A theoretical analysis of the semileptonic decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0l^+l^-$ and $η^\prime\toηl^+l^-$

A complete theoretical analysis of the $C$-conserving semileptonic decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0l^+l^-$ and $η^\prime\toηl^+l^-$ ($l=e$ or $μ$) is carried out within the framework of the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model. An existing phenomenological model is used to parametrise the VMD coupling constants and the associated numerical values are obtained from an optimisation fit to $V\to Pγ$ and $P\to Vγ$ radiative decays ($V=ρ^0$, $ω$, $ϕ$ and $P=π^0$, $η$, $η^{\prime}$). The decay widths and dilepton energy spectra for the two $η\toπ^0l^+l^-$ processes obtained using this approach are compared and found to be in good agreement with other results available in the published literature. Theoretical predictions for the four $η^{\prime}\toπ^0l^+l^-$ and $η^\prime\toηl^+l^-$ decay widths and dilepton energy spectra are calculated and presented for the first time in this work.

New-physics signatures via $C\!P$ violation in $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0μ^+μ^-$ and $η^\prime\toημ^+μ^-$ decays

In this work we investigate the prospect of observing new-physics signatures via $C\!P$ violation in $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0μ^+μ^-$ and $η^\prime\toημ^+μ^-$ decays at the REDTOP experiment. We make use of the SMEFT to parametrise the new-physics $C\!P$-violating effects and find that the projected REDTOP statistics are not competitive with respect to nEDM experiments. This reasserts the $η\toμ^+μ^-$ process as the most promising channel to find $C\!P$-violation at this experimental facility.

$π^0$-$η$-$η^{\prime}$ mixing from $V\!\rightarrow\!Pγ$ and $P\!\rightarrow\!Vγ$ decays

An enhanced phenomenological model that includes isospin-symmetry breaking is presented in this letter. The model is then used in a number of statistical fits to the most recent experimental data for the radiative transitions $V\!Pγ$ ($V=ρ$, $K^*$, $ω$, $ϕ$ and $P=π$, $K$, $η$, $η^{\prime}$) and estimations for the mixing angles amongst the three pseudoscalar states with vanishing third-component of isospin are obtained. The quality of the performed fits is good, e.g. $χ^2_{\textrm{min}}/\textrm{d.o.f} = 1.9$. The current experimental uncertainties allow for isospin symmetry violations with a confidence level of approximately $2.5σ$.

A theoretical analysis of the doubly radiative decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\toηγγ$

The scalar and vector meson exchange contributions to the doubly radiative decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\toηγγ$ are analysed within the Linear Sigma Model and Vector Meson Dominance frameworks, respectively. Predictions for the diphoton invariant mass spectra and the associated integrated branching ratios are given and compared with current available experimental data. Whilst a satisfactory description of the shape of the $η\toπ^{0}γγ$ and $η^\prime\toπ^{0}γγ$ decay spectra is obtained, thus supporting the validity of the approach, the corresponding branching ratios cannot be reproduced simultaneously. A first theoretical prediction for the recently measured $η^\prime\toηγγ$ by the BESIII collaboration is also presented.

Predictions on the second-class current decays $τ^{-}\toπ^{-}η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$

We analyze the second-class current decays $τ^{-}\toπ^{-}η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$ in the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory with resonances. Taking into account $π^{0}$-$η$-$η^{\prime}$ mixing, the $π^{-}η^{(\prime)}$ vector form factor is extracted, in a model-independent way, using existing data on the $π^{-}π^{0}$ one. For the participant scalar form factor, we have considered different parameterizations ordered according to their increasing fulfillment of analyticity and unitarity constraints. We start with a Breit-Wigner parameterization dominated by the $a_{0}(980)$ scalar resonance and after we include its excited state, the $a_{0}(1450)$. We follow by an elastic dispersion relation representation through the Omnès integral. Then, we illustrate a method to derive a closed-form expression for the $π^{-}η$, $π^{-}η^{\prime}$ (and $K^{-}K^{0}$) scalar form factors in a coupled-channels treatment. Finally, predictions for the branching ratios and spectra are discussed emphasizing the error analysis. An interesting result of this study is that both $τ^{-}\toπ^{-}η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$ decay channels are promising for the soon discovery of second-class currents at Belle-II. We also predict the relevant observables for the partner $η^{(\prime)}_{\ell 3}$ decays, which are extremely suppressed in the Standard Model.

The $η^\prime$ transition form factor from space- and time-like experimental data

The $η^\prime$ transition form factor is reanalyzed in view of the recent BESIII first observation of the Dalitz decay $η^\prime\toγe^+e^-$ in both space- and time-like regions at low and intermediate energies using the Padé approximants method. The present analysis provides a suitable parameterization for reproducing the measured form factor in the whole energy region and allows to extract the corresponding low-energy parameters together with a prediction of its values at the origin, related to $Γ_{η^\prime\toγγ}$, and the asymptotic limit. The $η$-$η^\prime$ mixing is reassessed within a mixing scheme compatible with the large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order, with particular attention to the OZI-rule--violating parameters. The $J/ψ$, $Z\toη^{(\prime)}γ$ decays are also considered and predictions reported.

