Large-time asymptotic of heavy tailed renewal processes

We study the large-time asymptotic of renewal-reward processes with a heavy-tailed waiting time distribution. It is known that the heavy tail of the distribution produces an extremely slow dynamics, resulting in a singular large deviation function. When the singularity takes place, the bottom of the large deviation function is flattened, manifesting anomalous fluctuations of the renewal-reward processes. In this article, we aim to study how these singularities emerge as the time increases. Using a classical result on the sum of random variables with regularly varying tail, we develop an expansion approach to prove an upper bound of the finite-time moment generating function for the Pareto waiting time distribution (power law) with an integer exponent. We perform numerical simulations using Pareto (with a real value exponent), inverse Rayleigh and log-normal waiting time distributions, and demonstrate similar results are anticipated in these waiting time distributions.

Fick's law in a random lattice Lorentz gas

We provide a proof that the stationary macroscopic current of particles in a random lattice Lorentz gas satisfies Fick's law when connected to particles reservoirs. We consider a box on a d+1 dimensional lattice and when $d\geq7$, we show that under a diffusive rescaling of space and time, the probability to find a current different from its stationary value is exponentially small in time. Its stationary value is given by the conductivity times the difference of chemical potentials of the reservoirs. The proof is based on the fact that in high dimension, random walks have a small probability of making loops or intersecting each other when starting sufficiently far apart.

Macroscopic diffusion from a Hamilton-like dynamics

We introduce and analyze a model for the transport of particles or energy in extended lattice systems. The dynamics of the model acts on a discrete phase space at discrete times but has nonetheless some of the characteristic properties of Hamiltonian dynamics in a confined phase space : it is deterministic, periodic, reversible and conservative. Randomness enters the model as a way to model ignorance about initial conditions and interactions between the components of the system. The orbits of the particles are non-intersecting random loops. We prove, by a weak law of large number, the validity of a diffusion equation for the macroscopic observables of interest for times that are arbitrary large, but small compared to the minimal recurrence time of the dynamics.

Large deviations for a random speed particle

We investigate large deviations for the empirical measure of the position and momentum of a particle traveling in a box with hot walls. The particle travels with uniform speed from left to right, until it hits the right boundary. Then it is absorbed and re-emitted from the left boundary with a new random speed, taken from an i.i.d. sequence. It turns out that this simple model, often used to simulate a heat bath, displays unusually complex large deviations features, that we explain in detail. In particular, if the tail of the update distribution of the speed is sufficiently oscillating, then the empirical measure does not satisfy a large deviations principle, and we exhibit optimal lower and upper large deviations functionals.

Large deviations for renewal processes

We investigate large deviations for the empirical measure of the forward and backward recurrence time processes associated with a classical renewal process with arbitrary waiting-time distribution. The Donsker-Varadhan theory cannot be applied in this case, and indeed it turns out that the large deviations rate functional differs from the one suggested by such a theory. In particular, a non-strictly convex and non-analytic rate functional is obtained.

Hot scatterers and tracers for the transfer of heat in collisional dynamics

We introduce stochastic models for the transport of heat in systems described by local collisional dynamics. The dynamics consists of tracer particles moving through an array of hot scatterers describing the effect of heat baths at fixed temperatures. Those models have the structure of Markov renewal processes. We study their ergodic properties in details and provide a useful formula for the cumulant generating function of the time integrated energy current. We observe that out of thermal equilibrium, the generating function is not analytic. When the set of temperatures of the scatterers is fixed by the condition that in average no energy is exchanged between the scatterers and the system, different behaviours may arise. When the tracer particles are allowed to travel freely through the whole array of scatterers, the temperature profile is linear. If the particles are locked in between scatterers, the temperature profile becomes nonlinear. In both cases, the thermal conductivity is interpreted as a frequency of collision between tracers and scatterers.
