Localizing non-linear ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ sigma model on $S^2$

We present a systematic study of ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on $S^2$ with the target being a Kähler manifold. We discuss their reformulation in terms of cohomological field theory. In the cohomological formulation we use a novel version of 2D self-duality which involves a $U(1)$ action on $S^2$. In addition to the generic model we discuss the theory with target space equivariance corresponding to a supersymmetric sigma model coupled to a non-dynamical supersymmetric background gauge multiplet. We discuss the localization locus and perform a one-loop calculation around the constant maps. We argue that the theory can be reduced to some exotic model over the moduli space of holomorphic disks.

On refined Chern-Simons and refined ABJ matrix models

We consider the matrix model of $U(N)$ refined Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ for the unknot. We derive a $q$-difference operator whose insertion in the matrix integral reproduces an infinite set of Ward identities which we interpret as $q$-Virasoro constraints. The constraints are rewritten as difference equations for the generating function of Wilson loop expectation values which we solve as a recursion for the correlators of the model. The solution is repackaged in the form of superintegrability formulas for Macdonald polynomials. Additionally, we derive an equivalent $q$-difference operator for a similar refinement of ABJ theory and show that the corresponding $q$-Virasoro constraints are equal to those of refined Chern-Simons for a gauge super-group $U(N|M)$. Our equations and solutions are manifestly symmetric under Langlands duality $q\leftrightarrow t^{-1}$ which correctly reproduces 3d Seiberg duality when $q$ is a specific root of unity.

Playing with the index of M-theory

Motivated by M-theory, we study rank n K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory on a toric threefold X. In the presence of compact four-cycles, we discuss how to include the contribution of D4-branes wrapping them. Combining this with a simple assumption on the (in)dependence on Coulomb moduli in the 7d theory, we show that the partition function factorizes and, when X is Calabi-Yau and it admits an ADE ruling, it reproduces the 5d master formula for the geometrically engineered theory on A(n-1) ALE space, thus extending the usual geometric engineering dictionary to n>1. We finally speculate about implications for instanton counting on Taub-NUT.

Shifts of prepotentials (with an appendix by Michele Vergne)

We study the dynamics of supersymmetric theories in five dimensions obtained by compactifications of M-theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold X. For a compact X, this is determined by the geometry of X, in particular the Kahler class dependence of the volume of X determines the effective couplings of vector multiplets. Rigid supersymmetry emerges in the limit of divergent volume, prompting the study of the structure of Duistermaat-Heckman formula and its generalizations for non-compact toric Kahler manifolds. Our main tool is the set of finite-difference equations obeyed by equivariant volumes and their quantum versions. We also discuss a physical application of these equations in the context of seven-dimensional gauge theories, extending and clarifying our previous results. The appendix by M. Vergne provides an alternative local proof of the shift equation.

Virasoro constraints revisited

We revisit the Virasoro constraints and explore the relation to the Hirota bilinear equations. We furthermore investigate and provide the solution to non-homogeneous Virasoro constraints, namely those coming from matrix models whose domain of integration has boundaries. In particular, we provide the example of Hermitean matrices with positive eigenvalues in which case one can find a solution by induction on the rank of the matrix model.

7D supersymmetric Yang-Mills on hypertoric 3-Sasakian manifolds

We study 7D maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on 3-Sasakian manifolds. For manifolds whose hyper-Kähler cones are hypertoric we derive the perturbative part of the partition function. The answer involves a special function that counts integer lattice points in a rational convex polyhedral cone determined by hypertoric data. This also gives a more geometric structure to previous enumeration results of holomorphic functions in the literature. Based on physics intuition, we provide a factorisation result for such functions. The full proof of this factorisation using index calculations will be detailed in a forthcoming paper.

Equivariant Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism

We study an equivariant extension of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism for quantizing gauge theories. Namely, we introduce a general framework to encompass failures of the quantum master equation, and we apply it to the natural equivariant extension of AKSZ solutions of the classical master equation (CME). As examples of the construction, we recover the equivariant extension of supersymmetric Yang-Mills in 2d and of Donaldson-Witten theory.

Solving q-Virasoro constraints

We show how q-Virasoro constraints can be derived for a large class of (q,t)-deformed eigenvalue matrix models by an elementary trick of inserting certain q-difference operators under the integral, in complete analogy with full-derivative insertions for beta-ensembles. From free-field point of view the models considered have zero momentum of the highest weight, which leads to an extra constraint T_{-1} Z = 0. We then show how to solve these q-Virasoro constraints recursively and comment on the possible applications for gauge theories, for instance calculation of (supersymmetric) Wilson loop averages in gauge theories on D^2 \cross S^1 and S^3.

