On the Differential Representation and Color-Kinematics Duality of AdS Boundary Correlators

The AdS boundary correlators and their dual correlation functions of boundary operators have been the main dynamic observables of the holographic duality relating a bulk AdS theory and a boundary conformal field theory. We show that tree-level AdS boundary correlators for generic states can be expressed as nonlocal differential operators of a certain structure acting on contact Witten diagrams. We further write the boundary correlators in a form that is very similar to flat space amplitudes, with Mandelstam variables replaced by certain combinations of single-state conformal generators, prove that all tree-level AdS boundary correlators have a differential representation, and detail the conversion of such differential expressions to position space. We illustrate the construction through the computation of the boundary correlators of scalars coupled to gluons and gravitons; when converted to position space, they reproduce known results. Color-kinematics duality and BCJ relations can be defined in analogy with their flat space counterparts, and are respected by the scalar correlators with a gluon exchange. We also discuss potential approaches to the double copy and find that its direct generalization may require nontrivial extensions.

Snowmass White Paper: Gravitational Waves and Scattering Amplitudes

We review recent progress and future prospects for harnessing powerful tools from theoretical high-energy physics, such as scattering amplitudes and effective field theory, to develop a precise and systematically improvable framework for calculating gravitational-wave signals from binary systems composed of black holes and/or neutron stars. This effort aims to provide state-of-the-art predictions that will enable high-precision measurements at future gravitational-wave detectors. In turn, applying the tools of quantum field theory in this new arena will uncover theoretical structures that can transform our understanding of basic phenomena and lead to new tools that will further the cycle of innovation. While still in a nascent stage, this research direction has already derived new analytic results in general relativity, and promises to advance the development of highly accurate waveform models for ever more sensitive detectors.

Snowmass White Paper: the Double Copy and its Applications

The double copy is, in essence, a map between scattering amplitudes in a broad variety of familiar field and string theories. In addition to the mathematically rich intrinsic structure, it underlies a multitude of active research directions and has a range of interesting applications in quantum, classical and effective field theories, including broad topics such as string theory, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. This Snowmass white paper provides a brief introduction to the double copy, its applications, current research and future challenges.

Scattering Amplitudes, the Tail Effect, and Conservative Binary Dynamics at $O(G^4)$

We complete the calculation of conservative two-body scattering dynamics at fourth post-Minkowskian order, i.e. $O(G^4)$ and all orders in velocity, including radiative contributions corresponding to the tail effect in general relativity. As in previous calculations, we harness powerful tools from the modern scattering amplitudes program including generalized unitarity, the double copy, and advanced multiloop integration methods, in combination with effective field theory. The classical amplitude involves complete elliptic integrals, and polylogarithms with up to transcendental weight two. Using the amplitude-action relation, we obtain the radial action directly from the amplitude, and match the known overlapping terms in the post-Newtonian expansion.

Black Hole Binary Dynamics from the Double Copy and Effective Theory

We describe a systematic framework for computing the conservative potential of a compact binary system using modern tools from scattering amplitudes and effective field theory. Our approach combines methods for integration and matching adapted from effective field theory, generalized unitarity, and the double-copy construction, which relates gravity integrands to simpler gauge-theory expressions. With these methods we derive the third post-Minkowskian correction to the conservative two-body Hamiltonian for spinless black holes. We describe in some detail various checks of our integration methods and the resulting Hamiltonian.

Leading Nonlinear Tidal Effects and Scattering Amplitudes

We present the two-body Hamiltonian and associated eikonal phase, to leading post-Minkowskian order, for infinitely many tidal deformations described by operators with arbitrary powers of the curvature tensor. Scattering amplitudes in momentum and position space provide systematic complementary approaches. For the tidal operators quadratic in curvature, which describe the linear response to an external gravitational field, we work out the leading post-Minkowskian contributions using a basis of operators with arbitrary numbers of derivatives which are in one-to-one correspondence with the worldline multipole operators. Explicit examples are used to show that the same techniques apply to both bodies interacting tidally with a spinning particle, for which we find the leading contributions from quadratic in curvature tidal operators with an arbitrary number of derivatives, and to effective field theory extensions of general relativity. We also note that the leading post-Minkowskian order contributions from higher-dimension operators manifest double-copy relations. Finally, we comment on the structure of higher-order corrections.

On the asymptotic states and the quantum S matrix of the $η$-deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring

We investigate the worldsheet S matrix of string theory in $η$-deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$. By computing the six-point tree-level S matrix we explicitly show that there is no particle production at this level, as required by the classical integrability of the theory. At one and two loops we show that integrability requires that the classical two-particle states be redefined in a non-local and $η$-dependent way. This is a significant departure from the undeformed theory which is probably related to the quantum group symmetry of the worldsheet theory. We use generalized unitarity to carry out the loop calculations and identify a set of integrals that allow us to give a two-loop Feynman integral representation of the logarithmic terms of the two-loop S matrix. We finally also discuss aspects of the calculation of the two-loop rational terms.