$τ^-\to K^-η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$: a primer analysis

The decays $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$ and $K^-η^\primeν_τ$ are studied in the context of Chiral Perturbation Theory supplemented with the explicit inclusion of resonances. For the required vector-form factors we have explored three different possibilities according to the treatment of final-state interactions: Breit-Wigner parametrisation, exponential resummation and dispersive representation. In the first part of the analysis, we predict the invariant mass spectrum and the integrated branching ratio for both decays from a fit to data on $τ^-\to K_Sπ^-ν_τ$ decays. In the second part, we take advantage of existing data on $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$ from BABAR and Belle collaborations and perform a fit to extract the pole position of the $K^\ast(1410)$ resonance which is seen to be in agreement and competitive with the values obtained before. From the comparison to data we conclude that the Breit-Wigner parametrisation of form factors is too na\"ıve and consequently the use of more advanced treatments such as exponential resummation or dispersive representation is essential.

A rational approach to $η$ and $η^\prime$ transition form factors

The $η$ and $η^\prime$ transition form factors in the space-like region are analyzed at low and intermediate energies in a model-independent way through the use of rational approximants. The slope and curvature parameters of the form factors as well as their values at infinity are extracted from experimental data. The impact of these results on the mixing parameters of the $η$-$η^\prime$ system are also discussed.

A first prediction of the electromagnetic rare decays $η^\prime\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\toηγγ$

The branching ratio of the electromagnetic rare decays $η\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\to (π^0,η)γγ$ are analysed in terms of scalar and vector meson exchange contributions using the frameworks of the Linear Sigma Model and Vector Meson Dominance, respectively. The measured $η\toπ^0γγ$ process serves as a test of our approach while the non yet measured $η^\prime\to (π^0,η)γγ$ reactions are predicted for the first time. Our prediction for the $η\toπ^0γγ$ decay agrees with recent experimental reported values, thus supporting the validity of our framework. Therefore, our predictions for the $η^\prime\toπ^0γγ$ and $η^\prime\toηγγ$ decays should be taken as a first indication of the possible values of the associated branching ratios. We hope these predictions to be interesting and useful for experiments such as KLOE-2, Crystal Ball, WASA, and BES-III where these processes are expected to be measured in the next future.

Chiral dynamics predictions for eta' -> eta pi pi

The hadronic decays eta' -> eta pi pi are studied in the frameworks of large-Nc Chiral Perturbation Theory, at lowest and next-to-leading orders, and Resonance Chiral Theory in the leading 1/Nc approximation. Higher order effects such as pi-pi final state interactions are taken into account through a detailed unitarization procedure. The inclusion of finite-width effects in the case of RChT is also discussed. The Dalitz plot distribution and the differential branching ratio are computed in both approaches. The predicted Dalitz plot parameters obtained from the different treatments are compared with the most recent measured values. We find that the eta' -> eta pi pi branching ratios are easily understood, while the Dalitz plot parameters require the inclusion of pi-pi loops in order to achieve a reasonable agreement. Our final predictions agree with the experimental measurements. We hope our results to be of relevance for present and future experimental analyses of these decays.

The Kpi vector form factor and constraints from Kl3 decays

The slope and curvature parameters of the $Kπ$ vector form factor, $F_+^{Kπ}$, are fitted to the data on $\tauKpi$ and $K_{l3}$ decays yielding $λ_+'=(25.49 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+"= (12.22 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-4}$. The pole position of the $K^*(892)^\pm$ is found to be at $m_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 892.0\pm 0.5$ MeV and $Γ_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 46.5 \pm1.1$ MeV. The phase-space integrals relevant for $K_{l3}$ analyses and the $P$-wave isospin-1/2 $Kπ$ phase-shift threshold parameters are also calculated.

Constraining the Kpi vector form factor by tau---> K pi nu_tau and K_l3 decay data

A subtracted dispersive representation of the $Kπ$ vector form factor, $F_+^{Kπ}$, is used to fit the Belle spectrum of $\tauKpi$ decays incorporating constraints from results on $K_{l3}$ decays. Through the use of three subtractions, the slope and curvature of $F_+^{Kπ}$ are obtained directly from the data yielding $λ_+'=(25.49 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+"= (12.22 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-4}$. The phase-space integrals relevant for $K_{l3}$ analyses are calculated. Additionally, from the pole position on the second Riemann sheet the mass and width of the $K^*(892)^\pm$ are found to be $m_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 892.0\pm 0.5$ MeV and $Γ_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 46.5 \pm 1.1$ MeV. Finally, we study the $P$-wave isospin-1/2 $Kπ$ phase-shift and its threshold parameters.

Improving the Kpi vector form factor through Kl3 constraints

The $Kπ$ vector form factor, $F_+^{Kπ}$, used to reproduce the Belle spectrum of $\tauKpi$ decays is described by means of a three-times subtracted dispersion relation also incorporating constraints from $K_{l3}$ decays. The slope and curvature of $F_+^{Kπ}$ are fitted to the data yielding $λ_+'=(25.49 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+"= (12.22 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-4}$. The pole parameters of the $K^*(892)^\pm$ are found to be $m_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 892.0\pm 0.5$ MeV and $Γ_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 46.5 \pm1.1$ MeV. The phase-space integrals relevant for $K_{l3}$ analyses and the $P$-wave isospin-1/2 $Kπ$ phase-shift threshold parameters are also calculated.

High Precision Tests of QED and Physics beyond the Standard Model

We study the four most significant high precision observables of QED ---the anomalous electron and muon magnetic moments, the hydrogen Lamb shift and muonium hyperfine splitting--- in the context of SU(2) x U(1) gauge-invariant effective Lagrangians. The agreement between the theoretical predictions for these observables and the experimental data places bounds on the lowest dimension operators of the effective Lagrangians. We also place bounds on such effective operators using other experimental data. Comparison of the tow types of bounds allows us to discuss the potential of each one of the four high precision observables in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We find that the anomalous electron and muon magnetic moments are sensitive to new physics while the hydrogen Lamb shift and muonium hyperfine splitting are not.