Transversally Elliptic Complex and Cohomological Field Theory

This work is a continuation of our previous paper arXiv:1812.06473 where we have constructed ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on 4D manifolds with a Killing vector field with isolated fixed points. In this work we expand on the mathematical aspects of the theory, with a particular focus on its nature as a cohomological field theory. The well-known Donaldson-Witten theory is a twisted version of ${\cal N}=2$ SYM and can also be constructed using the Atiyah-Jeffrey construction. This theory is concerned with the moduli space of anti-self-dual gauge connections, with a deformation theory controlled by an elliptic complex. More generally, supersymmetry requires considering configurations that look like either instantons or anti-instantons around fixed points, which we call flipping instantons. The flipping instantons of our 4D ${\cal N}=2$ theory are derived from the 5D contact instantons. The novelty is that their deformation theory is controlled by a transversally elliptic complex, which we demonstrate here. We repeat the Atiyah-Jeffrey construction in the equivariant setting and arrive at the Lagrangian (an equivariant Euler class in the relevant field space) that was also obtained from our previous work arXiv:1812.06473. We show that the transversal ellipticity of the deformation complex is crucial for the non-degeneracy of the Lagrangian and the calculability of the theory. Our construction is valid on a large class of quasi toric 4 manifolds.

Twisting with a Flip (the Art of Pestunization)

We construct ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on 4D manifolds with a Killing vector field with isolated fixed points. It turns out that for every fixed point one can allocate either instanton or anti-instanton contributions to the partition function, and that this is compatible with supersymmetry. The equivariant Donaldson-Witten theory is a special case of our construction. We present a unified treatment of Pestun's calculation on $S^4$ and equivariant Donaldson-Witten theory by generalizing the notion of self-duality on manifolds with a vector field. We conjecture the full partition function for a ${\cal N}=2$ theory on any 4D manifold with a Killing vector. Using this new notion of self-duality to localize a supersymmetric theory is what we call "Pestunization".

Gauge theories with 16 supersymmetries on spheres

We give a unified approach to localization of maximally symmetric gauge theories on spheres, including $S^6$ and $S^7$. The approach follows Pestun's method of dimensionally reducing from 10 dimensional super Yang-Mills. The resulting theories have a reduced $R$-symmetry which includes an $SU(1,1)$ subgroup, except in four dimensions where, because of conformal invariance, the full flat-space $R$-symmetry is maintained, and in seven dimensions where $SU(1,1)$ is the flat-space $R$-symmetry. For the case of $S^6$ and $S^7$ we discuss the localization of these theories and also present new results for the corresponding matrix models. The matrix models for $S^6$ and $S^7$ are qualitatively similar to the matrix models of a vector multiplet on $S^4$ and $S^5$ respectively. We also discuss the contributions of instantons in the six and seven dimensional cases.

Modular properties of full 5D SYM partition function

We study properties of the full partition function for the $U(1)$ 5D $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ gauge theory with adjoint hypermultiplet of mass $M$. This theory is ultimately related to abelian 6D (2,0) theory. We construct the full non-perturbative partition function on toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds by gluing flat copies of the Nekrasov partition function and we express the full partition function in terms of the generalized double elliptic gamma function $G_2^C$ associated with a certain moment map cone $C$. The answer exhibits a curious $SL(4,\mathbb{Z})$ modular property. Finally, we propose a set of rules to construct the partition function that resembles the calculation of 5D supersymmetric partition function with the insertion of defects of various co-dimensions.

5D Super Yang-Mills on $Y^{p,q}$ Sasaki-Einstein manifolds

On any simply connected Sasaki-Einstein five dimensional manifold one can construct a super Yang-Mills theory which preserves at least two supersymmetries. We study the special case of toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds known as $Y^{p,q}$ manifolds. We use the localisation technique to compute the full perturbative part of the partition function. The full equivariant result is expressed in terms of certain special function which appears to be a curious generalisation of the triple sine function. As an application of our general result we study the large $N$ behaviour for the case of single hypermultiplet in adjoint representation and we derive the $N^3$-behaviour in this case.

