Boundary conditions for isolated asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes

We revisit the propagation of classical scalar fields in a spacetime which is asymptotically anti-de Sitter. The lack of global hyperbolicity of the underlying background gives rise to an ambiguity in the dynamical evolution of solutions of the wave equation, requiring the prescription of extra boundary conditions at the conformal infinity to be fixed. We show that the only boundary conditions tha are compatible with the hypothesis that the system is isolated, as defined by the (improved) energy-momentum tensor, are of Dirichlet and Neumann types.

Chaotic dynamics of a spinless axisymmetric extended body around a Schwarzschild black hole

We investigate the long-term orbital dynamics of spinless extended bodies in Schwarzschild geometry, and show that periodic deviations from spherical symmetry in the shape of a test body may trigger the onset of chaos. We do this by applying Dixon's formalism at quadrupolar order to a nearly spherical body whose shape oscillates between a prolate and an oblate spheroid. The late-time chaotic behavior is then verified by applying Melnikov's method.

Homoclinic chaos in the Hamiltonian dynamics of extended test bodies

There is a long tradition of studying chaotic trajectories in systems whose integrability is broken by means of an external perturbation. Here we explore a different route to chaos, in the dynamics of extended bodies, which arises due to finite-size corrections to the otherwise integrable motion of a test particle. We find that cyclic changes in the overall shape of the body may lead to the onset of chaos. This is applied to the Duffing and Yukawa potentials. For Kepler's potential, periodic deviations from spherical symmetry give rise to chaotic regions around the unperturbed parabolic orbit.

Analogue gravity and radial fluid flows: The case of AdS and its deformations

An analogue model for the $\text{AdS}_2$ spacetime has been recently introduced by Mosna, Pitelli and Richartz [Phys. Rev. D 94, 104065 (2016)] by considering sound waves propagating on a fluid with an ill-defined velocity profile at its source/sink. The wave propagation is then uniquely defined only when one imposes an extra boundary condition at the source/sink (which corresponds to the spatial infinity of $\text{AdS}_2$). Here we show that, once this velocity profile is smoothed out at the source/sink, the need for extra boundary conditions disappears. This, in turn, corresponds to deformations of the $\text{AdS}_2$ spacetime near its spatial infinity. We also examine how this regularization of the velocity profile picks up a specific boundary condition for the idealized system, so that both models agree in the long wavelength limit.

Analogue model for anti-de Sitter as a description of point sources in fluids

We introduce an analogue model for a nonglobally hyperbolic spacetime in terms of a two-dimensional fluid. This is done by considering the propagation of sound waves in a radial flow with constant velocity. We show that the equation of motion satisfied by sound waves is the wave equation on $AdS_2\times S^1$. Since this spacetime is not globally hyperbolic, the dynamics of the Klein-Gordon field is not well defined until boundary conditions at the spatial boundary of $AdS_2$ are prescribed. On the analogue model end, those extra boundary conditions provide an effective description of the point source at $r=0$. For waves with circular symmetry, we relate the different physical evolutions to the phase difference between ingoing and outgoing scattered waves. We also show that the fluid configuration can be stable or unstable depending on the chosen boundary condition.

The weirdest martensite: Smectic liquid crystal microstructure and Weyl-Poincaré invariance

Smectic liquid crystals are remarkable, beautiful examples of materials microstructure, with ordered patterns of geometrically perfect ellipses and hyperbolas. The solution of the complex problem of filling three-dimensional space with domains of focal conics under constraining boundary conditions yields a set of strict rules, which are similar to the compatibility conditions in a martensitic crystal. Here we present the rules giving compatible conditions for the concentric circle domains found at two-dimensional smectic interfaces with planar boundary conditions. Using configurations generated by numerical simulations, we develop a clustering algorithm to decompose the planar boundaries into domains. The interfaces between different domains agree well with the smectic compatibility conditions. We also discuss generalizations of our approach to describe the full three-dimensional smectic domains, where the variant symmetry group is the Weyl-Poincaré group of Lorentz boosts, translations, rotations, and dilatations.

Breaking the Rules for Topological Defects: Smectic Order on Conical Substrates

Ordered phases on curved substrates experience a complex interplay of ordering and intrinsic curvature, commonly producing frustration and singularities. This is an especially important issue in crystals as ever-smaller scale materials are grown on real surfaces; eventually, surface imperfections are on the same scale as the lattice constant. Here, we gain insights into this general problem by studying two-dimensional smectic order on substrates with highly localized intrinsic curvature, constructed from cones and their intersections with planes. In doing so we take advantage of fully tractable "paper and tape" constructions, allowing us to understand, in detail, the induced cusps and singularities.

New self-dual solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in Euclidean Schwarzschild space

We present a systematic study of spherically symmetric self-dual solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on Euclidean Schwarzschild space. All the previously known solutions are recovered and a new one-parameter family of instantons is obtained. The newly found solutions have continuous actions and interpolate between the classic Charap and Duff instantons. We examine the physical properties of this family and show that it consists of dyons of unit (magnetic and electric) charge.
