On subgroups of the Monster isomorphic to PSL2(8)PSL_2(8)

We describe computer calculations that were used in 2016 to classify subgroups of the Monster isomorphic to PSL2(8)PSL_2(8), containing 7B7B-elements. It turns out that there is no such PSL2(8)PSL_2(8) in the Monster. These calculations confirm earlier unpublished calculations by P. E. Holmes that obtained the same result. The result has also been confirmed in independent calculations by H. Dietrich, M. Lee and T. Popiel, using different software by M. Seysen. Thus this experimental result is shown to be reproducible.

Octions: An E8E_8 description of the Standard Model

We interpret the elements of the exceptional Lie algebra e8(−24)\mathfrak{e}_{8(-24)} as objects in the Standard Model, including lepton and quark spinors with the usual properties, the Standard Model Lie algebra su(3)+su(2)+u(1)\mathfrak{su}(3)+\mathfrak{su}(2)+\mathfrak{u}(1), and the Lorentz Lie algebra so(3,1)\mathfrak{so}(3,1). Our construction relies on identifying a complex structure on spinors and then working in the enveloping algebra. The resulting model naturally contains GUTs based on SO(10)SO(10) (Georgi--Glashow), SU(5)SU(5) (Georgi), and SU(4)×SU(2)×SU(2)SU(4)\times SU(2)\times SU(2) (Pati--Salam). We then briefly speculate on the role of the remaining elements of e8\mathfrak{e}_8, and propose a mechanism leading to exactly three generations of particles.

A Symplectic Representation of E7\mathrm{E}_7

We explicitly construct a particular real form of the Lie algebra e7\mathfrak{e}_7 in terms of symplectic matrices over the octonions, thus justifying the identifications e7≅sp(6,O)\mathfrak{e}_7\cong\mathfrak{sp}(6,\mathbb{O}) and, at the group level, E7≅Sp(6,O)\mathrm{E}_7\cong\mathrm{Sp}(6,\mathbb{O}). Along the way, we provide a geometric description of the minimal representation of e7\mathfrak{e}_7 in terms of rank 3 objects called cubies.

Albert algebras and construction of the finite simple groups F4(q)F_4(q), E6(q)E_6(q) and 2E6(q){}^2E_6(q) and their generic covers

We give a uniform construction of the finite simple groups E6(q)E_6(q), F4(q)F_4(q) and 2E6(q){}^2E_6(q), which does not require any special treatment for characteristics 2 or 3, and in particular avoids any mention of quadratic Jordan algebras. Although almost all the ingredients can already be found scattered through research papers spanning more than a century, a coherent, sef-contained, account is hard to find in the literature.

On the compact real forms of the Lie algebras of type E6E_6 and F4F_4

We give a construction of the compact real form of the Lie algebra of type E6E_6, using the finite irreducible subgroup of shape 33+3:SL3(3)3^{3+3}:\mathrm{SL}_3(3), which is isomorphic to a maximal subgroup of the orthogonal group Ω7(3)Ω_7(3). In particular we show that the algebra is uniquely determined by this subgroup. Conversely, we prove from first principles that the algebra satisfies the Jacobi identity, and thus give an elementary proof of existence of a Lie algebra of type E6E_6. The compact real form of F4F_4 is exhibited as a subalgebra.
