Asymptotic nonlocality in non-Abelian gauge theories

Asymptotically nonlocal field theories represent a sequence of higher-derivative theories whose limit point is a ghost-free, infinite-derivative theory. Here, we extend previous work on pure scalar and Abelian gauge theories to asymptotically nonlocal non-Abelian theories. In particular, we confirm that there is a limit in which the Lee-Wick spectrum can be decoupled, but where the hierarchy problem is resolved via an emergent nonlocal scale that regulates loop diagrams and that is hierarchically smaller than the lightest Lee-Wick resonance.

Asymptotic nonlocality in gauge theories

Asymptotically nonlocal field theories represent a sequence of higher-derivative theories whose limit point is a ghost-free, infinite-derivative theory. Here we extend this framework, developed previously in a theory of real scalar fields, to gauge theories. We focus primarily on asymptotically nonlocal scalar electrodynamics, first identifying equivalent gauge-invariant formulations of the Lagrangian, one with higher-derivative terms and the other with auxiliary fields instead. We then study mass renormalization of the complex scalar field in each formulation, showing that an emergent nonlocal scale (i.e., one that does not appear as a fundamental parameter in the Lagrangian of the finite-derivative theories) regulates loop integrals as the limiting theory is approached, so that quadratic divergences can be hierarchically smaller than the lightest Lee-Wick partner. We conclude by making preliminary remarks on the generalization of our approach to non-Abelian theories, including an asymptotically nonlocal standard model.

$T'$ Models with High Quality Flaxions

The "gauged'' Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism of Fukuda, Ibe, Suzuki and Yanagida is implemented in the flavorful axion model of Carone and Merchand. This model of flavor is similar to other successful ones based on the double tetrahedral group, but the flavor symmetry includes a global U(1) factor that leads to the presence of a flavorful axion. Here we gauge that U(1) symmetry and introduce a heavy sector that includes (1) the fermions necessary to cancel anomalies and (2) a second scalar flavon field that spontaneously breaks the U(1) symmetry. The full theory has an accidental U(1)$\times$U(1)$'$ global symmetry, anomalous with respect to QCD; U(1)$_\text{PQ}$ emerges as a linear combination. The gauged flavor symmetry restricts the possible PQ symmetry-breaking higher-dimension operators so that sufficient axion quality is preserved. We provide a model of the quark sector, as a proof of principle, and then a model which incorporates the standard model charged leptons as well. In both cases, the charge assignments that lead to acceptable axion quality also lead to a multiplicity of some of the heavy sector states; we check that the Landau pole for hypercharge remains above the cut off of the effective theory. We consider relevant phenomenological constraints on these models including those on the predicted axion couplings.

Composite Gravitons from Metric-Independent Quantum Field Theories

We review some recent work by Carone, Erlich and Vaman on composite gravitons in metric-independent quantum field theories, with the aim of clarifying a number of basic issues. Focusing on a theory of scalar fields presented previously in the literature, we clarify the meaning of the tunings required to obtain a massless graviton. We argue that this formulation can be interpreted as the massless limit of a theory of massive composite gravitons in which the graviton mass term is not of Pauli-Fierz form. We then suggest closely related theories that can be defined without such a limiting procedure (and hence without worry about possible ghosts). Finally, we comment on the importance of finding a compelling ultraviolet completion for models of this type, and discuss some possibilities.

Dante's Waterfall

We describe a hybrid axion-monodromy inflation model motivated by the Dante's Inferno scenario. In Dante's Inferno, a two-field potential features a stable trench along which a linear combination of the two fields slowly rolls, rendering the dynamics essentially identical to that of single-field chaotic inflation. A shift symmetry allows for the Lyth bound to be effectively evaded as in other axion-monodromy models. In our proposal, the potential is concave downward near the origin and the inflaton trajectory is a gradual downward spiral, ending at a point where the trench becomes unstable. There, the fields begin falling rapidly towards the minimum of the potential and inflation terminates as in a hybrid model. We find parameter choices that reproduce observed features of the cosmic microwave background, and discuss our model in light of recent results from the BICEP2 and Planck experiments.

Dark chiral symmetry breaking and the origin of the electroweak scale

We study a classically scale-invariant model in which strong dynamics in a dark sector sets the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. Our model is distinct from others of this type that have appeared in the recent literature. We show that the Higgs sector of the model is phenomenologically viable and that the spectrum of dark sector states includes a partially composite dark matter candidate.

