Closed-form meromorphic solutions of some third order boundary layer ordinary differential equations

We introduce a general third order non-linear autonomous ODE which covers many ODEs coming from boundary layer problems, like the Falkner-Skan equation and the Cheng-Minkowycz equation. Using Wiman-Valiron theory and complex analytic methods recently developed, for the generic cases, it is shown that all their meromorphic solutions must be rational, or rational in one exponential, and then we find all of them explicitly. For a few non-generic cases, some solutions, which are meromorphic or singlevalued, are also obtained. Our results also explain why it is so difficult to obtain new closed-form solutions of the Falkner-Skan equation.

Exact solution of the planar motion of three arbitrary point vortices

We give an exact quantitative solution for the motion of three vortices of any strength, which Poincaré showed to be integrable. The absolute motion of one vortex is generally biperiodic: in uniformly rotating axes, the motion is periodic. There are two kinds of relative equilibrium configuration: two equilateral triangles and one or three colinear configurations, their stability conditions split the strengths space into three domains in which the sets of trajectories are topologically distinct. According to the values of the strengths and the initial positions, all possible %RC motions are classified. Two sets of strengths lead to generic motions other than biperiodic. First, when the angular momentum vanishes, besides the biperiodic regime there exists an expansion spiral motion and even a triple collision in a finite time, but the latter motion is nongeneric. Second, when two strengths are opposite, the system also exhibits the elastic diffusion of a vortex doublet by the third vortex. For given values of the invariants, the volume of the phase space of this Hamiltonian system is proportional to the period of the reduced motion, a well known result of the theory of adiabatic invariants. We then formally examine the behaviour of the quantities that Onsager defined only for a large number of interacting vortices.

The master Painlevé VI heat equation

Given the second order scalar Lax pair of the sixth Painlevé equation, we build a generalized heat equation with rational coefficients which does not depend any more on the Painlevé variable. Étant donné la paire de Lax scalaire de la sixième équation de Painlevé, nous donnons une construction directe de l'équation de la chaleur généralisée à coefficients rationnels qui ne dépend plus de la variable de Painlevé.

Meromorphic traveling wave solutions of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation

We look for singlevalued solutions of the squared modulus M of the traveling wave reduction of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation. Using Clunie's lemma, we first prove that any meromorphic solution M is necessarily elliptic or degenerate elliptic. We then give the two canonical decompositions of the new elliptic solution recently obtained by the subequation method.

A connection between HH3 and KdV with one source

In the system made of Korteweg-de Vries with one source, we first show by applying the Painleve' test that the two components of the source must have the same potential. We then explain the natural introduction of an additional term in the potential of the source equations while preserving the existence of a Lax pair. This allows us to prove the identity between the travelling wave reduction and one of the three integrable cases of the cubic He'non-Heiles Hamiltonian system.

Explicit solutions of the four-wave mixing model

The dynamical degenerate four-wave mixing is studied analytically in detail. By removing the unessential freedom, we first characterize this system by a lower-dimensional closed subsystem of a deformed Maxwell-Bloch type, involving only three physical variables: the intensity pattern, the dynamical grating amplitude, the relative net gain. We then classify by the Painleve' test all the cases when singlevalued solutions may exist, according to the two essential parameters of the system: the real relaxation time tau, the complex response constant gamma. In addition to the stationary case, the only two integrable cases occur for a purely nonlocal response (Real(gamma)=0), these are the complex unpumped Maxwell-Bloch system and another one, which is explicitly integrated with elliptic functions. For a generic response (Re(gamma) not=0), we display strong similarities with the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Ginzburg-Landau equation for dynamical four-wave mixing in gain nonlinear media with relaxation

We consider the dynamical degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) model in a cubic nonlinear medium including both the time relaxation of the induced nonlinearity and the nonlocal coupling. The initial ten-dimensional FWM system can be rewritten as a three-variable intrinsic system (namely the intensity pattern, the amplitude of the nonlinearity and the total net gain) which is very close to the pumped Maxwell-Bloch system. In the case of a purely nonlocal response the initial system reduces to a real damped sine-Gordon (SG) equation. We obtain a new solution of this equation in the form of a sech function with a time-dependent coefficient. By applying the reductive perturbation method to this damped SG equation, we obtain exactly the cubic complex Ginzburg Landau equation (CGL3), but with a time dependence in the loss/gain coefficient. The CGL3 describes the properties of the spatially localized interference pattern formed by the FWM.

Partial integrability of the anharmonic oscillator

We consider the anharmonic oscillator with an arbitrary-degree anharmonicity, a damping term and a forcing term, all coefficients being time-dependent: u" + g_1(x) u' + g_2(x) u + g_3(x) u^n + g_4(x) = 0, n real. Its physical applications range from the atomic Thomas-Fermi model to Emden gas dynamics equilibria, the Duffing oscillator and numerous dynamical systems. The present work is an overview which includes and generalizes all previously known results of partial integrability of this oscillator. We give the most general two conditions on the coefficients under which a first integral of a particular type exists. A natural interpretation is given for the two conditions. We compare these two conditions with those provided by the Painleve' analysis.

