About the Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation with moderately soft potentials

We present in this document some essential properties of solutions to the homogeneous Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation for moderately soft potentials. Uniform in time estimates for statistical moments, $L^{p}$-norm generation and Sobolev regularity are shown using a combination of techniques that include recent developments concerning level set analysis in the spirit of De Giorgi and refined entropy-entropy dissipation functional inequalities for the Landau collision operator which are extended to the case in question here. As a consequence of the analysis, we prove algebraic relaxation of non degenerate distributions towards the Fermi-Dirac statistics under a weak non saturation condition for the initial datum. All quantitative estimates are uniform with respect to the quantum parameter. They therefore also hold for the classical limit, that is the Landau equation.

From Boltzmann equation for granular gases to a modified Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

In this paper, we give an overview of the results established in [3] which provides the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres in 3D. In particular, we obtain a new system of hydrodynamic equations describing granular flows and prove existence of classical solutions to the aforementioned system. One of the main issue is to identify the correct relation between the restitution coefficient (which quantifies the rate of energy loss at the microscopic level) and the Knudsen number which allows us to obtain non trivial hydrodynamic behavior. In such a regime, we construct strong solutions to the inelastic Boltzmann equation, near thermal equilibrium whose role is played by the so-called homogeneous cooling state. We prove then the uniform exponential stability with respect to the Knudsen number of such solutions, using a spectral analysis of the linearized problem combined with technical a priori nonlinear estimates. Finally, we prove that such solutions converge, in a specific weak sense, towards some hydrodynamic limit that depends on time and space variables only through macroscopic quantities that satisfy a suitable modification of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system.

A Kac model for kinetic annihilation

In this paper we consider the stochastic dynamics of a finite system of particles in a finite volume (Kac-like particle system) which annihilate with probability $α\in (0,1)$ or collide elastically with probability $1-α$. We first establish the well-posedness of the particle system which exhibits no conserved quantities. We rigorously prove that, in some thermodynamic limit, a suitable hierarchy of kinetic equations is recovered for which tensorized solution to the homogenous Boltzmann with annihilation is a solution. For bounded collision kernels, this shows in particular that propagation of chaos holds true. Furthermore, we make conjectures about the limit behaviour of the particle system when hard-sphere interactions are taken into account.

Convergence to equilibrium for linear spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with hard and soft potentials: a semigroup approach in $L^1$-spaces

We investigate the large time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous linear Boltzmann equation from a semigroup viewpoint. Our analysis is performed in some (weighted) $L^{1}$-spaces. We deal with both the cases of hard and soft potentials (with angular cut-off). For hard potentials, we provide a new proof of the fact that, in weighted $L^{1}$-spaces with exponential or algebraic weights, the solutions converge exponentially fast towards equilibrium. Our approach uses weak-compactness arguments combined with recent results of the second author on positive semigroups in $L^{1}$-spaces. For soft potentials, in $L^{1}$-spaces, we exploits the convergence to ergodic projection for perturbed substochastic semigroup to show that, for very general initial datum, solutions to the linear Boltzmann equation converges to equilibrium in large time. Moreover, for a large class of initial data, we also prove that the convergence rate is at least algebraic. Notice that, for soft potentials, no exponential rate of convergence is expected because of the absence of spectral gap.

Exponential trend to equilibrium for the inelastic Boltzmann equationdriven by a particle bath

We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove that the solution to the associated initial-value problem converges exponentially fast towards the unique equilibrium solution. The proof combines a careful spectral analysis of the linearised semigroup as well as entropy estimates. The trend towards equilibrium holds in the weakly inelastic regime in which $α$ is close to $1$, and the rate of convergence is explicit and depends solely on the spectral gap of the \emph{elastic} linearised collision operator.

One dimensional dissipative Boltzmann equation: measure solutions, cooling rate and self-similar profile

This manuscript investigates the following aspects of the one dimensional dissipative Boltzmann equation associated to variable hard-spheres kernel: (1) we show the optimal cooling rate of the model by a careful study of the system satisfied by the solution's moments, (2) give existence and uniqueness of measure solutions, and (3) prove the existence of a non-trivial self-similar profile, i.e. homogeneous cooling state, after appropriate scaling of the equation. The latter issue is based on compactness tools in the set of Borel measures. More specifically, we apply a dynamical fixed point theorem on a suitable stable set, for the model dynamics, of Borel measures.

Existence of self-similar profile for a kinetic annihilation model

We show the existence of a self-similar solution for a modified Boltzmann equation describing probabilistic ballistic annihilation. Such a model describes a system of hard-spheres such that, whenever two particles meet, they either annihilate with probability $α\in (0,1)$ or they undergo an elastic collision with probability $1 - α$. For such a model, the number of particles, the linear momentum and the kinetic energy are not conserved. We show that, for $α$ smaller than some explicit threshold value $ α_*$, a self-similar solution exists.

Uniqueness of the self-similar profile for a kinetic annihilation model

We show the existence of a self-similar solution for a We prove the uniqueness of the self-similar profile solution for a modified Boltzmann equation describing probabilistic ballistic annihilation. Such a model describes a system of hard spheres such that, whenever two particles meet, they either annihilate with probability $α\in (0,1)$ or they undergo an elastic collision with probability $1-α$. The existence of a self-similar profile for $α$ smaller than an explicit threshold value $\underlineα_1$ has been obtained in our previous contribution (J. Differential Equations, 254, 3023--3080, 2013). . We complement here our analysis of such a model by showing that, for some $α^{\sharp} $ explicit, the self-similar profile is unique for $α\in (0,α^{\sharp})$.

