Relating Symmetrizations of Convex Bodies: Once More the Golden Ratio

We show that for any Minkowski centered planar convex compact set $C$ the Harmonic mean of $C$ and $-C$ can be optimally contained in the arithmetic mean of the same sets if and only if the Minkowski asymmetry of $C$ is at most the golden ratio $(1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618$. Moreover, the most asymmetric such set that is (up to a linear transformation) a special pentagon, which we call the golden house.

Is a complete, reduced set necessarily of constant width?

Is it true that a convex body $K$ being complete and reduced with respect to some gauge body $C$ is necessarily of constant width, that is, satisfies $K-K=ρ(C-C)$ for some $ρ>0$? We prove this implication for several cases including the following: if $K$ is a simplex and or if $K$ possesses a smooth extreme point, then the implication holds. Moreover, we derive several new results on perfect norms.

Minkowski concentricity and complete simplices

This paper considers the radii functionals (circumradius, inradius, and diameter) as well as the Minkowski asymmetry for general (possibly non-symmetric) gauge bodies. A generalization of the concentricity inequality (which states that the sum of the inradius and circumradius is not greater than the diameter in general Minkowski spaces) for non-symmetric gauge bodies is derived and a strong connection between this new inequality, extremal sets of the generalized Bohnenblust inequality, and completeness of simplices is revealed.

Improving Accuracy and Efficiency of Start-up Cost Formulations in MIP Unit Commitment by Modeling Power Plant Temperatures

This paper presents an improved mixed-integer model for the Thermal Unit Commitment Problem. By introducing new variables for the temperature of each thermal unit, the off-time-dependent start-up costs are modeled accurately and with a lower integrality gap than state-of-the-art formulations. This new approach significantly improves computational efficiency compared to existing formulations, even if they only model a rough approximation of the start-up costs. Our findings were validated on real-world test cases using CPLEX.

The asymmetry of complete and constant width bodies in general normed spaces and the Jung constant

In this paper we state a one-to-one connection between the maximal ratio of the circumradius and the diameter of a body (the Jung constant) in an arbitrary Minkowski space and the maximal Minkowski asymmetry of the complete bodies within that space. This allows to generalize and unify recent results on complete bodies and to derive a necessary condition on the unit ball of the space, assuming a given body to be complete. Finally, we state several corollaries, i.e. concerning the Helly dimension or the Banach-Mazur distance.

The Summed Start-up Costs in a Unit Commitment Problem

We consider the sum of the incurred start-up costs of a single unit in a Unit Commitment problem. Our major result is a correspondence between the facets of its epigraph and some binary trees for concave start-up cost functions CU, which is bijective if CU is strictly concave. We derive an exponential H-representation of this epigraph, and provide an exact linear separation algorithm. These results significantly reduce the integrality gap of the Mixed Integer formulation of a Unit Commitment Problem compared to current literature.

Implementing a Unit Commitment Power Market Model in FICO Xpress-Mosel

Starting from a basic Unit Commitment problem as published in [Carrión2006], we develop a fully functional, running implementation for Xpress Mosel, useable in power market modeling. The constraints of the model are discussed in details and solutions to left open implementation problems are presented, guidelines on how to handle data input (from both, databases and Excel), as well as data output (to Excel) are given.

Sharpening Geometric Inequalities using Computable Symmetry Measures

Many classical geometric inequalities on functionals of convex bodies depend on the dimension of the ambient space. We show that this dimension dependence may often be replaced (totally or partially) by different symmetry measures of the convex body. Since these coefficients are bounded by the dimension but possibly smaller, our inequalities sharpen the original ones. Since they can often be computed efficiently, the improved bounds may also be used to obtain better bounds in approximation algorithms.
