Kähler-Einstein metrics and Archimedean zeta functions

While the existence of a unique Kähler-Einstein metric on a canonically polarized manifold X was established by Aubin and Yau already in the 70s there are only a few explicit formulas available. In previous work a probabilistic construction of the Kähler-Einstein metric was introduced - involving canonical random point processes on X - which yields canonical approximations of the Kähler-Einstein metric, expressed as explicit period integrals over a large number of products of X. Here it is shown that the conjectural extension to the case when X is a Fano variety suggests a zero-free property of the Archimedean zeta functions defined by the partition functions of the probabilistic model. A weaker zero-free property is also shown to be relevant for the Calabi-Yau equation. The convergence in the case of log Fano curves is settled, exploiting relations to the complex Selberg integral in the orbifold case. Some intriguing relations to the zero-free property of the local automorphic L-functions appearing in the Langlands program and arithmetic geometry are also pointed out. These relations also suggest a natural p-adic extension of the probabilistic approach.

Measure preserving holomorphic vector fields, invariant anti-canonical divisors and Gibbs stability

Let X be a compact complex manifold whose anti-canonical line bundle is big. We show that X admits no non-trivial holomorphic vector fields if it is Gibbs stable (at any level). The proof is based on a vanishing result for measure preserving holomorphic vector fields on X of independent interest. As an application it shown that, in general, if the anti-canonical line bundle is big, there are no holomorphic vector fields on X that are tangent to a non-singular irreducible anti-canonical divisor S on X. More generally, the result holds for varieties with log terminal singularities and log pairs. Relations to a result of Berndtsson about generalized Hamiltonians and coercivity of the quantized Ding functional are also pointed out.

An invitation to Kähler-Einstein metrics and random point processes

This is an invitation to the probabilistic approach for constructing Kähler-Einstein metrics on complex projective algebraic manifolds X. The metrics in question emerge in the large N-limit from a canonical way of sampling N points on X, i.e. from random point processes on X, defined in terms of algebro-geometric data. The proof of the convergence towards Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative Ricci curvature is explained. In the case of positive Ricci curvature a variational approach is introduced to prove the conjectural convergence, which can be viewed as a probabilistic constructive analog of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture. The variational approach reveals, in particular, that the convergence holds under the hypothesis that there is no phase transition, which - from the algebro-geometric point of view - amounts to an analytic property of a certain Archimedean zeta function.

Conical Calabi-Yau metrics on toric affine varieties and convex cones

It is shown that any affine toric variety Y, which is Q-Gorenstein, admits a conical Ricci flat Kahler metric, which is smooth on the regular locus of Y. The corresponding Reeb vector is the unique minimizer of the volume functional on the Reeb cone of Y. The case when the vertex point of Y is an isolated singularity was previously shown by Futaki-Ono-Wang. The proof is based on an existence result for the inhomogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in real Euclidean space with exponential right hand side and prescribed target given by a proper convex convex, combined with transversal a priori estimates on Y.

Convergence rates for discretized Monge-Ampère equations and quantitative stability of optimal transport

In recent works - both experimental and theoretical - it has been shown how to use computational geometry to efficently construct approximations to the optimal transport map between two given probability measures on Euclidean space, by discretizing one of the measures. Here we provide a quantative convergence analysis for the solutions of the corresponding discretized Monge-Ampère equations. This yields L^{2}-converge rates, in terms of the corresponding spatial resolution h, of the discrete approximations of the optimal transport map, when the source measure is discretized and the target measure has bounded convex support. Periodic variants of the results are also established. The proofs are based on quantitative stability results for optimal transport maps, shown using complex geometry.

Emergent Sasaki-Einstein geometry and AdS/CFT

We consider supergravity in five-dimensional Anti-De Sitter space $AdS_{5}$ with minimal supersymmetry, encoded by a Sasaki-Einstein metric on a five-dimensional compact manifold $M$. Our main result reveals how the Sasaki-Einstein metric emerges from a canonical state in the dual CFT, defined by a superconformal gauge theory in four dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$in the t'Hooft limit where the rank $N$ tends to infinity. We obtain explicit finite $N-$approximations to the Sasaki-Einstein metric, expressed in terms of a canonical (i.e. background free) BPS-state on the gauge theory side. We also provide a string theory interpretation of the BPS-state in question, which sheds new light on the previously noted intriguing duality of giant gravitons.