Knot Weight Systems from Graded Symplectic Geometry

We show that from an even degree symplectic NQ-manifold, whose homological vector field Q preserves the symplectic form, one can construct a weight system for tri-valent graphs with values in the Q-cohomology ring, satisfying the IHX relation. Likewise, given a representation of the homological vector field, one can construct a weight system for the chord diagrams, satisfying the IHX and STU relations. Moreover we show that the use of the 'Gronthendieck connection' in the construction is essential in making the weight system dependent only on the choice of the NQ-manifold and its representation.

On twisted N=2 5D super Yang-Mills theory

On a five dimensional simply connected Sasaki-Einstein manifold, one can construct Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter with at least two supersymmetries. The partition function of these theories localises on the contact instantons, however the contact instanton equations are not elliptic. It turns out that these equations can be embedded into the Haydys-Witten equations (which are elliptic) in the same way the 4D anti-self-dual instanton equations are embedded in the Vafa-Witten equations. We show that under some favourable circumstances, the latter equations will reduce to the former by proving some vanishing theorems. It was also known that the Haydys-Witten equations on product manifolds $M_5=M_4\times \mathbb{R}$ arise in the context of twisting the 5D maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In this paper, we present the construction of twisted $N=2$ Yang-Mills theory on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, and more generally on $K$-contact manifolds. The localisation locus of this new theory thus provides a covariant version of the Haydys-Witten equation.

q-Virasoro constraints in matrix models

The Virasoro constraints play the important role in the study of matrix models and in understanding of the relation between matrix models and CFTs. Recently the localization calculations in supersymmetric gauge theories produced new families of matrix models and we have very limited knowledge about these matrix models. We concentrate on elliptic generalization of hermitian matrix model which corresponds to calculation of partition function on $S^3 \times S^1$ for vector multiplet. We derive the $q$-Virasoro constraints for this matrix model. We also observe some interesting algebraic properties of the $q$-Virasoro algebra.

Factorization of 5D super Yang-Mills on $Y^{p,q}$ spaces

We continue our study on the partition function for 5D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on toric Sasaki-Einstein $Y^{p,q}$ manifolds. Previously, using the localisation technique we have computed the perturbative part of the partition function. In this work we show how the perturbative part factorises into four pieces, each corresponding to the perturbative answer of the same theory on $\mathbb{R}^4 \times S^1$. This allows us to identify the equivariant parameters and to conjecture the full partition functions (including the instanton contributions) for $Y^{p,q}$ spaces. The conjectured partition function receives contributions only from singular contact instantons supported along the closed Reeb orbits. At the moment we are not able to prove this fact from the first principles.

Gluing Nekrasov partition functions

In this paper we summarise the localisation calculation of 5D super Yang-Mills on simply connected toric Sasaki-Einstein (SE) manifolds. We show how various aspects of the computation, including the equivariant index, the asymptotic behaviour and the factorisation property are governed by the combinatorial data of the toric geometry. We prove that the full perturbative partition function on a simply connected SE manifold corresponding to an n-gon toric diagram factorises to n copies of perturbative Nekrasov partition function. This leads us to conjecture the full partition function as gluing n copies of full Nekrasov partition function. This work is a generalisation of some earlier computation carried out on $Y^{p,q}$ manifolds, whose moment map cone has a quadrangle and our result is valid for manifolds whose moment map cones have pentagon base, hexagon base, etc. The algorithm we used for dealing with general cones may also be of independent interest.

5D super Yang-Mills theory and the correspondence to AdS$_7$/CFT$_6$

We study the relation between 5D super Yang-Mills theory and the holographic description of 6D (2,0) superconformal theory. We start by clarifying some issues related to the localization of N=1 SYM with matter on $S^5$. We concentrate on the case of a single adjoint hypermultiplet with a mass term and argue that the theory has a symmetry enlargement at mass M=1/(2r), where r is the $S^5$ radius. However, in order to have a well-defined localization locus it is necessary to rotate M onto the imaginary axis, breaking the enlarged symmetry. Based on our prescription, the imaginary mass values are physical and we show how the localized path integral is consistent with earlier results for 5D SYM in flat space. We then compute the free energy and the expectation value for a circular Wilson loop in the large N limit. The Wilson loop calculation shows a mass dependent constant rescaling between weak and strong coupling. The Wilson loop continued back to to the enlarged symmetry point is consistent with a supergravity computation for an M2 brane using the standard identification of the compactification radius and the 5D coupling. If we continue back to the physical regime and use this value of the mass to determine the compactification radius, then we find agreement between the SYM free energy and the corresponding supergravity calculation. We also verify numerically some of our analytic approximations.