Scattering amplitudes in N=2 Maxwell-Einstein and Yang-Mills/Einstein supergravity

We expose a double-copy structure in the scattering amplitudes of the generic Jordan family of N=2 Maxwell-Einstein and Yang-Mills/Einstein supergravity theories in four and five dimensions. The Maxwell-Einstein supergravity amplitudes are obtained through the color/kinematics duality as a product of two gauge-theory factors; one originating from pure N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory and the other from the dimensional reduction of a bosonic higher-dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory. We identify a specific symplectic frame in four dimensions for which the on-shell fields and amplitudes from the double-copy construction can be identified with the ones obtained from the supergravity Lagrangian and Feynman-rule computations. The Yang-Mills/Einstein supergravity theories are obtained by gauging a compact subgroup of the isometry group of their Maxwell-Einstein counterparts. For the generic Jordan family this process is identified with the introduction of cubic scalar couplings on the bosonic gauge-theory side, which through the double copy are responsible for the non-abelian vector interactions in the supergravity theory. As a demonstration of the power of this structure, we present explicit computations at tree-level and one loop. The double-copy construction allows us to obtain compact expressions for the supergravity superamplitudes which are naturally organized as polynomials in the gauge coupling constant.

A twistor string for the ABJ(M) theory

We construct an open string theory whose single-trace part of the tree-level S-matrix reproduces the S-matrix of the ABJ(M) theory with a unitary gauge group. We also demonstrate that the multi-trace part of the string theory tree-level S-matrix {which has no counterpart in the pure N = 6 super-Chern-Simons theory {is due to conformal supergravity interactions and identify certain Lagrangian interaction terms. Our construction suggests that there exists a higher dimensional theory which can be dimensionally-reduced, in a certain sense, to the ABJ(M) theory. It also suggests a generalization of this theory to product gauge groups with more than two factors.

Color/kinematics duality for general abelian orbifolds of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory

To explore color/kinematics duality for general representations of the gauge group we formulate the duality for general abelian orbifolds of the SU(N), N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, which have fields in the bi-fundamental representation, and use it to construct explicitly complete four-vector and four-scalar amplitudes at one loop. For fixed number of supercharges, graph-organized L-loop n-point integrands of all orbifold theories are given in terms of a fixed set of polynomials labeled by L representations of the orbifold group. In contrast to the standard duality-satisfying presentation of amplitudes of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, each graph may appear several times with different internal states. The color and R-charge flow provide a way to deform the amplitudes of orbifold theories to those of more general quiver gauge theories which do not necessarily exhibit color/kinematics duality on their own. Based on the organization of amplitudes required by the duality between color and kinematics in orbifold theories we show how the amplitudes of certain non-factorized matter-coupled supergravity theories can be found through a double-copy construction. We also carry out a comprehensive search for theories with fields solely in the adjoint representation of the gauge group and amplitudes exhibiting color/kinematics duality for all external states and find an interesting relation between supersymmetry and existence of the duality.

Generalized unitarity and the worldsheet S matrix in AdS_n x S^n x M^(10-2n)

The integrability-based solution of string theories related to AdS(n)/CFT(n-1) dualities relies on the worldsheet S matrix. Using generalized unitarity we construct the terms with logarithmic dependence on external momenta at one- and two-loop order in the worldsheet S matrix for strings in a general integrable worldsheet theory. We also discuss aspects of calculations at higher orders. The S-matrix elements are expressed as sums of integrals with coefficients given in terms of tree-level worldsheet four-point scattering amplitudes. One-loop rational functions, not determined by two-dimensional unitarity cuts, are fixed by symmetry considerations. They play an important role in the determination of the two-loop logarithmic contributions. We illustrate the general analysis by computing the logarithmic terms in the one- and two-loop four-particle S-matrix elements in the massive worldsheet sectors of string theory in AdS_5 x S^5, AdS_4 x CP^3, AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 and AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. We explore the structure of the S matrices and provide explicit evidence for the absence of higher-order logarithms and for the exponentiation of the one-loop dressing phase.

Weyl fermions induced Magnon electrodynamics in Weyl semimetal

Weyl fermions, which are fermions with definite chiralities, can give rise to anomalous breaking of the symmetry of the physical system which they are a part of. In their (3+1)-dimensional realizations in condensed matter systems, i.e., the so-called Weyl semimetals, this anomaly gives rise to topological electromagnetic response of magnetic fluctuations, which takes the form of non-local interaction between magnetic fluctuations and electromagnetic fields. We study the physical consequences of this non-local interaction, including electric field assisted magnetization dynamics, an extra gapless magnon dispersion, and polariton behaviors that feature "sibling" bands in small magnetic fields.

