaton corresponding to different restrictions. Quantum consistency of the worldline implies equations of motion for the background which, in addition to the admissible string backgrounds, admit Einstein manifolds with or whithout a cosmological constant. The vertex operators for the Kalb-Ramond, graviton and dilaton fields are obtained from the linear variations of the BRST charge. They produce the physical states by action on the diffeomorphism ghost states.

Leibniz Gauge Theories and Infinity Structures

We formulate gauge theories based on Leibniz(-Loday) algebras and uncover their underlying mathematical structure. Various special cases have been developed in the context of gauged supergravity and exceptional field theory. These are based on `tensor hierarchies', which describe towers of $p$-form gauge fields transforming under non-abelian gauge symmetries and which have been constructed up to low levels. Here we define `infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebras' that guarantee the existence of consistent tensor hierarchies to arbitrary level. We contrast these algebras with strongly homotopy Lie algebras ($L_{\infty}$ algebras), which can be used to define topological field theories for which all curvatures vanish. Any infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebra carries an associated $L_{\infty}$ algebra, which we discuss.

Action principles for higher and fractional spin gravities

We review various off-shell formulations for interacting higher-spin systems in dimensions 3 and 4. Associated with higher-spin systems in spacetime dimension 4 is a Chern-Simons action for a superconnection taking its values in a direct product of an infinite-dimensional algebra of oscillators and a Frobenius algebra. A crucial ingredient of the model is that it elevates the rigid closed and central two-form of Vasiliev's theory to a dynamical 2-form and doubles the higher-spin algebra, thereby considerably reducing the number of possible higher spin invariants and giving a nonzero effective functional on-shell. The two action principles we give for higher-spin systems in 3D are based on Chern-Simons and BF models. In the first case, the theory we give unifies higher-spin gauge fields with fractional-spin fields and an internal sector. In particular, Newton's constant is related to the coupling constant of the internal sector. In the second case, the BF action we review gives the fully nonlinear Prokushkin-Vasiliev, bosonic equations for matter-coupled higher spins in 3D. We present the truncation to a single, real matter field relevant in the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar holographic duality. The link between the various actions we present is the fact that they all borrow ingredients from Topological Field Theory. It has bee conjectured that there is an underlying and unifying 2-dimensional first-quantised description of the previous higher-spin models in 3D and 4D, in the form of a Cattaneo-Felder-like topological action containing fermionic fields.

An Action for Matter Coupled Higher Spin Gravity in Three Dimensions

We propose a covariant Hamiltonian action for the Prokushkin and Vasiliev's matter coupled higher spin gravity in three dimensions. The action is formulated on ${\cal X}_4 \times {\cal Z}_2$ where ${\cal X}_4$ is an open manifold whose boundary contains spacetime and ${\cal Z}_2$ is a noncommutative twistor space. We examine various consistent truncations to models of BF type in ${\cal X}_4$ and ${\cal Z}_2$ with B$^2$ terms and central elements. They are obtained by integrating out the matter fields in the presence of a vacuum expectation value $ν\in \mathbb{R}$ for the zero-form master field. For $ν=0$, we obtain a model on ${\cal X}_4$ containing Blencowe's action and a model on ${\cal Z}_2$ containing the Prokushkin--Segal--Vasiliev action. For generic $ν$ (including $ν=0$), we propose an alternative model on ${\cal X}_4$ with gauge fields in the Weyl algebra of Wigner's deformed oscillator algebra and Lagrange multipliers in the algebra of operators acting in the Fock representation space of the deformed oscillators.

2D Poisson Sigma Models with Gauged Vectorial Supersymmetry

In this note, we gauge the rigid vectorial supersymmetry of the two-dimensional Poisson sigma model presented in arXiv:1503.05625. We show that the consistency of the construction does not impose any further constraints on the differential Poisson algebra geometry than those required for the ungauged model. We conclude by proposing that the gauged model provides a first-quantized framework for higher spin gravity.