Boltzmann Model for viscoelastic particles: asymptotic behavior, pointwise lower bounds and regularity

We investigate the long time behavior of a system of viscoelastic particles modeled with the homogeneous Boltzmann equation. We prove the existence of a universal Maxwellian intermediate asymptotic state and explicit the rate of convergence towards it. Exponential lower pointwise bounds and propagation of regularity are also studied. These results can be seen as the generalization of several classical facts holding for the pseudo-Maxwellian and constant normal restitution models.

Exponential convergence to equilibrium for subcritical solutions of the Becker-Döring equations

We prove that any subcritical solution to the Becker-Döring equations converges exponentially fast to the unique steady state with same mass. Our convergence result is quantitative and we show that the rate of exponential decay is governed by the spectral gap for the linearized equation, for which several bounds are provided. This improves the known convergence result by Jabin & Niethammer (see ref. [14]). Our approach is based on a careful spectral analysis of the linearized Becker-Döring equation (which is new to our knowledge) in both a Hilbert setting and in certain weighted $\ell^1$ spaces. This spectral analysis is then combined with uniform exponential moment bounds of solutions in order to obtain a convergence result for the nonlinear equation.

Non-autonomous Honesty theory in abstract state spaces with applications to linear kinetic equations

We provide a honesty theory of substochastic evolution families in real abstract state space, extending to an non-autonomous setting the result obtained for $C_0$-semigroups in our recent contribution \textit{[On perturbed substochastic semigroups in abstract state spaces, \textit{Z. Anal. Anwend.} \textbf{30}, 457--495, 2011]}. The link with the honesty theory of perturbed substochastic semigroups is established. Several applications to non-autonomous linear kinetic equations (linear Boltzmann equation and fragmentation equation) are provided.

Transport semigroup associated to positive boundary conditions of unit norm: a Dyson-Phillips approach

We revisit our study of general transport operator with general force field and general invariant measure by considering, in the $L^1$ setting, the linear transport operator $\T_H$ associated to a linear and positive boundary operator $H$ of unit norm. It is known that in this case an extension of $\T_H$ generates a substochastic (i.e. positive contraction) $C_0$-semigroup $(V_H(t))_{t\geq 0}$. We show here that $(V_H(t))_{t\geq 0}$ is the smallest substochastic $C_0$-semigroup with the above mentioned property and provides a representation of $(V_H(t))_{t \geq 0}$ as the sum of an expansion series similar to Dyson-Phillips series. We develop an honesty theory for such boundary perturbations that allows to consider the honesty of trajectories on subintervals $J \subseteq [0,\infty)$. New necessary and sufficient conditions for a trajectory to be honest are given in terms of the aforementioned series expansion.

Two proofs of Haff's law for dissipative gases: the use of entropy and the weakly inelastic regime

We revisit our recent contribution (SIAM J. Math. Analysis, 42 (2010) 2499--2538) and give two simpler proofs of the so-called Haff's law for granular gases (with non-necessarily constant restitution coefficient). The first proof is based upon the use of entropy and asserts that Haff's law holds whenever the initial datum is of finite entropy. The second proof uses only the moments of the solutions and holds in some weakly inelasticity regime which has to be clearly defined whenever the restitution coefficient is non-constant

Uniqueness and regularity of steady states of the Boltzmann equation for viscoelastic hard-spheres driven by a thermal bath

We study the uniqueness and regularity of the steady states of the diffusively driven Boltzmann equation in the physically relevant case where the restitution coefficient depends on the impact velocity including, in particular, the case of viscoelastic hard-spheres. We adopt a strategy which is novel in several aspects, in particular, the study of regularity does not requires a priori knowledge of the time-dependent problem. Furthermore, the uniqueness result is obtained in the small thermalization regime by studying the so-called quasi-elastic limit for the problem. An important new aspect lies in the fact that no entropy functional inequality is needed in the limiting process.

Uniqueness in the weakly inelastic regime of the equilibrium state of the inelastic Boltzmann equation driven by a particle bath

We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard-spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove uniqueness of the stationary solution (with given mass) in the weakly inelastic regime; i.e., for any inelasticity parameter $α\in (α_0,1)$, with some constructive $α_0 \in [0, 1)$. Our analysis is based on a perturbative argument which uses the knowledge of the stationary solution in the elastic limit and quantitative estimates of the convergence of stationary solutions as the inelasticity parameter goes to 1. In order to achieve this we give an accurate spectral analysis of the associated linearized collision operator in the elastic limit. Several qualitative properties of this unique steady state $F_α$ are also derived; in particular, we prove that $F_α$ is bounded from above and from below by two explicit universal (i.e. independent of $α$) Maxwellian distributions.

Free cooling and high-energy tails of granular gases with variable restitution coefficient

We prove the so-called generalized Haff's law yielding the optimal algebraic cooling rate of the temperature of a granular gas described by the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic interactions with non constant restitution coefficient. Our analysis is carried through a careful study of the infinite system of moments of the solution to the Boltzmann equation for granular gases and precise Lp estimates in the selfsimilar variables. In the process, we generalize several results on the Boltzmann collision operator obtained recently for homogeneous granular gases with constant restitution coefficient to a broader class of physical restitution coefficients that depend on the collision impact velocity. This generalization leads to the so-called L1-exponential tails theorem. for this model.

Spectral analysis of transport equations with bounce-back boundary conditions

We investigate the spectral properties of the time-dependent linear transport equation with bounce-back boundary conditions. A fine analysis of the spectrum of the streaming operator is given and the explicit expression of the strongly continuous streaming semigroup is derived. Next, making use of a recent result from M. Sbihi \cite{Sbihi}, we prove, via a compactness argument, that the essential spectrum of the transport semigroup and that of the streaming semigroup coincide on all $L^p$-spaces with $1<p<\infty$.