Flavored axion-monodromy inflation

The hierarchy of fermion masses in the standard model may arise via the breaking of discrete gauge symmetries. The renormalizable interactions of the flavor-symmetry-breaking potential can have accidental global symmetries that are spontaneously broken, leading to pseudo-goldstone bosons that may drive inflation. We consider two-field, axion-monodromy inflation models in which the inflaton is identified with a linear combination of pseudo-goldstone bosons of the flavor sector. We show that the resulting models are nontrivially constrained by current cosmological data as well as the requirements of viable flavor model building.

A Permutation on Hybrid Natural Inflation

We analyze a model of hybrid natural inflation based on the smallest non-Abelian discrete group S_3. Leading invariant terms in the scalar potential have an accidental global symmetry that is spontaneously broken, providing a pseudo-Goldstone boson that is identified as the inflaton. The S_3 symmetry restricts both the form of the inflaton potential and the couplings of the inflaton field to the waterfall fields responsible for the end of inflation. We identify viable points in the model parameter space. Although the power in tensor modes is small in most of the parameter space of the model, we identify parameter choices that yield potentially observable values of r without super-Planckian initial values of the inflaton field.

Acausality from a Dark Sector

Solutions to the hierarchy problem that require partners for each standard model particle often require that these states live at or above the electroweak scale, to satisfy phenomenological bounds. Partners to possible dark sector particles may be significantly lighter, due to the assumed weakness of the couplings between the dark and visible sectors. Here we consider the possibility that a dark sector might include light Lee-Wick particles. We present the formulation of a theory in which a dark photon and its Lee-Wick partner have kinetic mixing with hypercharge. We point out that the Lee-Wick partner of the dark photon will lead to an apparent violation of causality at small distance scales that might be discerned in low-energy experiments.

LHC Constraints on the Lee-Wick Higgs Sector

We determine constraints on the Lee-Wick Higgs sector obtained from the full LHC Higgs boson data set. We determine the current lower bound on the heavy neutral Lee-Wick scalar, as well as projected bounds at a 14 TeV LHC with 300 and 3000 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity. We point out that the first sign of new physics in this model may be the observation of a deviation from standard model expectations of the lighter neutral Higgs signal strengths corresponding to production via gluon-gluon fusion and decay to either tau or $Z$ pairs. The signal strength of the latter is greater than the standard model expectation, unlike most extensions of the standard model.

Classical scale-invariance, the electroweak scale and vector dark matter

We consider a classically scale-invariant extension of the standard model in which a dark, non-Abelian gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. Higgs portal couplings between the dark and standard model sectors provide an origin for the Higgs mass squared parameter and, hence, the electroweak scale. We find that choices for model parameters exist in which the dark gauge multiplet is viable as dark matter.

Flavor-Nonuniversal Dark Gauge Bosons and the Muon g-2

The possibility of explaining the current value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment in models with an additional U(1) gauge symmetry that has kinetic mixing with hypercharge are increasingly constrained by dark photon searches at electron accelerators. Here we present a scenario in which the couplings of new, light gauge bosons to standard model leptons are naturally weak and flavor non-universal. A vector-like state that mixes with standard model leptons serves as a portal between the dark and standard model sectors. The flavor symmetry of the model assures that the induced couplings of the new gauge sector to leptons of the first generation are very small and lepton-flavor-violating processes are adequately suppressed. The model provides a framework for constructing ultraviolet complete theories in which new, light gauge fields couple weakly and dominantly to leptons of the second or third generations.

Deconstructing Superconductivity

We present a dimensionally deconstructed model of an s-wave holographic superconductor. The 2+1 dimensional model includes multiple charged Cooper pair fields and neutral exciton fields that have interactions governed by hidden local symmetries. We derive AdS/CFT-like relations for the current and charge density in the model, and we analyze properties of the Cooper pair condensates and the complex conductivity.

Technicolor with a 125 GeV Higgs Boson

Bosonic technicolor models accommodate fermion masses via a Higgs doublet that acquires a vacuum expectation value when technifermions condense. We point out that these models are severely constrained by vacuum stability if the Higgs boson mass is near 125 GeV, the value suggested by LHC data. The Higgs quartic coupling in bosonic technicolor is typically smaller at the weak scale than in the Standard Model, while the top quark Yukawa coupling is larger. We find that the running quartic coupling remains positive below a reasonably defined cut off only in a narrow region of the model's parameter space. This region is only slightly enlarged if one allows a metastable vacuum with a lifetime longer than the age of the universe.

