Minimal time of magnetization switching in small ferromagnetic ellipsoidal samples

In this paper, we consider a ferromagnetic material of ellipsoidal shape. The associated magnetic moment then has two asymptotically stable opposite equilibria, of the form $\pm\overline{m}$. In order to use these materials for memory storage purposes, it is necessary to know how to control the magnetic moment. We use as a control variable a spatially uniform external magnetic field and consider the question of flipping the magnetic moment, i.e., changing it from the $+\overline{m}$ configuration to the $-\overline{m}$ one, in minimal time. Of course, it is necessary to impose restrictions on the external magnetic field used. We therefore include a constraint on the $L^\infty$ norm of the controls, assumed to be less than a threshold value $U$. We show that, generically with respect to the dimensions of the ellipsoid, there is a minimal value of $U$ for this problem to have a solution. We then characterize it precisely. Finally, we investigate some particular configurations associated to geometries enjoying symmetries properties and show that in this case the magnetic moment can be controlled in minimal time without imposing a threshold condition on $U$.

Spatial decay of multi-solitons of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries and nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations

We study pointwise spatial decay of multi-solitons of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. We obtain that, uniformly in time, these solutions and their derivatives decay exponentially in space on the left of and in the solitons region, and prove rapid decay on the right of the solitons. We also prove the corresponding result for multi-solitons of the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations, that is, exponential decay in the solitons region and rapid decay outside.

Asymptotics of solutions with a compactness property for the nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation

We consider the nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \[ \partial_{tt}u+2α\partial_{t}u-Δu+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \quad \text{on} \ \ [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}^N \] with $α>0$, $2 \le N\le 5$ and energy subcritical exponents $p>2$. We study the behavior of solutions for which it is supposed that only one nonlinear object appears asymptotically for large times, at least for a sequence of times. We first prove that the nonlinear object is necessarily a bound state. Next, we show that when the nonlinear object is a non-degenerate state or a degenerate excited state satisfying a simplicity condition, the convergence holds for all positive times, with an exponential or algebraic rate respectively. Last, we provide an example where the solution converges exactly at the rate $t^{-1}$ to the excited state.

Long-time asymptotics of the one-dimensional damped nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

For the one-dimensional nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \[ \partial_{t}^{2}u+2α\partial_{t}u-\partial_{x}^{2}u+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \quad \mbox{on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}$,}\] with $α>0$ and $p>2$, we prove that any global finite energy solution either converges to $0$ or behaves asymptotically as $t\to \infty$ as the sum of $K\geq 1$ decoupled solitary waves. In the multi-soliton case $K\geq 2$, the solitary waves have alternate signs and their distances are of order $\log t$.

Asymptotic Stability of high-dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov solitons

We prove that solitons (or solitary waves) of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, a physically relevant high dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation appearing in Plasma Physics, and having mixed KdV and nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) dynamics, are strongly asymptotically stable in the energy space in the physical region. We also prove that the sum of well-arranged solitons is stable in the same space. Orbital stability of ZK solitons is well-known since the work of de Bouard. Our proofs follow the ideas by Martel and Martel and Merle, applied for generalized KdV equations in one dimension. In particular, we extend to the high dimensional case several monotonicity properties for suitable half-portions of mass and energy; we also prove a new Liouville type property that characterizes ZK solitons, and a key Virial identity for the linear and nonlinear part of the ZK dynamics, obtained independently of the mixed KdV-NLS dynamics. This last Virial identity relies on a simple sign condition, which is numerically tested for the two and three dimensional cases, with no additional spectral assumptions required. Possible extensions to higher dimensions and different nonlinearities could be obtained after a suitable local well-posedness theory in the energy space, and the verification of a corresponding sign condition.

Limiting motion for the parabolic Ginzburg-Landau equation with infinite energy data

We study a class of solutions to the parabolic Ginzburg-Landau equation in dimension 2 or higher, with ill-prepared infinite energy initial data. We show that, asymptotically, vorticity evolves according to motion by mean curvature in Brakke's weak formulation. Then, we prove that in the plane, point vortices do not move in the original time scale. These results extend the work of Bethuel, Orlandi and Smets [8, 9] for infinite energy data, they allow to consider the point vortices on a lattice (in dimension 2), or filament vortices of infinite length (in dimension 3).

Multi-solitons for nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations

In this paper we consider the existence of multi-soliton structures for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NLKG) in R^{1+d}. We prove that, independently of the unstable character of (NLKG) solitons, it is possible to construct a N-soliton family of solutions to (NLKG), of dimension 2N, globally well-defined in the energy space H^1 \times L^2 for all large positive times. The method of proof involves the generalization of previous works on supercritical NLS and gKdV equations by Martel, Merle and the first author to the wave case, where we replace the unstable mode associated to the linear NLKG operator by two generalized directions that are controlled without appealing to modulation theory. As a byproduct, we generalize the linear theory described in Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss and Duyckaerts-Merle to the case of boosted solitons, and provide new solutions to be studied using the recent Nakanishi- Schlag theory.

Construction of a multi-soliton blow-up solution to the semilinear wave equation in one space dimension

We consider the semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension. Given a blow-up solution with a characteristic point, we refine the blow-up behavior first derived by Merle and Zaag. We also refine the geometry of the blow-up set near a characteristic point, and show that except may be for one exceptional situation, it is never symmetric with the respect to the characteristic point. Then, we show that all blow-up modalities predicted by those authors do occur. More precisely, given any integer $k\ge 2$ and $ζ_0 \in \m R$, we construct a blow-up solution with a characteristic point $a$, such that the asymptotic behavior of the solution near $(a,T(a))$ shows a decoupled sum of $k$ solitons with alternate signs, whose centers (in the hyperbolic geometry) have $ζ_0$ as a center of mass, for all times.