A worldline approach to colored particles

Relativistic particle actions are a useful tool to describe quantum field theory effective actions using a string-inspired first-quantized approach. Here we describe how to employ suitable particle actions in the computation of the scalar contribution to the one-loop gluon effective action. We use the well-known method of introducing auxiliary variables that create the color degrees of freedom. In a path integral they implement automatically the path ordering needed to ensure gauge invariance. It is known that the color degrees of freedom introduced this way form a reducible representation of the gauge group. We describe a method of projecting onto the fundamental representation (or any other chosen irrep, if desired) of the gauge group. Previously, we have discussed the case of anticommuting auxiliary variables. Choosing them to be in the fundamental representation allows to obtain, without any extra effort, also the situation in which the color is given by any antisymmetric tensor product of the fundamental. Here, we describe the novel case of bosonic auxiliary variables. They can be used equivalently for creating the color charges in the fundamental representation. In addition one gets, as a byproduct, the cases where the particle can have the color sitting in any symmetric tensor product of the fundamental. This is obtained by tuning to a different value a Chern Simons coupling, present in the model, which controls how the projection is achieved.

Effective action for higher spin fields on (A)dS backgrounds

We study the one loop effective action for a class of higher spin fields by using a first-quantized description. The latter is obtained by considering spinning particles, characterized by an extended local supersymmetry on the worldline, that can propagate consistently on conformally flat spaces. The gauge fixing procedure for calculating the worldline path integral on a loop is delicate, as the gauge algebra contains nontrivial structure functions. Restricting the analysis on (A)dS backgrounds simplifies the gauge fixing procedure, and allows us to produce a useful representation of the one loop effective action. In particular, we extract the first few heat kernel coefficients for arbitrary even spacetime dimension D and for spin S identified by a curvature tensor with the symmetries of a rectangular Young tableau of D/2 rows and [S] columns.

Graviton self-energy from worldlines

Worldline approaches, when available, often simplify and make more efficient the calculation of various observables in quantum field theories. In this contribution we first review the calculation of the graviton self-energy due to a loop of virtual particles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1, all of which have a well-known worldline description. For the case of the graviton itself, an elegant worldline description is still missing, though one can still describe it by constructing a worldline representation of the differential operators that arise in the quadratic approximation of the Einstein-Hilbert action. We have recently analyzed the latter approach, and we use it here to calculate the one-loop graviton self energy due to the graviton itself in this formalism.

Spinning particles and higher spin field equations

Relativistic particles with higher spin can be described in first quantization using actions with local supersymmetry on the worldline. First, we present a brief review of these actions and their use in first quantization. In a Dirac quantization scheme the field equations emerge as Dirac constraints on the Hilbert space, and we outline how they lead to the description of higher spin fields in terms of the more standard Fronsdal-Labastida equations. Then, we describe how these actions can be extended so that the propagating particle is allowed to take different values of the spin, i.e. carry a reducible representation of the Poincaré group. This way one may identify a four dimensional model that carries the same degrees of freedom of the minimal Vasiliev's interacting higher spin field theory. Extensions to massive particles and to propagation on (A)dS spaces are also briefly commented upon.

preprint2014arXiv

Massive and massless higher spinning particles in odd dimensions

We study actions for massive bosonic particles of higher spins by dimensionally reducing an action for massless particles. For the latter we take a model with a SO(N) extended local supersymmetry on the worldline, that is known to describe massless (conformal) particles of higher spins in flat spacetimes of even dimensions. Dimensional reduction produces an action for massive spinning particles in odd dimensions. The field equations that emerge in a quantization a la Dirac are shown to be equivalent to the Fierz-Pauli ones. The massless limit generates a multiplet of massless states with higher spins, whose first quantized field equations have a geometric form with fields belonging to various types of Young tableaux. These geometric equations can be partially integrated to show their equivalence with the standard Fronsdal-Labastida equations. We covariantize our model to check whether an extension to curved spacetimes can be achieved. Restricting to (A)dS spaces, we find that the worldline gauge algebra becomes nonlinear, but remains first class. This guarantees consistency on such backgrounds. A light cone analysis confirms the presence of the expected propagating degrees of freedom. A covariant analysis is worked out explicitly for the massive case, which is seen to give rise to the Fierz-Pauli equations extended to (A)dS spaces. It is worth noting that in D=3 the massless limit of our model when N goes to infinity has the same field content of the Vasiliev's theory that accommodates each spin exactly once.

