On maximum Wiener index of directed grids

This paper is devoted to Wiener index of directed graphs, more precisely of directed grids. The grid $G_{m,n}$ is the Cartesian product $P_m\Box P_n$ of paths on $m$ and $n$ vertices, and in a particular case when $m=2$, it is a called the ladder graph $L_n$. Kraner Å umenjak et al. proved that the maximum Wiener index of a digraph, which is obtained by orienting the edges of $L_n$, is obtained when all layers isomorphic to one factor are directed paths directed in the same way except one (corresponding to an endvertex of the other factor) which is a directed path directed in the opposite way. Then they conjectured that the natural generalization of this orientation to $G_{m,n}$ will attain the maximum Wiener index among all orientations of $G_{m,n}$. In this paper we disprove the conjecture by showing that a comb-like orientation of $G_{m,n}$ has significiantly bigger Wiener index.

A note on the metric and edge metric dimensions of 2-connected graphs

For a given graph $G$, the metric and edge metric dimensions of $G$, $\dim(G)$ and ${\rm edim}(G)$, are the cardinalities of the smallest possible subsets of vertices in $V(G)$ such that they uniquely identify the vertices and the edges of $G$, respectively, by means of distances. It is already known that metric and edge metric dimensions are not in general comparable. Infinite families of graphs with pendant vertices in which the edge metric dimension is smaller than the metric dimension are already known. In this article, we construct a 2-connected graph $G$ such that $\dim(G)=a$ and ${\rm edim}(G)=b$ for every pair of integers $a,b$, where $4\le b<a$. For this we use subdivisions of complete graphs, whose metric dimension is in some cases smaller than the edge metric dimension. Along the way, we present an upper bound for the metric and edge metric dimensions of subdivision graphs under some special conditions.

On Metric Dimensions of Hypercubes

The metric (resp. edge metric or mixed metric) dimension of a graph $G$, is the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that uniquely recognizes all the pairs of distinct vertices (resp. edges, or vertices and edges) of $G$ by using a vector of distances to this set. In this note we show two unexpected results on hypercube graphs. First, we show that the metric and edge metric dimension of $Q_d$ differ by only one for every integer $d$. In particular, if $d$ is odd, then the metric and edge metric dimensions of $Q_d$ are equal. Second, we prove that the metric and mixed metric dimensions of the hypercube $Q_d$ are equal for every $d \ge 3$. We conclude the paper by conjecturing that all these three types of metric dimensions of $Q_d$ are equal when $d$ is large enough.

Bounding the k-rainbow total domination number

Recently the notion of $k$-rainbow total domination was introduced for a graph $G$, motivated by a desire to reduce the problem of computing the total domination number of the generalized prism $G \Box K_k$ to an integer labeling problem on $G$. In this paper we further demonstrate usefulness of the labeling approach, presenting bounds on the rainbow total domination number in terms of the total domination number, the rainbow domination number and the rainbow total domination number, as well as the usual domination number, where the latter presents a generalization of a result by Goddard and Henning (2018). We establish Vizing-like results for rainbow domination and rainbow total domination. By stating a Vizing-like conjecture for rainbow total domination we present a different viewpoint on Vizing's original conjecture in the case of bipartite graphs.

Graphs with the edge metric dimension smaller than the metric dimension

Given a connected graph $G$, the metric (resp. edge metric) dimension of $G$ is the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that uniquely identifies every pair of distinct vertices (resp. edges) of $G$ by means of distance vectors to such a set. In this work, we settle three open problems on (edge) metric dimension of graphs. Specifically, we show that for every $r,t\ge 2$ with $r\ne t$, there is $n_0$, such that for every $n\ge n_0$ there exists a graph $G$ of order $n$ with metric dimension $r$ and edge metric dimension $t$, which among other consequences, shows the existence of infinitely many graph whose edge metric dimension is strictly smaller than its metric dimension. In addition, we also prove that it is not possible to bound the edge metric dimension of a graph $G$ by some constant factor of the metric dimension of $G$.

Modelling simultaneous broadcasting by level-disjoint partitions

Simultaneous broadcasting of multiple messages from the same source vertex in synchronous networks is considered under restrictions that each vertex receives at most one message in a unit time step, every received message can be sent out only in the next time step, no message is sent to already informed vertex. The number of outgoing messages in unrestricted, messages have unit length, and we assume full-duplex mode. In [9] we developed a concept of level-disjoint partitions to study simultaneous broadcasting under this model. In this work we consider the optimal number of level-disjoint partitions. We also provide a necessary condition in terms of eccentricity and girth on existence of $k$ $v$-rooted level-disjoint partitions of optimal height. In particular, we provide a structural characterization of graphs admitting two level-disjoint partitions with the same root.

3-facial colouring of plane graphs

A plane graph is l-facially k-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with k colours such that any two distinct vertices on a facial segment of length at most l are coloured differently. We prove that every plane graph is 3-facially 11-colourable. As a consequence, we derive that every 2-connected plane graph with maximum face-size at most 7 is cyclically 11-colourable. These two bounds are for one off from those that are proposed by the (3l+1)-Conjecture and the Cyclic Conjecture.