The Sinkhorn algorithm, parabolic optimal transport and geometric Monge-Ampère equations

We show that the discrete Sinkhorn algorithm - as applied in the setting of Optimal Transport on a compact manifold - converges to the solution of a fully non-linear parabolic PDE of Monge-Ampere type, in a large-scale limit. The latter evolution equation has previously appeared in different contexts (e.g. on the torus it can be be identified with the Ricci flow). This leads to algorithmic approximations of the potential of the Optimal Transport map, as well as the Optimal Transport distance, with explicit bounds on the arithmetic complexity of the construction and the approximation errors. As applications we obtain explicit schemes of nearly linear complexity, at each iteration, for optimal transport on the torus and the two-sphere, as well as the far-field antenna problem. Connections to Quasi-Monte Carlo methods are exploited.

Determinantal point processes and fermions on complex manifolds: Bulk universality

We consider determinantal point processes on a compact complex manifold X in the limit of many particles. The correlation kernels of the processes are the Bergman kernels associated to a a high power of a given Hermitian holomorphic line bundle L over X. The empirical measure on X of the process, describing the particle locations, converges in probability towards the pluripotential equilibrium measure, expressed in term of the Monge-Ampère operator. The asymptotics of the corresponding fluctuations in the bulk are shown to be asymptotically normal and described by a Gaussian free field and applies to test functions (linear statistics) which are merely Lipschitz continuous. Moreover, a scaling limit of the correlation functions in the bulk is shown to be universal and expressed in terms of (the higher dimensional analog of) the Ginibre ensemble. This geometric setting applies in particular to normal random matrix ensembles, the two dimensional Coulomb gas, free fermions in a strong magnetic field and multivariate orthogonal polynomials.

From the Kähler-Ricci flow to moving free boundaries and shocks

We show that the twisted Kähler-Ricci flow on a complex manifold X converges to a flow of moving free boundaries, in a certain scaling limit. This leads to a new phenomenon of singularity formation and topology change which can be seen as a complex generalization of the extensively studied formation of shocks in Hamilton-Jacobi equations and hyperbolic conservation laws (notably, in the adhesion model in cosmology). In particular we show how to recover the Hele-Shaw flow (Laplacian growth) of growing 2D domains from the Ricci flow. As we briefly indicate the scaling limit in question arises as the zero-temperature limit of a certain many particle system on X.

Kähler-Einstein metrics and the Kähler-Ricci flow on log Fano varieties

We prove the existence and uniqueness of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Q-Fano varieties with log terminal singularities (and more generally on log Fano pairs) whose Mabuchi functional is proper. We study analogues of the works of Perelman on the convergence of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow, and of Keller, Rubinstein on its discrete version, Ricci iteration. In the special case of (non-singular) Fano manifolds, our results on Ricci iteration yield smooth convergence without any additional condition, improving on previous results. Our result for the Kähler-Ricci flow provides weak convergence independently of Perelman's celebrated estimates.

Kähler-Einstein metrics on stable varieties and log canonical pairs

Let $X$ be a canonically polarized variety, i.e. a complex projective variety such that its canonical class $K_{X}$ defines an ample $\Q-$line bundle, and satisfying the conditions $G_1$ and $S_2$. Our main result says that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ has semi-log canonical singularities i.e. iff $X$ is a stable variety in the sense of Kollár-Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev (whose moduli spaces are known to be compact). By definition a Kähler-Einstein metric in this singular context simply means a Kähler-Einstein on the regular locus of $X$ with volume equal to the algebraic volume of $K_{X},$ i.e. the top intersection number of $K_{X}.$ We also show that such a metric is uniquely determined and extends to define a canonical positive current in $c_{1}(K_{X}).$ Combined with recent results of Odaka our main result shows that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ is K-stable, which thus confirms the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this general setting of (possibly singular) canonically polarized varieties. More generally, our results are shown to hold in the setting of log minimal varieties and they also generalize some prior results concerning Kähler-Einstein metrics on quasi-projective varieties.