The perturbative partition function of supersymmetric 5D Yang-Mills theory with matter on the five-sphere

Based on the construction by Hosomichi, Seong and Terashima we consider N=1 supersymmetric 5D Yang-Mills theory with matter on a five-sphere with radius r. This theory can be thought of as a deformation of the theory in flat space with deformation parameter r and this deformation preserves 8 supercharges. We calculate the full perturbative partition function as a function of r/g^2, where g is the Yang-Mills coupling, and the answer is given in terms of a matrix model. We perform the calculation using localization techniques. We also argue that in the large N-limit of this deformed 5D Yang-Mills theory this matrix model provides the leading contribution to the partition function and the rest is exponentially suppressed.

AKSZ construction from reduction data

We discuss a general procedure to encode the reduction of the target space geometry into AKSZ sigma models. This is done by considering the AKSZ construction with target the BFV model for constrained graded symplectic manifolds. We investigate the relation between this sigma model and the one with the reduced structure. We also discuss several examples in dimension two and three when the symmetries come from Lie group actions and systematically recover models already proposed in the literature.

Chiral de Rham complex on Riemannian manifolds and special holonomy

Interpreting the chiral de Rham complex (CDR) as a formal Hamiltonian quantization of the supersymmetric non-linear sigma model, we suggest a setup for the study of CDR on manifolds with special holonomy. We show how to systematically construct global sections of CDR from differential forms, and investigate the algebra of the sections corresponding to the covariantly constant forms associated with the special holonomy. As a concrete example, we construct two commuting copies of the Odake algebra (an extension of the N=2 superconformal algebra) on the space of global sections of CDR of a Calabi-Yau threefold and conjecture similar results for G_2 manifolds. We also discuss quasi-classical limits of these algebras.

Twisted supersymmetric 5D Yang-Mills theory and contact geometry

We extend the localization calculation of the 3D Chern-Simons partition function over Seifert manifolds to an analogous calculation in five dimensions. We construct a twisted version of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory defined on a circle bundle over a four dimensional symplectic manifold. The notion of contact geometry plays a crucial role in the construction and we suggest a generalization of the instanton equations to five dimensional contact manifolds. Our main result is a calculation of the full perturbative partition function on a five sphere for the twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with different Chern-Simons couplings. The final answer is given in terms of a matrix model. Our construction admits generalizations to higher dimensional contact manifolds. This work is inspired by the work of Baulieu-Losev-Nekrasov from the mid 90's, and in a way it is covariantization of their ideas for a contact manifold.

Introduction to Graded Geometry, Batalin-Vilkovisky Formalism and their Applications

These notes are intended to provide a self-contained introduction to the basic ideas of finite dimensional Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism and its applications. A brief exposition of super- and graded geometries is also given. The BV-formalism is introduced through an odd Fourier transform and the algebraic aspects of integration theory are stressed. As a main application we consider the perturbation theory for certain finite dimensional integrals within BV-formalism. As an illustration we present a proof of the isomorphism between the graph complex and the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of formal Hamiltonian vectors fields. We briefly discuss how these ideas can be extended to the infinite dimensional setting. These notes should be accessible to both physicists and mathematicians.

Knot Invariants and New Weight Systems from General 3D TFTs

We introduce and study the Wilson loops in a general 3D topological field theories (TFTs), and show that the expectation value of Wilson loops also gives knot invariants as in Chern-Simons theory. We study the TFTs within the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) and Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) framework, and the Ward identities of these theories imply that the expectation value of the Wilson loop is a pairing of two dual constructions of (co)cycles of certain extended graph complex (extended from Kontsevich's graph complex to accommodate the Wilson loop). We also prove that there is an isomorphism between the same complex and certain extended Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of Hamiltonian vector fields. This isomorphism allows us to generalize the Lie algebra weight system for knots to weight systems associated with any homological vector field and its representations. As an example we construct knot invariants using holomorphic vector bundle over hyperKahler manifolds.

Sheaves of N=2 supersymmetric vertex algebras on Poisson manifolds

We construct a sheaf of N=2 vertex algebras naturally associated to any Poisson manifold. The relation of this sheaf to the chiral de Rham complex is discussed. We reprove the result about the existence of two commuting N = 2 superconformal structures on the space of sections of the chiral de Rham complex of a Calabi-Yau manifold, but now calculated in a manifest N=2 formalism. We discuss how the semi-classical limit of this sheaf of N=2 vertex algebras is related to the classical supersymmetric non-linear sigma model.

