The degree of nonminimality is at most two

It is shown that if $p$ is a complete type of Lascar rank at least 2 over $A$, in the theory of differentially closed fields of characteristic zero, then there exists a pair of realisations, $a_1$ and $a_2$, such that $p$ has a nonalgebraic forking extension over $A,a_1,a_2$. Moreover, if $A$ is contained in the field of constants then $p$ already has a nonalgebraic forking extension over $A,a_1$. The results are also formulated in a more general setting.

Finiteness theorems on hypersurfaces in partial differential-algebraic geometry

Hrushovski's generalization and application of [Jouanolou, "Hypersurfaces solutions d'une équation de Pfaff analytique", Mathematische Annalen, 232 (3):239--245, 1978] is here refined and extended to the partial differential setting with possibly nonconstant coefficient fields. In particular, it is shown that if $X$ is a differential-algebraic variety over a partial differential field F that is finitely generated over its constant field F_0, then there exists a dominant differential-rational map from X to the constant points of an algebraic variety V over F_0, such that all but finitely many codimension one subvarieties of X over F arise as pull-backs of algebraic subvarieties of V over F_0. As an application, it is shown that the algebraic solutions to a first order algebraic differential equation over C(t) are of bounded height, answering a question of Eremenko. Two expected model-theoretic applications to DCF_{0,m} are also given: 1) Lascar rank and Morley rank agree in dimension two, and 2) dimension one strongly minimal sets orthogonal to the constants are \aleph_0-categorical. A detailed exposition of Hrushovski's original (unpublished) theorem is included, influenced by [Ghys, "À propos d'un théorème de J.-P. Jouanolou concernant les feuilles fermées des feuilletages holomorphes", Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (2)}, 49(1):175--180, 2000.

Poisson algebras via model theory and differential-algebraic geometry

Brown and Gordon asked whether the Poisson Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence holds for any complex affine Poisson algebra; that is, whether the sets of Poisson rational ideals, Poisson primitive ideals, and Poisson locally closed ideals coincide. In this article a complete answer is given to this question using techniques from differential-algebraic geometry and model theory. In particular, it is shown that while the sets of Poisson rational and Poisson primitive ideals do coincide, in every Krull dimension at least four there are complex affine Poisson algebras with Poisson rational ideals that are not Poisson locally closed. These counterexamples also give rise to counterexamples to the classical (noncommutative) Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence in finite $\operatorname{GK}$ dimension. A weaker version of the Poisson Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence is proven for all complex affine Poisson algebras, from which it follows that the full equivalence holds in Krull dimension three or less. Finally, it is shown that everything, except possibly that rationality implies primitivity, can be done over an arbitrary base field of characteristic zero.

The model companion of differential fields with free operators

A model companion is shown to exist for the theory of partial differential fields of characteristic zero equipped with free operators that commute with the derivations. The free operators here are those introduced in [R. Moosa and T. Scanlon, Model theory of fields with free operators in characteristic zero, Preprint 2013]. The proof relies on a new lifting lemma in differential algebra: a differential version of Hensel's Lemma for local finite algebras over differentially closed fields.

Differential-algebraic jet spaces preserve internality to the constants

This paper concerns the model theory of jet spaces (i.e., higher-order tangent spaces) in differentially closed fields. Suppose p is the generic type of the jet space to a finite dimensional differential-algebraic variety at a generic point. It is shown that p satisfies a certain strengthening of almost internality to the constant field called "preserving internality to the constants". This strengthening is a model-theoretic abstraction of the generic behaviour of jet spaces in complex-analytic geometry. A counterexample is constructed showing that only this generic analogue holds in differential-algebraic geometry.

Some model theory of fibrations and algebraic reductions

Let p=tp(a/A) be a stationary type in an arbitrary finite rank stable theory, and P an A-invariant family of partial types. The following property is introduced and characterised: whenever c is definable over (A,a) and a is not algebraic over (A,c) then \tp(c/A) is almost internal to P. The characterisation involves among other things an apparently new notion of ``descent" for stationary types. Motivation comes partly from results in Section~2 of [Campana, Oguiso, and Peternell. Non-algebraic hyperkähler manifolds. Journal of Differential Geometry, 85(3):397--424, 2010] where structural properties of generalised hyperkähler manifolds are given. The model-theoretic results obtained here are applied back to the complex analytic setting to prove that the algebraic reduction of a nonalgebraic (generalised) hyperkähler manifold does not descend. The results are also applied to the theory of differentially closed fields, where examples coming from differential algebraic groups are given.

Nonstandard methods for bounds in differential polynomial rings

Motivated by the problem of the existence of bounds on degrees and orders in checking primality of radical (partial) differential ideals, the nonstandard methods of van den Dries and Schmidt ["Bounds in the theory of polynomial rings over fields. A nonstandard approach.", Inventionnes Mathematicae, 76:77--91, 1984] are here extended to differential polynomial rings over differential fields. Among the standard consequences of this work are: a partial answer to the primality problem, the equivalence of this problem with several others related to the Ritt problem, and the existence of bounds for characteristic sets of minimal prime differential ideals and for the differential Nullstellensatz.

$\aleph_0$-categorical strongly minimal compact complex manifolds

Essential $\aleph_0$-categoricity; i.e., $\aleph_0$-categoricity in some full countable language, is shown to be a robust notion for strongly minimal compact complex manifolds. Characterisations of triviality and essential $\aleph_0$-categoricity are given in terms of complex-analytic automorphisms, in the simply connected case, and correspondences in general. As a consequence it is pointed out that an example of McMullen yields a strongly minimal compact Kähler manifold with trivial geometry but which is not $\aleph_0$-categorical, giving a counterexample to a conjecture of the second author and Tom Scanlon.

A model-theoretic counterpart to Moishezon morphisms

In this note a natural strengthening of internality motivated by complex geometry, being "Moishezon" to a set of types, is introduced. Under the hypothesis of Pillay's canonical base property, and using results of Chatzidakis, a criterion is given for when a finite U-rank stationary type that is internal to a nonmodular minimal type is in fact Moishezon to the set of all nonmodular minimal types. This result is a model-theoretic analogue of (a special case of) Campana's "first algebraicity criterion". Other related abstractions from complex geometry, including "coreductions" and "generating fibrations" are also discussed.

Generalised Hasse-Schmidt varieties and their jet spaces

This work provides a unified formalism for studying difference and (Hasse-) differential algebraic geometry, by introducing a theory of "iterative Hasse rings and schemes". As an application, Hasse jet spaces are constructed generally, allowing the development of the theory for arbitrary systems of algebraic partial difference/differential equations, where constructions by earlier authors applied only to the finite dimensional case. In particular, it is shown that under appropriate separability assumptions a Hasse variety is determined by its jet spaces at a point.