One-loop quantum gravity from a worldline viewpoint

We develop a worldline approach to quantum gravity in D=4. Using the background field method we consider the covariantly gauge fixed Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant, and find a worldline representation of the differential operators identified by its quadratic approximation. We test it by computing the correct one-loop divergencies. Alternative worldline methods, such as the use of the O(4) spinning particle that is known to describe correctly the propagation of a massless spin 2 particle in D=4, find obstructions in the coupling to an arbitrary background metric, apparently preventing a more extensive use in perturbative descriptions of quantum gravity. We expect that our model might simplify calculations of one-loop amplitudes with respect to standard quantum field theoretical methods.

Particles with non abelian charges

Efficient methods for describing non abelian charges in worldline approaches to QFT are useful to simplify calculations and address structural properties, as for example color/kinematics relations. Here we analyze in detail a method for treating arbitrary non abelian charges. We use Grassmann variables to take into account color degrees of freedom, which however are known to produce reducible representations of the color group. Then we couple them to a U(1) gauge field defined on the worldline, together with a Chern-Simons term, to achieve projection on an irreducible representation. Upon gauge fixing there remains a modulus, an angle parametrizing the U(1) Wilson loop, whose dependence is taken into account exactly in the propagator of the Grassmann variables. We test the method in simple examples, the scalar and spin 1/2 contribution to the gluon self energy, and suggest that it might simplify the analysis of more involved amplitudes.

Quantum theories of (p,q)-forms

We describe quantum theories for massless (p,q)-forms living on Kaehler spaces. In particular we consider four different types of quantum theories: two types involve gauge symmetries and two types are simpler theories without gauge invariances. The latter can be seen as building blocks of the former. Their equations of motion can be obtained in a natural way by first-quantizing a spinning particle with a U(2)-extended supersymmetry on the worldline. The particle system contains four supersymmetric charges, represented quantum mechanically by the Dolbeault operators and their hermitian conjugates. After studying how the (p,q)-form field theories emerge from the particle system, we investigate their one loop effective actions, identify corresponding heat kernel coefficients, and derive exact duality relations. The dualities are seen to include mismatches related to topological indices and analytic torsions, which are computed as Tr(-1)^F and Tr[(-1)^F F] in the first quantized supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model for a suitable fermion number operator F.

U(N) spinning particles and higher spin fields on Kaehler backgrounds

In this short contribution we will review the quantization of U(N) spinning particles with complex target spaces, producing equations for higher spin fields on complex backgrounds. We will focus first on flat complex space, and subsequently discuss how to extend our model on suitable Kaehler manifolds. In the final section, we will specialize to (p,q)-forms on arbitrary Kaehler spaces and present their one-loop effective actions as well as issues related to Hodge duality.

Extended SUSY quantum mechanics: transition amplitudes and path integrals

Quantum mechanical models with extended supersymmetry find interesting applications in worldline approaches to relativistic field theories. In this paper we consider one-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with O(N) extended supersymmetry on the worldline, which are used in the study of higher spin fields on curved backgrounds. We calculate the transition amplitude for euclidean times (i.e. the heat kernel) in a perturbative expansion, using both canonical methods and path integrals. The latter are constructed using three different regularization schemes, and the corresponding counterterms that ensure scheme independence are explicitly identified.

Quantum theory of massless (p,0)-forms

We describe the quantum theory of massless (p,0)-forms that satisfy a suitable holomorphic generalization of the free Maxwell equations on Kaehler spaces. These equations arise by first-quantizing a spinning particle with a U(1)-extended local supersymmetry on the worldline. Dirac quantization of the spinning particle produces a physical Hilbert space made up of (p,0)-forms that satisfy holomorphic Maxwell equations coupled to the background Kaehler geometry, containing in particular a charge that measures the amount of coupling to the U(1) part of the U(d) holonomy group of the d-dimensional Kaehler space. The relevant differential operators appearing in these equations are a twisted exterior holomorphic derivative and its hermitian conjugate (twisted Dolbeault operators with charge q). The particle model is used to obtain a worldline representation of the one-loop effective action of the (p,0)-forms. This representation allows to compute the first few heat kernel coefficients contained in the local expansion of the effective action and to derive duality relations between (p,0) and (d-p-2,0)-forms that include a topological mismatch appearing at one-loop.