Kahler-Einstein metrics, canonical random point processes and birational geometry

In the present paper and the companion paper [8] a probabilistic (statistical mechanical) approach to the study of canonical metrics and measures on a complex algebraic variety X is introduced. On any such variety with positive Kodaira dimension a canonical (birationally invariant) random point processes is defined and shown to converge in probability towards a canonical deterministic measure on X, coinciding with the canonical measure of Song-Tian and Tsuji. The proof is based on new large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians which relies on an asymptotic submean inequality in large dimensions, proved in a companion paper. In the case of a variety X of general type we obtain as a corollary that the (possibly singular) Kähler-Einstein metric on X with negative Ricci curvature is the limit of a canonical sequence of quasi-explicit Bergman type metrics. In the opposite setting of a Fano variety X we relate the canonical point processes to a new notion of stability, that we call Gibbs stability, which admits a natural algebro-geometric formulation and which we conjecture is equivalent to the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric on X and hence to K-stability as in the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture.

On large deviations for Gibbs measures, mean energy and Gamma-convergence

We consider the random point processes on a measure space X defined by the Gibbs measures associated to a given sequence of N-particle Hamiltonians H^{(N)}. Inspired by the method of Messer-Spohn for proving concentration properties for the laws of the corresponding empirical measures, we propose a number of hypotheses on H^{(N)} which are quite general, but still strong enough to extend the approach of Messer-Spohn. The hypotheses are formulated in terms of the asymptotics of the corresponding mean energy functionals. We show that in many situations the approach even yields a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for the corresponding laws. Connections to Gamma-convergence of (free) energy type functionals at different levels are also explored. The focus is on differences between positive and negative temperature situations, motivated by applications to complex geometry. The results yield, in particular, large deviation principles at positive as well as negative temperatures for quite general classes of singular mean field models with pair interactions, generalizing the 2D vortex model and Coulomb gases. In a companion paper the results are illustrated in the setting of Coulomb and Riesz type gases on a Riemannian manifold X, comparing with the complex geometric setting.

Propagation of chaos for a class of first order models with singular mean field interactions

Dynamical systems of N particles in \R^{D} interacting by a singular pair potential of mean field type are considered. The systems are assumed to be of gradient type and the existence of a macroscopic limit in the many particle limit is established for a large class of singular interaction potentials in the stochastic as well as the deterministic settings. The main assumption on the potentials is an appropriate notion of quasi-convexity. When D=1 the convergence result is sharp when applied to strongly singular repulsive interactions and for a general dimension D the result applies to attractive interactions with Lipschitz singular interaction potentials, leading to stochastic particle solutions to the corresponding macroscopic aggregation equations. The proof uses the theory of gradient flows in Wasserstein spaces of Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaree.

preprint2016arXiv

Propagation of chaos, Wasserstein gradient flows and toric Kahler-Einstein metrics

Motivated by a probabilistic approach to Kahler-Einstein metrics we consider a general non-equilibrium statistical mechanics model in Euclidean space consisting of the stochastic gradient flow of a given (possibly singular) quasi-convex N-particle interaction energy. We show that a deterministic "macroscopic" evolution equation emerges in the large N-limit of many particles. This is a strengthening of previous results which required a uniform two-sided bound on the Hessian of the interaction energy. The proof uses the theory of weak gradient flows on the Wasserstein space. Applied to the setting of permanental point processes at "negative temperature" the corresponding limiting evolution equation yields a drift-diffusion equation, coupled to the Monge-Ampere operator, whose static solutions correspond to toric Kahler-Einstein metrics. This drift-diffusion equation is the gradient flow on the Wasserstein space of probability measures of the K-energy functional in Kahler geometry and it can be seen as a fully non-linear version of various extensively studied dissipative evolution equations and conservations laws, including the Keller-Segel equation and Burger's equation. We also obtain a real probabilistic (and tropical) analog of the complex geometric Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this setting. In a companion paper applications to singular pair interactions are given.

