FQHE and $tt^{*}$ geometry

Cumrun Vafa proposed a new unifying model for the principal series of FQHE which predicts non-Abelian statistics of the quasi-holes. The many-body Hamiltonian supporting these topological phases of matter is invariant under four supersymmetries. In the thesis we study the geometrical properties of this Landau-Ginzburg theory. The emerging picture is in agreement with the Vafa's predictions. The $4$-SQM Vafa Hamiltonian is shown to capture the topological order of FQHE and the $tt^{*}$ monodromy representation of the braid group factors through a Temperley-Lieb/Hecke algebra with $q = \pm \exp(πi/ν)$. In particular, the quasi-holes have the same non-Abelian braiding properties of the degenerate field $ϕ_{1,2}$ in Virasoro minimal models. Part of the thesis is dedicated to minor results about the geometrical properties of the Vafa model for the case of a single electron. In particular, we study a special class of models which reveal a beautiful connection between the physics of quantum Hall effect and the geometry of modular curves. Despite it is not relevant for phenomenological purposes, this class of theories has remarkable properties which enlarge further the rich mathematical structure of FQHE.

Non-minimal quasi-holes and topological degeneracy of FQHE

We extend the analysis of the Vafa $\mathcal{N}=4$ SUSY model of FQHE and discuss other observables which characterize the FQHE topological order. We consider in particular the braiding properties of quasi-holes with generic charge. As one naturally expects, any quasi-hole is associated with an irreducible representation of $SU(2)$ and the statistics of a bunch of $d$ punctures is described by the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection specialized to the corresponding representation. We also discuss the higher genus generalization of the Vafa model of FQHE and the corresponding $tt^{*}$ geometry.

FQHE and $tt^{*}$ geometry

Cumrun Vafa has proposed a microscopic description of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) in terms of a many-body Hamiltonian $H$ invariant under four supersymmetries. The non-Abelian statistics of the defects (quasi-holes and quasi-particles) is then determined by the monodromy representation of the associated $tt^*$ geometry. In this paper we study the monodromy representation of the Vafa 4-susy model. Modulo some plausible assumption, we find that the monodromy representation factors through a Temperley-Lieb/Hecke algebra with $q=\pm\exp(πi/ν)$. The emerging picture agrees with the other Vafa's predictions as well. The bulk of the paper is dedicated to the development of new concepts, ideas, and techniques in $tt^*$ geometry which are of independent interest. We present several examples of these geometric structures in various contexts.