Gravity, Two Times, Tractors, Weyl Invariance and Six Dimensional Quantum Mechanics

Fefferman and Graham showed some time ago that four dimensional conformal geometries could be analyzed in terms of six dimensional, ambient, Riemannian geometries admitting a closed homothety. Recently it was shown how conformal geometry provides a description of physics manifestly invariant under local choices of unit systems. Strikingly, Einstein's equations are then equivalent to the existence of a parallel scale tractor (a six component vector subject to a certain first order covariant constancy condition at every point in four dimensional spacetime). These results suggest a six dimensional description of four dimensional physics, a viewpoint promulgated by the two times physics program of Bars. The Fefferman--Graham construction relies on a triplet of operators corresponding, respectively to a curved six dimensional light cone, the dilation generator and the Laplacian. These form an sp(2) algebra which Bars employs as a first class algebra of constraints in a six-dimensional gauge theory. In this article four dimensional gravity is recast in terms of six dimensional quantum mechanics by melding the two times and tractor approaches. This "parent" formulation of gravity is built from an infinite set of six dimensional fields. Successively integrating out these fields yields various novel descriptions of gravity including a new four dimensional one built from a scalar doublet, a tractor vector multiplet and a conformal class of metrics.

Local Unit Invariance, Back-Reacting Tractors and the Cosmological Constant Problem

When physics is expressed in a way that is independent of local choices of unit systems, Riemannian geometry is replaced by conformal geometry. Moreover masses become geometric, appearing as Weyl weights of tractors (conformal multiplets of fields necessary to keep local unit invariance manifest). The relationship between these weights and masses is through the scalar curvature. As a consequence mass terms are spacetime dependent for off-shell gravitational backgrounds, but happily constant for physical, Einstein manifolds. Unfortunately this introduces a naturalness problem because the scalar curvature is proportional to the cosmological constant. By writing down tractor stress tensors (multiplets built from the standard stress tensor and its first and second derivatives), we show how back-reaction solves this naturalness problem. We also show that classical back-reaction generates an interesting potential for scalar fields. We speculate that a proper description of how physical systems couple to scale, could improve our understanding of naturalness problems caused by the disparity between the particle physics and observed, cosmological constants. We further give some ideas how an ambient description of tractor calculus could lead to a Ricci-flat/CFT correspondence which generalizes the AdS side of Maldacena's duality to a Ricci-flat space of one higher dimension.

U(N|M) quantum mechanics on Kaehler manifolds

We study the extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics, with supercharges transforming in the fundamental representation of U(N|M), as realized in certain one-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with Kaehler manifolds as target space. We discuss the symmetry algebra characterizing these models and, using operatorial methods, compute the heat kernel in the limit of short propagation time. These models are relevant for studying the quantum properties of a certain class of higher spin field equations in first quantization.

Mode Regularization for N=1,2 SUSY Sigma Model

Worldline N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric sigma models in curved background are useful to describe spin one-half and spin one particles coupled to external gravity, respectively. It is well known that worldline path integrals in curved space require regularization: we present here the mode-regularization for these models, finding in particular the corresponding counterterms, both in the case of flat and curved indices for worldline fermions. For N=1, using curved indices we find a contribution to the counterterm from the fermions that cancels the contribution of the bosons, leading to a vanishing total counterterm and thus preserving the covariance and supersymmetry of the classical action. Conversely in the case of N=2 supersymmetries we obtain a non-covariant counterterm with both curved and flat indices. This work completes the analysis of the known regularization schemes for N=1,2 nonlinear sigma models in one dimension.