Wilson Lines from Representations of NQ-Manifolds

An NQ-manifold is a non-negatively graded supermanifold with a degree 1 homological vector field. The focus of this paper is to define the Wilson loops/lines in the context of NQ-manifolds and to study their properties. The Wilson loops/lines, which give the holonomy or parallel transport, are familiar objects in usual differential geometry, we analyze the subtleties in the generalization to the NQ-setting and we also sketch some possible applications of our construction.

Equivariant Rozansky-Witten classes and TFTs

We first construct the Rozansky-Witten model coupled to BF theory and Chern-Simons theory using the Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) method. Then we apply the machinery developed in some earlier papers about AKSZ theories and characteristic classes to these concrete models: the BF-Rozansky-Witten model and the Chern-Simons-Rozansky-Witten model. In the former case, we obtain characteristic classes on the target hyperKahler manifold equipped with a group action as a generalization of the original Rozansky-Witten classes. We also give the prescription for similar classes associated with a holomorphic symplectic manifold and demonstrate the invariance of such classes explicitly.

Generalized Calabi-Yau metric and Generalized Monge-Ampere equation

In the neighborhood of a regular point, generalized Kahler geometry admits a description in terms of a single real function, the generalized Kahler potential. We study the local conditions for a generalized Kahler manifold to be a generalized Calabi-Yau manifold and we derive a non-linear PDE that the generalized Kahler potential has to satisfy for this to be true. This non-linear PDE can be understood as a generalization of the complex Monge-Ampere equation and its solutions give supergravity solutions with metric, dilaton and H-field.

Odd Chern-Simons Theory, Lie Algebra Cohomology and Characteristic Classes

We investigate the generic 3D topological field theory within AKSZ-BV framework. We use the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism to construct explicitly cocycles of the Lie algebra of formal Hamiltonian vector fields and we argue that the perturbative partition function gives rise to secondary characteristic classes. We investigate a toy model which is an odd analogue of Chern-Simons theory, and we give some explicit computation of two point functions and show that its perturbation theory is identical to the Chern-Simons theory. We give concrete example of the homomorphism taking Lie algebra cocycles to Q-characteristic classes, and we reinterpreted the Rozansky-Witten model in this light.

Superconformal structures on generalized Calabi-Yau metric manifolds

We construct an embedding of two commuting copies of the N=2 superconformal vertex algebra in the space of global sections of the twisted chiral-anti-chiral de Rham complex of a generalized Calabi-Yau metric manifold, including the case when there is a non-trivial H-flux and non-vanishing dilaton. The 4 corresponding BRST charges are well defined on any generalized Kahler manifold. This allows one to consider the half-twisted model defining thus the chiral de Rham complex of a generalized Kahler manifold. The classical limit of this result allows one to recover the celebrated generalized Kahler identities as the degree zero part of an infinite dimensional Lie superalgebra attached to any generalized Kahler manifold. As a byproduct of our study we investigate the properties of generalized Calabi-Yau metric manifolds in the Lie algebroid setting.

Finite dimensional AKSZ-BV theories

We describe a canonical reduction of AKSZ-BV theories to the cohomology of the source manifold. We get a finite dimensional BV theory that describes the contribution of the zero modes to the full QFT. Integration can be defined and correlators can be computed. As an illustration of the general construction we consider two dimensional Poisson sigma model and three dimensional Courant sigma model. When the source manifold is compact, the reduced theory is a generalization of the AKSZ construction where we take as source the cohomology ring. We present the possible generalizations of the AKSZ theory.

Non-linear sigma models via the chiral de Rham complex

We propose a physical interpretation of the chiral de Rham complex as a formal Hamiltonian quantization of the supersymmetric non-linear sigma model. We show that the chiral de Rham complex on a Calabi-Yau manifold carries all information about the classical dynamics of the sigma model. Physically, this provides an operator realization of the non-linear sigma model. Mathematically, the idea suggests the use of Hamiltonian flow equations within the vertex algebra formalism with the possibility to incorporate both left and right moving sectors within one mathematical framework.