Covariant procedures for perturbative non-linear deformation of duality-invariant theories

We analyze a recent conjecture regarding the perturbative construction of non-linear deformations of all classically duality invariant theories, including N=8 supergravity. Starting with an initial quartic deformation, we engineer a procedure that generates a particular non-linear deformation (Born-Infeld) of the Maxwell theory. This procedure requires the introduction of an infinite number of modifications to a constraint which eliminates degrees of freedom consistent with the duality and field content of the system. We discuss the extension of this procedure to N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric theories, and comment on its potential to either construct new supergravity theories with non-linear Born-Infeld type duality, or to constrain the finiteness of N=8 supergravity.

N=2 Supersymmetry and U(1)-Duality

Understanding the consequences of the E_{7(7)} duality on the UV properties of N=8 supergravity requires unravelling when and how duality-covariant actions can be constructed so as to accommodate duality-invariant counter-terms. For non-supersymmetric abelian gauge theories exhibiting U(1)-duality, with and without derivative couplings, it was shown that such a covariant construction is always possible. In this paper we describe a similar procedure for the construction of covariant non-linear deformations of U(1)-duality invariant theories in the presence of rigid N=2 supersymmetry. This is a concrete step towards studying the interplay of duality and extended supersymmetry.

Superconformal symmetry and maximal supergravity in various dimensions

In this paper we explore the relation between conformal superalgebras with 64 supercharges and maximal supergravity theories in three, four and six dimensions using twistorial oscillator techniques. The massless fields of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions were shown to fit into a CPT-self-conjugate doubleton supermultiplet of the conformal superalgebra SU(2,2|8) a long time ago. We show that the fields of maximal supergravity in three dimensions can similarly be fitted into the super singleton multiplet of the conformal superalgebra OSp(16|4,R), which is related to the doubleton supermultiplet of SU(2,2|8) by dimensional reduction. Moreover, we construct the ultra-short supermultiplet of the six-dimensional conformal superalgebra OSp(8*|8) and show that its component fields can be organized in an on-shell superfield. The ultra-short OSp(8*|8) multiplet reduces to the doubleton supermultiplet of SU(2,2|8) upon dimensional reduction. We discuss the possibility of a chiral maximal (4,0) six-dimensional supergravity theory with USp(8) R-symmetry that reduces to maximal supergravity in four dimensions and is different from six-dimensional (2,2) maximal supergravity, whose fields cannot be fitted into a unitary supermultiplet of a simple conformal superalgebra. Such an interacting theory would be the gravitational analog of the (2,0) theory.

Amplitudes and Ultraviolet Behavior of N=8 Supergravity

In this contribution we describe computational tools that permit the evaluation of multi-loop scattering amplitudes in N=8 supergravity, in terms of amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. We also discuss the remarkable ultraviolet behavior of N=8 supergravity, which follows from these amplitudes, and is as good as that of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory through at least four loops.

On correlation functions of Wilson loops, local and non-local operators

We discuss and extend recent conjectures relating partial null limits of correlation functions of local gauge invariant operators and the expectation value of null polygonal Wilson loops and local gauge invariant operators. We point out that a particular partial null limit provides a strategy for the calculation of the anomalous dimension of short twist-two operators at weak and strong coupling.

Worldsheet Scattering in AdS_5 x S^5

We calculate the S-matrix in the gauge-fixed sigma-model on AdS_5 x S^5 to the leading order in perturbation theory, and analyze how supersymmetry is realized on the scattering states. A mild nonlocality of the supercharges implies that their action on multi-particle states does not follow the Leibniz rule, which is replaced by a nontrivial coproduct. The plane wave symmetry algebra is thus naturally enhanced to a Hopf algebra. The scattering matrix elements obey the classical Yang-Baxter equation modified by the existence of the coproduct. This structure mirrors that of the large 't Hooft coupling expansion of the S-matrix for the spin chain in the dual super-Yang-Mills theory.

Magnon Bound-state Scattering in Gauge and String Theory

It has been shown that, in the infinite length limit, the magnons of the gauge theory spin chain can form bound states carrying one finite and one strictly infinite R-charge. These bound states have been argued to be associated to simple poles of the multi-particle scattering matrix and to world sheet solitons carrying the same charges. Classically, they can be mapped to the solitons of the complex sine-Gordon theory. Under relatively general assumptions we derive the condition that simple poles of the two-particle scattering matrix correspond to physical bound states and construct higher bound states ``one magnon at a time''. We construct the scattering matrix of the bound states of the BDS and the AFS S-matrices. The bound state S-matrix exhibits simple and double poles and thus its analytic structure is much richer than that of the elementary magnon S-matrix. We also discuss the bound states appearing in larger sectors and their S-matrices. The large 't Hooft coupling limit of the scattering phase of the bound states in the SU(2) sector is found to agree with the semiclassical scattering of world sheet solitons. Intriguingly, the contribution of the dressing phase has an independent world sheet interpretation as the soliton-antisoliton scattering phase shift. The small momentum limit provides independent tests of these identifications.

