Analysis of a quasilinear coupled magneto-quasistatic model: solvability and regularity of solutions

We consider a~quasilinear model arising from dynamical magnetization. This model is described by a~magneto-quasistatic (MQS) approximation of Maxwell's equations. Assuming that the medium consists of a~conducting and a~non-conducting part, the derivative with respect to time is not fully entering, whence the system can be described by an abstract differential-algebraic equation. Furthermore, via magnetic induction, the system is coupled with an equation which contains the induced electrical currents along the associated voltages, which form the input of the system. The aim of this paper is to study well-posedness of the coupled MQS system and regularity of its solutions. Thereby, we rely on the classical theory of gradient systems on Hilbert spaces combined with the concept of $\mathcal{E}$-subgradients using in particular the magnetic energy. The coupled MQS system precisely fits into this general framework.

Real interpolation of functions with applications to accretive operators on Banach spaces

We study real interpolation, but instead of interpolating between Banach spaces, we interpolate between general functions taking values in $[0,\infty].$ We show the equivalence of the mean method and the $K$-method and apply the general theory to interpolation between the norm on a Banach space and the set norm associated with an m-accretive operator on such a space.

Note on the Kato property of sectorial forms

We characterise the Kato property of a sectorial form $\mathfrak{a}$, defined on a Hilbert space $V$, with respect to a larger Hilbert space $H$ in terms of two bounded, selfadjoint operators $T$ and $Q$ determined by the imaginary part of $\mathfrak{a}$ and the embedding of $V$ into $H$, respectively. As a consequence, we show that if a bounded selfadjoint operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $V$ is in the Schatten class $S_p(V)$ ($p\geq 1$), then the associated form $\mathfrak{a}_T(\cdot, \cdot) := \langle (I+iT)\cdot ,\cdot\rangle_V$ has the Kato property with respect to every Hilbert space $H$ into which $V$ is densely and continuously embedded. This result is in a sense sharp. Another result says that if $T$ and $Q$ commute then the form $\mathfrak{a}$ with respect to $H$ possesses the Kato property.

On the numerical range of second order elliptic operators with mixed boundary conditions in $L^p$

We consider second order elliptic operators with real, nonsymmetric coefficient functions which are subject to mixed boundary conditions. The aim of this paper is to provide uniform resolvent estimates for the realizations of these operators on $L^p$ in a most direct way and under minimal regularity assumptions on the domain. This is analogous to the main result in [Chill et al. 2006]. Ultracontractivity of the associated semigroups is also considered. All results are for two different form domains realizing mixed boundary conditions. We further consider the case of Robin -- instead of classical Neumann -- boundary conditions and also allow for operators inducing dynamic boundary conditions. The results are complemented by an intrinsic characterization of elements of the form domains inducing mixed boundary conditions.

Fine scales of decay of operator semigroups

Motivated by potential applications to partial differential equations, we develop a theory of fine scales of decay rates for operator semigroups. The theory contains, unifies, and extends several notable results in the literature on decay of operator semigroups and yields a number of new ones. Its core is a new operator-theoretical method of deriving rates of decay combining ingredients from functional calculus, and complex, real and harmonic analysis. It also leads to several results of independent interest.

Real interpolation with weighted rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces

Motivated by recent applications of weighted norm inequalities to maximal regularity of first and second order Cauchy problems, we study real interpolation spaces on the basis of general Banach function spaces and, in particular, weighted rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces. We show equivalence of the trace method and the $K$-method, identify real interpolation spaces between a Banach space and the domain of a sectorial operator, and reprove an extension of Dore's theorem on the boundedness of $H^\infty$-functional calculus to this general setting.

The Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz-Simon inequality and stabilisation in nonsmooth infinite-dimensional gradient systems

We state and prove a stabilisation result for solutions of abstract gradient systems associated with nonsmooth energy functions on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. One feature is that in this general setting the assumption on the range of the solution can be considerably relaxed, which considerably simplifies the applicability of the stabilisation result even in the case of smooth energies.

Nonlinear semigroups generated by $j$-elliptic functionals

We generalise the theory of energy functionals used in the study of gradient systems to the case where the domain of definition of the functional cannot be embedded into the Hilbert space $H$ on which the associated operator acts, such as when $H$ is a trace space. We show that under weak conditions on the functional $φ$ and the map $j$ from the effective domain of $φ$ to $H$, which in opposition to the classical theory does not have to be injective or even continuous, the operator on $H$ naturally associated with the pair $(φ,j)$ nevertheless generates a nonlinear semigroup of contractions on $H$. We show that this operator, which we call the $j$-subgradient of $φ$, is the (classical) subgradient of another functional on $H$, and give an extensive characterisation of this functional in terms of $φ$ and $j$. In the case where $H$ is an $L^2$-space, we also characterise the positivity, $L^\infty$-contractivity and existence of order-preserving extrapolations to $L^q$ of the semigroup in terms of $φ$ and $j$. This theory is illustrated through numerous examples, including the $p$-Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, general Robin-type parabolic boundary value problems for the $p$-Laplacian on very rough domains, and certain coupled parabolic-elliptic systems.

The Laplace operator on the Sierpinski gasket with Robin boundary conditions

We study the Laplace operator on the Sierpinski gasket with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions. We show that for certain Robin boundary conditions the Laplace operator generates a positive, order preserving, $L^\infty$-contractive semigroup which is sandwiched (in the sense of domination) between the semigroups generated by the Dirichlet-Laplace operator and the Neumann-Laplace operator. We also characterise all local semigroups which are sandwiched between these two extremal semigroups by showing that their generators are Robin-Laplace operators.

Weighted inequalities for singular integral operators on the half-line

We prove weighted estimates for singular integral operators which operate on function spaces on a half-line. The class of admissible weights includes Muckenhoupt weights and weights satisfying Sawyer's one-sided conditions. The kernels of the operators satisfy relaxed Dini conditions. We apply the weighted estimates to extrapolation of maximal $L^p$ regularity of first order, second order and fractional order Cauchy problems into weighted rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces. In particular, we provide extensions, as well as a unification of recent results due to Auscher and Axelsson, and Chill and Fiorenza.
