Statistical moments and integrability properties of monatomic gas mixtures with long range interactions

This document presents a priori estimates related to statistical moments and integrability properties for solutions of systems of monatomic gas mixtures modelled with the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with long range interactions for hard potentials. We detail the conditions for the generation and propagation of polynomial and exponential moments, and the integrability in Lebesgue spaces.

About the Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation with moderately soft potentials

We present in this document some essential properties of solutions to the homogeneous Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation for moderately soft potentials. Uniform in time estimates for statistical moments, $L^{p}$-norm generation and Sobolev regularity are shown using a combination of techniques that include recent developments concerning level set analysis in the spirit of De Giorgi and refined entropy-entropy dissipation functional inequalities for the Landau collision operator which are extended to the case in question here. As a consequence of the analysis, we prove algebraic relaxation of non degenerate distributions towards the Fermi-Dirac statistics under a weak non saturation condition for the initial datum. All quantitative estimates are uniform with respect to the quantum parameter. They therefore also hold for the classical limit, that is the Landau equation.

Radiative Transfer with long-range interactions in the half-space

We study the well-posedness and regularity theory for the Radiative Transfer equation in the peaked regime posed in the half-space. An average lemma for the transport equation in the half-space is stablished and used to generate interior regularity for solutions of the model. The averaging also shows a fractional regularization gain up to the boundary for the spatial derivatives.

Analysis of a chemotaxis system modeling ant foraging

In this paper we analyze a system of PDEs recently introduced in [P. Amorim, {\it Modeling ant foraging: a {chemotaxis} approach with pheromones and trail formation}], in order to describe the dynamics of ant foraging. The system is made of convection-diffusion-reaction equations, and the coupling is driven by chemotaxis mechanisms. We establish the well-posedness for the model, and investigate the regularity issue for a large class of integrable data. Our main focus is on the (physically relevant) two-dimensional case with boundary conditions, where we prove that the solutions remain bounded for all times. The proof involves a series of fine \emph{a priori} estimates in Lebesgue spaces.

One dimensional dissipative Boltzmann equation: measure solutions, cooling rate and self-similar profile

This manuscript investigates the following aspects of the one dimensional dissipative Boltzmann equation associated to variable hard-spheres kernel: (1) we show the optimal cooling rate of the model by a careful study of the system satisfied by the solution's moments, (2) give existence and uniqueness of measure solutions, and (3) prove the existence of a non-trivial self-similar profile, i.e. homogeneous cooling state, after appropriate scaling of the equation. The latter issue is based on compactness tools in the set of Borel measures. More specifically, we apply a dynamical fixed point theorem on a suitable stable set, for the model dynamics, of Borel measures.

Source estimation with incoherent waves in random waveguides

We study an inverse source problem for the acoustic wave equation in a random waveguide. The goal is to estimate the source of waves from measurements of the acoustic pressure at a remote array of sensors. The waveguide effect is due to boundaries that trap the waves and guide them in a preferred (range) direction, the waveguide axis, along which the medium is unbounded. The random waveguide is a model of perturbed ideal waveguides which have flat boundaries and are filled with known media that do not change with range. The perturbation consists of fluctuations of the boundary and of the wave speed due to numerous small inhomogeneities in the medium. The fluctuations are uncertain in applications, which is why we model them with random processes, and they cause significant cumulative scattering at long ranges from the source. The scattering effect manifests mathematically as an exponential decay of the expectation of the acoustic pressure, the coherent part of the wave. The incoherent wave is modeled by the random fluctuations of the acoustic pressure, which dominate the expectation at long ranges from the source. We use the existing theory of wave propagation in random waveguides to analyze the inverse problem of estimating the source from incoherent wave recordings at remote arrays. We show how to obtain from the incoherent measurements high fidelity estimates of the time resolved energy carried by the waveguide modes, and study the invertibility of the system of transport equations that model energy propagation in order to estimate the source.

The radiative transfer equation in the forward-peaked regime

In this work we study the radiative transfer equation in the forward-peaked regime in free space. Specifically, it is shown that the equation is well-posed by proving instantaneous regularization of weak solutions for arbitrary initial datum in L1. Classical techniques for hypo-elliptic operators such as averaging lemma are used in the argument. Among the interesting aspect of the proof are the use of the stereographic projection and the presentation of a rigorous expression for the scattering operator given in terms of a fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator on the sphere, or equivalently, a weighted fractional Laplacian analog in the projected plane. Such representations may be used for accurate numerical simulations of the model. As a bonus given by the methodology, we show convergence of Henyey-Greenstein scattering models and vanishing of the solution at time algebraic rate due to scattering diffusion.

Electromagnetic wave propagation in random waveguides

We study long range propagation of electromagnetic waves in random waveguides with rectangular cross-section and perfectly conducting boundaries. The waveguide is filled with an isotropic linear dielectric material, with randomly fluctuating electric permittivity. The fluctuations are weak, but they cause significant cumulative scattering over long distances of propagation of the waves. We decompose the wave field in propagating and evanescent transverse electric and magnetic modes with random amplitudes that encode the cumulative scattering effects. They satisfy a coupled system of stochastic differential equations driven by the random fluctuations of the electric permittivity. We analyze the solution of this system with the diffusion approximation theorem, under the assumption that the fluctuations decorrelate rapidly in the range direction. The result is a detailed characterization of the transport of energy in the waveguide, the loss of coherence of the modes and the depolarization of the waves due to cumulative scattering.

A new approach to the creation and propagation of exponential moments in the Boltzmann equation

We study the creation and propagation of exponential moments of solutions to the spatially homogeneous $d$-dimensional Boltzmann equation. In particular, when the collision kernel is of the form $|v-v_*|^βb(\cos(θ))$ for $β\in (0,2]$ with $\cos(θ)= |v-v_*|^{-1}(v-v_*)\cdot σ$ and $σ\in \mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, and assuming the classical cut-off condition $ b(\cos(θ))$ integrable in $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, we prove that there exists $a > 0$ such that moments with weight $\exp(a \min{t,1} |v|^β)$ are finite for $t>0$, where $a$ only depends on the collision kernel and the initial mass and energy. We propose a novel method of proof based on a single differential inequality for the exponential moment with time-dependent coefficients.

Wave propagation in waveguides with random boundaries

We give a detailed analysis of long range cumulative scattering effects from rough boundaries in waveguides. We assume small random fluctuations of the boundaries and obtain a quantitative statistical description of the wave field. The method of solution is based on coordinate changes that straighten the boundaries. The resulting problem is similar from the mathematical point of view to that of wave propagation in random waveguides with interior inhomogeneities. We quantify the net effect of scattering at the random boundaries and show how it differs from that of scattering by internal inhomogeneities.
