Complex Linear Effective Theory and Supersymmetry Breaking Vacua

We calculate the low energy effective action of massless and massive complex linear superfields coupled to a massive U(1) vector multiplet. Our calculations include superspace higher derivative corrections and therefore go beyond previous results. Among the superspace higher derivatives we find that terms which lead to a deformation of the auxiliary field potential and may break supersymmetry are also generated. We show that the supersymmetry breaking vacua can only be trusted if there exists a hierarchy between the higher order terms. A renormalization group analysis shows that generically a hierarchy is not generated by the quantum corrections.

Non-minimal scalar multiplets, supersymmetry breaking and dualities

We study supersymmetry breaking in theories with non-minimal multiplets (such as the complex linear or CNM multiplets), by using superspace higher derivative terms which give rise to new supersymmetry breaking vacuum solutions on top of the standard supersymmetric vacuum. We illustrate the decoupling of the additional massive sectors inside the complex linear and the CNM multiplets and show that only the Goldstino sector is left in the low energy limit. We also discuss the duality between non-minimal scalar multiplets and chiral multiplets in the presence of superspace higher derivatives. From the superspace Noether procedure we calculate the supercurrents, and we show that in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum the chiral superfield X which enters the Ferrara-Zumino supercurrent conservation equation does indeed flow in the IR to the chiral constrained Goldstino superfield. We also provide a description of the Goldstino sector in terms of the Samuel-Wess superfield for the supersymmetry breaking mechanism at hand.

Naturalness and Chaotic Inflation in Supergravity from Massive Vector Multiplets

We study the embedding of the quadratic model of chaotic inflation into the 4D, N=1 minimal theories of supergravity by the use of massive vector multiplets and investigate its robustness against higher order corrections. In particular, we investigate the criterion of technical naturalness for the inflaton potential. In the framework of the new-minimal formulation the massive vector multiplet is built in terms of a real linear multiplet coupled to a vector multiplet via the 4D analog of the Green-Schwarz term. This theory gives rise to a single-field quadratic model of chaotic inflation, which is protected by an shift symmetry which naturally suppresses the higher order corrections. The embedding in the old-minimal formulation is again achieved in terms of a massive vector multiplet and also gives rise to single-field inflation. Nevertheless in this case there is no obvious symmetry to protect the model from higher order corrections.

New supersymmetric sigma-model duality

We study dualities in off-shell 4D N = 2 supersymmetric sigma-models, using the projective superspace approach. These include (i) duality between the real O(2n) and polar multiplets; and (ii) polar-polar duality. We demonstrate that the dual of any superconformal sigma-model is superconformal. Since N = 2 superconformal sigma-models (for which target spaces are hyperkahler cones) formulated in terms of polar multiplets are naturally associated with Kahler cones (which are target spaces for N = 1 superconformal sigma-models), polar-polar duality generates a transformation between different Kahler cones. In the non-superconformal case, we study implications of polar-polar duality for the sigma-model formulation in terms of N = 1 chiral superfields. In particular, we find the relation between the original hyperkahler potential and its dual. As an application of polar-polar duality, we study self-dual models.

Off-shell superconformal nonlinear sigma-models in three dimensions

We develop superspace techniques to construct general off-shell N=1,2,3,4 superconformal sigma-models in three space-time dimensions. The most general N=3 and N=4 superconformal sigma-models are constructed in terms of N=2 chiral superfields. Several superspace proofs of the folklore statement that N=3 supersymmetry implies N=4 are presented both in the on-shell and off-shell settings. We also elaborate on (super)twistor realisations for (super)manifolds on which the three-dimensional N-extended superconformal groups act transitively and which include Minkowski space as a subspace.

Generalized Calabi-Yau metric and Generalized Monge-Ampere equation

In the neighborhood of a regular point, generalized Kahler geometry admits a description in terms of a single real function, the generalized Kahler potential. We study the local conditions for a generalized Kahler manifold to be a generalized Calabi-Yau manifold and we derive a non-linear PDE that the generalized Kahler potential has to satisfy for this to be true. This non-linear PDE can be understood as a generalization of the complex Monge-Ampere equation and its solutions give supergravity solutions with metric, dilaton and H-field.

Generalized Kahler manifolds and off-shell supersymmetry

We solve the long standing problem of finding an off-shell supersymmetric formulation for a general N = (2, 2) nonlinear two dimensional sigma model. Geometrically the problem is equivalent to proving the existence of special coordinates; these correspond to particular superfields that allow for a superspace description. We construct and explain the geometric significance of the generalized Kahler potential for any generalized Kahler manifold; this potential is the superspace Lagrangian.

Charged black holes in compactified spacetimes

We construct and investigate a compactified version of the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-NUT solution, generalizing the compactified Schwarzschild black hole that has been previously studied by several workers. Our approach to compactification is based on dimensional reduction with respect to the stationary Killing vector, resulting in three-dimensional gravity coupled to a nonlinear sigma model. Using that the original non-compactified solution corresponds to a target space geodesic, the problem can be linearized much in the same way as in the case of no electric nor NUT charge. An interesting feature of the solution family is that for nonzero electric charge but vanishing NUT charge, the solution has a curvature singularity on a torus that surrounds the event horizon, but this singularity is removed when the NUT charge is switched on. We also treat the Schwarzschild case in a more complete way than has been done previously. In particular, the asymptotic solution (the Levi-Civita solution with the height coordinate made periodic) has to our knowledge only been calculated up to a determination of the mass parameter. The periodic Levi-Civita solution contains three essential parameters, however, and the remaining two are explicitly calculated here.

E8 Quiver Gauge Theory and Mirror Symmetry

We show that the Higgs branch of a four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, with gauge and matter content summarised by an E_8 quiver diagram, is identical to the generalised Coulomb branch of a four-dimensional superconformal strongly coupled gauge theory with E_8 global symmetry. This is the final step in showing that there is a Higgs-Coulomb identity of this kind for each of the cases {0}, A_1, A_2, D_4, E_6, E_7 and E_8. This series of equivalences suggests the existence of a mirror symmetry between the quiver theories and the strongly coupled theories. We also discuss how to interpret the parameters of the quiver gauge theory in terms of the Hanany-Witten picture.

A Picture of D-branes at Strong Coupling

We use a phase space description to (re)derive a first order form of the Born-Infeld action for D-branes. This derivation also makes it possible to consider the limit where the tension of the D-brane goes to zero. We find that in this limit, which can be considered to be the strong coupling limit of the fundamental string theory, the world-volume of the D-brane generically splits into a collection of tensile strings.
