A Tour of Visualization Techniques for Computer Vision Datasets

We survey a number of data visualization techniques for analyzing Computer Vision (CV) datasets. These techniques help us understand properties and latent patterns in such data, by applying dataset-level analysis. We present various examples of how such analysis helps predict the potential impact of the dataset properties on CV models and informs appropriate mitigation of their shortcomings. Finally, we explore avenues for further visualization techniques of different modalities of CV datasets as well as ones that are tailored to support specific CV tasks and analysis needs.

Compactness of Semicommutators of Toeplitz operators -- a Characterization

Let $T_{f}$ denote the Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space $H^{2}(\mathbb{T})$ and let $T_{n}(f)$ be the corresponding $n \times n$ Toeplitz matrix. In this paper, we characterize the compactness of the operators $T_{|f|^{2}}-T_{f}T_{\overline{f}}$ and $T_{|\tilde{f}|^{2}}-T_{\tilde{f}}T_{\overline{\tilde{f}}},$ where $\tilde{f}(z)=f(z^{-1}),$ in terms of the convergence of the sequence $\{T_{n}(|f|^{2})-T_{n}(f)T_{n}(\overline{f})\}$ in the sense of singular value clustering. Hence we obtain a method to check the compactness of semicommutators of Toeplitz operators using the matrices obtained from the Fourier coefficients of the symbol function (Toeplitz matrices). The function space $VMO \cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$ is the largest $C^{*}$-subalgebra of $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$ with the property that whenever $f,g \in VMO \cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$, $T_{fg}-T_{f}T_{g}$ is compact. In this article, we obtain a characterization of $VMO \cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$ in terms of the convergence of $\{T_{n}(fg)-T_{n}(f)T_{n}(g)\}$ in the sense of singular value clustering. To be precise, $VMO \cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$ is the largest $C^{*}$-subalgebra of $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$ with the property that whenever $f,g \in VMO \cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$, $\{T_{n}(fg)-T_{n}(f)T_{n}(g)\}$ converges in the sense of singular value clustering.

Banach Spaces of GLT Sequences and Function Spaces

The Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences of matrices have been originated from the study of certain partial differential equations. To be more precise, such matrix sequences arise when we numerically approximate some partial differential equations by discretization. The study of the asymptotic spectral behaviour of GLT sequence is very important in analysing the solution of corresponding partial differential equations. The approximating classes of sequences (a.c.s) and the spectral symbols are important notions in this connection. Recently, G. Barbarino obtained some additional results regarding the theoretical aspects of such notions. He obtained the completeness of the space of matrix sequences with respect to pseudo metric a.c.s. Also, he identified the space of GLT sequences with the space of measurable functions. In this article, we follow the same research line and obtain various results connecting the sub-algebras of matrix sequence spaces and sub-algebras of function spaces. In some cases, these are identifications as Banach spaces and some of them are Banach algebra identifications. In the process, we also prove that the convergence notions in the sense of eigenvalue/singular value clustering are equivalent to the convergence with respect to the metrics introduced here. These convergence notions are related to the study of preconditioners in the case of matrix/operator sequences. Finally, as an application of our main results, we establish a Korovkin-type result in the setting of GLT sequences.
