Dark Matter Induced Brownian Motion

We discuss a novel approach for directional, light dark matter searches inspired by the high precision position measurements achieved in gravitational wave detectors. If dark matter interacts with ordinary matter, movable masses are subject to an effect similar to Brownian motion induced by the scattering with dark matter particles which exhibits certain characteristics and could be observed. We provide estimates for the sensitivity of a hypothetical experiment looking for that motion. Interestingly, if successful, our approach would allow to constrain the local distribution of dark matter momentum.

A New Probe of Dark Sector Dynamics at the LHC

We propose a LHC search for dilepton resonances in association with large missing energy as a generic probe of TeV dark sector models. Such resonances can occur if the dark sector includes a U(1) gauge boson, or Z', which kinetically mixes with the Standard Model U(1). For small mixing, direct 2 to 1 production of the Z' is not visible in standard resonance searches due to the large Drell-Yan background. However, there may be significant production of the Z' boson in processes involving other dark sector particles, resulting in final states with a Z' resonance and missing transverse momentum. Examples of such processes include cascade decays within the dark sector and radiation of the Z' off of final state dark sector particles. Even when the rate to produce a Z' boson in a dark sector process is suppressed, this channel can provide better sensitivity than traditional collider probes of dark sectors such as monojet searches. We find that data from the 8 TeV LHC run can be interpreted to give bounds on such processes; more optimized searches could extend the sensitivity and continue to probe these models in the Run II data.

The Dark Penguin Shines Light at Colliders

Collider experiments are one of the most promising ways to constrain Dark Matter (DM) interactions. For several types of DM-Standard Model couplings, a meaningful interpretation of the results requires to go beyond effective field theory, considering simplified models with light mediators. This is especially important in the case of loop-mediated interactions. In this paper we perform the first simplified model study of the magnetic dipole interacting DM, by including the one-loop momentum-dependent form factors that mediate the coupling -- given by the Dark Penguin -- in collider processes. We compute bounds from the monojet, monophoton, and diphoton searches at the $8$ and $14$ TeV LHC, and compare the results to those of direct and indirect detection experiments. Future searches at the $100$ TeV hadron collider and at the ILC are also addressed. We find that the optimal search strategy requires loose cuts on the missing transverse energy, to capture the enhancement of the form factors near the threshold for on-shell production of the mediators. We consider both minimal models and models where an additional state beyond the DM is accessible. In the latter case, under the assumption of anarchic flavor structure in the dark sector, the LHC monophoton and diphoton searches will be able to set much stronger bounds than in the minimal scenario. A determination of the mass of the heavier dark fermion might be feasible using the $M_{T2}$ variable. In addition, if the Dark Penguin flavor structure is almost aligned with that of the DM mass, a displaced signal from the decay of the heavier dark fermion into the DM and photon can be observed. This allows us to set constraints on the mixings and couplings of the model from an existing search for non-pointing photons.

From gamma ray line signals of dark matter to the LHC

We explore the relationship between astrophysical gamma-ray signals and LHC signatures for a class of phenomenologically successful secluded dark matter models, motivated by recent evidence for a ~130 GeV gamma-ray line. We consider in detail scenarios in which interactions between the dark sector and the standard model are mediated by a vev-less scalar field ϕ, transforming as an N-plet (N > 3) under SU(2)_L. Since some of the component fields of ϕcarry large electric charges, loop induced dark matter annihilation to γγand γZ can be enhanced without the need for non-perturbatively large couplings, and without overproduction of continuum gamma-rays from other final states. We discuss prospects for other experimental tests, including dark matter-nucleon scattering and production of ϕat the LHC, where future searches for anomalous charged tracks may be sensitive. The first LHC hints could come from the Higgs sector, where loop corrections involving ϕlead to significantly modified h to γγand h to γZ branching ratios.

Measuring CP Violation in $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ at Colliders

We investigate the LHC and Higgs Factory prospects for measuring the CP phase in the Higgs-tau-tau coupling. Currently this phase can be anywhere between 0 degrees (CP even) and 90 degrees (CP odd). A new, ideal observable is identified from an analytic calculation for the $τ^\pm \to ρ^\pmν\to π^\pm π^0 ν$ channel. It is demonstrated to have promising sensitivity at the LHC and superior sensitivity at the ILC compared to previous proposals. Our observable requires the reconstruction of the internal substructure of decaying taus but does not rely on measuring the impact parameter of tau decays. It is the first proposal for such a measurement at the LHC. For the 14 TeV LHC, we estimate that about 1 ab$^{-1}$ data can discriminate CP-even versus CP-odd at the $5σ$ level. With 3 ab$^{-1}$, the CP phase should be measurable to an accuracy of $\sim 11$ degrees. At an $e^+e^-$ Higgs Factory, we project that a 250 GeV run with 1 ab$^{-1}$ luminosity can measure the phase to $\sim 4.4$ degrees accuracy.

