Bond order via cavity-mediated interactions

We numerically study the phase diagram of bosons tightly trapped in the lowest band of an optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a single-mode cavity field. The dynamics is encompassed by an extended Bose-Hubbard model. Here, the cavity-mediated interactions are described by a two-body potential term with a global range and by a correlated tunneling term where the hopping amplitude depends on a global observable. We determine the ground state properties in one dimension by means of the density matrix renormalization group algorithm, focusing on the effects due to the correlated tunneling. The latter is responsible for the onset of bond orders, manifesting in one insulating and two gapless bond ordered phases. We discuss the resulting phases for different geometries that correspond to different relative strengths of the correlated tunneling coefficient. We finally analyze the scaling of the entanglement entropy in the gapless bond ordered phases that appear entirely due to global interactions and determine the corresponding central charges.

Quantum phases of dipolar bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices

We theoretically analyze the phase diagram of a quantum gas of bosons that interact via repulsive dipolar interactions. The bosons are tightly confined by an optical lattice in a quasi one-dimensional geometry. In the single-band approximation, their dynamics is described by an extended Bose-Hubbard model where the relevant contributions of the dipolar interactions consist of density-density repulsion and correlated tunneling terms. We evaluate the phase diagram for unit density using numerical techniques based on the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. Our results predict that correlated tunneling can significantly modify the parameter range of the topological insulator phase. At vanishing values of the onsite interactions, moreover, correlated tunneling promotes the onset of a phase with a large number of low energy metastable configurations.

Superfluid phases induced by the dipolar interactions

We determine the quantum ground state of dipolar bosons in a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice and interacting via $s$-wave scattering. The Hamiltonian is an extended Bose-Hubbard model which includes hopping terms due to the interactions. We identify the parameter regime for which the coefficients of the interaction-induced hopping terms become negative. For these parameters we numerically determine the phase diagram for a canonical ensemble and by means of density matrix renormalization group. We show that at sufficiently large values of the dipolar strength there is a quantum interference between the tunneling due to single-particle effects and the one due to the interactions. Because of this phenomenon, incompressible phases appear at relatively large values of the single-particle tunneling rates. This quantum interference cuts the phase diagram into two different, disconnected superfluid phases. In particular, at vanishing kinetic energy, the phase is always superfluid with a staggered superfluid order parameter. These dynamics emerge from quantum interference phenomena between quantum fluctuations and interactions and shed light into their role in determining the thermodynamic properties of quantum matter.

Localization transition in presence of cavity backaction

We study the localization transition of an atom confined by an external optical lattice in a high-finesse cavity. The atom-cavity coupling yields an effective secondary lattice potential, whose wavelength is incommensurate with the periodicity of the optical lattice. The cavity lattice can induce localization of the atomic wave function analogously to the Aubry-André localization transition. Starting from the master equation for the cavity and the atom we perform a mapping of the system dynamics to a Hubbard Hamiltonian, which can be reduced to the Harper's Hamiltonian in appropriate limits. We evaluate the phase diagram for the atom ground state and show that the transition between extended and localized wavefunction is controlled by the strength of the cavity nonlinearity, which determines the size of the localized region and the behaviour of the Lyapunov exponent. The Lyapunov exponent, in particular, exhibits resonance-like behaviour in correspondence with the optomechanical resonances. Finally we discuss the experimental feasibility of these predictions.
