Critical regularity issues for the compressible Navier--Stokes system in bounded domains

We are concerned with the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (with $d\geq2$). In a critical regularity setting, we establish local well-posedness for large data with no vacuum and global well-posedness for small perturbations of a stable constant equilibrium state. Our results rely on new maximal regularity estimates - of independent interest - for the semigroup of the Lam\{é} operator, and of the linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations.

Global existence for partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the Lp framework, and relaxation limit

Here we investigate global strong solutions for a class of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the framework of critical homogeneous Besov spaces. Our primary goal is to extend the analysis of our previous paper [10] to a functional framework where the low frequencies of the solution are only bounded in L p-type spaces with p larger than 2. This enables us to prescribe weaker smallness conditions for global well-posedness and to get a more accurate information on the qualitative properties of the constructed solutions. Our existence theorem in particular applies to the multi-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler system with relaxation, and provide us with bounds that are independent of the relaxation parameter. As a consequence, we justify rigorously the relaxation limit to the porous media equation and exhibit explicit rates of convergence for suitable norms, a completely new result to the best of our knowledge.

Global unique solutions for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equation with only bounded density, in critical regularity spaces

We here aim at proving the global existence and uniqueness of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system in the case where the initial density is discontinuous and the initial velocity has critical regularity. Assuming that the initial density is close to a positive constant, we obtain global existence and uniqueness in the two-dimensional case whenever the initial velocity belongs to some critical homogeneous Besov space (and in small in the three-dimensional case). Next, still in a critical functional framework, we establish a uniqueness statement that is valid in the case of large variations of density with, possibly, vacuum. Interestingly, our result implies that the Fujita-Kato type solutions constructed by P. Zhang in are unique. Our work relies on interpolation results, time weighted estimates and maximal regularity estimates in Lorentz spaces (with respect to the time variable) for the evolutionary Stokes system.

Compressible Navier-Stokes equations with ripped density

Here we prove the all-time propagation of the Sobolev regularity for the velocity field solution of the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations, provided the volume (bulk) viscosity coefficient is large enough. The initial velocity can be arbitrarily large and the initial density is just required to be bounded. In particular, one can consider a characteristic function of a set as an initial density. Uniqueness of the solutions to the equations is shown, in the case of a perfect gas. As a by-product of our results, we give a rigorous justification of the convergence to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations when the volume viscosity tends to infinity. Similar results are proved in the three-dimensional case, under some scaling invariant smallness condition on the velocity field.

A well-posedness result for viscous compressible fluids with only bounded density

We are concerned with the existence and uniqueness of solutions with only bounded density for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Assuming that the initial velocity has slightly sub-critical regularity and that the initial density is a small perturbation (in the $L^\infty$ norm) of a positive constant, we prove the existence of local-in-time solutions. In the case where the density takes two constant values across a smooth interface (or, more generally, has striated regularity with respect to some nondegenerate family of vector-fields), we get uniqueness. This latter result supplements the work by D. Hoff in [26] with a uniqueness statement, and is valid in any dimension $d\geq2$ and for general pressure laws.

Compressible Navier-Stokes system : large solutions and incompressible limit

Here we prove the existence of global in time regular solutions to the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with arbitrary large initial velocity $v\_0$ and almost constantdensity $\varrho\_0$, for large volume (bulk) viscosity. The result is generalized to the higher dimensional case under the additional assumption that the strong solution of the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with the divergence-freeprojection of $v\_0,$ is global. The systems are examined in $R^d$ with $d \geq 2$, in the critical $\dot B^s\_{2,1}$ Besov spaces framework.

Global persistence of geometrical structures for the boussinesq equation with no diffusion

Here we investigate the so-called temperature patch problem for the incompressible Boussinesq system with partial viscosity, in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ $(N \geq 2)$, where the initial temperature is the characteristic function of some simply connected domain with $C^{1, \varepsilon}$ H{ö}lder regularity. Although recent results in [1, 15] ensure that an initially $C^1$ patch persists through the evolution, whether higher regularity is preserved has remained an open question. In the present paper, we give a positive answer to that issue globally in time, in the 2-D case for large initial data and in the higher dimension case for small initial data.

On the persistence of Hölder regular patches of density for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations

In our recent work dedicated to the Boussinesq equations [Danchin and Zhang 2016], we established the persistence of solutions with piecewise constant temperature along interfaces with Hölder regularity. We here address the same problem for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations satisfied by a viscous incompressibleand inhomogeneous fluid. We establish that, indeed, in the slightly inhomogeneous case, patches of densities with $\mathcal{C}^{1, \varepsilon}$ regularity propagate for all time. As in [Danchin and Zhang 2016], our result follows from the conservation of Hölder regularityalong vector fields moving with the flow. The proof of that latter result is based on commutator estimates involving para-vector fields, and multiplier spaces. The overall analysis is more complicated than in [Danchin and Zhang 2016] however, since the coupling between the mass and velocity equations in the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations is \emph{quasilinear} while it is linear for the Boussinesq equations.