Lectures on Generalized Complex Geometry and Supersymmetry

These are the lecture notes from the 26th Winter School "Geometry and Physics", Czech Republic, Srni, January 14 - 21, 2006. These lectures are an introduction into the realm of generalized geometry based on the tangent plus the cotangent bundle. In particular we discuss the relation of this geometry to physics, namely to two-dimensional field theories. We explain in detail the relation between generalized complex geometry and supersymmetry. We briefly review the generalized Kahler and generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds and explain their appearance in physics.

Computing Amplitudes in topological M-theory

We define a topological quantum membrane theory on a seven dimensional manifold of $G_2$ holonomy. We describe in detail the path integral evaluation for membrane geometries given by circle bundles over Riemann surfaces. We show that when the target space is $CY_3\times S^1$ quantum amplitudes of non-local observables of membranes wrapping the circle reduce to the A-model amplitudes. In particular for genus zero we show that our model computes the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. Moreover, for membranes wrapping calibrated homology spheres in the $CY_3$, we find that the amplitudes of our model are related to Joyce invariants.

Generalized Kahler Geometry from supersymmetric sigma models

We give a physical derivation of generalized Kahler geometry. Starting from a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model, we rederive and explain the results of Gualtieri regarding the equivalence between generalized Kahler geometry and the bi-hermitean geometry of Gates-Hull-Rocek. When cast in the language of supersymmetric sigma models, this relation maps precisely to that between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. We also discuss topological twist in this context.

Generalized Kahler manifolds and off-shell supersymmetry

We solve the long standing problem of finding an off-shell supersymmetric formulation for a general N = (2, 2) nonlinear two dimensional sigma model. Geometrically the problem is equivalent to proving the existence of special coordinates; these correspond to particular superfields that allow for a superspace description. We construct and explain the geometric significance of the generalized Kahler potential for any generalized Kahler manifold; this potential is the superspace Lagrangian.

N=1 supersymmetric sigma model with boundaries, II

We consider the N=1 supersymmetric two-dimensional non-linear sigma model with boundaries and nonzero B-field. By analysing the appropriate currents we describe the full set of boundary conditions compatible with N=1 superconformal symmetry. Using this result the problem of finding a correct action is discussed. We interpret the supersymmetric boundary conditions as a maximal integral submanifold of the target space manifold, and speculate about a new geometrical structure, the deformation of an almost product structure.

Tensionless Strings, WZW Models at Critical Level and Massless Higher Spin Fields

We discuss the notion of tensionless limit in quantum bosonic string theory, especially in flat Minkowski space, noncompact group manifolds (e.g., SL(2,R)) and coset manifolds (e.g., AdS). We show that in curved space typically there exists a critical value of the tension which is related to the critical value of the level of the corresponding affine algebra. We argue that at the critical level the sring theory becomes tensionless and that there exists a huge new symmetry of the theory. We dicuss the appearence of the higher spin massless states at the critical level.

Poisson sigma model over group manifolds

We study the Poisson sigma model which can be viewed as a topological string theory. Mainly we concentrate our attention on the Poisson sigma model over a group manifold G with a Poisson-Lie structure. In this case the flat connection conditions arise naturally. The boundary conditions (D-branes) are studied in this model. It turns out that the D-branes are labelled by the coisotropic subgroups of G. We give a description of the moduli space of classical solutions over Riemann surfaces both without and with boundaries. Finally we comment briefly on the duality properties of the model.

Strings at the Tachyonic Vacuum

We study the world-volume effective action of Dp-brane at the tachyonic vacuum which is equivalent to the zero tension limit. Using the Hamiltonian formalism we discuss the algebra of constraints and show that there is a non-trivial ideal of the algebra which corresponds to Virasoro like constraints. The Lagrangian treatment of the model is also considered. For the gauge fixed theory we construct the important subset of classical solutions which is equivalent to the string theory solutions in conformal gauge. We speculate on a possible quantization of the system. At the end a brief discussion of different background fields and fluctuations around the tachyonic vacuum is presented.

Limits of the D-brane action

For background geometries whose metric contain a scale $γ$ we reformulate the Born-Infeld D-brane action in terms of $ε\equiv γ/(2πα')$. This may be taken as a starting point for various perturbative treatments of the theory. We study two limits that arise at zeroth order of such perturbations. In the first limit, that corresponds to the $g_s\to\infty$ with $ε$ fix, we find a "string parton" picture, also in the presense of some background RR-fields. In the second limit, $ε\to 0$, we find a topological model.