Convexity of the K-energy on the space of Kahler metrics and uniqueness of extremal metrics

We establish the convexity of Mabuchi's K-energy functional along weak geodesics in the space of Kahler potentials on a compact Kahler manifold thus confirming a conjecture of Chen and give some applications in Kahler geometry, including a proof of the uniqueness of constant scalar curvature metrics (or more generally extremal metrics) modulo automorphisms. The key ingredient is a new local positivity property of weak solutions to the homogenuous Monge-Ampere equation on a product domain, whose proof uses plurisubharmonic variation of Bergman kernels.

K-polystability of Q-Fano varieties admitting Kahler-Einstein metrics

It is shown that any, possibly singular, Fano variety X admitting a Kahler-Einstein metric is K-polystable, thus confirming one direction of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in the setting of Q-Fano varieties equipped with their anti-canonical polarization. The proof exploits convexity properties of the Ding functional along weak geodesic rays in the space of all bounded positively curved metrics on the anti-canonical line bundle of X and also gives a new proof in the non-singular case. One consequence is that a toric Fano variety X is K-polystable iff it is K-polystable along toric degenerations iff 0 is the barycenter of the canonical weight polytope P associated to X. The results also extend to the logarithmic setting and in particular to the setting of Kahler-Einstein metrics with edge-cone singularities. Furthermore, applications to geodesic stability, bounds on the Ricci potential and Perelman's entropy functional on K-unstable Fano manifolds are given.

Complex optimal transport and the pluripotential theory of Kähler-Ricci solitons

Let (X,L) be a (semi-) polarized complex projective variety and T a real torus acting holomorphically on X with moment polytope P. Given a probability density g on P we introduce a new type of Monge-Ampere measure on X, defined for singular T-invariant metrics on the line bundle L, generalizing the ordinary Monge-Ampere of global pluripotential theory, which corresponds to the case when T is trivial (or g=1). In the opposite extreme case when T has maximal rank, i.e. (X,L,T) is a toric variety, the solution of the corresponding Monge-Ampere equation with right hand side μcorresponds to the convex Kantorovich potential for the optimal transport map in the Monge-Kantorovich transport problem betweeen μand g (for a quadratic cost function). Accordingly, our general setting can be seen as a complex version of optimal transport theory. Our main complex geometric applications concern the pluripotential study of singular (shrinking) Kahler-Ricci solitons. In particular, we establish the uniqueness of such solitons, modulo automorphisms, and explore their relation to a notion of modified K-stability inspired by the work of Tian-Zhu. The quantization of this setup, in the sense of Donaldson, is also studied.

On the optimal regularity of weak geodesics in the space of metrics on a polarized manifold

Let (X,L) be a polarized compact manifold, i.e. L is an ample line bundle over X and denote by H the infinite dimensional space of all positively curved Hermitian metrics on L equipped with the Mabuchi metric. In this short note we show, using Bedford-Taylor type envelope techniques developed in the authors previous work [ber2], that Chen's weak geodesic connecting any two elements in H are C^{1,1}-smooth, i.e. the real Hessian is bounded, for any fixed time t, thus improving the original bound on the Laplacins due to Chen. This also gives a partial generalization of Blocki's refinement of Chen's regularity result. More generally, a regularity result for complex Monge-Ampere equations over X\timesD, for D a pseudconvex domain in \C^{n} is given.

Statistical mechanics of permanents, real-Monge-Ampere equations and optimal transport

We give a new probabilistic construction of solutions to real Monge-Ampère equations in R^n satisfying the second boundary value problem with respect to a given target convex body P) which fits naturally into the theory of optimal transport. More precisely, certain beta-deformed permanental (bosonic) N-particle point processes are introduced and their empirical measures are, in the large N-limit, shown to converge exponentially in probability to a deterministic measure whose potential satisfies the real Monge-Ampère equation in question. In particular, this allows us to represent the solution as a limit, as N tends to infinity of explicit integrals over the N-fold products of R^n and it also leads to explicit limit formulas for optimal transport maps to the convex body P. Connections to the study of Kähler-Einstein metrics on complex algebraic varieties, and in particular toric ones, are briefly discussed.