A Froggatt-Nielsen Model for Leptophilic Scalar Dark Matter Decay

We construct a model of decaying, TeV-scale scalar dark matter motivated by data from the PAMELA and Fermi-LAT experiments. By introducing an appropriate Abelian discrete symmetry and an intermediate scale of vector-like states that are responsible for generating lepton Yukawa couplings, we show that Planck-suppressed corrections may lead to decaying dark matter that is leptophilic and has the desired lifetime. The dark matter candidate decays primarily to lepton/anti-lepton pairs, and at a subleading rate to final states with a lepton, anti-lepton and standard model Higgs boson. We show that the model can reproduce the observed positron flux and positron fraction while remaining consistent with the bounds on the cosmic ray antiproton flux.

On the Cosmic-Ray Spectra of Three-Body Lepton-Flavor-Violating Dark Matter Decays

We consider possible leptonic three-body decays of spin-1/2, charge-asymmetric dark matter. Assuming a general Dirac structure for the four-fermion contact interactions of interest, we study the cosmic-ray electron and positron spectra and show that good fits to the current data can be obtained for both charged-lepton-flavor-conserving and flavor-violating decay channels. We find that different choices for the Dirac structure of the underlying decay operator can be significantly compensated by different choices for the dark matter mass and lifetime. The decay modes we consider provide differing predictions for the cosmic-ray positron fraction at energies higher than those currently probed at the PAMELA experiment; these predictions might be tested at cosmic-ray detectors like AMS-02.

Combined Constraints on Holographic Bosonic Technicolor

We consider a model of strong electroweak symmetry breaking in which the expectation value of an additional, possibly composite, scalar field is responsible for the generation of fermion masses. The dynamics of the strongly coupled sector is defined and studied via its holographic dual, and does not correspond to a simple, scaled-up version of QCD. We consider the bounds from perturbative unitarity, the S parameter, and the mass of the Higgs-like scalar. We show that the combination of these constraints leaves a relatively limited region of parameter space viable, and suggests the qualitative features of the model that might be probed at the LHC.

preprint2010arXiv

Decaying Dark Matter from Dark Instantons

We construct an explicit, TeV-scale model of decaying dark matter in which the approximate stability of the dark matter candidate is a consequence of a global symmetry that is broken only by instanton-induced operators generated by a non-Abelian dark gauge group. The dominant dark matter decay channels are to standard model leptons. Annihilation of the dark matter to standard model states occurs primarily through the Higgs portal. We show that the mass and lifetime of the dark matter candidate in this model can be chosen to be consistent with the values favored by fits to data from the PAMELA and Fermi LAT experiments.

Higher-Derivative Lee-Wick Unification

We consider gauge coupling unification in Lee-Wick extensions of the Standard Model that include higher-derivative quadratic terms beyond the minimally required set. We determine how the beta functions are modified when some Standard Model particles have two Lee-Wick partners. We show that gauge coupling unification can be achieved in such models without requiring the introduction of additional fields in the higher-derivative theory and we comment on possible ultraviolet completions.

Optimal Parametrization of Deviations from Tribimaximal Form of the Neutrino Mass Matrix

We obtain a general parametrization for the neutrino Majorana mass matrix in which all possible deviations from tribimaximal mixing are given by three complex parameters, and the deviation from each tribimaximal mixing eigenvector is identified with precisely two of them. This parametrization provides a useful tool for classifying the corrections to exact tribimaximal mixing in flavor models.

Phenomenology of Noncommutative Field Theories

Experimental limits on the violation of four-dimensional Lorentz invariance imply that noncommutativity among ordinary spacetime dimensions must be small. In this talk, I review the most stringent bounds on noncommutative field theories and suggest a possible means of evading them: noncommutativity may be restricted to extra, compactified spatial dimensions. Such theories have a number of interesting features, including Abelian gauge fields whose Kaluza-Klein excitations have self couplings. We consider six-dimensional QED in a noncommutative bulk, and discuss the collider signatures of the model.

Phenomenology of the Pentaquark Antidecuplet

We consider the mass splittings and strong decays of members of the lowest-lying pentaquark multiplet, which we take to be a parity-odd antidecuplet. We derive useful decompositions of the quark model wave functions that allow for easy computation of color-flavor-spin matrix elements. We compute mass splittings within the antidecuplet including spin-color and spin-isospin interactions between constituents and point out the importance of hidden strangeness in rendering the nucleon-like states heavier than the S=1 state. Using recent experimental data on a possible S=1 pentaquark state, we make decay predictions for other members of the antidecuplet.