Optimal time-decay estimates for the compressible navier-stokes equations in the critical l p framework

The global existence issue for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the critical regularity framework has been addressed in [7] more than fifteen years ago. However, whether (optimal) time-decay rates could be shown in general critical spaces and any dimension d $\ge$ 2 has remained an open question. Here we give a positive answer to that issue not only in the L 2 critical framework of [7] but also in the more general L p critical framework of [3, 6, 14]. More precisely, we show that under a mild additional decay assumption that is satisfied if the low frequencies of the initial data are in e.g. L p/2 (R d), the L p norm (the slightly stronger $\dot B^0_{p,1}$ norm in fact) of the critical global solutions decays like t --d(1 p -- 1 4) for t $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$, exactly as firstly observed by A. Matsumura and T. Nishida in [23] in the case p = 2 and d = 3, for solutions with high Sobolev regularity. Our method relies on refined time weighted inequalities in the Fourier space, and is likely to be effective for other hyperbolic/parabolic systems that are encountered in fluid mechanics or mathematical physics.

Diffusive limits for a barotropic model of radiative flow

Here we aim at justifying rigorously different types of physically relevant diffusive limits for radiative flows. For simplicity, we consider the barotropic situation, and adopt the so-called P1-approximation of the radiative transfer equation. In the critical functional framework, we establish the existence of global-in-time strong solutions corresponding to small enough data, and exhibit uniform estimates with respect to the coefficients of the system. Combining with standard compactness arguments, this enables us to justify rigorously the convergence of the solutions to the expected limit systems. Our results hold true in the whole space as well as in a periodic box in dimension n $\ge$ 2.

Fourier analysis methods for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations

In the last three decades, Fourier analysis methods have known a growing importance in the study of linear and nonlinear PDE's. In particular, techniques based on Littlewood-Paley decomposition and paradifferential calculus have proved to be very efficient for investigating evolutionary fluid mechanics equations in the whole space or in the torus. We here give an overview of results that we can get by Fourier analysis and paradifferential calculus, for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. We focus on the Initial Value Problem in the case where the fluid domain is the whole space or the torus in dimension at least two, and also establish some asymptotic properties of global small solutions. The time decay estimates in the critical regularity framework that are stated at the end of the survey are new, to the best of our knowledge.

A Lagrangian approach for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations

Here we investigate the Cauchy problem for the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations in R^n, in the critical Besov spaces setting. We improve recent results as regards the uniqueness condition: initial velocities in critical Besov spaces with (not too) \emph{negative} indices generate a unique local solution. Apart from (critical) regularity, the initial density just has to be bounded away from 0 and to tend to some positive constant at infinity. Density-dependent viscosity coefficients may be considered. Using Lagrangian coordinates is the key to our statements as it enables us to solve the system by means of the basic contraction mapping theorem. As a consequence, conditions for uniqueness are the same as for existence, and Lipschitz continuity of the flow map (in Lagrangian coordinates) is established.

On the well-posedness of the full compressible Navier-Stokes system in critical Besov spaces

We are concerned with the Cauchy problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations satisfied by viscous and heat conducting fluids in $\mathbb{R}^n.$ We focus on the so-called critical Besov regularity framework. In this setting, it is natural to consider initial densities $ρ_0,$ velocity fields $u_0$ and temperatures $θ_0$ with $a_0:=ρ_0-1\in\dot B^{\frac np}_{p,1},$ $u_0\in\dot B^{\frac np-1}_{p,1}$ and $θ_0\in\dot B^{\frac np-2}_{p,1}.$ After recasting the whole system in Lagrangian coordinates, and working with the \emph{total energy along the flow} rather than with the temperature, we discover that the system may be solved by means of Banach fixed point theorem in a critical functional framework whenever the space dimension is $n\geq2,$ and $1<p<2n.$ Back to Eulerian coordinates, this allows to improve the range of $p$'s for which the system is locally well-posed, compared to Danchin, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 26 (2001).

The incompressible limit in $L^p$ type critical spaces

This paper aims at justifying the low Mach number convergence to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for viscous compressible flows in the ill-prepared data case. The fluid domain is either the whole space, or the torus. A number of works have been dedicated to this classical issue, all of them being, to our knowledge, related to $L^2$ spaces and to energy type arguments. In the present paper, we investigate the low Mach number convergence in the $L^p$ type critical regularity framework. More precisely, in the barotropic case, the divergence-free part of the initial velocity field just has to be bounded in the critical Besov space $\dot B^{d/p-1}_{p,r}\cap\dot B^{-1}_{\infty,1}$ for some suitable $(p,r)\in[2,4]\times[1,+\infty].$ We still require $L^2$ type bounds on the low frequencies of the potential part of the velocity and on the density, though, an assumption which seems to be unavoidable in the ill-prepared data framework, because of acoustic waves. In the last part of the paper, our results are extended to the full Navier-Stokes system for heat conducting fluids.

The Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation in critical spaces

In this paper we study the validity of the so-called Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation for compressible viscous perfect gases in the whole three-dimensional space. Both the cases of uids with positive heat conductivity and zero conductivity are considered. For small perturbations of a constant equilibrium, we establish the global existence of unique strong solutions in a critical regularity functional framework. Next, taking advantage of Strichartz estimates for the associated system of acoustic waves, and of uniform estimates with respect to the Mach number, we obtain all-time convergence to the Boussinesq system with a explicit decay rate.