A thermodynamical formalism for Monge-Ampere equations, Moser-Trudinger inequalities and Kahler-Einstein metrics

We develop a variational calculus for a certain free energy functional on the space of all probability measures on a Kahler manifold X. This functional can be seen as a generalization of Mabuchi's K-energy functional and its twisted versions to more singular situations. Applications to Monge-Ampère equations of mean field type, twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics and Moser-Trudinger type inequalities on Kahler manifolds are given. Tian's α- invariant is generalized to singular measures, allowing i particular the construction of Kahler-Einstein metrics with positive Ricci curvature that are singular along a given anti-canonical divisor (as proposed in a very recent program of Donaldson). As another application we show that if the Calabi flow in the (anti-) canonical class exits for all times then it converges to a Kahler-Einstein metric, when one exists. Applications to the probabilistic/statistical mechanical approach to the construction of Kahler-Einstein metrics, very recently introduced by the author, will appear elsewhere.

preprint2012arXiv

Real Monge-Ampere equations and Kahler-Ricci solitons on toric log Fano varieties

We show, using a direct variational approach, that the second boundary value problem for the Monge-Ampère equation in R^n with exponential non-linearity and target a convex body P is solvable iff 0 is the barycenter of P. Combined with some toric geometry this confirms, in particular, the (generalized) Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for toric log Fano varieties (X,D), saying that (X,D) admits a (singular) Kähler-Einstein metric iff it is K-stable in the algebro-geometric sense. We thus obtain a new proof and extend to the log Fano setting the seminal result of Zhou-Wang concerning the case when X is smooth and D is trivial. Li's toric formula for the greatest lower bound on the Ricci curvature is also generalized. More generally, we obtain Kähler-Ricci solitons on any log Fano variety and show that they appear as the large time limit of the Kähler-Ricci flow. Furthermore, using duality, we also confirm a conjecture of Donaldson concerning solutions to Abreu's boundary value problem on the convex body P. in the case of a given canonical measure on the boundary of P.

The volume of Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties and convex bodies

We show that the complex projective space has maximal degree (volume) among all n-dimensional Kahler-Einstein Fano manifolds admitting a holomorphic C^*-action with a finite number of fixed points. The toric version of this result, translated to the realm of convex geometry, thus confirms Ehrhart's volume conjecture for a large class of rational polytopes, including duals of lattice polytopes. The case of spherical varieties/multiplicity free symplectic manifolds is also discussed. The proof uses Moser-Trudinger type inequalities for Stein domains and also leads to criticality results for mean field type equations in C^n of independent interest. The paper supersedes our previous preprint concerning the case of toric Fano manifolds.

Determinantal point processes and fermions on complex manifolds: large deviations and bosonization

We study determinantal random point processes on a compact complex manifold X associated to an Hermitian metric on a line bundle over X and a probability measure on X. Physically, this setup describes a free fermion gas on X subject to a U(1)- gauge field and when X is the Riemann sphere it specializes to various random matrix ensembles. It is shown that, in the many particle limit, the empirical random measures on X converge exponentially towards the deterministic pluripotential equilibrium measure, defined in terms of the Monge-Ampere operator of complex pluripotential theory. More precisely, a large deviation principle (LDP) is established with a good rate functional. We also express the LDP in terms of the Ray-Singer analytic torsion and the exponentially small eigenvalues of dbar-Laplacians. This can be seen as an effective bosonization formula, generalizing the previously known formula in the Riemann surface case to higher dimensions and the paper is concluded with a heuristic quantum field theory intepretation of the resulting effective boson-fermion correspondence.

