Critical points of degenerate polyconvex energies

We study critical and stationary, i.e. critical with respect to both inner and outer variations, points of polyconvex functionals of the form $f(X) = g(\det(X))$, for $X \in \mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}$. In particular, we show that critical points $u \in Lip(Ω,\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $\det(Du) \neq 0$ a.e. have locally constant determinant except in a relatively closed set of measure zero, and that stationary points have constant determinant almost everywhere. This is deduced from a more general result concerning solutions $u \in Lip(Ω,\mathbb{R}^n)$, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ to the linearized problem $curl(βDu) = 0$. We also present some generalization of the original result to higher dimensions and assuming further regularity on solutions $u$. Finally, we show that the differential inclusion associated to stationarity with respect to polyconvex energies as above is rigid.

Non-classical solutions of the $p$-Laplace equation

In this paper we answer Iwaniec and Sbordone's conjecture \cite{IB94} concerning very weak solutions to the $p$-Laplace equation. Namely, on one hand we show that distributional solutions of the $p$-Laplace equation in $W^{1,r}$ for $p \neq 2$ and $r>\max\{ 1,p-1\}$ are classical weak solutions if their weak derivatives belong to certain cones. On the other hand, we construct via convex integration non-energetic distributional solutions if this cone condition is not met, thus answering negatively Iwaniec and Sbordone's conjecture in general.

Minimal graphs and differential inclusions

In this paper, we study the differential inclusion associated to the minimal surface system for two-dimensional graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{2 + n}$. We prove regularity of $W^{1,2}$ solutions and a compactness result for approximate solutions of this differential inclusion in $W^{1,p}$. Moreover, we make a perturbation argument to infer that for every $R > 0$ there exists $α(R) >0$ such that $R$-Lipschitz stationary points for functionals $α$-close in the $C^2$ norm to the area functional are always regular. We also use a counterexample of \cite{KIRK} to show the existence of irregular critical points to inner variations of the area functional.

The oriented mailing problem and its convex relaxation

In this note we introduce a new model for the mailing problem in branched transportation in order to allow the cost functional to take into account the orientation of the moving particles. This gives an effective answer to [Problem 15.9] of the book "Optimal transportation networks" by Bernot, Caselles, and Morel. Moreover we define a convex relaxation in terms of rectifiable currents with group coefficients. With such approach we provide the problem with a notion of calibration. Using similar techniques we define a convex relaxation and a corresponding notion of calibration for a variant of the Steiner tree problem in which a connectedness constraint is assigned only among a certain partition of a given set of finitely many points.
