Hamilton--Jacobi equations for controlled gradient flows: the comparison principle

Motivated by recent developments in the fields of large deviations for interacting particle system and mean field control, we establish a comparison principle for the Hamilton--Jacobi equation corresponding to linearly controlled gradient flows of an energy function $\cE$ defined on a metric space $(E,d)$. Our analysis is based on a systematic use of the regularizing properties of gradient flows in evolutional variational inequality (EVI) formulation, that we exploit for constructing rigorous upper and lower bounds for the formal Hamiltonian at hand and, in combination with the use of the Tataru's distance, for establishing the key estimates needed to bound the difference of the Hamiltonians in the proof of the comparison principle. Our abstract results apply to a large class of examples only partially covered by the existing theory, including gradient flows on Hilbert spaces and the Wasserstein space equipped with a displacement convex energy functional $\cE$ satisfying McCann's condition.

A Banach-Dieudonné theorem for the space of bounded continuous functions on a separable metric space with the strict topology

Let X be a separable metric space and let βbe the strict topology on the space of bounded continuous functions on X, which has the space of τ-additive Borel measures as a continuous dual space. We prove a Banach-Dieudonneé type result for the space of bounded continuous functions equipped with β. As a consequence, this space is hypercomplete and a Pták space. Additionally, the closed graph, inverse mapping and open mapping theorems holds for linear maps between space of this type.

Large deviations for Markov jump processes with mean-field interaction via the comparison principle for an associated Hamilton-Jacobi equation

We prove the large deviation principle for the trajectory of a broad class of mean field interacting Markov jump processes via a general analytic approach based on viscosity solutions. Examples include generalized Ehrenfest models as well as Curie-Weiss spin flip dynamics with singular jump rates. The main step in the proof of the large deviation principle, which is of independent interest, is the proof of the comparison principle for an associated collection of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Additionally, we show that the large deviation principle provides a general method to identify a Lyapunov function for the associated McKean-Vlasov equation.

Stationary product measures for conservative particle systems and ergodicity criteria

We study conservative particle systems on W^S, where S is countable and W = {0, ..., N} or the natural numbers. The rate of a particle moving from site x to site y is given by p(x,y) b(eta_x, eta_y), where eta_z is the number of particles at site z. Under assumptions on b and the assumption that p is finite range, which allow for the exclusion, zero range and misanthrope processes, we show exactly what the stationary product measures are. Furthermore we show that a stationary measure mu is ergodic if and only if the tail sigma algebra of the partial sums is trivial under mu. This is a consequence of a more general result on interacting particle systems that shows that a stationary measure is ergodic if and only if the sigma algebra of sets invariant under the transformations of the process is trivial. We apply this result combined with a coupling argument on the stationary product measures to determine which product measures are ergodic. For the case that W is finite this gives a complete characterisation. For the case that W is the set of natural numbers we show that for nearly all functions b a stationary product measure is ergodic if and only if it is supported by configurations with an infinite amount of particles. We show that this picture is not complete, we give an example of a system where b is such that there is a stationary product measure which is not ergodic, even though it concentrates on configurations with an infinite number of particles.