On the Tree-Level S-Matrix of Yang-Mills Theory

In this note we further investigate the procedure for computing tree-level amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory from connected instantons in the B-model on P^{3|4}, emphasizing that the problem of calculating Feynman diagrams is recast into the problem of finding solutions to a certain set of algebraic equations. We show that the B-model correctly reproduces all 6-particle amplitudes, including non-MHV amplitudes with three negative and three positive helicity gluons. As a further check, we also show that n-particle amplitudes obtained from the B-model obey a number of properties required of gauge theory, such as parity symmetry (which relates an integral over degree d curves to one over degree n-d-2 curves) and the soft and collinear gluon poles.

Yang-Mills Correlation Functions from Integrable Spin Chains

The relation between the dilatation operator of N=4 Yang-Mills theory and integrable spin chains makes it possible to compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of all operators in the theory. In this paper we show how to apply the technology of integrable spin chains to the calculation of Yang-Mills correlation functions by expressing them in terms of matrix elements of spin operators on the corresponding spin chain. We illustrate this method with several examples in the SU(2) sector described by the XXX_1/2 chain.

Inflation in warped geometries

We argue that brane anti-brane inflation in string theory de-Sitter vacua of Kachru-Kallosh-Linde-Trivedi (KKLT) is captured by the dynamics of a D3-brane probe in the local KKLT model constructed in hep-th/0203041. This provides a framework to study in a controllable way corrections to the inflationary slow roll parameter ηdue to conformal symmetry breaking in a warped geometry throat. We compute the leading correction to ηfor the inflation in the Klebanov-Tseytlin throat geometry. We find that in certain regime this correction tends to decrease η. Computations in a different regime suggest however that it is unlikely that η<< 1 can be achieved with the D3-brane throat inflation.

On the S-matrix of Type 0 String Theory

The recent discovery of non-perturbatively stable two-dimensional string backgrounds and their dual matrix models allows the study of complete scattering matrices in string theory. In this note we adapt work of Moore, Plesser, and Ramgoolam on the bosonic string to compute the exact S-matrices of 0A and 0B string theory in two dimensions. Unitarity of the 0B theory requires the inclusion of massless soliton sectors carrying RR scalar charge as asymptotic states. We propose a regularization of IR divergences and find transition probabilities that distinguish the otherwise energetically degenerate soliton sectors. Unstable D-branes can decay into distinct soliton sectors.

Exact superpotentials in N=1 theories with flavor and their matrix model formulation

In this note we investigate the effective superpotential of an N=1 SU(N_c) gauge theory with one adjoint chiral multiplet and N_f fundamental chiral multiplets. We propose a matrix model prescription in which only matrix model diagrams with less than two boundaries contribute to the gauge theory effective superpotential. This prescription reproduces exactly the known gauge theory physics for all N_f and $N_c$. For N_f < N_c this is given by the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg superpotential. For N_f > N_c we present arguments leading to the conclusion that the dynamics of these theories is also reproduced by the matrix model.

Brane-Bulk Duality and Non-conformal Gauge Theories

We discuss non-conformal gauge theories from type IIB D3-branes embedded in orbifolded space-times. Such theories can be obtained by allowing some non-vanishing logarithmic twisted tadpoles. In certain cases with N=0,1 supersymmetry correlation functions in the planar limit are the same as in the parent N=2 supersymmetric theories. In particular, the effective action in such theories perturbatively is not renormalized beyond one loop in the planar limit. In the N=2 as well as such N=0,1 theories quantum corrections in the D3-brane gauge theories are encoded in the corresponding classical higher dimensional field theories whose actions contain the twisted fields with non-vanishing tadpoles. We argue that this duality can be extended to the non-perturbative level in the N=2 theories. We give some evidence that this might also be the case for N=0,1 theories as well.

Superstrings on AdS_5 x S^5 supertwistor space

We derive the Green-Schwarz action on AdS_5 x S^5 using an alternate version of the coset superspace construction. By Wick rotations and Lie algebra identifications we bring the coset to GL(4|4)/(Sp(4) x GL(1))^2, which allows us to represent the conformal transformations on unconstrained matrices. The derivation is more streamlined even for the bosonic sector, and conformal symmetry is manifest at every step. Kappa-symmetry gauge fixing is more transparent.