The well-posedness issue for the density-dependent Euler equations in endpoint Besov spaces

This work is the continuation of the recent paper \cite{D2} devoted to the density-dependent incompressible Euler equations. Here we concentrate on the well-posedness issue in Besov spaces of type $B^s_{\infty,r}$ embedded in the set of Lipschitz continuous functions, a functional framework which contains the particular case of Hölder spaces and of the endpoint Besov space $B^1_{\infty,1}.$ For such data and under the nonvacuum assumption, we establish the local well-posedness and a continuation criterion in the spirit of that of Beale, Kato and Majda in \cite{BKM}. In the last part of the paper, we give lower bounds for the lifespan of a solution. In dimension two, we point out that the lifespan tends to infinity when the initial density tends to be a constant. This is, to our knowledge, the first result of this kind for the density-dependent incompressible Euler equations.

Incompressible flows with piecewise constant density

We investigate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable density. The aim is to prove existence and uniqueness results in the case of discontinuous ini- tial density. In dimension n = 2, 3, assuming only that the initial density is bounded and bounded away from zero, and that the initial velocity is smooth enough, we get the local-in-time existence of unique solutions. Uniqueness holds in any dimension and for a wider class of velocity fields. Let us emphasize that all those results are true for piecewise constant densities with arbitrarily large jumps. Global results are established in dimension two if the density is close enough to a positive constant, and in n-dimension if, in addition, the initial velocity is small. The Lagrangian formula- tion for describing the flow plays a key role in the analysis that is proposed in the present paper.

New maximal regularity results for the heat equation in exterior domains, and applications

This paper is dedicated to the proof of new maximal regularity results involving Besov spaces for the heat equation in the half-space or in bounded or exterior domains of R^n. We strive for time independent a priori estimates in regularity spaces of type L^1(0,T;X) where X stands for some homogeneous Besov space. In the case of bounded domains, the results that we get are similar to those of the whole space or of the half-space. For exterior domains, we need to use mixed Besov norms in order to get a control on the low frequencies. Those estimates are crucial for proving global-in-time results for nonlinear heat equations in a critical functional framework.

On the well-posedness of the full low-Mach number limit system in general critical Besov spaces

This work is devoted to the well-posedness issue for the low-Mach number limit system obtained from the full compressible Navier-Stokes system, in the whole space. In the case where the initial temperature (or density) is close to a positive constant, we establish the local existence and uniqueness of a solution in critical homogeneous Besov spaces. If, in addition, the initial velocity is small then we show that the solution exists for all positive time. In the fully nonhomogeneous case, we establish the local well-posedness in nonhomogeneous Besov spaces (still with critical regularity) for arbitrarily large data with positive initial temperature. Our analysis strongly relies on the use of a modified divergence-free velocity which allows to reduce the system to a nonlinear coupling between a parabolic equation and some evolutionary Stokes system. The Lebesgue exponents of the Besov spaces for the temperature and the (modified) velocity, need not be the same. This enables us to consider initial data in Besov spaces with a negative index of regularity.

A Lagrangian approach for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable density

Here we investigate the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations in the whole $n$-dimensional space. Under some smallness assumption on the data, we show the existence of global-in-time unique solutions in a critical functional framework. The initial density is required to belong to the multiplier space of $\dot B^{n/p-1}_{p,1}(\R^n)$. In particular, piecewise constant initial densities are admissible data \emph{provided the jump at the interface is small enough}, and generate global unique solutions with piecewise constant densities. Using Lagrangian coordinates is the key to our results as it enables us to solve the system by means of the basic contraction mapping theorem. As a consequence, conditions for uniqueness are the same as for existence.

On the well-posedness of the incompressible density-dependent Euler equations in the $L^p$ framework

The present paper is devoted to the study of the well-posedness issue for the density-dependent Euler equations in the whole space. We establish local-in-time results for the Cauchy problem pertaining to data in the Besov spaces embedded in the set of Lipschitz functions, including the borderline case $B^{\frac Np+1}_{p,1}(\R^N).$ A continuation criterion in the spirit of the celebrated one by Beale-Kato-Majda for the classical Euler equations, is also proved. In contrast with the previous work dedicated to this system in the whole space, our approach is not restricted to the $L^2$ framework or to small perturbations of a constant density state: we just need the density to be bounded away from zero. The key to that improvement is a new a priori estimate in Besov spaces for an elliptic equation with nonconstant coefficients.

Global Existence Results for the Anisotropic Boussinesq System in Dimension Two

We study the global existence issue for the two-dimensional Boussinesq system with horizontal viscosity in only one equation. We first examine the case where the Navier-Stokes equation with no vertical viscosity is coupled with a transport equation. Second, we consider a coupling between the classical two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation and a transportdiffusion equation with diffusion in the horizontal direction only. For the both systems and for arbitrarily large data, we construct global weak solutions `a la Leray. Next, we state global wellposedness results for more regular data. Our results strongly rely on the fact that the diffusion occurs in a direction perpendicular to the buoyancy force.