Positive Parity Pentaquarks Pragmatically Predicted

We consider the possibility that the lightest pentaquark is a parity even state, with one unit of orbital angular momentum. Working within the framework of a constituent quark model, we show that dominant spin-flavor interactions render certain parity-even states lighter than any pentaquark with all quarks in the spatial ground state. For such states, we focus on predicting the mass and decays of other members of the same SU(3) flavor multiplet. Specifically, we consider the strangeness -2 cascade pentaquarks, which are relatively immune to mixing. We take into account flavor SU(3) breaking effects originating from the strange quark mass as well as from the structure of the spin-flavor exchange interactions themselves. We predict the lightest cascade pentaquarks at approximately 1906 MeV, with a full width about 3 times larger than that of the Theta^+.

Bulk Majorons at Colliders

Lepton number violation may arise via the spontaneous breakdown of a global symmetry. In extra dimensions, spontaneous lepton number violation in the bulk implies the existence of a Goldstone boson, the majoron J^(0), as well as an accompanying tower of Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations, J^(n). Even if the zero-mode majoron is very weakly interacting, so that detection in low-energy processes is difficult, the sum over the tower of KK modes may partially compensate in processes of relevance at high-energy colliders. Here we consider the inclusive differential and total cross sections for e^- e^- --> W^- W^- J, where J represents a sum over KK modes. We show that allowed parameter choices exist for which this process may be accessible to a TeV-scale electron collider.

Bounding Noncommutative QCD

Jurco, Moller, Schraml, Schupp, and Wess have shown how to construct noncommutative SU(N) gauge theories from a consistency relation. Within this framework, we present the Feynman rules for noncommutative QCD and compute explicitly the most dangerous Lorentz-violating operator generated through radiative corrections. We find that interesting effects appear at the one-loop level, in contrast to conventional noncommutative U(N) gauge theories, leading to a stringent bound. Our results are consistent with others appearing recently in the literature that suggest collider limits are not competitive with low-energy tests of Lorentz violation for bounding the scale of spacetime noncommutativity.

Orthogonal U(1)'s, Proton Stability and Extra Dimensions

In models with a low quantum gravity scale, one might expect that all operators consistent with gauge symmetries are present in the low-energy effective theory. If this is the case, some mechanism must be present to adequately suppress operators that violate baryon number. Here we explore the possibility that the desired suppression is a consequence of an additional, spontaneously-broken, non-anomalous U(1) symmetry that is orthogonal to hypercharge. We show that successful models can be constructed in which the additional particle content necessary to cancel anomalies is minimal, and compatible with the constraints from precision electroweak measurements and gauge unification. If unification is sacrificed, and only the new U(1) and its associated Higgs fields live in the bulk, it is possible that the gauge field zero mode and first few Kaluza-Klein excitations lie within the kinematic reach of the Tevatron. For gauge couplings not much smaller than that of hypercharge, we show that these highly leptophobic states could evade detection at Run I, but be discovered at Run II. Our scenario presents an alternative to the `cartographic' solution to baryon number violation in which leptons and quarks are separated in an extra dimension.

U(2) Flavor Physics without U(2) Symmetry

We present a model of fermion masses based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry that reproduces the Yukawa matrices usually associated with U(2) theories of flavor. Mass and mixing angle relations that follow from the simple form of the quark and charged lepton Yukawa textures are therefore common to both theories. We show that the differing representation structure of our horizontal symmetry allows for new solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems that do not involve modification of the original charged fermion Yukawa textures, or the introduction of sterile neutrinos.

A Hexagonal Theory of Flavor

We construct a supersymmetric theory of flavor based on the discrete gauge group (D_6)^2, where D_6 describes the symmetry of a regular hexagon under proper rotations in three dimensions. The representation structure of the group allows one to distinguish the third from the lighter two generations of matter fields, so that in the symmetry limit only the top quark Yukawa coupling is allowed and scalar superpartners of the first two generations are degenerate. Light fermion Yukawa couplings arise from a sequential breaking of the flavor symmetry, and supersymmetric flavor-changing processes remain adequately suppressed. We contrast our model with others based on non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries described in the literature, and discuss the challenges in constructing more minimal flavor models based on this approach.