Kahler-Einstein metrics emerging from free fermions and statistical mechanics

We propose a statistical mechanical derivation of Kahler-Einstein metrics, i.e. solutions to Einstein's vacuum field equations in Euclidean signature (with a cosmological constant) on a compact Kahler manifold X. The microscopic theory is given by a canonical free fermion gas on X whose one-particle states are pluricanonical holomorphic sections on X (coinciding with higher spin states in the case of a Riemann surface). A heuristic, but hopefully physically illuminating, argument for the convergence in the thermodynamical (large N) limit is given, based on a recent mathematically rigorous result about exponentially small fluctuations of Slater determinants. Relations to effective bosonization and the Yau-Tian-Donaldson program in Kahler geometry are pointed out. The precise mathematical details will be investigated elsewhere.

Moser-Trudinger type inequalities for complex Monge-Ampère operators and Aubin's "hypothèse fondamentale"

We prove Aubin's "Hypothese fondamentale" concerning the existence of Moser-Trudinger type inequalities on any integral compact Kähler manifold X. In the case of the anti-canonical class on a Fano manifold the constants in the inequalities are shown to only depend on the dimension of X (but there are counterexamples to the precise value proposed by Aubin). In the different setting of pseudoconvex domains in complex space we also obtain a quasi-sharp version of the inequalities and relate it to Brezis-Merle type inequalities. The inequalities are shown to be sharp for S^{1}-invariant functions on the unit-ball. We give applications to existence and blow-up of solutions to complex Monge-Ampère equations of mean field (Liouville) type.

Relative Kahler-Ricci flows and their quantization

Let X be a complex manifold fibered over the base S and let L be a relatively ample line bundle over X. We define relative Kahler-Ricci flows on the space of all Hermitian metrics on L with relatively positive curvature. Mainly three different settings are investigated: the case when the fibers are Calabi-Yau manifolds and the case when L is the relative (anti-) canonical line bundle. The main theme studied is whether posivity in families is preserved under the flows and its relation to the variation of the moduli of the complex structures of the fibres. The quantization of this setting is also studied, where the role of the Kahler-Ricci flow is played by Donaldson's iteration on the space of all Hermitian metrics on the finite rank vector bundle over S defined as the zeroth direct image induced by the fibration. Applications to the construction of canonical metrics on relative canonical bumdles and Weil-Petersson geometry are given. Some of the main results are a parabolic analogue of a recent elliptic equation of Schumacher and the convergence towards the Kähler-Ricci flow of Donaldson's iteration in a certain double scaling limit.

Sharp asymptotics for Toeplitz determinants, fluctuations and the gaussian free field on a Riemann surface

We consider canonical determinantal random point processes with N particles on a compact Riemann surface X defined with respect to the constant curvature metric. In the higher genus (hyperbolic) cases these point processes may be defined in terms of automorphic forms. We establish strong exponential concentration of measure type properties involving Dirichlet norms of linear statistics. This gives an optimal Central Limit Theorem (CLT), saying that the fluctuations of the corresponding empirical measures converge, in the large N limt, towards the Laplacian of the Gaussian free field on X in the strongest possible sense. The CLT is also shown to be equivalent to a new sharp strong Szegö type theorem for Toeplitz determinants in this context. One of the ingredients in the proofs are new Bergman kernel asymptotics providing exponentially small error terms in a constant curvature setting.

Analytic torsion, vortices and positive Ricci curvature

We characterize the global maximizers of a certain non-local functional defined on the space of all positively curved metrics on an ample line bundle L over a Kahler manifold X. This functional is an adjoint version, introduced by Berndtsson, of Donaldson's L-functional and generalizes the Ding-Tian functional whose critical points are Kahler-Einstein metrics of positive Ricci curvature. Applications to (1) analytic torsions on Fano manifolds (2) Chern-Simons-Higgs vortices on tori and (3) Kahler geometry are given. In particular, proofs of conjectures of (1) Gillet-Soulé and Fang (concerning the regularized determinant of Dolbeault Laplacians on the two-sphere) (2) Tarantello and (3) Aubin (concerning Moser-Trudinger type inequalities) in these three settings are obtained. New proofs of some results in Kahler geometry are also obtained, including a lower bound on Mabuchi's K-energy and the uniqueness result for Kahler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds of Bando-Mabuchi. This paper is a substantially extended version of the preprint arXiv:0905.4263 which it supersedes.