On the Lax pairs of the sixth Painleve' equation

The dependence of the sixth equation of Painleve' on its four parameters $(2 α,-2 β,2 γ,1-2 δ) =(θ_{\infty}^2,θ_{0}^2,θ_{1}^2,θ_{x}^2)$ is holomorphic, therefore one expects all its Lax pairs to display such a dependence. This is indeed the case of the second order scalar ``Lax'' pair of Fuchs, but the second order matrix Lax pair of Jimbo and Miwa presents a meromorphic dependence on $θ_\infty$ (and a holomorphic dependence on the three other $θ_j$). We analyze the reason for this feature and make suggestions to suppress it.

Painleve' property of the He'non-Heiles Hamiltonians

Time independent Hamiltonians of the physical type H = (P_1^2+P_2^2)/2+V(Q_1,Q_2) pass the Painleve' test for only seven potentials $V$, known as the He'non-Heiles Hamiltonians, each depending on a finite number of free constants. Proving the Painleve' property was not yet achieved for generic values of the free constants. We integrate each missing case by building a birational transformation to some fourth order first degree ordinary differential equation in the classification (Cosgrove, 2000) of such polynomial equations which possess the Painleve' property. The properties common to each Hamiltonian are: (i) the general solution is meromorphic and expressed with hyperelliptic functions of genus two, (ii) the Hamiltonian is complete (the addition of any time independent term would ruin the Painleve' property).

Analytic doubly periodic wave patterns for the integrable discrete nonlinear Schroedinger (Ablowitz-Ladik) model

We derive two new solutions in terms of elliptic functions, one for the dark and one for the bright soliton regime, for the semi-discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation of Ablowitz and Ladik. When considered in the complex plane, these two solutions are identical. In the continuum limit, they reduce to known elliptic function solutions. In the long wave limit, the dark one reduces to the collision of two discrete dark solitons, and the bright one to a discrete breather.

Completeness of the cubic and quartic Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonians

The quartic Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian $H = (P_1^2+P_2^2)/2+(Ω_1 Q_1^2+Ω_2 Q_2^2)/2 +C Q_1^4+ B Q_1^2 Q_2^2 + A Q_2^4 +(1/2)(α/Q_1^2+β/Q_2^2) - γQ_1$ passes the Painlevé test for only four sets of values of the constants. Only one of these, identical to the traveling wave reduction of the Manakov system, has been explicitly integrated (Wojciechowski, 1985), while the three others are not yet integrated in the generic case $(α,β,γ)\not=(0,0,0)$. We integrate them by building a birational transformation to two fourth order first degree equations in the classification (Cosgrove, 2000) of such polynomial equations which possess the Painlevé property. This transformation involves the stationary reduction of various partial differential equations (PDEs). The result is the same as for the three cubic Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonians, namely, in all four quartic cases, a general solution which is meromorphic and hyperelliptic with genus two. As a consequence, no additional autonomous term can be added to either the cubic or the quartic Hamiltonians without destroying the Painlevé integrability (completeness property).

Solitary waves of nonlinear nonintegrable equations

Our goal is to find closed form analytic expressions for the solitary waves of nonlinear nonintegrable partial differential equations. The suitable methods, which can only be nonperturbative, are classified in two classes. In the first class, which includes the well known so-called truncation methods, one \textit{a priori} assumes a given class of expressions (polynomials, etc) for the unknown solution; the involved work can easily be done by hand but all solutions outside the given class are surely missed. In the second class, instead of searching an expression for the solution, one builds an intermediate, equivalent information, namely the \textit{first order} autonomous ODE satisfied by the solitary wave; in principle, no solution can be missed, but the involved work requires computer algebra. We present the application to the cubic and quintic complex one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations, and to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.

Symmetry reductions of a particular set of equations of associativity in twodimensional topological field theory

The WDVV equations of associativity arising in twodimensional topological field theory can be represented, in the simplest nontrivial case, by a single third order equation of the Monge-Ampe`re type. By investigating its Lie point symmetries, we reduce it to various nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and we obtain several new explicit solutions.

First degree birational transformations of the Painlevé equations and their contiguity relations

We present a consistent truncation, allowing us to obtain the first degree birational transformation found by Okamoto for the sixth Painlevé equation. The discrete equation arising from its contiguity relation is then just the sum of six simple poles. An algebraic solution is presented, which is equivalent to but simpler than the Umemura solution. Finally, the well known confluence provides a unified picture of all first degree birational transformations for the lower Painlevé equations, ranging them in two distinct sequences.

preprint2001arXiv

New contiguity relation of the sixth Painlevé equation from a truncation

For the master Painlevé equation P6(u), we define a consistent method, adapted from the Weiss truncation for partial differential equations, which allows us to obtain the first degree birational transformation of Okamoto. Two new features are implemented to achieve this result. The first one is the homography between the derivative of the solution $u$ and a Riccati pseudopotential. The second one is an improvement of a conjecture by Fokas and Ablowitz on the structure of this birational transformation. We then build the contiguity relation of P6, which yields one new second order nonautonomous discrete equation.

Analytic expressions of hydrothermal waves

When subjected to a horizontal temperature difference, a fluid layer with a free surface becomes unstable and hydrothermal waves develop in the bulk. Such a system is modelized by two coupled amplitude equations of the one-dimensional, complex, cubic Ginzburg-Landau type. By transposing the method developed for one CGL3 equation, we obtain several new exact solutions expressed by closed form, singlevalued, analytic expressions. Some of them are the analogue of the famous amplitude hole solution of Bekki and Nozaki.