Masses of Orbitally Excited Baryons in Large N_c QCD

We present the first phenomenological study of the masses of orbitally excited baryons in large N_c QCD. Restricting here to the nonstrange sector of the L=1 baryons, the 1/N_c expansion is used to order and select a basis of effective operators that spans the nine observables (seven masses and two mixing angles). Fits are performed using subsets of the complete set of nine operators, including corrections up to O(1/N_c) where leading order is N_c^1. This study shows that the 1/N_c expansion provides an excellent framework for analyzing the mass spectrum, and uncovers a new hierarchy of operator contributions.

Operator Analysis of L=1 Baryon Masses in Large N_c QCD

We consider in detail the mass operator analysis for the nonstrange L=1 excited baryons in large N_c QCD. We present a straightforward procedure for constructing the large N_c baryon wavefunctions, and provide complete analytic expressions for the matrix elements of all the independent isosinglet mass operators. We discuss the relationship between the old-fashioned operator analyses based on nonrelativistic SU(6) symmetry and the modern large N_c approach, which has a firmer theoretical foundation. We then suggest a possible dynamical interpretation for the subset of operators preferred strongly by the data.

Neutrino physics from a U(2) flavor symmetry

We consider the neutrino physics of models with a sequentially broken U(2) flavor symmetry. Such theories yield the observed pattern of quark and lepton masses, while maintaining sufficient degeneracies between superparticles of the first two generations to solve the supersymmetric flavor problem. Neutrino mass ratios and mixing angles in these models may differ significantly from those of the charged leptons, even though the neutrinos and charged leptons transform identically under the flavor group. A wide class of well-motivated U(2) theories yield order one $ν_μ- ν_τ$ mixing, without a fine-tuning of parameters. These models provide a natural solution to the atmospheric neutrino deficit, and also have distinctive signatures at long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

New Mechanism of Flavor Symmetry Breaking from Supersymmetric Strong Dynamics

We present a class of supersymmetric models in which flavor symmetries are broken dynamically, by a set of composite flavon fields. The strong dynamics that is responsible for confinement in the flavor sector also drives flavor symmetry breaking vacuum expectation values, as a consequence of a quantum-deformed moduli space. Yukawa couplings result as a power series in the ratio of the confinement to Planck scale, and the fermion mass hierarchy depends on the differing number of preons in different flavor symmetry-breaking operators. We present viable non-Abelian and Abelian flavor models that incorporate this mechanism.

(S_3)^3 Theories of Flavor

I present a supersymmetric theory of flavor based on the discrete flavor group $(S_3)^3$. The model can account for the masses and mixing angles of the standard model, while maintaining sufficient sfermion degeneracy to evade the supersymmetric flavor problem. I demonstrate that the model has a viable phenomenology and makes one very striking prediction: the nucleon decays predominantly to $K l$ where $l$ is a {\em first} generation lepton. I show that the modes $n \rightarrow K^0 \barν_e$, $p\rightarrow K^+ \barν_e$, and $p\rightarrow K^0 e^+$ occur at comparable rates, and could well be discovered simultaneously at the SuperKamiokande experiment.

REALISTIC MODELS WITH A LIGHT U(1) GAUGE BOSON COUPLED TO BARYON NUMBER

We recently showed that a new gauge boson $γ_B$ coupling only to baryon number is phenomenologically allowed, even if $m_B<m_Z$ and $α_B \approx 0.2$. In our previous work we assumed that kinetic mixing between the baryon number and hypercharge gauge bosons (via an $F^{μν}_B F_{μν}^Y$ term) was small enough to evade constraints from precision electroweak measurements. In this paper we propose a class of models in which this term is naturally absent above the electroweak scale. We show that the generation of a mixing term through radiative corrections in the low-energy effective theory does not lead to conflict with precision electroweak measurements and may provide a leptonic signal for models of this type at an upgraded Tevatron.

Flavor Changing Neutral Currents in a Realistic Composite Technicolor Model

We consider the phenomenology of a composite technicolor model proposed recently by Georgi. Composite technicolor interactions produce four-quark operators in the low energy theory that contribute to flavor changing neutral current processes. While we expect operators of this type to be induced at the compositeness scale by the flavor-symmetry breaking effects of the preon mass matrices, the Georgi model also includes operators from higher scales that are not GIM-suppressed. Since these operators are potentially large, we study their impact on flavor changing neutral currents and CP violation in the neutral $B$, $D$, and $K$ meson systems.
