Magnetic Field-Enhanced Graphene Superconductivity with Record Pauli-Limit Violation

Spin-polarized superconductors offer a rare platform for studying electronic correlations, but few candidate systems have been experimentally confirmed to date. Here, we report the observation of a spin-polarized superconducting state, denoted SC5, in WSe2-proximitized rhombohedral trilayer graphene. At in-plane magnetic field B|| = 0 T, SC5 has a critical temperature of 68 mK and an out-of-plane critical magnetic field of only 12 mT. Surprisingly, these values are significantly enhanced as B|| increases, and the superconductivity persists to B|| = 8.8 T. This value corresponds to a record-high Pauli-limit violation ratio of at least 80 among all superconductors, while the true critical field is beyond the limit of our instrument. We conclude that SC5 experiences a canting crossover from Ising-type to spin-polarized superconductor with increased B||.

Development of a sub-mK Continuous Nuclear Demagnetization Refrigerator

We present the development of a two-stage PrNi$_5$ continuous demagnetization refrigerator at the Institut Néel/CNRS and numerical simulations of its performance. The thermal model used in the simulations is discussed in detail including the likely sources of heating. We demonstrate the effects of the critical thermal links including superconducting heat switches as well as the heat conductivity of the PrNi$_5$, accounting for the dependence of cooling power on the PrNi$_5$ rod diameter. Our simulations show that if extreme care is taken to minimize the thermal resistance between the nuclear stages, a sample temperature of 1~mK can be maintained under a 20~nW heat load.

Majorana Fermions: Direct Observation in 3He

In this letter we report the first direct observation of gap-less Majorana QPs which appear as Andreev bound states on the surface of superfluid $^3$He-B. We made the precise measurements of superfluid 3He-B heat capacity at the limit of extremely low temperatures. We have separated the heat capacity of bulk Bogolyubov QPs and the surface Majorana QPs by its different temperature dependence. We have found that at 0.11 mK the Majorana fermions constitute half of the bolometer heat capacity under the conditions of our experiments.