New Physics Models of Direct CP Violation in Charm Decays

In view of the recent LHCb measurement of Delta A_CP, the difference between the time-integrated CP asymmetries in D --> K+K- and D --> pi+pi- decays, we perform a comparative study of the possible impact of New Physics degrees of freedom on the direct CP asymmetries in singly Cabibbo suppressed D meson decays. We systematically discuss scenarios with a minimal set of new degrees of freedom that have renormalizable couplings to the SM particles and that are heavy enough such that their effects on the D meson decays can be described by local operators. We take into account both constraints from low energy flavor observables, in particular D0-D0bar mixing, and from direct searches. While models that explain the large measured value for Delta A_CP with chirally enhanced chromomagnetic penguins are least constrained, we identify a few viable models that contribute to the D meson decays at tree level or through loop induced QCD penguins. We emphasize that such models motivate direct searches at the LHC.

Taking a Razor to Dark Matter Parameter Space at the LHC

Dark matter (DM) has been searched for at colliders in a largely model independent fashion by looking for an excess number of events involving a single jet, or photon, and missing energy. We investigate the possibility of looking for excesses in more inclusive jet channels. Events with multiple jets contain more information and thus more handles to increase the signal to background ratio. In particular, we adapt the recent CMS "razor" analysis from a search for supersymmetry to a search for DM. We consider simplified models where DM is a Dirac fermion that couples to the quarks of the Standard Model (SM) through exchange of vector or axial-vector mediators or to gluons through scalar exchange. We consider both light and heavy (leading to effective contact interactions) mediators. Since the razor analysis requires multiple jets in the final state, the data set is complementary to that used for the monojet search and thus the bounds can be combined.

A Froggatt-Nielsen Model for Leptophilic Scalar Dark Matter Decay

We construct a model of decaying, TeV-scale scalar dark matter motivated by data from the PAMELA and Fermi-LAT experiments. By introducing an appropriate Abelian discrete symmetry and an intermediate scale of vector-like states that are responsible for generating lepton Yukawa couplings, we show that Planck-suppressed corrections may lead to decaying dark matter that is leptophilic and has the desired lifetime. The dark matter candidate decays primarily to lepton/anti-lepton pairs, and at a subleading rate to final states with a lepton, anti-lepton and standard model Higgs boson. We show that the model can reproduce the observed positron flux and positron fraction while remaining consistent with the bounds on the cosmic ray antiproton flux.

On the Cosmic-Ray Spectra of Three-Body Lepton-Flavor-Violating Dark Matter Decays

We consider possible leptonic three-body decays of spin-1/2, charge-asymmetric dark matter. Assuming a general Dirac structure for the four-fermion contact interactions of interest, we study the cosmic-ray electron and positron spectra and show that good fits to the current data can be obtained for both charged-lepton-flavor-conserving and flavor-violating decay channels. We find that different choices for the Dirac structure of the underlying decay operator can be significantly compensated by different choices for the dark matter mass and lifetime. The decay modes we consider provide differing predictions for the cosmic-ray positron fraction at energies higher than those currently probed at the PAMELA experiment; these predictions might be tested at cosmic-ray detectors like AMS-02.

The Galactic Center Region Gamma Ray Excess from A Supersymmetric Leptophilic Higgs Model

In a recent paper by Hooper and Goodenough, data from the Fermi Gamma Ray Telescope was analyzed and an excess of gamma rays was claimed to be found in the emission spectrum from the Galactic Center Region. Hooper and Goodenough suggest that the claimed excess can be well explained by 7-10 GeV annihilating dark matter with a power law density profile if the dark matter annihilates predominantly to tau pairs. In this paper we present such a dark matter model by extending the MSSM to include four Higgs doublets and one scalar singlet. A Z2 symmetry is imposed that enforces a Yukawa structure so that the up quarks, down quarks, and leptons each receive mass from a distinct doublet. This leads to an enhanced coupling of scalars to leptons and allows the model to naturally achieve the required phenomenology in order to explain the gamma ray excess. Our model yields the correct dark matter thermal relic density and avoids collider bounds from measurements of the Z width as well as direct production at LEP.

Combined Constraints on Holographic Bosonic Technicolor

We consider a model of strong electroweak symmetry breaking in which the expectation value of an additional, possibly composite, scalar field is responsible for the generation of fermion masses. The dynamics of the strongly coupled sector is defined and studied via its holographic dual, and does not correspond to a simple, scaled-up version of QCD. We consider the bounds from perturbative unitarity, the S parameter, and the mass of the Higgs-like scalar. We show that the combination of these constraints leaves a relatively limited region of parameter space viable, and suggests the qualitative features of the model that might be probed at the LHC.

Decaying Dark Matter from Dark Instantons

We construct an explicit, TeV-scale model of decaying dark matter in which the approximate stability of the dark matter candidate is a consequence of a global symmetry that is broken only by instanton-induced operators generated by a non-Abelian dark gauge group. The dominant dark matter decay channels are to standard model leptons. Annihilation of the dark matter to standard model states occurs primarily through the Higgs portal. We show that the mass and lifetime of the dark matter candidate in this model can be chosen to be consistent with the values favored by fits to data from the PAMELA and Fermi LAT experiments.
